Tropical Isle is just one of those crazy touristy spots you visit and then slightly regret when you later realize how many times you included your new toy shark in your trippy trip photos. I have nothing to say for myself on that front, but the hand grenade and shark attack drinks were surprisingly not terrible despite being oddly bright and completely unnatural. As you probably know, you’ll get an interestingly shaped souvenir plastic cup when you order your grenade, and you can refill it and walk around. I would say you should try one drink, maybe avoid having two in a short period of time, and don’t even think about drinking three of these things unless you want to be completely out of your mind. But definitely stop in once. At least to get a new toy.

I never want to have another grenade but need to thank my grenade(s) for supplying the antics and a great time for my first full day in New Orleans. You really can’t get much more touristy than Tropical Isle. I say this half in a good one and half in a bad way. The drinks are really sweet and the souvenir glass is silly, however the bar is fun and it inaugurates you into the grenade club. There’s no actual club, but I feel no one should visit New Orleans with this touristy rite of passage. They have a little menu that includes a guide about drinking grenades. Drink #1 will make you happy, Drink #2 will give you a nice buzz, Drink #3 will result in a complete loss of your inhibitions, Drink #4 will cause you to dance in the streets(females may be prompted to show theirs t*ts) and Drink #5 you’re on your own. Probably should have paid a little more attention to the guide… The servers were nice and it was a great time. For a large drink that comes with a plastic glass, the price is right. All refills are a $ 1 off. I did not have a Shark Attack but being around people who ordered them were a blast! I’m okay never doing it again though. Daydreaming of a glass of water paired with a fine cocktail right now.

What can I say I’m a sucker for hand grenades and stupid arcade games. Spent a couple of nights during my recent visit to New Orleans sipping on their signature drink, listening to the live band and playing erotic what’s the difference in the area towards the back. Number 3 and number 7 on the high score list by the way. Stick with the hand grenades, the horny gator isn’t as tasty. Staff is fun and friendly, place is clean enough and a must visit on any stroll of Bourbon.

These hand grenades don’t play! Thy definitely do the job for $ 12! I would rather much have these than hurricanes. They taste more citrusy and pack a more sour punch. Because they’re delicious and refreshing tasting, it’ll keep you addicted. By the end of the bottle you’ll be swirled up!

Another outpost of Tropical Isle, home of the Hand Grenade and a few other drinks in quirky glasses. It’s a dive and it loves being a dive. Live music on some nights, and the place is always open. Not as good as the bigger one,(better balconies at the bigger one), but still, if you crave a Hand Grenade, head here.

This is one of my all-time favorite Bourbon Street bars. Seriously! I spent many nights over 2 Mardi Gras experiences at Tropical Isle and the band is fun and engaging. They play music I know and everyone can actually sing to — and trust me… people SING! Why do they sing so much, you ask? Well… this is the bar with the famous Hand Grenades. I have no idea what is in them. Doesn’t matter. They are good, good, good and not all alcohol-y — but, they hit you like… well…I’m assuming a hand grenade?! Go enjoy the fun!

We did the touristy and came in to get a hand grenade because this is the only place that serves them. We walked right in and were immediately seen(it was a Friday afternoon) and served. We opted for the smaller size(comes in a cup) because we were trying to somewhat pace ourselves. Very good and delicious. Was a sweet drink and could not taste the alcohol… but we did begin to feel it. There are a band playing so we sat and enjoyed the atmosphere. The place also has these nets on the roof where you can attempt to throw the grenade that comes with your drink so that was entertaining to watch.

I did the tourist thing here and at Pat O’s. At least the notorious hand grenades– even though obviously sweet– had a decent taste to them and pack a punch. Think midori sours spiked with 151. Ok to try once.

We heard we had to get hand grenades. So what did we do? We went to get them. We went during the day and this place was pretty low key. The options were to get it frozen or on the rocks. They said that on the rocks was stronger so we went with that. Let’s just say we had a wonderful rest of the day after this! The bartenders were friendly!

