Mugshot café is a local hotspot for locals and travelers alike. They have a beautiful wooden theme to their décor, including a pterodactyl hanging above their cashier, whose wingspan hovers above you as you order, or look at their yogurt options. My sister, a Penang local, took me here for the first coffee run of the day, and I couldn’t be happier! I ordered a iced coffee black with a side of cream, and my sister ordered a grape smoothie. We also shared an kiwi and honey yogurt. Can I say, that coming from Chicago and settling with packaged yogurt from a factory)… their yogurt here is AMAZING. It’s made in-house and has the perfect tartness that leaves a zip in your mouth. Their«kiwi & honey» combo was thr perfect fusion of rich, light, tart, and sweet. Their iced coffee came in a mason jar, and my sister and I sat at a little wooden table with wooden chairs near the entrance, which had a bamboo shade to block the scorching sun, but let island breeze pass through. I could stay here forever. Their baristas were kind and they sell bagels. Let me repeat, BAGELS in Penang. Like, whoa. I had my eye in the cream cheese and smoked salmon bagel, which almost everyone in the café had ordered. But I had to save room for an upcoming food tour in Georgetown. With wifi, coffee, smoothies, bagels with lox, and yogurt to die for, I could stay here forever. Or at least realistically, for a good chunk of a lazy Monday morning. They have a communal table in the center of the café, with a Christmas tree, and more seating, a foozball table, and an eyeglasses store if you keep walking towards the back of the store. Five stars, easily. I’m so glad I came to Mugshot café to kick off my Penang trip and now off I go, to take some mugshots with my sis at their photobooth in the back! Selamat tinggal.

With such a wide variety of local food in Penang, sometimes you just need a break from all the assam laksa or char kuey teow, appam, cendol. you name it. So it was by chance we were recommended to this lovely café in Georgetown, which I was told is actually very highly blogged about for their baked goods courtesy of the famed Rainforest Bakery next door. Walking in during a trip to visit some relatives one day, I fell in love with the rustic feel of the place, it’s set in a pre-war colonial shop house of sorts and the natural sunlight that beams through the ceiling just makes me want to chill and drink coffee in there all day long. We took a seat at one of the recycled wooden tables and was just awed at how great the place smelt. Ordering is done self service and while you shouldn’t expect a full meal, Mugshot is really famous for their fresh baked bagels with a variety of toppings from smoked salmon, bacon egg cup, corned beef and rocket. You can see how fresh the bagels are as a clay oven is built in the establishment itself so you can see those little round holes coming out from the oven golden brown and dense. For a healthy dose of good bacteria, go with the homemade yogurt served in a cute glass jar and layered with fresh fruit and nuts. I went for the jackfruit and gula melaka that day and it was delish! Naturally sweet and perfect with the tangy yogurt. Of course, there is always reason for coffee at a café like this and they do serve a mean latte, Overall, Penang has got its fair share of awesome cafes and Mugshot is definitely top of the list. And oh, don’t forget to take a mugshot of yourself with the props available for you in a little fun corner of the café.
