One of the only Chinese restaurants with takeout in the area, so we decided to try it out. The beef lomein was flavorless and the noodles were overcooked. I couldn’t taste any crab in the crab rangoons. Considering the price and taste… I won’t be ordering from there again

Typical Americanized take out. And a bit pricy at that. Many better places in the area

I love the lobster here. It is the best food I’ve ever had in Chapel Hill/Carrboro area(among Chinese restaurant). It’s very authentic!

I am stuck between giving it 2 or 3 stars. The food is OK, not the worst Chinese in Chapel Hill, but also not as good as I’ve had in other places(for«American Chinese food»). I find the food pricey for what you are getting. The wonton soup is tasteless. I do like the egg rolls and hunan beef. I find the delivery minimum($ 15) plus delivery fee a bit ridiculous. The lo mein is decent, but lacking flavor. Basically, the food here is hit or miss, but hits the spot when I am in search of Chinese close to my apartment.

I’ve had take out from here a few times and its been edible(which is why I give it 2 stars). And I only do take out from there because its close to my apartment and only when I don’t have any other options. I got crab rangoons and they were so burnt it was almost black. That really upset me because there should be a standard even if you aren’t a 5 star restaurant. If your food is so burnt its black, why would you serve it? Unless you’re blind… in which case you should not be working in a restaurant. That annoyed me a lot. But everything else is pretty«just whatever.» If you’re craving bad Chinese food, it does its job.

It does the job if you’re looking for decent Chinese food in Chapel Hill. Our waitress was nice. Kung pao chicken was good, and Singapore rice noodles were delicious. Dishes are on the pricey side.

The Sizzling Steak was described as «Choice cubes of tender steak, sauteed with snow peas, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, fresh Chinese cabbage and oyster sauce.» What I received was a slab of grizzly, tough, thin sliced chuck on top of mixed veggies(no water chestnuts or bamboo shoots) in unflavored broth. No sign of oyster sauce. Yuck.

Nothing here is great. But everything here is better than at other Chinese restaurants in Chapel Hill. That’s especially true of the vegetable fried rice — a nice comfort dish not laden in grease as it is on Franklin Street at Asia Café(shudder). The string bean duck is another nice option.

It’s been 4MONTHS since I’ve had good Asian food! I’m starting to feel like a crack addict looking for my next fix. Okay, I might be exaggerating, but it’s been a serious struggle since I moved here to North Carolina. This place is not good to say the least. And the price? It’s more expensive than places in San Francisco(where the cost of living is ridic, like 3x my rent I pay here). And at least in San Francisco, I can almost guarantee any place will be better than my cooking. I can literally make food tastier than this place — and I’m only barely decent in the kitchen. So this is a major red flag. Anyway, I came here for lunch out of sheer desperation. I ordered some sort of Chicken dish. I really can’t even remember what it was because it just wasn’t memorable. It came with soup, which had no flavor. It was like thickened water with some pieces of tofu and veggies. Not impressed. They also gave me some fried wonton strips. Is that a thing? I’ve never had that before. It was greasy and unflavored — but I can’t really complains since it’s free. And I won’t go into details, but it did not leave me feeling very… well. And I have an iron stomach(haven’t thrown up since 10 years old!) If this is your only option… just sip on a package of soy sauce. My plans during my next break is learning how to make my own Chinese food, because I don’t think I can survive with the terrible food scene here(I’ve lost 6 lbs in 4 months). Even as desperate as I am for any Asian flavors, I won’t be eating here.

I used to like this place, but the prices keep going up while the quality goes down. Needless to say, we won’t be going back.

On my recent trip back to Charlotte… Yes, we drove 2 hours up north to check it out. Word in the restaurant business was that there was an authentic chef that recently set up shop in Chapel Hill at this restaurant. So my parents convinced me(of course not me driving) to come up and scope this place out to make sure it wasn’t some rumor. And the verdict: it isn’t. Now, saying that I’m sure you wonder: why such a low score then? I’ll be sure to answer that burning question. Out of all the restaurants out there I’m absolutely positive that Chinese restaurants have the hardest time with keeping up with the right taste that will be liked and be competitive along other restaurants. I mean look at the history of Chinese food and I’m sure you question yourself, why is it so cheap? «Hey! So if you’re saying its so good, why the low/mediocre score?» That’s because people are not ordering the correct dishes. So, what should you order? Well, here’s what I ordered: 1. Stir Fried Cantonese Style Lobster with scallion and ginger. 2. Beef Stew Hot Pot 3. Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice 4. Eggplant with Salty fish chicken Hot Pot(I believe we added more from just the Eggplant Hot Pot) 5. Stir Fried Garlic Chinese Broccoli 6. Stir Fried Garlic Shanghai Cabbage(usually mistaken for baby bok choy) 7. Salt and Pepper Pork Chops If you truly want Chinese. Try these dishes out. Ask for the Chinese menu and order off of there. What did I think? I thought all the dishes were great. None of the dishes had any MSG, which is amazing. The only small thing that stood out to me was that the salt and pepper pork chops weren’t spicy. That dish calls for some heat, and without that it lacked the fun and exciting factor for me. Still all in all, I hope people in Chapel Hill/Triangle area appreciate what they have… Because, honestly I thought it was worth the 2 hour trip. I believe if they’re not loved here, Chinese people living in Charlotte would love to have an good and authentic Chinese food restaurant with this chef. I know I would.

