OBSCENE!!! I got avocado, scrambled eggs, extra sharp cheddar, on top of butter chicken and basmati rice, topped with raita and cilantro mint chutney. After I ordered and shelled out 13 $ for this meal, then I looked at the Unilocal reviews. I was worried that I made a mistake. But then they gave me my meal, which was actually generously sized. I took a bite. Absolutely delicious. Perfectly ripe avocado, flavorful cheese, perfectly cooked eggs, the chicken was delicious too, the sauces were the perfect complement. Avocado, scrambled eggs, and cheese are among my favorite foods, and the pairing with the Indian food… I loved it. It’s not 5 stars because it was 13 $ which seems a little high. I will definitely eat this again though.

When you at Dosateria, you are on display. You eat in the middle of a supermarket, forming a ring around the area where they prepare the South Indian meals. I assume a prominent location is meant to drive more shoppers to put down their baskets and dine in the middle of the store. The store designers should hope that the potential diners don’t see the grimaces once the food is served. I love that we live in an age where regional Indian food is not available, but is available inside a major supermarket. Unfortunately, Whole Foods has managed to neuter the taste in bringing this to the bourgeoisie masses. I ordered an uttapam, the thick pancake formed by a batter of dal and rice and topped with spice. The pre-selected set of toppings included cheese, avocado and a chutney sauce for dipping. It is a thick calorie bomb, with crispy edges. It tasted like nothing. Despite being advertised as one of their spicy offerings, this was just carbohydrates stacked on top of other carbohydrates. Nothing really stood out. Other reviews here point to some better experiences with the dosas on offer, but I can’t say this inspired much confidence.

Tried dosateria for lunch today. Ordered a dosa with meatballs. Service was very fast and the staff very nice and friendly. This is where the nice ends and fugley begins. Food on the other hand was another story– the meatballs lacked any flavor what so ever. Bland doesn’t even describe the chunks of ground meat which were a sorry excuse for any filling. The dosa batter was probably laced with sugar to speed up fermentation. Unsure how the owner of this joint have the audacity to call the sweet/sour lentil and veggie mix concoction sambhar. Good for the owners of this joint that the majority of patrons who eat here can’t differentiate between authentic and bullshit which they’re being served. Anywhere else, the doors would be forced shut by now — for serving crap in the name of Indian crêpe. Suggestion to the chef — go back to dosa school and start from level 001– try using spices– might sound like a new concept– but believe me– it’s been around for millennia Owners– shame on you for charging premium prices and not holding up your end of the bargain– Four stars for service and –1 star for shit in the name of food.

Lovely food. Bombay frankie and utappam were what we had. Every time i come to this place i love it even more. And definitely dont miss their sugar cane juice. They are located inside whole foods at downtown manhattan and has nice seating arrangement around their kitchen. If you are looking for a romantic ambience you wont find it here but if you are looking tasty indian food you wont be disappointed.

the ginger mint lemonade was amazing. reading the label they add a touch of salt to the drink. It’s a must have here, that’s 5 stars just for the drink. I had ‘the classic’ dosa which was very good with excellent green chutney pairing. I wish I had ordered a second chutney to try as a side. The soup it comes with is ok. Also tried the butter chicken which was great and the avocado lassi which is very rich and made for a good milkshake type dessert. Definitely worth eating here but at the very least get the lemonade.

1 year Update: 3÷5÷14 Last year I over-rated this place at 1 star(see my review below). This year, I’m happy to report that this place has significantly improved. The dosa crêpe was perfect: thin, flaky, delicious! Filling is well balanced. Chutney is finally edible. To-go packaging still sucks, but you can eat at the counter, which is a nice alternative. Solid food and drinks! Great job, Wholefoods! ______________________________________________ Reviewed: 2÷7÷13 Least favorite meal for the past couple of MONTHS! I also had the Classic dosa and had a very disappointing experience. At first it was too bland and then at the end of it, there was so many Huge chili flakes that it set my mouth on fire. The chutney, if you can call it that, was too watery and garlicky. I wasn’t a big fan of the crêpe, either. The container that you get with the dosa is too large and uncomfortable for take out. Meanwhile the soup paper container was half empty and was super bland and watery. This is so strange to say, but it felt like mass produced food. Nothing special about it. The only star of the lunch wasn’t the food at all, but the Mango Lassi(the yogurt drink). Not too sweet and pleasantly fruity. I could taste a hint of cardamom and other interesting spices. Very refreshing!

