Great food and wonderful atmosphere! We took a large group here and they were able to get us all seated and food delivered quickly even though they were quite crowded. The food was excellent!

The place has a tree through it! That’s about the most exciting thing about this café. That, and the cherry in my mimosa. Pictured is the spinach artichoke dip. It features store bought tortilla chips, what I suspect is canned artichokes and frozen spinach, and a sprinkle of feta swimming in a dish of margarine. Yep. Once I squeezed out the oil from the spinach and artichokes, I could eat it. Ya’ll. Make your own tortilla chips. Oil, corn tortillas, salt, boom. Next I had a ribeye and salad. Salad was standard, dressing was ghastly. I know wishbone Italian dressing when I see it, and this was wishbone with oil and vinegar added. Tsk tsk. Lazy. How hard is it to purée some garlic, shallot, onion, honey, sugar, lemon juice, oil and vinegar with some spices? There ya go, that one’s for free. You’re welcome. Next, the steak. Cooked perfectly, however, I could not detect a speck of salt on it, let alone anything else. I understand the clientele is older, but seriously not even a little salt and pepper? I would recommend the place only to someone who was looking for a place in the area. I would not recommend anyone go out of their way for this. Pretty disappointed, I honestly expected better. This place shows all the signs of lost passion.

The service was okay, but there food was not good at all. My hubby ordered steak and shrimp and the shrimps were not cooked at all. The steak tasted like meat, no flavor at all. We had chips and salsa and the salsa was bland and watery(if that is the correct way to describe it). The drinks were just as awful. Watered down and not alcohol at all. Needless to say we will not be coming back or recommending it to anyone.

Excellent local spot next to the freeway, prices are reasonable for steak. I shared the 12oz ribeye with my wife and it was pretty good, juicy and flavorful. We sat outside since we had to wait a while for a party of of 8. The inside was packed, so even with the small AC on, it was a little like a sauna in there, so tables outside are good.

I tried this on a whim and it was absolutely amazing. The El Ray burger was the best I had ever had, and I will be back before my trip is over. Wonderful staff and truly delicious food!

Not a fancy place by any means. .but a local recommended it so we gave it a try. The cheese dip was very cheesy. .not the white kind I prefer but the hubby liked it. We both had steak… I the sirloin and he the t-bone. Both were cooked right and very yummy. Glad we made the trek our here.

Relic of the past that didn’t keep up? Food is bordering on inedible-disgusting. Service is slow and inattentive. Full bar has no draft beer. Take the good ambience/atmosphere and update the menu and service to match it. It’s 2016; for the same money you can do a lot better in this town.

The best homemade burger and fries I’ve had in a very long time I’m a San Antonio native who honestly would go nowhere else for his burger. The prices are so fair in the location so great I myself go downtown to school and I find myself just traveling on the other side to go have a great meal at a great location this really is a hidden gem of San Antonio. If you a tourist or out of towner I suggest that you would at least give this place a try and I promise you won’t regret it best restaurant I’ve ever eaten in the pearl area. And as for those who already live here I’m surprised you haven’t been here before. If I could give this place six stores I would.

Nearest steakhouse thats not on the riverwalk. The best of SA has to offer. just a short minute ride away from the riverwalk. Great food! The outside patio seating was a plus. The wait staff at times can get extremely busy but this was on a weekday. otherwise i would of given 5stars.

I had the steak and my wife had the fish. The steak was okay and her fish was good. I am use to eating baked potato with my steak and my only option here is house fries. That is the wrong answer. It is away from the riverwalk and the wife and I enjoyed that alone.

wow! i pass this place all the time and the neon signs draw me in. went for lunch with coworkers and enjoyed ourselves. we sat next to the big tree. we started with the sausage and onions with chips then chips with tomatillo. i liked the sausage app a lot better. it’s a big plate to share with queso. yummm. i ordered the club and it was huge! i didn’t even eat half. the onion rings on the side were delish too. also tried the welt salad. it was a little too much dressing for me. our server was super attentive. free parking under the freeway. will be back.

If you are in a hurry don’t come here. But that means the food is good!!! Had a cheeseburger with onions and mushrooms on the side and it was delicious. The onion rings are killer. Everything looked amazing and all our guests enjoyed their meal. Just wish we had drink refills more often… But that’s it!

Very cool restaurant. Great atmosphere. Noisy. Noisy enough to where it feels private. Tree growing out of the middle of the floor. Very cool. Good steaks. Great menu. Fantastic onion rings. Highly recommend. Nice place to visit when you’re in San Antonio. Off the beaten path.

Delicious! Almost missed the restaurant. It is a small white house with plenty of parking space on the side. All the steaks are cooked perfectly and well seasoned.

One of my friends visiting from back home, NC, came to town and while walking to the pearl I smelled the most delicious steak ever! I knew I had to try this place because the steak was so fragrant that it literally had the entire block salivating. I ordered the steak with blackened shrimp and mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were excellent in taste but texture was a little off and somewhat dry, the flavor was on point though. The blackened shrimp was delicious and had a little spicy kick to it but not overwhelming with hotness. And of course my whole reason for coming… the steak! Womp womp womp I was so sad. I let someone else try some it they said«It just taste like meat» and honestly that’s exactly how it tastes. Tough, no seasoning, no flavor. It just tasted hard and meaty. Everything else was good. I would to going back again because this is Texas and I mean if anyone state knows steak it’s Texas. Maybe it was just an off day because they had a ton of people there so they do something right.

