The Canopy

The Birchwood Canopy is a chic elegant large rooftop bar on the 5^th floor of the Birchwood Hotel in Downtown St Pete with beautiful views of the St Pete Marina, the Vinoy Resort, the downtown skyline, North Straub Park, and the bay. The Canopy Rooftop bar is located on the top floor of the Birchwood hotel off Beach Drive and across from North Straub Park. The canopy is a great spot to have an intimate night cap cocktail during the weekdays. On the weekend nights, the Canopy turns into a club and has gotten crazy busy, with long lines for drinks, lightning hockey players, and loud house and rap music but it still makes for a nice atmosphere. At night you really can’t see much of the view as the marina and park are not too lit up. There is a long line for the elevator which you can bypass if you take the stairs up. You can get a better view of the marina during the day and can catch a beautiful sunset here. There is limited street parking available on Beach drive and the surrounding area. The Canopy at the Birchwood looks chic and elegant with the VIP cabanas, comfy couches, and fire pits. VIP cabanas can be rented out for $ 100 per hour after 4pm pm the weekend, and $ 75 per hour from 11AM-​4PM. Drinks are a little bit pricey at $ 12-​$ 14 for specialty drinks, $ 8-​$ 10 for a glass of wine, and $ 6 for most brews but that’s to be expected and worth it with the nice view. On the upside, Canopy at the Birchwood holds a knife awesome Happy hour during the week Monday to Friday 3PM-​7PM with $ 3 Single well drinks, Domestic brews, and House Wines including Prosecco, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Cabernet Sauvignon so if you are anywhere near downtown St Pete during the week, this is the place to go! There’s a high-​rise directly behind the bar currently under construction and I look forward to coming back to see the progress of the construction and to try more of the wines! :)

This is a great roof top bar! It is on the smaller side and often time there isn’t enough lounge furniture to have a place to sit down. Also the building doesn’t face out west so you don’t enjoy direct sunset views over the water.
If you are looking for that check out 360 rooftop at Hotel Zamora in St. Pete beach. I love that place so much more! The food and drink is far superior!

We came here around 10pm and they were playing really sophisticated super nice lounge music. Very fitting for the location. And then out of nowhere they stopped and amazing house lounge song to play ghetto music. Lots of people left, then they played shots shots shots. I wanted to throw myself off the building. I don’t wanna be around a bunch of drunk college kids doing shots. It’s such a nice venue and has the potential for so much sophistication. Too bad the trashy music had to ruin the atmosphere completely. What a disappointment

I’ve been here a few times so I’m giving it 4 stars as an average review. My first time was a 5! Second time a 4. Most recent time I would say a 3. I went with my cousins. It wasn’t very crowded but the available seating was dirty. I ordered a lemon drop drink. The server that brought it out spill about a third of it on me and didn’t even acknowledge what he did. Then when I went to drink it, I realized there was salt on the rim instead of sugar. They re-​made my drink but then it was too strong. I drank a bit but we ultimately left not too long after that.

Excellent food, great service and ambience. We had the skirt steak and snapper. Location is great Definitely recommend it.

One of the coolest places in St Pete to grab a drink. The views of the bay are awesome. It does a good job at weeding out the rowdier crowds typically on central and the price point keeps many college kids away. Night time brings an awesome atmosphere which is usually packed with well dressed clientele. Not a board shorts and tank kind of place, button down and blazer.

My best friend and I decided to have a few cocktails and an appetizer. It was a quiet evening so I was wondering why it was taking so long for tater tots… I think the manager, Jason I think may have been his name, must have notice so he came over and asked how we were… I mentioned the length of time it had been, and he made a funny joke about tots… The nerd I am found it hilarious and forgot what I was even complaining about. We continued our evening and had a blast. Funny how a little notice and concern goes a long way. Can’t wait to do happy hour again!!!

I love rooftop anything and the Canopy was lovely. We went on a cooler evening in March and really enjoyed the early sunset views. The bar wasn’t too busy and there was plenty of seating. I am sure it fills up later in the night. There are firepits to enjoy and lots of couch lounge furniture. This is a fun romantic date night spot. I would definitely do it again.

Tampa Bay restaurateurs take note, duplicate this establishment all over the place! Some of the best views, water all over, beautiful sun rises and sunsets, Tampa Bay needs a «Canopy» on every corner!
I’ve lived a lot of places, I’ve been everywhere, and for this cool little town on the up and up, The Canopy is the place that sets the tone for St. Petersburg. What a cool ambiance, what great views, cool people working here, popped collars everywhere, sports jackets and high heels, this is a great place to spend a beautiful evening downtown.
Walking distance to everything worth going to, a feel of exclusivity with a hidden elevator, a rooftop that’s designed to impress, patio seating, private canopies, fire pits lining the center, glass mid-​rise walls overlooking the bay’s main street, a good drink menu and awesome food, and a stellar looking crowd of people. This is a great spot to end up at, it’s where I want to be at the end of the night anytime I’m downtown in St. Pete.
Most every night there’s live music, and it’s always great, plenty of seating, great lighting, a large wrap around bar, clean restrooms, scenery, landscaping, fire, sundresses and mini skirts, slacks and cufflinks, this place is really awesome!

