I used to do my straightening treatment here with Alison. Really sweet girl and great results. Until I asked her to make my hair a little more straight ad she started to pass product in the ends of the hair (were it was treated previously by her) and a lot more product at the top. I don’t know what went wrong, but my hair got all frizzled, fried and broken with the pass of the days. My hair got so weak that I cut a short bob. I am still dealing with the frizzle broken hair on the top and breakage of hair all over. I hate complaining and personally like Allison, but I call her to complain she said she would call me back and never did. Really disappointed! Terrible customer service. I was a client for 3 years!

I was impressed by the level of customer service. Janet listened carefully to what I wanted and gave me the haircut I wanted. I am very pleased with the results and will be going back.

Allyson is amazing!
I’ve been getting chemical treatments done to my hair for over 10 years. I’ve tried Brazilian blowout, Japanese straightening (have done this multiple times), and more and cannot express how happy I am with the UBERLISS treatment Allyson gave me. With the other treatments your hair can become extremely dry, dull, and stringy; however the Uberliss treatment left my hair looking extremely healthy and hydrated (I am shocked! and delighted!). I decided to go with the «full blown» Uberliss treatment, which removes 90% of the curl. I have very thick, frizzy, tight curls that even Japanese straightening has a hard time taming on some parts of my head (my curl grows in thicker/​looser on different parts of my head). With the Uberliss there is still loose wave to my hair, but I love it! It’s manageable and if I want to blow it out or straighten it — it takes no time at all (15 min) and looks amazing (silky smooth — which my hair has NEVER been) — no kinks at the crown of your head from «missing» a spot with the flat iron. I really can’t recommend this treatment enough!
One thing that you should keep in mind when researching Uberliss are the «before and after» photos because they aren’t necessarily accurate of the end result. When the process is finished (usually when they take the «after» photo) the hair has been flat ironed stick straight. This is NOT what your hair is going to look like once you wash it (72 hours later). Now, if you have loose curls to begin with and you get this treatment done to completely eliminate your curls, then it might. But, if you have fairly curly hair, your expectation of this treatment shouldn’t be to completely rid your hair of curl. Instead, it will reduce it by up to 90% and make it completely frizz-​free and manageable. It will look amazing, I promise!
Lastly, I cannot say enough nice things about Allyson. She went above and beyond to answer my questions and never got frustrated with me when I was trying to understand the process. She was so accommodating (as was the entire staff at Janet Rufin’s Parlor) and made the entire experience so wonderful! I created a Unilocal account purely to write this about her because I feel like I needed to tell everyone about Allyson and her talent using the Uberliss treatment. I am so happy with the end result and I will absolutely be back once my unruly hair shows up again. Thank you Allyson!!!

I have a head full of gray hair. Jackie C. is the only colorist that has been able to make ALL my gray disappear! The color always compliments my complexion. She takes her craft seriously. So when you visit the Janet Rufin Salon, ask for Jackie C., you won’t be disappointed!

Jackie is great! She recently gave me a full head of highlights. I am new to New York from San Diego and left my dedicated colorist. It’s a big change to let someone else do your hair but without a doubt Jackie did an excellent job! Highly recommend her to anyone and everyone!

OMG! Tom is the best! He gave me a new do and it is spectacular! He listened to what I wanted, said I love my job, and proved it. I love his job too and I’ve gotten compliments galore. Very reasonably priced for the neighborhood, they took me on time and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Tom’s the man at Janet Rufin!

I finally found someone who can properly cut my unmanageable curly frizzy hair. Allyson did an amazing job, she really listened to me when I told her what I was looking for. She, along with the rest of the team was very welcoming. For once I can leave a salon and not have to run home and redo my hair!

I love Maggie. I may never let anyone else ever touch my hair! Within seconds of taking my hair down, she knew exactly what kind of work my hair needed. She gave me some really great tips on how to take care of my hair, and then suggested both *pricey* and more affordable shampoos to use on my hair. Before I could even show her a picture of the kind of haircut I was thinking of, she started suggesting the exact kind of cut I wanted! I appreciated that she listened to what I wanted and then shaped my hair appropriately. She was very, very meticulous about checking that layers were even and that it would lay just right no matter which way I part my hair. She is just the right amount of chatty and so, so friendly! When I left, she gave me shampoo samples and told me to call her with any questions. I am definitely coming back here.

I can’t comment on their services because they won’t even call me back so I can make an appointment! I bought a Groupon and called to make an appointment. I let them know I had a Groupon (as you are supposed to do) and I was told a stylist would call me back after they took my name and number. After nobody called me, I called again a few days later. Same exact exchange happened. After the third time calling with no call back, I gave up, called Groupon, and got my money back. Don’t bother with these people.

I went in last week with a groupon for cut and highlights. Immediately Janet was very professional and informed me that for what I wanted I would need full highlights (Groupon was for partial) and how much extra Id have to pay which I appreciated. Janet did my color and Allyson did my cut, and both were so friendly and clearly experts– I was so happy and they gave me the same care and attention they give customers paying in full which is rare. A week later I realized my highlights were a bit to blond in the front and since I was getting married in a week they squeezed me in immediately and Janet did my color correction, which was minor, no questions asked!
Definitely coming back for my next cut and color– highly recommend!

