They have a jukebox full of true classics, and random old country, and for some reason, Cher’s modern day hits. Don’t worry about the menu, the bartender will tell you most of what’s on there is not gonna happen. You don’t need that menu anyway cause the one and only item you should think about here is scallop related. Scallops. For 17 dollars you can have you a dozen scallops your way, with fries. I have to say, even when deep fried, the scallops here are perfectly cooked. Simple, but perfectly cooked. So that’s the move. If you’re not into scallops, I’d say your second best bet is a bag of cheez doodles, which, by the way, we learned that the doodle can be set on fire to use as flares… in case of emergency. «So maybe you should keep some in the car,» our bartender, she mused as she lit the puff like a wick. When we lived in Cape May, some years back, we’d head to Mayer’s every now and again. Very cheap beer is a draw, you know. Especially this was true for us during the off season, during the cold loooonely Winter. Then the place would be full of scallop fishermen. We’ve had some colorful times. We stopped in last weekend for some rainy day nostalgia. My absolute favorite thing about Mayer’s, besides the cheap beer and fried scallops, and the jukebox, is that one night I heard some real old salt, a genuine salty ol’ seadog, yell, «Gaaaarrrrrrr!!!» with annoyance. Gaaaarrrr without sarcasm! Pirate talk without a shred of irony… These are delightful moments to be relished, no doubt about it.

Old school bar, great place for cold beer good service and scallops. This is a classic old school shore bar without the tourist from Cape May. Good bar food, good service, cold beer and a loud juke box that’s it… Don’t expect a fancy interior but do expect some of the best scallops prepared on the Jersey Shore. You can also walk across the street to The Miss Chris in Cape May for fishing tours and you local to South Shore Marina, Lucky Bones and the Lobster House.

This is called Mayer’s tavern in cape may, NJ. It says on Unilocal that it is closed. On 10÷2÷10 it was open for lunch. Chowder was good. Scallops are the only reason to come here. Great scallops! Atmosphere is a dumpy bar.