Ordered take out since the delivery service gets poor reviews. After ordering, it took about 15 minutes to get my food. While waiting, I noticed that no one seems to eat in the restaurant but most of their business seems to be take out(or delivery). Tried their salt & pepper deep fried chicken wings(bland), Cantonese chicken(not as good as others note), tofu w/vegetables(okay), and double cooked pork(best of what we tried. Overall, this is just an average Chinese restaurant… disappointing.

My favorite dish is the Cantonese Chicken Chow-Mein(Yum!), but I’ve had a number of items from the menu. All have been great. This is my go-to restaurant as far as Chinese takeout/delivery in Chapel Hill/Carrboro is concerned. My only warning is to double check the price when ordering over the phone. Their website offers online ordering, and I’ve noticed a few times that the total given over the phone is $ 3-$ 4 higher than the online price. They’re happy to give you a «discount» if you point out the error.

On the plus side, they deliver. On the downside, it took almost two hours to arrive and the food was cold when it got here. The food itself was so-so; not bad, but not particularly good either, and pretty expensive. A half order of low-mein, a full sized entry, a single spring roll and a small cup of soup came to $ 30. For that money we got a small bit of low-mein that was almost entirely noodles, an inedible bowl of soup, and an ok entry. Its certainly not worth the wait or the money.

The best Chinese takeout in Chapel Hill in my opinion! I’ve had a variety of their Americanized chinese food and it’s all pretty great! Especially general tso and hibachi chicken. They also serve this stuff at Café McColl in the Kenan-Flagler Business School of UNC, and that’s always been good. Don’t kid yourself, though — this place is definitely for take out chinese. The only advice I’ll give is: 1) watch out for the fried rice, it’s REALLY hit or miss. one time I got it, it was the best ever, and I excitedly got it a few times after and it literally smelled like dry dog food. exactly. 2) sometimes their beef is a little weird, I would stick to chicken which they do well. 3) try to go for things on the menu that have a little pepper beside it, because the other stuff is mild… like, super mild, not very flavorful. just my opinion

Hunam is one of those little restaurants that you drive past and never think about. There is a reason for that. I wanted to like this place. I really did. It came recommended by somebody that knows good food. It has a huge menu with wonderful selections like curry noodles, happy family, and my selection for the night Mongolian Lamb. The food was good, but not great. If I were judging strictly on food quality I would give it 3.5 stars. But there were too many other things wrong to give it that kind of rating. We saw our waitress twice. Once to take our order and again for the check. We ordered soda. We got warm cans of soda with a glass of ice. Forget refills, we didn’t see our waitress during the meal remember. Our orders came out one at a time. the first one a full five minutes before the second one and close to 10 minutes before the last one. The bill was way overpriced for what it was. It was white tablecloth prices with take out service. Very poor customer service.

My wife and I were looking for a pretty standard, American style Chinese joint when we decided to try Hunam. While it may not be super-authentic high-cuisine, it’s certainly not the same basic deep fried and then coated in corn-starched oil you get from the menu-on-the-wall takeout joints. I got the Szechuan chicken and she got the Orange chicken, which we shared, and both were quite tasty. We had a friend with us who got the sweet and sour chicken, which he stated was also good. So, there it is, 3 of the most common dishes, and all passed muster quite easily. Next time around, and there definitely will be a next time, we’ll probably get a little more adventurous. If you’re looking for higher quality than the average super-American Chinese joint, check it out, it’s not super authentic, but it’s better than most places.

Man, I should have known this was going to be bad when I walked inside and saw the yellow-painted-This-Used-To-Be-A-Mexican-Restaurant walls. The place was mostly deserted at dinner, and we found out for good reason: the food here is total balls. We ordered two things: The General(That’s Tso to you), and Schezuan Pork. They came out exactly the same in every way, from appearance, to consistency, to flavor. I really wasn’t expecting the pork dish to be deep fried and lukewarm(the Tso’s was, too), but that might be my own ignorance blaring. They both were pretty dang sweet, no spice to be had, and boy, they were gross after the first few bites. The rice was sad and old, like my great-uncle Danny. Much like Danny, the rice just sat around, being dry, gummy, and unlikeable. So, in a town with Gourmet Kingdom and Jade Whatever-it’s-called just down the street, there’s really no reason to eat here, even if you’re doing your laundry! Save your appetite while yer duds are spinning and go elsewhere.
