Fun little place in Harrisonburg. Chai latte should have been stirred more — or maybe it just separates very quickly. Shared a pecan cinnamon roll, which was pretty tasty, though it would have been nice to have some gluten-free options. Otherwise a very cozy place, would try more of their drinks in the future!

Such a cute place! I love the location. The employees were extremely helpful. I always have a tough time deciding what to get. But they helped me decide and I’m hoping to come back to get the food(which I’ve heard is really good). I really enjoy this place, can’t wait to be back!

I am from northern va, I traveled down here with a couple friends. The espresso shot I got was amazing, along with the sparkling water. The shot had a great balance of acidic and bitterness. The machine had to be dialed in regularly. I give this place a solid 5 stars.

Usually a big fan of the coffee in-house, but I bought a bag of coffee last week and didn’t see until I got back home(an hour+ drive) that it was roasted 3 weeks ago. :( It’s one thing to intentionally age beans for in-house espresso pulling, but when retail coffee is priced at $ 28 per pound, I expect at the very least to be getting fresh beans. Next time I’ll definitely be asking about roast freshness…

This is probably my favorite place in Harrisonburg. The dirty chai is SO good not too sweet, not too spicy. They have really good pastries too. A little pricey, but delicious. The vanilla bourbon latte was my favorite thing here. I also really enjoy the regular coffee(a lot roasted by Red Rooster, which is delicious, high quality, local, fair trade and organic) I love the brick and atmosphere of the outdoor seating. The baristas were always really nice and personable, and there is a punch card reward system so after buying a certain number of coffees, you get one free! This is some of the best coffee in the area. Another plus: you can’t even smell the dog food wafting through the air! A nice lil sanctuary. And you’re so close to Pale Fire Brewing co. if coffee just isn’t doing it for you and you need a little something else.

A real nice third-wave coffee joint with an extensive list of single-origins. Just got a simple pour-over, which could have been a touch stronger, but it was still nicely made with friendly service. Definitely will be returning as often as I can.

Could be 5 stars. My latté was not hot enough, but otherwise pretty good. Delicious food options too! Respectfull attempt at latté art.

Black Sheep is someone’s vision and dream from the setting, to the cylindrical glass of water served with espresso, to the arcade game to the glorious baked goods(they are glorious– try the breakfast sandwich) to the outdoor seating with a view of crumbling industrial Harrisonburg. This meticulous attention could be put to use on their espresso based drinks and preparation. I travel to Harrisonburg often and have been to Black Sheep the last 4 times. Each time either my shot was bitter/way too strong, the milk was spoiled or over-steamed in my cappuccino, or my americano was weak. After all these tries, I can’t see it coming down to anything but barista standards or training. Some focus here would improve the core of the business and clearly make Black Sheep a landmark specialty coffee venue.

Located in the ICE house on Bruce St downtown. The seating is limited and the tables are tiny so this is a great place to sit with a friend over a drink but not ideal to try and do work at. The menu is mostly coffee with few non-coffee alternatives but they do have a selection of teas, hot chocolate, and other cold beverages. They also have a decent selection of baked goods and food items. Black sheep isn’t my favorite because how much I like a coffee shop is dependent greatly on the space/ambiance and it just feels small without a lot of space in between tables. It is hard to have a conversation without overhearing other conversations which means people are probably overhearing yours :) I should add that I don’t drink coffee or tea so I can’t comment on those but the hot chocolate is good. I’ve tried the rose lemonade(?) but I wasn’t a fan.

A cute little coffee shop with friendly staff. Didn’t like that the girl taking money served the coffee by placing her hand over the rim so her fingers touched the rim where my lips will touch. Big time no no. The owner served by holding the cup around the middle which means whatever is on his fingers will not touch my lips. Training is needed.

A fun, quirky spot to partake in coffee. The place really appeals to the hipster inside of me. The coffee is awesome, and the pastries are yummy. They only reason I did not give 5 stars is that the portion sizes are Europeanally small, and I am an American. The prices are also a little higher than average. Good coffee is surely worth a few extra nickels though. and it’s always nice to have a decent alternative to Starbucks.

I thought the coffee was really good. I think the coffee is way better than Greenberry’s. Although for good coffee they aren’t bad either. I had a basic cup of coffee. Some coffee has a very rotten, moldy or burn taste which can sometimes mean it was brewed incorrectly or its a commercial coffee. I would say that Black Sheep knows how to brew a good cup of coffee.

Great variety and unique setting. I enjoyed a vanilla bean tea and also tried some of the iced chai tea latte.

