They’re lucky they’re not an all you can eat spot. I’d keep them cooking all night. Awesome food. Great meatloaf, greens, cabbage… I WILLBEBACK.

It doesn’t deserve they hype it receives. They make«alright» food. My mom is Asian and makes better soul-food.

Walking into this place, made me wonder when the last time they cleaned was. That was my first impression. The place seems slightly darker than you would want any restaurant to look during day time, and the cafeteria style didn’t help my expectations any. Since I LOVELOVELOVE soul food, I hushed my inner voice hoping this would be another«don’t judge a book by its cover» diamond in the rough. I decided to go with the two meat three side dish platter and neither meats were amazing. The fried chicken lacked any substantial flavor and was only mildly warm. The catfish was also the same and even had an odd texture to it. For my side dishes, I ordered the mac and cheese which was pretty good but far from the best I’ve had in town. I also tried the dirty rice which was not spicy in the least bit and was actually room temperature which was concerning from a health standpoint. But my favorite side dish was the yams because they were exactly what you would expect if you ate at your friends house for soul Sunday. Service was not friendly and my lunch ended up being $ 17 after adding a drink and dessert. The best thing I had probably was the dessert which was a buttermilk pie slice. The pie was surprisingly delicious since the rest of my meal ended up being mediocre. The crust had to be home made because the texture and flavors were exceptional. Despite the strong finish, I ended the meal wishing it had lived up to the Unilocal hype and I’m sorry to say but I probably will not be back again.

Definitely not what everyone is cracking it up to be. I am from the south where down home cooking is something I’m used to. Yes, there were collard greens, candied yams, Mac n cheese, fried chicken(which was what I ordered) but it did not taste like what I’m used to. The only thing I can truly say was good was the fried chicken. I waited alllllll week long to go here for the Mac n cheese because they only serve it on Fridays and it was YUCKY! It was bland with no flavor. Something like out of a can and dumped into a pot to warm up. Velveeta is better than what they make and I don’t like Velveeta Mac n cheese. Definitely not worth waiting all week for. The greens weren’t seasoned at all. The yams had toooo much nutmeg in them. The Kool-Aid I got to drink was so sweet, I had to add a bottle of water to even it out. My husband ordered the fried chicken, smothered steak with rice, greens and Mac n cheese. I tasted his steak and it was all fat. He said it was too salty and peppery. He just stuck with the chicken and forced himself to eat the greens and Mac n cheese. I was raised with my mom and aunts in the kitchen cooking great southern home cooking and I thank God all that cooking was instilled in me. What I ate today was no where near how good my home cooked meals taste. Oh, I did get a slice of german chocolate cake and that was decent. They get two stars from me… I would recommend people to travel to the south if they really want to experience some good down home southern cooking.

Hmm. It’s not Mikkis in Houston by a long shot. I went in a Monday around 4pm. They close at 6 so I guess it’s more a lunch spot. Wasnt a soul in there so that should have been my clue. I got the fried chicken dinner. Came with 2 sides. I got 2 small pieces yams greens n corn. No mac n cheese except fridays. Wasn’t too good. Chicken is on par with Church’s n the corn was average. Yams tasted like those ones my mom used to serve that come in that big brown n orange can. Ick. Now I know I didn’t go when everything was nice n fresh but I ll bet a $ 100 bucks that most of that had been sitting there since lunch time. And I’ve eaten soul food the next day n it was still finger licking good. Not the case here. The collard greens were good once I put some hot sauce on them. Had to force myself to eat half the meal. Vegetable portions are on point with other soul food places but not the meat portion. I got a small leg n thigh. Not looking fwd to eating the leftovers. Staff was interesting. Didn’t say a word to me when I approached the cafeteria style line. I had to say excuse me can I order from you? Ehh. I can cook better than this myself

This is home cooked food, specializing in home cooked meals. It tasted like«grandmas cooking». It looked like grandma’s older house that you were eating in, so keep that in mind when going to this place. I only eat halal/kosher meat, so not too many options as all, but the sides were great.(And the gravy is meat based so yall know). I tried the lemon cake as well, super dense and overall pretty good. But it was great and I am assuming it is more good if I could eat the meat. Would recommend people to try this. I would rate this 3⁄5 but since I couldn’t have the meat and the number of people inside on a random day at 2pm, was pretty convincing that it must be good. I appreciate the service and food.

The fried chicken is perfect. The corn is delicious. You’ll never get tired of their cornbread. I actually finish the collard greens which says a lot because I’m not a fan of greens. But the real money make is their peach cobbler. It’s the best in town hands down, without a doubt! It is a MUSTHAVE! GETITNOW!

