Decent place with great Chinese food. The Chinese food here are commonly Jiangnan taste(Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province and Shanghai) and suitable for the people who don’t like spicy foods.

Went for dinner on a Friday night. Got spring roll appetizer, shrimp lo mein, and a chicken dish with veggies in a brown ginger sauce(forgot the name). Lo mein was great — a decent amount of shrimp. Spring rolls were good, clearly fried though(a tiny bit too greasy). Chicken dish was good although my boyfriend thought it was bland. Prices were very reasonable and service was attentive and friendly.

One of the better asian restaurants in chapel hill, for sure. I used to go to red lotus a LOT when I lived in the area, but since I’ve moved to raleigh, it’s a special treat when we get to stop by here. First tip right off the bat: order from the Chinese menu!!! If you’re ordering the general tso’s or the kung pao, you’re already doing it wrong. Go ahead and buy that type of food at your cheaper Chinese takeout joint. because where red lotus shines is in the back pages of its menu, where the Chinese characters are accompanied by vague descriptions in English. Daunting? yes, but trust me, it’s worth it. My favorites are the shredded beef with peppers, water boiled spicy fish, and the pork belly. Ma po tofu is also a great dish. Service is always great, and I always leave here stuffed. Take home message: STICKWITHTHECHINESEMENU!

Really sad to say that after one decent visit(not outstanding), the second visit was a total disappointment. The food was extremely greasy, the service was quite slow, and the food was very poorly prepared. Even though the servers tried, they were not able to keep up with the demand. The kitchen also did not seem capable to keep up with the demand either. A lettuce wrap dish only came with 4 very small lettuce wraps(not looking too good either), which was definitely not enough to wrap all of the food in the dish. When we asked for extra, we were charged 50 cents per small piece of lettuce or $ 2 for 4. Kind of didn’t seem right or hospitable. The vegetables also tasted funny too, like they were rushed and not properly washed. My biggest compliant is the food seemed to rushed with no love and care when cooked, very greasy, and poorly presented. The taste was extremely underwhelming. They need to do it right or slow down the number of tables they seat, as it is not acceptable to compromise quality of preparation and deliver such a poor all around experience. I contemplated 1 star, but they are better than some Chinese restaurants in the area, but just not good enough to want to return any time quickly…

My friend and I were disappointed by our meal at Red Lotus. We had high expectations since Red Lotus seemed to be very busy on a Sunday afternoon. We ordered the Red Lotus Chicken Curry and the fried dumplings. The fried dumplings were average, but the Red Lotus Chicken Curry had very little flavor and spice. Although the curry had a coconut flavor base, it was still not particularly flavorful or tasty. To be honest, the rice wasn’t even particularly good. If you are in the mood for decent Chinese/Thai food, I would just recommend going to either Red Bowl Bistro(in University Mall) or Twisted Noodle, both of which are close by.

Since I go to Red Lotus religiously for the past couple of years, I think it is time I review this place. Although it is a very unassuming place located in the strip mall, its food is quite amazing on the Chinese Menu. If you like very clean and traditional southern Chinese food that is. If you are into American Chinese fusion, there are a couple things that would interest you on the American menu, but definitely don’t come here expecting spicy and numbing Szechuan food.(You got Gourmet Kingdom for that) Most of the food is light on flavor but extremely well prepared. I personally like their appetizer with cold veggies.(Malan Stirred with Baked Tofu) It’s fresh, different but tasty. It seems like a dish of green weed, but it will surprise you. First time I ever tasted it, it bought me back home to Southern China. On the entrée side, I like everything that have three ingredient in it(our nicknames for alot of dishes on the menu). For example: Tofu Skin with Potherb Mustard & Green Soy Bean, Shredded Pork with Hot Pepper & Baked Tofu Slices, and Stir-Fried Rice Cake with Shepherd’s Purse & Shredded Pork.(My favorite is the last one). Personally, I only come to Red lotus when I want something fresh and clean to eat, but still taste amazing. The only star I took off is for the Special Orders. I had 8 Treasure Duck, Braised Pig’s Knuckle in Brown Sauce, and Duck Three Way multiple time(carry out or dining in), they are all quite disappointing… They are tasty, but not really worth the value. Just order from the normal menu. The atmosphere is nice as well, very different from the other Chinese restaurants in town, could potentially be a date place. :) In conclusion, give this place a try and I bet it will surprise you.

Red lotus consists of good take out Chinese food, or even a nice place to dine in. It’s not the most spectacular Chinese I’ve eaten, but for a fast take out option I like this restaurant. The Chinese food isn’t too greasy which is a plus. I tried the moo shu chicken and the duck lo mein. Both were very tasty and large portions. I wish the lo mein had a bit more vegetables in it. The duck was good but needed to be crispier since I had a few pieces that were too chewy. You can’t go wrong with the moo shu chicken. It’s very flavorful and comes with a lot of chicken strips. The pancakes are not greasy either that come with it. Ask for extra sauce because you’ll need it!

Pretty nice asian restaurant. Nice environment and services. Nice food. We prefer the spicy boiled beef, if that is the correct name. But the eest of the dish is also good, especially some Shanghai cuisine.

Normally I try to avoid writing truly negative reviews as my mother told me, «if you have nothing good to say»… However, in this case, I want to make sure that you don’t choose this place thinking«huh, it has 3.5 stars, it must be at least decent». No, it isn’t. We got one entrée and a few Bogo rolls. The rolls were not good, as in, almost not edible. The fish is far from fresh and the seasonings were poor as well, wrapped poorly so they fall apart. There noodles were plain and boring. Skip this place.

