Good alternative to Benihanas. About the same price & quality, but a whole lot less crowded.

My husband and I decided to treat our four children to Teppanyaki as a birthday dinner for our nine year old. We live closer to the Vancouver location, but there was a big storm and the Vancouver restaurant wasn’t answering their phone due to a power outtage. I called the Beaverton location and spoke to who I believe was the owner. He was super helpful and contacted the Vancouver location by cell phone to see if they were able to seat people. He called me back to let me know that the Vancouver site was unable to serve and expressed an apology. We decided to go ahead and drive out to Beaverton so he reserved a place for us. He also ended up being our chef. He was a lot of fun and the food was really good. We all enjoyed the experience, meal and generous portions. We will definitely return the next time we have a hankering for sushi and teppanyaki.

No Japanese greeting = Not authentic I had a sushi craving(which happens about once a week =X) and I wanted to try a new venue within the ‘burbs. Fuji’s Grill came up on my Unilocal search and I thought it would be good to check out since it’s nearby. Consider Fuji’s like a grungy-mom-and-pop version of Benihana’s. It’s Americanized and so therefore you have some of your run-of-the-mill nigiri, frou frou sushi rolls, cooked special rolls, and the typical«grill table» you’d see at Benihana. [décor] Seems a bit old and run down. Fake large plants. Green pastel-like walls from the 80s. Some of the walls are made of wood. Needs an update. But it’s sanitary. [devour] I came in during their Mon-Thurs 25% off deal during a late lunch hour. These prices reflect the 25% off price.( ) *SMOKEDSALMONNIGIRI($ 3.35 for 2 pieces; ***1STAR***) — the fish was fresh, but unfortunately the cut of the smoked salmon was mutilated. I don’t think the knife that was used was sharpened. In addition, like Saburo’s in the Sellwood District, they cut a huge piece of fish, which I didn’t think was necessary. Please don’t try to lure me with the huge slice of fish. No skills here at all. In addition, the sushi rice was HOT. Last time I recall, sushi rice is to be room temperature. As I picked up the nigiri with my chopstick, the whole thing fell apart. NOBUENO. *FUJI’S SPECIAL($ 6.70; ***2STARS***) — this dish was recommended by many on Unilocal.Made with baked scallops, shrimp, crab, diced pieces of avocado and tobiko(caviar) — flavors were so-so. I think people love it because it was doused in mayo and hot sauce. It was kinda sad that they used TOOMUCHRICE in the roll that everything else was minute. I felt I was paying more for the rice, which was«meh» to begin with. *CATERPILLARROLL($ 5.95; ***2STARS***) — I love avocados and unagi. So it was a no brainer I ordered this. It also came with tobiko. Again same complaints as the Fuji’s Special — TOOMUCHRICE. The roll was carelessly made. I wish more care was taken into constructing the dish. No wonder it came out within 5 minutes. FYI = –Parking lot available but be cautious of narrow lanes –Mon thru Thurs some rolls are 25% off(probably the ONLY good deal you’d find here) –Beer, sake and wine available –They place their soy sauce in an old glass Coca Cola bottle. Not sure how sanitary that was…( ) –Only Asian worker was my waiter –Service: my waiter was rushing me to order(not cool) and throughout my dining there, the sushi«pseudo-chef» came to check up on me to see if my food was okay… perhaps because there was too much rice and the fish wasn’t cut right… =X and lastly, my waiter gave me my bill during the middle of my meal… please wait for me to request it(just sayin’ it was RUDE) If you’re not looking for an authentic place, by all means check this place out. But I don’t think I would be coming back here after my experience. Unilocal 2013100+ Reviews Challenge(going for 200!) — Review #182

If you’re coming in for a full meal, this is dinner with an experience. The chefs come out and cook on a grill right in front of you, and serve it to you hot and fresh. They’re charismatic and talented with multiple tricks up their sleeves; I won’t spoil it, but you’ll be sure to have a grin on your face by the end of it! You can also come in just for sushi and sit at smaller tables. My dad and I come here often when he’s on business(where he often gets angry at me for eating all the juicy deep-fried ones). It’s expensive, but you literally can’t go wrong with what ever you order. Sure to satisfy.

There is a reason why this place was near empty, and Benihaha was full. Server was nice and friendly, but under staffed. The grill master was adequate at best. Tenderloin was NOT how it name suggested… Sushi rolls thrown together and messy. Manager comment to our complaints was a bit of sympathy, not much more.