I was so excited to see the addition of the Dosateria when I went to Whole Foods last night; I’m always up for Indian street food. The Dosateria operates much like a Chipotle or some other assembly line convenience food venue– first you decide in what format you want your meal(dosa, frankie, uttapam), then you pick a filling, and then you pick a chutney, after which your chosen ingredients will be assembled into a meal. I opted for the Classic signature dish, which contains spiced potatoes, in the form of a frankie. Having tasted alu kati rolls from The Kati Roll Co., the former Indian Bread Co., Bombay Frankie, Liebe, Nizami Rolls, and more, I knew what to expect. Unfortunately, the roll was atrociously bland. The potato filling tasted as though it had only been flavored with turmeric and had absolutely no spicy kick; it was Indian food for the American who thinks mild Indian food is too spicy. Even with two chutneys the frankie tasted completely bland. I was unmotivated to finish it, and having suffered through the second half for lunch today, I felt compelled to warn others. The only positive was the«sambhar.» It did not look or taste like any other sambhar I’ve had– it was more like daal or red lentil soup– but it was good, by far the shining star of the meal. If you want a dosa or uttapam, check out Thiru’s cart in Washington Square Park, and if you want a frankie, head to Nizami rolls. By all means avoid the Dosateria unless you’re one of those people who feels all Indian food is too spicy; if that is the case, the Dosateria is definitely for you.

If you are looking for real South Indian food then go to a South Indian restaurant not a grocery store. The food here is slightly tasty and can pass for a good lunch option.

I was super excited 1. that an cool indo place had opened in Whole Foods and 2. that is from the owners of Spice, which is an amaaazing Indian restaurant in philly. Disappointed. The food is super americanized, so its really bland, not the usual tasty indian food with indian spices. We got the chicken kati roll– also really bland, and the dosa looked awesome, but didnt taste so great. The potatoes in a dosa are usually bland and plain anyways, so that was normal and pretty good, but the sambar(the soup that is served with dosas), looks like a cold lentil soup with some frozen veggies thrown in. Sambar is usually a spicy lentil and vegetable soup that just wakes you up on a cold day and makes you all warm and tingly on the inside. Negative on the warm and tingly feelings. Oh well.

Two nights ago, I ventured into the Tribeca Whole Foods after a long day at work. Starving, I decided to give Dosateria a try. The experience was amazing! I ordered the Bollywood Chicken Dosa, and it was definitely mouthwatering. The staff were friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu. Unlike other Whole Foods food that sometimes taste bland, the food at Dosateria has rich and complex flavors. I hope they will open one in my neighborhood Whole Foods on UWS!

I usually don’t go out of my way to find Indian cuisine, but I will go out of my way to come back to this little gem found in the Tribeca Whole Foods. It fulfilled the need for a relaxed, clean, casual, comfortable, welcoming, and DELICIOUS dining. I got to try the Bollywood Chicken Dosa and Shrimp Biryani Bowl(plus generous tastings of multiple Lassi drinks and items on the menu which were all good) Perfect to grab on the go or to sit for a few minutes to eat and also appreciate the impeccable service of the friendliest and well-run staff. I wanted to leave a tip! I love this place!

After a few weeks of walking by the Dosateria counter in my favorite Whole foods store, I decided to give it a try. I’m really glad i did… This dosa was so good. I tried the Bollywood chicken meatball dosa, it had avocados and came with a dipping avocado chutney sauce. I love the twist they’ve added to a dosa meal, typical Dosa’s are pretty boring to me but I really enjoyed this one. I did’nt like the Lassis here so you’re better off saving your money. It’s so hard to get a good lassi outside of India. The price is a bit steep at $ 11, So I wouldn’t come here for lunch too often but I would definitely come back. It’s the best Dosa I’ve ever had.
