Went to lunch here with my coworkers– the food was incredible, and the staff was very friendly, helpful, and professional. The owner let us try some fried pork which was delicious. I got the 2 piece white lunch special with two sides– the corn fritters were delicious! The Mac and cheese was ok, and so were the mashed potatoes. The corn bread was also very tasty and so was the sweet potato pie. Overall, I would highly recommend this small family business– the food is delicious, and they do a lot for the San Antonio community.

I’ve been here a few times now. This is not the best chicken in san antonio in my opinion. I eat chicken in some form at least 4 times /week. Perfectly ok if you re on this side of town. The greens do taste like Glory greens and the mac n cheese is completely forgettable. Had a slice of sweet potato pie that tasted like the pie I got at heb which isn’t bad just not that good. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Prices are cheaper than church’s and popeyes. If you’re on this side of town, go ahead and try it. They may throw an extra piece of chicken in there for you

Chatman’s Chicken: Parking: Reasonable. Location a little out of the way but worth the drive. Atmosphere:Everyone extremely friendly. Feels like you are eating at a family home with cousins. All staff very pleasant and prompt service. They provide recommendations. Chicken: Outstanding change from your usual Bush’s, Bill Miller, Popeyes, Churches and KFC. The original is like Churches but I think better and not as greasy. Riblet: I’ve never had a fried Riblet but these things are awesome! Loved loved loved it. Pros only fried in same vat as the Chicken. Sides: I do recommend the Corn Fritter! Outstanding! The Potato Salad is okay to me but could be great to you. Worth a try!

Very impressive, some of the best chicken I’ve had in SA. They have a choice between regular, spicy, and oregano. Try the riblets and corn fritters, don’t want to pass that up! The employees were friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend if you are in the area.

Can’t say this is the most appealing place in terms of the inside… nor is it in the BEST part of town… but I’m just here for the chicken. Got the 3piece mixed lemon pepper with corn fritters and greens. Sweet tea to drink. I really enjoyed the corn fritters. Greens were great… but I couldn’t figure out if they were fresh or canned. Sweet tea was a bit diluted with a strange after taste. THECHICKEN — good… but not the best I’ve ever had(I’m from the east coast and spent many years in N. C…so I know GREAT fried chicken). It’ll do if I want a craving for fried chicken other than Popeyes. The skin is so thick and crispy… I loved that part. But I wish it had the flavor of Maxs wine dive. Then we’d really be talking!

I’ve heard about Chatman’s Chicken for years. «You’ve got to try them. They’re the best.» Big words but could they really be that good. Well, I’ve tried most of the chicken places in town. In short, I LOVE fried chicken and have a personal ranking system of the best in town which takes into account the size of pieces, price, crust, flavor, greasiness, etc… Okay, I mean I crazy love fried chicken. So, I had chicken tenders from Chatman’s(lemon pepper seasoning) today. I tried their bone in chicken earlier this year. What’s my verdict? I’d say they are a solid contender for best fried chicken in San Antonio. I’ve still more fried chicken places to sample but Chatman’s is a serious contender for the crown.

Well after hearing great reviews from peers, I took my mom here to try it out. It looks like it use to be a «Long John Silvers». Mom ordered the gizzards and I had the riblets, we were both NOT impressed with all the hype! The riblets did not have any meat, mostly crusted bone and the gizzards were hard and chewy. The ONLY thing that was good was the potato salad. So over all experience, not so good :-(

Wow now this is a good place to grab some grub for some chow down. Had some fried chicken which was not bad and some fried Riblets which were pretty good. But let me tell you the lemon pepper flavored gizzards were of the hook. I was tended by Michael and he was awesome, he mentioned«you will be back» and I must say I will be back for those gizzards… you won’t regret them gizzards…

I ordered a 5 piece chicken tender with fries and corn fritters and a sweet tea on my first visit here and the total was about $ 10 and some change. It wasn’t bad considering that you’d pay about the same price at Bill Miller’s. Only minor let down was that Chatman’s was out of cream gravy. That’s okay since there was a bottle of hot sauce available at my table. The fries reminded me of Whataburger’s fries but with a hint of spiciness and the tenders were fresh and hot with no greasiness at all. Oh and the corn fritters are delish! Think of creamed corn covered in a fried batter. Not many restaurants carry them here in S.A. The service was friendly. A man was distributing information for a church function and you can hear your neighbors gossip at the next table.