Very unassuming for a strip mall joint! I was skeptical when my non-Asian friends told me about this place but after eating here at least a dozen times, I am a believer! I used to never get potstickers when I eat out but they were recommended to me and I’ve ordered it every single time since. Always get extra sauce. Try not to fill up on the fried wonton strips and duck sauce. Add chili oil to your duck sauce for extra flavor. While you’re at it, dip some of those strips into the potsticker sauce as well! I never leave without a ton of leftovers. I take all my Asian friends from out of town here when we want something more authentic than PF Changs and/or don’t want to deal with Franklin Street. They are really good about making substitutions here or whipping you up something that’s not on the menu. It’s easy to satisfy a big group because they have a bit of everything – traditional, Thai, Korean, American-Chinese, Vegan, Vegetarian. Definitely try something off the traditional Chinese menu! The sweet and sour Mandarin fish or squirrel fish as it’s known in some restaurants, always brings me back to my study abroad days in Shanghai! This place doesn’t leave you smelling like a Chinese restaurant(unlike Jade Palace or Gourmet kingdom). The darker mood lighting, tablecloths, and full bar make it an ideal date night restaurant without breaking the bank. Gets pretty crowded for lunch so you might want to go elsewhere if you’re looking to get in and out.

We walked into the restaurant and there were many tables of Chinese people eating Chinese food in this joint, which is a good sign the food is legit. Then we were greeted warmly and seated immediately. The food was super authentic(ordered off the Chinese menu) and flavored extremely well where it was not greasy or salty. We left feeling that it would be a nice addition if they were in Manhattan. We will be back again when we are in town next time!

Poor chinese restaurant, not authentic. The smoked fish we tried was really sour(kinda of went bad); other dishes were either too salty or flavorless. If you want westernized chinese food, this might be the place, but sorry, won’t come back as there are better options for authentic chinese food in the local area.

Great value for a quality meal. Red lotus serves good Chinese food at an affordable price. Dishes range from«American» Chinese food to more traditional. Service is great and it’s a locally owned operation. Would highly recommend it. Szechuan string beans with chicken are a personal favorite.

I only order off the Chinese menu. Its a bit pricey I think for the quality, but there aren’t that many authentic Chinese places in Chapel Hill, so I come here quite often. Most«authentic» Chinese places all cater to the Sichuan or Szechuan taste, so I like that this place has Chinese dishes that deviate from that. But again its not super great quality(the food itself), so the price is a little too high.

We ate here for lunch. Food was ok for the price. The problem I had was that I ordered two appetizers listed on the menu at a price of $ 3.50/each. When the bill came, it showed $ 4.00 for each appetizer. I brought the discrepancy to the server’s attention. He responded that he would tell the owner, but he did not have the cashier change the bill. To me this is simply dishonest business practice. I could have argued and not paid the bill, but I figured I’d write this review instead. It reminded me of dining in Italy where there are two menus(one for ordering and one for after the bill comes).

Bad, bad, and bad. I was not holding any expectation on this run of red lotus but I did not expect that poor quality of food. we had green beans which is totally unedible because it is over cooked. And Ma Po Tofu is not spicy, spicy fish cannot find fish in it and everything is just too american style. I understood that they want to attract more americans to come and eat but this is not how it works.

Probably the best Asian lunch I’ve had in Raleigh since I’ve been here for work. And trust me, we try a lot of Asian restaurants. For $ 7, we got soup/egg roll, rice, and a substantial portion for our meal. They can make every dish with fried or fresh tofu, and I love that! I had the black bean sauce with fresh tofu and brown rice along with a veggie egg roll. I was a little under the weather that day, but the meal was flavorful and I enjoyed all of the flavors from the dish. It had Stir-fried Broccoli, Carrots, Green Bean, Mushroom and Onion in Spicy Black Bean Sauce & was so filling and delicious. Came again and what I ordered was much better/more flavorful than the black bean sauce. You can basically ask for any set of vegetables with the different types of sauces, and that’s fantastic. I got the Buddha’s delight choice of veggies with the kung pao sauce with peanuts and it was fantastic! The restaurant was packed during lunch, and our service was fantastic. The waiter checked up on us repeatedly to make sure everything was tasteful and how we ordered it. I really enjoyed the meal and my team will most definitely be coming again soon. They claim they do not use any MSG in their food and everything tastes really fresh when it comes out — the veggies and the sauce bases. This is the difference from Red Lotus to all of the other restaurants we’ve been to in the Raleigh/Durham area.

This place is probably one of the better Asian places in the area that I’ve tried… but this isn’t saying much at all. I ordered a couple things with a friends — some chicken, fish, and veggie dishes. The consistent problem I’ve had was the inconsistent use of salt. Some things were really salty and some things had no flavor at all. It was also rather greasy. And is fried wonton strips a thing here in NC? I’ve never had that served to me in my life in all of the probably hundreds of Chinese places I’ve been to in California. I feel like this place might be catering to the crowds expectations of Chinese Americanized Chinese food… like more Chinese versions of Americanized Chinese foods. It had me confused if they just have mediocre/decent Chinese food.

**Lunch Menu** Nice little independent Chinese place that serves food similar in style and on a par quality-wise with PF Chang’s. The price is right at lunch – protein and rice served with your choice of eggroll or soup and a drink for $ 8. I’m partial to the Zesty Orange Chicken. Even the spicy dishes aren’t too hot, though you can add some of their great spicy mustard to anything if you want to blow the top of your head off. Their eggrolls are nicely crisp too, and the duck sauce has a nice flavor and isn’t too sticky-sweet. They bring a bowl of wontons and duck sauce to the table when you arrive. Friendly servers and it’s usually pretty quick. I’ve only been once at dinner and that was a while ago. I do remember the menu was much more extensive and expensive, though they had some good beer prices at the bar. Definitely a worthwhile lunch spot to get an Americanized Chinese fix though.