This place has been our go to for years!!! It’s funny how you can be a tourist amongst thousands of other tourist & make friends with the locals. We’ve met the owners plenty of times & Pam is the sweetest lady ever. Our favorite tall bartender(Tim) always remembers us & always makes us a special shot on our last day b4 we leave(he’s part of our drink tradition) my favorite is the live band with the lead singer Debi & she makes us feel like family whenever we come. Now let’s get to the drinks… the infamous Hand Grenade as a tourist you will see people with the green hand grenade cups all up & down Burbon St. well let me suggest don’t get it slushie style if you plan on drinking more than 1 get it on the rocks & you’ll thank me later. My other favorite drink is the shark attack which the place makes a big commotion about plus you’ll get a lil’ shark to take back home for the kiddie!

Guys, this place is dangerous. In fact, my stomach is rumbling at the mere thought of all those rum drinks I put down during my recent trip to New Orleans. There’s some good news. While the sickeningly sweet grenade drinks are poured straight from a bar gun, there are some drinks on the menu that are a little less suspect. The Pirate’s Passion is made of 151 rum, Malibu and pineapple juice. No added syrups or sugars or anything. Drink one so you can get the whole Bourbon Street thing out of your system and then switch to something lighter. Don’t drink several. Trust me. Love that they feature bands and especially love the request system, which is one of those bank tube thingies that suctions your container of requests(and your tip for the band, of course) over the bar and to the band. Last but not least, props to the bartenders, who pour the same drinks over and over and who maintain the same high level of theatrics every time someone orders a Shark Attack.

GRENADES! You order at the front, I think they only have one thing — the grenades. You can get large ones or small ones but the regular size was perfect for 2 people to share. The frozen one has a slushy type texture, which made it even easier to drink. They are called grenades because they have a little face on the bottom of the bottle and a plastic grenade that sits on top, so cute and definitely picture worthy! The taste is almost a melon-type fruity drink but not overly sweet like the hurricane. I could barely taste the alcohol and I can always taste the alcohol. It’s pretty strong though and after a few sips I was already feeling it. I’m not sure what the difference is between this place and the other tropical isles but we got it from a different one the next day and it tasted the same to me.

FROZENGRENADES! This is the only location(I think) that sells frozen Grenades; frozen is better! There’s an easy and fast To Go line. The bartenders that served me each time were all very excited and enthusiastic about it haha

Love love love. Ok, so this place is where you go to get a drink and walk through Bourbon. It is your run of the mill bar. Kind of a young crowd but for $ 8 you can get a well poured long island. What else do you need? Friendly bartenders, fruity drinks and good prices. Check it out!

Nothing like a giant, blacklight-reflective cup of melon-flavoured antifreeze to get you going on a hot, sunny day in NOLA. Hand Grenades are poison, especially if you’re not a big drinker(I’m big, but not a drinker). I had 2 in the span of 15 mins and I was out on the street, puking quietly into a cup of water. I wish I could give these zero stars but the bartender working that day was awesome. She got me a cup of ice chips and called me a cab within minutes of me doing the ol’ Technicolor yawn. So yeah, if you’re not used to this kind of thing, stay away. Learn from my mistakes!

Man oh man tropical isle you were so fun but I won’t miss going back. I had my fair share of grenades and I am feeling it still. What are in them?!! No one knows– but the added bonus of a plastic grenade to use to launch at a basket(or other people) kept the night entertaining. I also somewhat fell in love with bartender Matt from Milwaukee. Hi Matt.

To be honest, I’m not a real big fan of Bourbon Street, so I was quite pleased to find this place on the corner without having to walk down Bourbon. From Jackson Square just head north on Toulouse street. You can’t miss the bar on your right side at the corner of Bourbon. The drink is quite interesting. Very sweet, very green, and pretty high alcohol content. Not sure I would have wanted another. Perhaps if it was 95 and sunny, but at a comfortable 80& in the shade, one was just fine. Definitely a must stop when in town though.

This is not a bar you hang around in… go in, get a hand grenade and go. And only drink one. I promise, you’ll thank me for that advice! They are so strong that you’ll be buzzed by the time you reach the end of Bourbon. If you do want to hang out and stay close to the hand grenades, go to The Funky Pirate and listen to Big Al Carson. It’s an experience.

Weather you are day drinking or night drinking this is the place to do it! Hand Grenades are the way to do it! They are very sweet almost to much so but Very strong so watch out! The music is loud and the bartenders nice and funny. I come here on every trip and will be back!