My second visit to this SA staple, and I am a Chicken Fried Steak convert. This would never be my first choice on a restaurant menu, but for some Saturday NFL watching I couldn’t resist. The CFS came out crispy and hot. I loved the mash potatoes as a side, though next time I might try something green. What surprised me most was how much I liked the gravy. I’m not a gravy person and always ask for it in the side, but it was delicious. I took half to go and ordered the Pecan Raspberry pie a la mode. The subtle taste of pecan was a perfect winter treat to share at the table. We even joked that we wanted another round of dessert. I’ll definitely return!

This was our first visit, we decided to sit outside to enjoy the last few days of pleasant weather and was told to pick a bench we liked. We were served promptly. I asked for water with lemon and immediately knew that wasn’t going to happen as she asked what my husband wanted before I even finished ordering. She returned with our drinks and took our order, I knew the moment she didn’t write anything down that any changes we made to our order would not be done. Yes I was right. I ordered the blackened chicken sandwich. The blackened seasoning is an extra .99 cents, I chose the onion rings for an additional 2 dollars while the hubby got the fresh sliced fries. Chicken sandwich was hot! Bonus, fries were hot but the onion rings were not. Beef sandwich was hot but the cheese straight out of the fridge was not melted in the least bit. It’s popular for people at lunch from work but I’m not sure if I’m willing to give them my money again.

My wife and I decided that for our one year anniversary we would finally check out Jo street. We went on a Saturday at around 5 pm because I was concerned about not getting a table as I always see this place packed out. It was pretty dead inside surprisingly. We sat down and started taking in the atmosphere. I had assumed it was a little more«upscale» based on the clientele I see frequent it for lunch meetings etc but it has this sort of country diner feel to it while I was hoping it would be more speak-easy like with the huge neon ‘whisky’ and ‘steal’ signs in the windows. Anyway, I ordered the NY Strip medium with the homemade chips. My wife ordered their Cajun chicken and broccoli. The food came extremely quickly. Unfortunately for 23 dollars the NY Strip was extremely underwhelming. After ordering it medium I received it medium well and very fatty. The outside of the steak was not seared at all. My wife’s chicken was very good but also had a very fatty skin layer she had to remove. Both sides were excellent. Portions were decent for the price. Mixed drinks and beers are priced less than most other bars in the area which is a plus. The waitress seemed flustered the whole time we were there and, while she was very nice, the service was awkward. She asked us if we wanted any bread five minutes after we got our meals and forgot what beer I had ordered when she went to make the ticket and had to come back to retrieve the bottle. I think she was new and I can understand being thrown into a Saturday shift for the first time. All in all a solid 4 if you’re not looking for a steak. This part was the most frustrating as I specifically wanted a good anniversary steak. We will def be back as we live at the Pearl and their location is so convenient for walking to.

Josephine Street is the epitome of ‘hidden gem’ as it’s located under an overpass. If the cool neon lights, charming patio and huge tree inside wrapped in lights isn’t enough to lure you in, this review should do it for you. I was hanging out with my parents and we all agreed the idea of combining lunch and dinner(linner) with a steak sounded superb. Unilocal brought us here and we couldn’t have enjoyed ourselves and craving for a meat treat more. There are many different kinds of steaks to choose from. I went with the filet wrapped in bacon. Flavor-rama! I didn’t need to add any sauce or salt — it was wonderful. Best part? The prices here are insanely reasonable! I walked away only spending about $ 16 for my steak and side. The atmosphere is pure Texas: hard wood floors & antiqued décor. Can’t wait to go back in the cooler months to try a cocktail on the patio!

After seeing their chef on Great Day SA today, we decided to give Josephine Street Restaurant a try. Wife and I were downtown anyway to pick up auction wins at KLRN. We were both hangry, so we went for the beef tenderloin salad. We were very impressed with the generous amount of beef, which was well-seasoned and so tender, it melted in our mouths. Their onion rings are AWESOME! Cornmeal breading, which had a nice texture and just sweet enough, and HUGE! I don’t know what kind of onions they used(I’m guessing Texas sweets… Vidalias would work well with this breading also), but they were just dandy and tasty! We were in a relaxed mood after we left… when we walked in, we were jumping down each other’s throats. Good food has that magic touch. Service was excellent(of course this is in mid-afternoon, well after the lunch rush). I did notice the classic bar, which does have a wide assortment of spirits and beer to quench your thirst. We had Coke instead this go round. However… ahem, Jo Street… please try to make an effort to get your tea sweet. I do not go well for unsweet. That’s okay, you still ROCK with those awesome o-rings! We will have to return for the famous CFS and, of course, a shot of whusky or two(credit the Sons of the Pioneers for that reference).

First off when we drove up I was pretty sure we wouldn’t get in. So many cars. So I was wrong and we did. Our server was Cindy and she recommended the sausage and queso appetizer. We ordered it and we were quite happy. A large platter of tortilla chips(real ones, not store bought) with a bowl of queso, slices of sausage and chunks of sweet onion. Almost a meal to itself. The husband ordered the regular ribeye with mashed and cream gravy. All gone in about ten minutes. I had the blackened catfish with the house fries. I had kept the leftover queso and poured it on my fries. Yummy. The catfish was not overly blackened, which was great. Good flavor. Cindy our server was great and kept our ice teas filled and then offered dessert, which we had no room for. Go here.
