So, this place seems to have a real estate monopoly on Thai food restuarants on its one square block on 44th Street. There are like 7 different versions of the place on the east side of 9th Avenue. Still, this may be a good thing as I found the thai food to be pretty damn good. The ambiance is low rent and depressing. Neon lights, small cheap table, a staff that watched you eat. But despite all that, the food was mighty tasty. Definitely better than Amber’s restaurant which I’ve also Unilocaled. And it’s much cheaper too.

On occasion, I’ll go out for lunch and pick up something from Yum Thai. I usually order the same two items: beef salad with a spicy lime dressing, and their special dumplings, which are shrimp and crab. The do a fine job with both. Though the dumplings come out a bit greasy, I really love the taste and texture. As for the salad, the beef is usually tender even while doused in dressing, but it never seems like enough meat for the price. Also, it’s a little sad that they use beefsteak tomatoes which never seem ripe enough. Still, it’s close to work and I do like both dishes. I recommend people try it once and see what they think.

I’m always scared of coming here because of the hole-in-the-wall-with-possible-rats-running-about atmosphere. However, it is a hop across the street from work and the food’s decent, so I’ll still come back if I want some Thai food close-by. The meat of the stir-fry dishes can be a little dry, so I usually stick to the oh-so-safe Pad Thai. The prices are too high for a take-out place like this($ 7 – 8 per dish during lunch and $ 5 for a summer roll), especially when I had to wait 20 minutes once for my food due to a small staff. During lunchtime, it gets so crowded that I feel like I’m going to be squeezed out of the joint. Ok, so I lied when I said that this is a take-out place earlier. There ARE seats/tables, but it hardly qualifies as a restaurant because it’s not private enough for a meal since people waiting for their take-out orders are hovering over the diners. I agree with Scott R, only come here if you must. I would’ve given Yum Thai 3 stars for their food, but I’m taking a star away because you don’t get the most for your dollar.

There are few good lunch options in midtown. The Kati Roll joint moved — Minar and Margon are both great. Yum Thai is really the only other under $ 10 place within a quick walk from 45th and 6th that I go to on a regular basis. It is fairly cheap, fast and good. The curry is not my favorite at Yum — but the noodles — Pad Kee Mao and Pad Thai are both very good. If I am on my own for lunch and not using the Amex — this is a great place to go.

Have you ever wished you could make bets on «Most likely place within a mile radius of getting busted by the Board of Health» or «Most likely restaurant other than Taco Bell to be tied to food poisoning?» Well, this is that kind of place. It’s a dingy thai place that makes okay thai food. The pad thai is serviceable. I gambled with a chicken dish once and, in retrospect, feel pretty confident it was indeed chicken. Thai iced tea was decent. All in all, if you HAVE to have Thai in this area and can’t manage a walk down to Pongsri Thai b/w 7th and 8th ave or to the 9th ave Thai places, this place may be worth the bet. But while there’s no bookie who’ll accept my earlier proposed wager, don’t say I didn’t warn you if you come out on the losing end at this place.

I so was happy to find a Thai place near my office. I went there happily a few times. I was not disappointed in the cost and food but then one day they served me barely cooked meat and I could NOT return. So visit but be wary.