I can’t not stop raving about Janet Rufin Palor. I have nothing but good things to say about this place.
First of all, I had no trouble getting an appointment. The receptionist was helpful and super pleasant on the phone.
On the day of my appointment, I called to inform them that I was running 10mins late. To my surprise, the receptionist didn’t give me any attitude and thanked me instead for letting them know. That’s a rare thing in NYC.
I had the pleasure of having Allyson as my stylist. She was so friendly and professional from the minute she introduced herself to the end of the appt. Prior to receiving the Armada Style e-​Cure, I had a very thorough consultation. Not only was Allyson a good listener, she was able to execute. In addition, Allyson was extremely meticulous with making sure both sides of my hair are even. I’m extremely happy with my haircut which consist of side bangs and long layers.
If you are in need of a hair stylist like I was, look no further than Allyson at Janet Rufin Palor. She was great with my long, thick hair and I’m sure she will be great with yours.

Horrible experience. A dog was walking around the salon the entire time which gave the salon a foul odor. The presence of this canine seemed unhygienic. I had scheduled an up-​do and makeup application. The up-​do took about 15 – 20 minutes. I was not happy with the outcome. I decided to forego the makeup application based on the results of the up-​do. I was initially going to be charged $ 120. I let the stylist know my displeasure with the service rendered. She dropped the price to $ 60. On my walk back to my apartment a piece of hair came undone. Obviously it was a rush job with a high price tag. Will never come back here.

This place is AMAZING! I received the Pravana treatment from Allyson, and it was a fantastic experience. This was the first time I have ever done anything to my hair. I loved my curls, but I was finding them to be hard to manage recently and I was unhappy more often than not.
Allyson spent 20 minutes explaining the treatment, and answering my 100s of questions. I didnt feel rushed at all. We started with a wash, cut, and then the Pravana treatment. She explained every step of the process, and managed my expectations as to what would happen over the next 3 months of having the treatment.
I could not be happier. My hair looks fabulous and is so easy to manage. I use minimal product (vs the 4+ gels and creams i was putting in my hair every day).
I have already told 10+ curly haired people to go here and ask for Allyson specifically.
I already bought and booked my next appointment.

Came here yesterday with a Groupon and I was so happy with my experience. They didn’t treat me badly because I used a Groupon, which happens often with salons. They offer sangria to customers and all the staff is very nice.
I got a haircut from Eugene who was just lovely. He took time to talk through what I wanted and then gave some suggestions. He really took his time to thoughtfully cut my hair and check in with me along the way.
I would highly recommend !

This place is amazeballs.
I came here with a Groupon for a conditioning treatment + cut back in May. I was booked with Eugene, who took his time talking to me about what I wanted and what worked best for my hair. I’m usually the quiet type when it comes to talking to stylists, but we connected over music, art, yoga, etc. Eugene rules. He took his time cutting and styling. At the end, he let my hair air dry which I appreciated because usually once I’m home and have washed my hair, I can’t recreate what magical thing a stylist did that one time. It looked great when I left and I knew this is how it would look every time I washed and air dried my hair.
It’s now 4 months since I got the cut and I’m STILL getting compliments on my hair. Eugene (and I’m sure everyone else) at Janet Rufin’s is a miracle worker and I would be more than happy to splurge at their salon again, even without the Groupon.

Came here by chance with a Groupon nearly two years ago to try out a Keratin treatment. Janet herself quickly took a look at my hair and suggested that my hair would take to the Pravana treatment much better than the Keratin… and still honored the Groupon. Two years later, I am a regular customer and still get the same treatment. All of their stylists that have cut or treated my hair are fantastic — I’ve had cuts, highlights and the Pravana treatment, and even got blunt bangs for the first time here. The staff is friendly, trustworthy, and really will help to advise you on the right style, treatment and cut based on what you are envisioning.
If I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would!

Have you ever run, not walked, home to write a rave? Well now I have. I got the works — haircut, low lights, highlights. Poor Megan had to mix formula twice because I have so much hair, but Lordy do I appreciate her work. Like complimenting strangers on the street so happy.
Also, the salon’s dog is adorable. She greets everyone who walks in. Trust me, you can stop looking. You’ve found your next salon.

Well I dyed my hair for the first time at Janet’s and may I say– AWESOME experience.
The colorist was on point– personable, a conversationalist, and knew exactly what she was doing. She was also VERY excited about dying my hair… «virgin» hair is a colorists’ dream apparently. haha. I wish I knew what color she used in my hair because I LOVE it and have gotten many compliments.
My haircut (done by Janet herself) was great and she was well-​informed. Knew exactly what kind of cut would be good for my hair type (curly) and promised not to hack. I hate stylists who are scissor happy. Thankfully she was NOT.
My only complaint would be the blow-​out; it lacked. I’ve had MUCH better blow-​outs but in their defense it was raining outside. Yikes! Hair nightmare, right? Oh and someone’s huge golden retriever was running around the place— and I’m highly allergic to dogs. Didn’t want to be a B**** and say something. Ehk.
Would totally come back here!

How do I know when I have gotten a great haircut? When it still looks great after I wash out the styling. I’m considering on putting Maggie P. on speed dial.
The salon is located on the second floor, of Irving Pl. If yo know the area then you know this is a lovely location, a few blocks away from the easily accessible Union Sq. but without all the madness. Janet Rufin’s Parlor is a great space with huge windows and wonderful staff. Everyone I met were very pleasant and courteous.
My appointment was with Maggie P. OMG, I’m so glad I found her. She really knows her craft. She listens to you, will analyze the look you want and explain what will work and why. There was great communication, you know what is going on at every step.
I love that in the end she explained to me what she did exactly with my haircut, so I could get the look and shape I (have always) wanted.
Overall, it was a great experience and I will be back.