Where have this place been all my life??? I love love this place, so peaceful and have an amazing view of the city. I just hate that its so far away from where I live but when ever I’m in DTSP I must pay the Canopy a visit.
The Canopy has the perfect setting for a date night and hanging with a group of friends and coworkers. You can begin or end your night out here.
The décor is beautiful with sofa seating in one section with heat laps for the cold season. You almost get a 360 degree view of the city where ever you are seated or standing which is beautiful at night.
Drinks are delicious and yummy but I have not tried the food yet. Both times I have come here must have been one of their busiest night cause was a little slower than average almost making me want to walk away from the bar and go enjoy my friends and scenery

Lovely spot on the second floor of the Birchwood on Beach Dr. This is a perfect spot to go with a group, or on a date to grab a drink, and just let loose.
There is still no cover. You simply go up the side elevator, & you are there. Go a little bit earlier before it gets dark. You will get a nice view!

If dive bars are your thing, Canopy is not for you. If you want to pay a lot of money for a fancy cocktail, enjoy a nice view of downtown, and hit on hot girls — you’ve found your spot!
I like that it seems fancy without seeming pretentious. And I like that the kitchen stays open late. Sometimes you just NEED some French fries to keep your drinking game going.

This place is great for cocktails and hanging out. I feel like the food and service was overrated, but maybe I caught them in a bad day. 5 Stars for the cocktails and 3 for the food and service, so I conclude the review with 4 stars. Would hang out in the balcony in a crisp night with friends.

As a local I was somewhat skeptical of this place. Sure, the allure of a rooftop bar is pretty strong but I did I really want to spend $ 12 on a drink? Honestly I love the swankiness of The Canopy. Gorgeous view of our glorious city. Impress your out-​of-​town guest. Seriously, just nice to sit on the comfortable couches and enjoy the weather when its not too hot. My drink was so strong I could barely drink it, but who complains about their $ 12 8oz tumbler that is 50% ice being too strong? Only the weak so I sucked that puppy down.
Their bar food menu looks decent and reasonable priced considering everything else. I only gave 4 stars because getting service was difficult both times I went.

My bf and I recently checked out this cool rooftop bar in St. Pete while we were in the area for the day. I thought it was absolutely adorable. It had beautiful views, giant plush sofas, and delicious cocktails.
We arrived about 5:30pm. There was plenty of seating so I grabbed a spot on one of the cushy sofas. There was a cocktail menu in front of us and just as we were deciding what we wanted a server approached us to see if we had any questions. My bf ordered a cherry martini and I ordered the Outcider. Our drinks were brought out promptly and they were both delicious. His had muddled cherries, cherry vodka, grenadine, and something else. Very sweet. It would be easy to drink quickly. Mine had tequila, apple cider, and was rimmed with cinnamon and sugar. It was awesome. I felt like I was drinking apple pie.
The service was very good here. We had several servers check on us while we were here and we enjoyed watching the sunset over the water.
The music was also fun. It was lots of modern Top 40 mixed with 1990’s Top 40.
I will definitely be back next time I’m in the area.

Thank you Unilocal for helping me find a rooftop bar in my new digs: The East Coast (only 7 weeks in fresh from LA). So you know it takes A LOT to impress me!
This place reminded a bit of The Standard, by taking a nearly hidden elevator to what seeming should have been a BatCave, but surprisingly opened up not to white gloved Alfred but rather a lively open aired bar set atop the banyan trees, hence the namesake.
It was a potpourri of ages and gender preferences sprinkled carefully amidst sofas, chairs and standing tables. Everyone seemed delightful and engaged in either fun conversation or dancing by making the aisle their dance floor.
Plenty of servers swung the rounds and impressively kept up with their section.
I opted to wet my throat with a DRAGONBERRY MOJITO, wasn’t very flavorful, more on the bland side, that would be my only complaint, but not enough to lower the 5 stars. I look forward to coming back again, and possibly making this my hangout-​despite living in Clearwater!

LOVED our night at the Canopy! We had a great time and I’m sure we will be back often. We weren’t sure if we could order food up here but the host was quick to answer any questions we had. We grabbed a spot on some comfy sofas in front of a fan and he promptly came by w/​menus for us. Our server was flawless in service and we were taken care of very well.
I had a Florida Mule which definitely hit the spot and was refreshing in the heat. My friends ordered burgers which they enjoyed very much. I just had an order of sweet potato fries– delish! It had a coconut glaze on them that was so yummy.
The view is amazing, but it was crowded on that side of the rooftop by the canopies. It was fun to people watch and the music wasn’t too bad. A nice mix of all ages here which was cool to see. There is only one really slow elevator up/​down. You could take the stairs but not sure how many want to brave that in high heels or a drunken state.
This is a must go-​to place if you are in downtown St Pete. Definitely a place to take any out of town guests.
