Saturday, my husband and I decided to come and try the food here, since it had been highly recommended by my sister… well were we disappointed. My husband and I ordered the huevos rancheros, boy were we disappointed. The eggs were overcooked, the potatoes and beans were cold, and we did not even get an apology from the waitress, and to top it off she was rude. I could not understand why the food and service was so horrible, if the place was not even busy. Any who, I do not ever plan to go there again, it left a very bitter taste in my mouth.

As a guy who has eaten at many many Mexican food places across the city. North, South, East and West side I can say without hesitation this is a top 5 place for me. I rate the location a 7, the service a 9, the food a 9, the prices a 9, the selection an 8. Everything we have ordered was served hot and fresh. Great rice, beans and tortillas. The lowest rated thing I have tried are the enchiladas, I rate those around a 6 compared to the other top 5 places. The servers are friendly and courteous One suggestion for the summer months is an additional Air Conditioning unit for the seating area. Sometimes the dining room is way too warm for comfort. if you are looking for a very laid back and calm place to eat authentic Mexican food please place this one on your must try list.

Went to this area for Pancake Joe’s and waited over an hour so we walk over to this restaurant instead. What a horrible idea that was. Food was disgusting. My husband ordered three different type of breakfast tacos. He ate one and left the rest(he eats like a caveman so I was quite worried). The guacamole was not fresh, the chicharron was slimey. Ew. I rather have waited another hour for Pancake Joe’s.

I like coming to this place because the food is actually really good! It looks like a little rinky dink place, but don’t let it fool you! Cheap but good food!

Was headed to Pancake Joe’s and too long of a wait. Walked next door and found they serve breakfast too! Very good breakfast… little bit of slow service but sweet waitress!

Decent food. Horrible service. I guess it would be okay, if you were just getting tacos to-go. But if you want table service, you basically have to beg. I guess all their business will just have to come from all the high school student take-out orders. I won’t be back.

I wasn’t going to write a long review, but after seeing the only reviewer here so far was unusually unforgiving, I’d thought I’d offer another perspective. We moved here from Queens, NY, and I have worked/managed restaurants that have earned 1 Michelin star and no less than 2 stars from both Frank Bruni and Sam Sifton. I’m not bragging, nor am I a gourmand. That said, I know a thing or two about food. This place was recommended by friends, and our expectations were blown through the roof. The food is simple, perfectly seasoned, authentically executed, and humbly presented. The Puerco en Chile Colorado for one, is by far the best stewed meat taco Iv’e ever eaten outside of my own home. Their home made corn tortillas are light and not too doughy, offering a subtle platform for the dried chiles and tender pork to shine. I won’t bored you with an itemized report on everything we ate. Just know that we moved across the street from Jefferson High four days ago and have eaten there three times. I will say one thing regarding their complimentary house salsa and the level of heat. As a proprietor offering a house condiment, you have to be aware of the sensitivities of different people’s palates. That said the warm salsa was flavorful and hot enough not to over power my meal. The service is great. Wishing Chile Tomate & Cebolla continued success.

Chile, Tomate & Cebolla is located on Donaldson, near Jefferson High School. It is a small place and if you aren’t looking for it, you might miss it. The restaurant was quaint and had your typical Mexican décor. Any place that sports Emilio Zapata pics in their joint automatically gets 3 stars. Unfortunately, their food didn’t wow me enough to go beyond that. Here is the breakdown: Huevos Rancheros: Eggs cooked just right. Ranchero sauce had a very fresh flavor and the onion really came through in the end. It wasn’t too chunky of a sauce, which is a plus for my tastes. Carne Guisada: Sauce was darker than usual, which told me it was going to have more of a tomato flavor. It did. The meat was very tender and had a slight garlicky and cumin flavor. I recommend it. Papas: The papas were cooked perfectly and had a slight crunchiness yet stayed tender on the inside. They top it with their ranchero sauce, which made it a little soggy after a while, but it still was a nice side to a good meal. Refried beans: Okay. They were homemade, but lacked the bacon or pork dripping flavor that I usually rate my refried beans by. Definite room for improvement. Chicharrones: Tender, same ranchero sauce. Simple dish and I would recommend it. Migas with cheese: loaded with onions, so don’t expect your significant other to be happy if you try to kiss her after you eat this. Great flavor, though. Give it a try. Tortillas: too thick for my liking. Their salsa was not hot at all and because of that, I took a star off. I think salsa should be hot and any place that doesn’t put some bite in their hot sauce loses points with me. Overall, this is a 3 star joint. There are better places to eat at, but if you are in the area, then give it a go.