I Love their food!!! Had their wings, fried riblets, mashed potatoes, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and gizzards. The collard greens taste like Glory collard greens in a can. They let you taste some of their food sometimes before you buy to see if it’s something you’ll like. They always give you great Customer service.

Our dining experience was nice and everything was tasteful. My mother had the catfish and liked it so much she went and found the cook to thank him. The staff is very helpful and look over the counter to make sure everyone is enjoying their meal or to tell them the amount of time left on their order. The chicken is very flavorful and one of the best I’ve tried in San Antonio. The fries are wonderful and fresh but the mac and cheese was not fresh we didn’t enjoy that part.

3 star rating is too low, especially on this side of town. I live in Lakeside and if you want chicken you can go to Bill Millers(no seasoning), Church’s(possibly good, but the one on Houston is notorious for dried out chicken) or Popeyes(my second choice, actually). Chatman’s has great prices, actual southern sides which are home made and nice, courteous staff. And also, a picture of Ron Wilkens, so, you know it is real.

I was totally disappointed in the restaurant this time around. It used to be my absolute must eat-fried-food-once-a-week place. The interior needs refurbishing badly – or lots of paint – as it just looks dirty. I ordered and sat waiting in the restaurant for over 30 minutes for my order. That was not my problem. I have to admire the owner mingling among the patrons checking with them to see how they were doing – but I was ignored. He walked past me three times – but i wasn’t the chick with the tight blouse that he could look down – and I wasn’t black. ?! I was appalled with my food when I got it home. I had a lot of food and spent a lot – fried livers, chicken, okra, poppers and corn fritters for three adults. We had one tiny container for eight large chicken livers. The livers left a strange bitter after-taste in my mouth – something was wrong with them.(I thought it was just me. You know how people’s taste buds change?) I could not even get the second one down. Yucky! The chicken and the batter were hard – as if they had been cooked too long. This dinner costing almost $ 31. went into the trash! I think it’s great that he hires kids from the local schools and they must maintain good grades but what happened to my Chatman’s?

Chatman’s serves some good, Southern style fried chicken. It’s not really zesty or spicy(although they have a spicy version) — but it’s got that Southern«thing» — something I call the«delicious blandness» to my Southern wife’s great amusement. All the great Southern food I’ve eaten has had this quality. .it doesn’t knock you over with flavor — it beguiles you, piece after piece, until you’ve eaten the whole box. I wouldn’t say it’s up there with the best of the best fried chicken I’ve had in the South East, but it’s very good. What holds it back for me is it has a slightly greasy taste. Not bad. . but enough to keep it out of the upper-eschelon. The sides are great, too — I *love* the greens. The mac and cheese is so creamy you get fat just by looking at it. The true test of fried chicken is how it tastes cold the next day. Chatman’s passes that test with flying colors. .. I didn’t even bother to get a plate. . just ate it standing over the sink. Chatman’s is good. I declare it so.

Great fried chicken! Very juicy and tender. Love the sides especially the collar greens and mac n cheese. I want to try the chicken fried steak next time.

This was our stop for National Fried Chicken day, and it was a-okay with me! We celebrated with style. They have a lot of options, so be prepared to make some tough decisions: dark meat, white meat, sides, corn fritters(you should NOT skimp on these), livers, gizzards, basically anything part of a chicken or fish that they have they will fry, and yeah, there’s just a lot of food available here. We opted for a mixed 12-piece meal, with a 2-liter of Coke, and some corn fritters for the four of us. There were leftovers, but they’re gone now, so don’t get any ideas. I’d definitely come back, there’s just too much to try in one visit. But if you’re planning on trying everything, take a teenager with you. They’ll pick up the slack.

All of the reviewers are right… the ones who say they love it and the ones who say it’s meh. Chatman’s chicken is a certain kind of fried chicken that exactly hits the spot when that’s what you want… and it’s a bit unsatisfying if you’re expecting something else. I recommend going in to check some fried chicken without any expectations that it’ll be awesome and see what you think. Don’t go craving Popeye’s, cos it ain’t Popeye’s. You get my drift. And give those fritters a try, too. Yeah, they’re just fried corn fritters, but sweet corn bursting out of a fried shell gives me the happys every time.
