Perfectly average little bar — not a bad place to grab a drink in the Columbia area, but I don’t think it’s somewhere I would go out of my way to stop by. Giving it an extra star over what I would consider an «average» rating because there aren’t a lot of good, chill beer spots like this in the area, so it really meets a need. Their beer selection is pretty limited to what I think is their house brand, and it’s decent, but nothing special. Food seems like pretty typical bar stuff with a German flair. The giant pretzels are cool, but kind of feel like a novelty. I can’t imagine wanting to get them frequently. Seating is usually pretty available — most recently I walked in at around 8:30 on a Thursday and it was easy to get a drink and a seat without any trouble. Overall, if you’re looking for a chill spot to grab a drink near campus, this is a solid option, but not exceptional.

I went to Bernheim & Schwartz with a big group(10+) for lunch, so this review primarily addresses issues related to the fact that B&S had difficulty accommodating a large party. B&S may be ok for a smaller group, but I specifically went there because they had the space to accommodate a large party and assured me it would be fine. However, I was disappointed with my experience there. First, they brought out just my food 20 minutes before everyone else’s(all 10+ people!). My food was cold by the time everyone received their meals. When I brought this up to the staff, they were apologetic and polite, but did nothing to address the fact that my meal was basically inedible and I didn’t want to eat while no one had their food(they could have at least comped the relatively inexpensive dish or brought it back to the kitchen to freshen it up). Our food took an insanely long time to arrive even though we saw multiple other parties arrive after us, get their food, and leave before we had even received our food. They also can’t take more than 6 credit cards and have difficulty splitting bills. The food was ok. It’s a decent hangout near Columbia, though I wouldn’t exactly make a trip to Morningside for it. However, this experience was so frustrating I doubt I’ll be back any time soon.

The food is sub-mediocre, but the prices are reasonable for New York. It’s a standard burger and fries joint, I wouldn’t get too fancy and order anything else from here. The service was good and wasn’t fussy that we overcrowded a table. We were celebrating a birthday and they charged us a $ 20 cutting fee. That’s more expensive than the cake. For this insult: two stars.

Holy Giant Pretzels Batman! This place is seriously good. Their unlimited brunch is very generous and everything on their menu is CRAZYGOOD. Especially, my favorite, the giant pretzel with heavenly cheese sauce. Their boozy brunch is only offered with a limited brunch menu. But those few items are really good, so it’s worth the limitation. Prices are a teensy bit high, so if you’re on a budget this is definitely a special treat kind of place. But let me tell you, it is so worth it. The ambiance is pretty cool inside too. Check it out.

Wow, this is a great addition to the neighborhood. The space is huge but still manages to have a lot of character, with its wood paneling and different seating options(high tops in the front, beer hall benches in the back). They have their own beers(from Greenpoint). While I found the Golden Lager a little flat, their Witt is one of the best I’ve had in a while. Their menu is two notches above regular bar food. Their burger was solid, but if you’re up for something special, go for the hash browns/tater tots — seriously, never had anything like it — or the huge pretzel, which comes were great cheese sauce and mustard. Very impressed and happy with the experience!

Clueless owners with no sense of the history of the place they took over. Serves fried pickles. Avoid.

If you are looking for a place to eat with a good crowd, great ambiance, quick service and delicious food look no further. I started with the jalapeño poppers it was very flavorful, the breading had an interesting twist with the jalapeño and cheese inside with the sauce topped it off. I sat at a booth that was dimly lit and was seated at the perfect spot where I can watch the basketball game. The crowd consisted of business professionals, students and people from the neighborhood. The bacon wrapped shrimp with potato salad was scrumptious the glaze sauce was drizzled on the side of the plate and the plating was neat. Now for the bacon and chicken mac n cheese for starters the portion is huge and is the perfect combination of the 3 things I love. I would suggest this dish the chicken baked inside was tender, the bacon was crispy and it was cheesy. My dining experience was great so was the hospitality. It is very spacious, the pricing is reasonable and the portions are big. I will be back and will continue to give my recommendations.

Adequate food and pretty good service. It has a great ambience and beer selection but I think there’s better places in the area for some grub. Better appetizers than entrées I think. The hot pretzel was really good and so was the free jalapeño poppers when I checked in. Tip: They’re not much of a German restaurant. Not many German food items on the menu. I wanted more dirndls and bratwurst, but I only found normal clothes and spring rolls.

Tip: Check in on Unilocal and get free jalapeño poppers! What I tried: Pastrami Reuben Spring Rolls, Warm Giant Pretzel, Grilled Bratwurst & Sauerkraut. Story: My sister and I are trying to explore her new neighborhood so we gave this place a try! Pastrami spring rolls were OK but left something to be desired. They didn’t really have enough pastrami. The bratwurst was pretty good, but not the best I’ve had. The pretzel was awesome. With all that said, I’ll definitely be going back. The place is really big and the décor is great with a lot of old looking pieces.

Close to Columbia so the crowd will be mostly students(grad). They have TV’s playing most games so a good place to go with groups.

This was ok… the mac and cheese would have been better without the chicken. The food overall unimpressive to be honest but not the worst I’ve had. Burgers looked good but I didn’t get one.

Came here on a Tuesday night and they were severely understaffed. The one waiter they had couldn’t care less about serving food. The cook brought my order out himself long before I ever got a glass of water(which was never refilled), or even a question about what I would like to drink. They are generally understaffed and they try to half-heartedly make up for it by having the bus boys and kitchen staff double as food runners. If I could tip the kitchen staff directly, I would — they are friendly and the food comes out fast. On top of being a crap waiter, I had to argue with the waiter about the check after using a Bernheim coupon — he insisted he had taken it off when he clearly hadn’t(he did eventually go back and take the 10% off). I waited for my check about 3 times as long as it took me to eat. Even the food, however, is mediocre. I would simply stay away from the the chicken sandwich or the buffalo chicken salad — both are overpriced and utterly insipid. The only thing on the menu I’ve found worth ordering is the tuna burger, and the price is right for what you get. Frankly, I think this is a place solely to drink, not to eat, despite their pretensions to being a nice pub. What a tragedy.