Mr & Mrs G’s Home Cookin Review It’s a cafeteria style restaurant so you have to go up get a tray, get your silverware and away you go to getting some really savory food. Simple menu. BEVERAGES: OMG that Koolaid! Highly recommend the Koolaid. I had heard about it before hand and I was not disappoint in the slightest! Delicious though for some it may be a tad on the sweet side. Just right for me. Get a separate glass with Ice if you are gonna go up for refills. Canned sodas you probably will need two of them. They also have tea… same recommendation of getting a sep glass just with ice. MEATS: Chicken was delicious! David and I really liked it. I brought a piece home! So good! You won’t be disappointed. The Smothered Ribeye — Don’t get it unless you really love onion taste. Shrimp were okay and decent size. There are other meats didn’t try those so you’re on your own. SIDES: loved loved loved the Green Beans! Get them! Taters were also great smother them in the gravy!!! Also LOVED the Dirty Rice when they ask you if you want Gravy on it say«YESPLEASE!». David said the Okra was okay and didn’t compare to Golden Chick. Corn bread also loved that. DESERTS: Sadly we didn’t order deserts BUT I heard the Banana Pudding is awesome. AMBIANCE/ATMOSPHERE: Its definitely a plus. I felt like I was eating in a family kitchen. The Management came to check up on you also to gather feedback! Excellent quality. SPEEDOFSERVICE: People are starting to discover this place and so they try to figure out what they want. There is a menu there slightly hidden behind the deserts area. It’s not as complicated as Lubys and you have very simple choices. Everyone really friendly and helpful in the line if it’s your first time. Ask them for their recommendations. It’s a steady like that gets held up by the cashier/beverage lady. They need to keep those job functions separate to help the line along. I’d say the speed isn’t snappy but tolerable. PARKING: Plenty of parking we went around 3pm/4pm on a Friday. RECOMMEND: When you go order the 1 meat and 3 vegetables place. I ordered the 2 meats but wasn’t able to try desert which I regret now lol. Also make sure you go with a healthy appetite but not starving. Be sure to go with a group so you can each get something and you can all try out different things. DRAWBACKS: The location is small and the layout is not well organized because of the size of the structure. Also if you are coming from Helotes area it’s quite the drive so you really gotta make the effort to go. It’s a great place to go if you don’t mind traveling. It’s by where Big Lou’s is. Utensils are also a hard thing to find when you get your tray. The spoons and forks are what you might find at grandmas… not all from the same set. Finding a knife is a bit of a challenge in the end they gave me a plastic one from the to go area because the metal ones needed to be washed. The beverage/cashier area is confusing. No free refills unless Tea or Koolaid. Also the same girl getting you ice for your drink is the same one taking the money. Those functions need to be split. She also isn’t gonna ring you up till she looks at everybody’s tray in your party. A ticket system indicating what you ordered would be effective. Recent Food Inspection showed great marks from 4⁄2015.

Wonderful juicy fried chicken. First time I’ve tried Yams, super good(sugar? cinnamon? yummy goodness). Cornbread seemed kind of bland, and they are not open Saturday or Sunday. Seemed like real friendly folks, and the food was excellent, and reasonably priced.

The first time I went to Mr. and Mrs. G’s was in 2009 with a bunch of co-workers. I’m pleased to report that today it was just as good as my first visit! I went with my mom for lunch and the food was DELICIOUS!!! I had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes, squash and collard greens. OMG that fried chicken. Hands down some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. My mom had the fried pork chop with black eyed peas, collard greens and rice. Both of our meals came with a cornbread muffin. We also both had iced tea and sweet potato pie for dessert. We paid $ 40.79 for the two of us but it was well worth it for the amount of food. All of the staff were very friendly and answered our questions about the food. We will definitely be back! If you are on this side of town, do yourself a favor and come to this restaurant for a plate of home cooked comfort food.

After years since my last visit, I returned to Mr and Mrs G’s this week. What I remembered from my past experiences was how I needed a nap after eating such great comfort food. The place is as I remembered it. They are still set up for cafeteria style ordering(which I like). This week, I ordered the entrée with 3 sides(2 slices of meatloaf, cabbage, mashed potatoes, green beans and a cornbread roll). I paid under $ 10.00 which for the volume of food they serve was a deal! I ordered a tea but I liked how they still have kool aid on the drink selection. So how was the food? It was amazing like all the other times. The mash potatoes were second to none, the meat loaf flavorful and filling, the green beans transcended from a ho hum side to a flavorful tasty addition, the cabbage great(which can be lousy if a cook doesn’t know how to prepare them properly) and the cornbread roll perfect to pick up the gravy from the meatloaf. I loved every bit of what was served to me. I remember articles written on them like the one in Texas Monthly some time ago naming this place one of the 50 restaurants to try. I love this place. It’s not pretentious but it is home to some amazing food. Just be sure to leave time for a nap afterwards.