A lovely new addition to downtown, Black Sheep offers a very straight forward, coffee/tea-focused venue. Local roasted coffee is way stronger than I am accustomed, and I am still finding my taste as far as that goes. Their ultimate pleasure? The maple oat scones. You have to try one… Or two. Delicious.

First of all I drink straight espresso every day. I have a Mazzer mini, a La Pavoni, and an Expobar Office lever. I buy coffee from Counter Couture, Verve, Sightglass etc… This place was cool. Fairly industrially styled and had a nice feel. They have a lot of pour over options, a few baked goods, and espresso. I got a cinnamon roll and a macchiato. The cinnamon roll was good, the macchiato had no art but rather a pile of course foam on top, and tasted like the coffee was burnt. I did not try a pour over, hopefully those are better than the espresso. Had the espresso been better it would have easily been a five star.

This is a new Coffee shop that I found from the Unilocal app when driving through the area. The shop itself gets a 5 star for the cool factor and really comfortable and warming while being in a large open loft type space. The coffee however was not so great. I’m not sure if it is because it has just opened and they are trying to fine tune their machines or the coffee blends but I wouldn’t go out of my way for this twice. I ordered an espresso extra short and the young woman looked at me like I ordered something that she never heard of. A rather rude gentleman behind the counter basically barked just stop it when it’s half way done. He had this certain air about himself that he was far to important to be bothered to walk 10 feet to show her how to make what the customer ordered. He never looked at me or asked about how I heard about the shop or engage in any type of customer service. I found this odd as this was open less than a week and I was the only person in the shop on a Saturday morning. I’m guessing they are not focusing on the coffee and just the coffee shop experience. Oh well.

I only drink vanilla lattes. My favorite are the ones that I make at home, but being in college I don’t have the luxury of using an espresso machine. I recently heard about this place from a friend and thought I would give it a shot. Being a graduations senior from JMU I have only drank Starbucks the past 4 years while at school. While I feel that this place has a good ‘vibe’ for college students I don’t think it will last long. My first problem is the hours. 7am to 7pm is not the best hours. My friend and I like to get coffee at 6am before one of our classes and we obviously can’t go here because they aren’t open. Also, a lot of college students like coffee well past 7pm. Secondly, two vanilla lattes cost me $ 11 and some cents! I’m all for paying high prices to get what I want, but I didn’t think the quality was worth the price. When I think of a coffee place in a COLLEGE town I don’t think of $ 5+ lattes. Based off location and price I really don’t see this place doing all that well.

I turned on my coffee sonar(a.k.a. the Unilocal app) in search of an authentic pour over spot in Harrisonburg, VA. The wife and I had to travel up that way unexpectedly for unfortunate reasons. We both awoke in need of coffee, but the continental hotel breakfast brew wasn’t going to cut it. So off we went! This hidden gym is adjacent to the JMU campus, and is likely frequented by students. It’s clearly a newer spot in town and is in a still developing center that comes off as industrial; looking very much like a hardhat area. There was only one other patron inside when we entered, but don’t be fooled. Your GPS has not misled you. Park the car and walk into the darkness. You will not be disappointed. Over the meadow and through the woods… no wait, I mean, over the gravel and through the semi-paved tunnel-like structure you’ll find Black Sheep. Small, quaint, and unique, this little coffee shop boasts a broad pour over menu. Various specialty coffees are, of course, also available. There is limited seating around some of the smallest tables I’ve ever seen. Somehow, the tiny tables are a part of the appeal. There is also a small bar area, an arcade game, and a communal«doctor up your java» table for those of you in need of cream, sugar and such. They offer a few pastries for purchase as well. The staff was incredibly friendly. At one point I tasted my wife’s latte and made a face. My face had nothing to do with the latte, it was just bad timing as I reacted to something she remarked in conversation. The barista behind the counter took this to mean that I thought the coffee was bad and immediately offered to make it right. I thought her offer to right any wrong was an incredible gesture, and showed that they really cared about the customer experience. I had to explain that I thought the coffee was perfect and reassure her that my facial expression was not at all indicative of her work. In fact, my pour over was one of the best I’d ever encountered. Unfortunately, they do not use counter culture beans, but the coffee was great nonetheless. I highly recommend this place to coffee lovers in the area. I wish I were closer to visit more often myself. I hope business takes off for them. I’m sure once the construction around the immediate area wraps and word spreads, they will be a happening hangout.

Excellent pour over coffee, wide selection of coffee origins. Espresso is really good too