Food is mediocre, as is TV placement and general vibe. The service is abysmal. Took forever to get my order, then a side order and drink were forgotten. Lame!

Known to neighborhood longtimers as «Oh, this used to be The West End» or «Hey, that Cuban place is gone?,» this gastropub is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. The new interior is beautiful; spacious with striking wall paper and old, dark tables. It feels appropriate to the building and creates a homey, old-timey atmosphere. The food is great, with a mix of traditional and more outlandish options. You can choose between a between a burger, a steak sandwich or perhaps some Reubin egg rolls. I’ve been here on several occasions and my mealbhas always been hardy and satisfying. One of these days, I will try the ginormous soft pretzel I’ve seen at other tables. The beer selection isn’t huge, but is well curated. And, for a neat option, they have half pint glasses, if you don’t want a full beer or you plan to try a few kinds of beer or you’re drinking at lunch but don’t want to head back to the office too wasted.

I came here for a large birthday group outing. There were about 25 of us total. The host over the phone said we would definitely have the back room, but when we arrived, they tried to place us in the main dining areas at separate tables. We finally were able to negotiate to the back room. We got a little attitude, which did not amuse me at all. The service was just OK(one of our servers also was serving attitude) and VERYSLOW. When the food came out it was just OK as well. I had a sampling of the pretzel, fish tacos(on hard shells —weird?), and burger. I wouldn’t come back for a large group party for awhile.

You have to try this place out! I can promose, you won’t be disappointed. Everything was great, I mean everything. I’ve found that a hard thing to come by, and they did a great job here. Beer selection is pretty good as the choices they have are chosen well. I got an Über IPA which was very tasty. We got appetizers to eat during football game. Everything was prepared and served fresh. Great, plump wings, amazing Reuben spring rolls, and we got an ahi tuna burger to finish it off. All were tasty with tons of flavor! Good prices were fair for the food served. Also, if planning to watch sports out in this area, this is your place. Great assortment of tvs, and seating to accommodate everyone that wants to watch. Hoping they add food/drink happy hour soon as there isn’t one yet and it would do great!

Last time I came to this location, about four years ago, it was still Havana Central. I was eating queso fundido and drinking mojitos with sugar cane sticks. Fast forward to the end of 2014, when I was eating fried pickles and drinking hard cider. Bernheim & Schwartz has made great use of the ample(and I do mean AMPLE) space that its predecessor left in its wake. The dining areas are huge, and its bar is sprawling. The menu contains many varied offerings, but your basic burgers, sandwiches, and main course plates with steak, fish, and poultry. As for my small group, we can vouch for the amazingness of the fried pickles, the Maui fish tacos, the rib eye sandwich, and the burger. The burger is one of the cheaper options on the menu, with a base price of just $ 7.50, and absolutely worth it! Not to say the rib eye sandwich I had wasn’t delicious, but it was a tad too loaded for me while the burger was a much more tolerable size. The meat was delicious and well-prepared, and it’s Pat LeFrieda beef.(Come on, now!) The beer selection was ample enough, though, per usual, I was just excited to see Angry Orchard on tap. The beau got one of the cocktails, which wasn’t terribly priced at $ 10 a pop. I’m quite pleased with this place, and I’m more interested to visit in the future to share appetizers with friends. Pastrami Reuben Spring Rolls? Chicken Tikka Masala Wontons? Provolone Sticks? That big ass warm pretzel? Y’all know how to win a girl’s heart!

I came here for lunch during a weekday, turns out this spot is pretty popular with the lunch crowd in the Columbia area most likely due to its ease of access. It has an old school kind of feel to it much akin to Peter Luger’s. The space in here is huge by Manhattan standards and there is plenty of space between you and the general public which is certainly appreciated. I ordered a burger based on what everyone was raving about on Unilocal and also had their pretzel. The burger was reasonably priced and I enjoyed the gigantic pretzel to go along with it. The burger was well cooked(a little more than the medium rare that I asked for) but not a bad deal for $ 10.50 if you get the fries. It was a little smaller than what I was expecting but combined with the pretzel, I wasn’t hankering for more. Overall, not a bad place to grab a bite although I thought the service was a bit awkward. Our waiter seemed to be a bit scatter brained, inattentive, and the kitchen was pretty slow at getting out our food for a fairly non-complicated order prior to the lunch rush. I could see this being a pretty good place to grab a beer after work but it doesn’t have the traditional beer hall vibe of large communal tables.

Been here only a few times since it’s opened, but only for drinks. So for now this review is for the bar aspect only. The first time we came here the credit card machines were down, so that was pretty much a nonexistent that I’ll skip. The second visit was with some family that was in town. We sat in the main bar area and had a great view of the football game that was going on. They are not short on seats, which is great, and the place itself is very spacious. We had a few drinks, then around 12:30am we wanted to try their Morningside Spritzer. I was then informed by the bartender that when the kitchen closes they put away ALL food items, even bar«food» items; e.g. strawberries and oranges, which are needed to make the Morningside Spritzer. That sounded a little odd to me, but fine. The most recent time we came here was with some friends. We went to the beer hall area and drank at the bar. It was around 1am, but I decided to try to order the Morningside Spritzer anyways, and they made it for me. Sounds like the bartender the first couple visits was just being lazy … ugh. All-in-all it is looking out to be a great bar in the neighborhood. I’m planning to go back to try their beer pong night and food. I’ll update this review then.