3.5 Back to Fuji’s with the whole family in tow for dinner on a Friday night. It was not crowded yet we had to wait a while for a table. We were seated with another family of four who had been waiting for a half an hour to order. Another group came in and they actually got started with their meal first. When our guy took our table’s orders he asked my party first then the other family… really I think everybody got over this but it does speak to a certain level of confusion or lack of organization. We saw a couple servers and a couple cooks… I think everyone helps everybody. This IMHO is confusing to customers who dont know who is helping them. Once we got going with our grilling show everything was good. Two of us had combinations($ 20.95 shrimp and chicken, scallops and chicken), Princess had kid’s chicken $ 7.95 and I had $ 17.95 salmon. The proteins were all nicely cooked, the veggies and noodles were yummy. The adults’ meals were preceeded by a small iceberg salad with a gingery dressing. Princess ate her miso($ 1.50) Kids meals don’t come with salad. So my kid polished off half of mine. She also ate most of my perfectly cooked salmon. Next time she’s getting her own salmon. This was a pretty good experience. Our tepanyaki guy was fun(he made us an onion volcano and set it alight which scared the heck out of my ten year old). We had a nice meal, we used our coupon($ 10 off two combos, from that cooupon flier that comes in the mail), and everyone was pretty happy. If the kids menu had salmon on it for more adventurous kids the place would have earned a four I think. It was a little expensive to go often but cool for a sometimes thing.

I want to like this place, I really do, but what a very odd atmosphere. I’m not sure I have ever eaten in a tepanyaki place that was so dead! Having said that… the hubs and I really enjoyed the food. The sushi I had was a very unique combination and tastest very fresh. The service was very good — friendly, but not too pushy in spite of the fact that there was only one table occupied(ours). The tepanyaki was the usual fair — nothing stands out but again, just as tasty and Benihana I thought. We would go back, but perhaps on the weekend when it’s busier… I’d be willing to re-evaluate this if the vibe was better the next time we went.

I had several nigiri at this place, they were all quite good and the portion sizes were larger than expected. It’s a little spendy for the quality, but everything was very tasty and I would definitely come back again.

Hey when we want to go to a place that cooks in front of you AND serves sushi we come here. It’s fun, clean, good, and reasonably priced. The guy who does cooking is funny and very kind. It’s a reworked sports bar, but don’t let that sway you — the food and service are great!

I’ve been to Fuji’s several times. It’s an overpriced teppanyaki and sushi restaurant. It’s probably a sign when the place is never busy at dinner time on weekends or weekdays. The sushi is good but overpriced. I ordered seaweed salad because I’d had it once before there and it was really good. This time there was very little seaweed and it was put over cucumbers to replace the volume. I went with other people that got the teppanyaki and they said it wasn’t that great. Don’t expect to be entertained and no shrimp appetizer or free fried rice like other grills. I’ve always liked green tea at Japanese restaurants because it’s usually good quality but they just give you a tasteless tea bag. Then they walk by and ask you if you want more tea. Say«yes» and they pour water into your cup expecting you to use the same tea bag all night. This happened to us so often it became an inside joke. If I wanted that kind of tea, I would go to Shari’s. Note to owners — you might think you are saving money by scrimping on tea quality but you’ll lose money in the long run.

So. this is my alternative when I can’t get into Benihana’s or don’t wan’t to drive that far. I get some great service & food here. I don’t like the ginger sauce here as much as I do at Benihana’s but love love coming in here if I want the«grill experience» Have only been a couple of times but enjoy and like going when I want a nice sit down dinner. I always sit at the grill, you have the option to sit at a table but where’s the fun in that? I always get a few adult beverages too, no harm in that.

The grill side of this place reminds me of Benihana. But I haven’t tried it and I can’t give my opinion on that. However, the sushi is another story. In terms of nigiri the meat was OK quality and they use way too much rice. As for rolls, they are not great either — the spicy tuna roll was the worst I had so far. For a sushi restaurant this is pretty bad. If you are driving nearby and crave for some sushi, skip this place.

Not the best sushi I’ve had but it does the trick when I crave for sushi. Definitely recommended if you’re near and don’t feel like driving too far. Try the Godzilla roll!

So they have teppan style food AND sushi. It’s beyond delicious. I recommend going for lunch, because it’s super cheap. Sushi is 50% off on week days, and otherwise I’d say it’s pretty expensive(probably because I’m used to Toshi’s prices). I LOVED the Godzilla roll. It’s damn good. But if you come here, you need to order the tenderloin. You get salad, noodles, veggies and awesome, tender meat. It is totally cheap at lunch, too. The interior is nice, they usually play sports on the flat screen, and they obviously have loyal customers because they were joking with the owner.

I enjoy Benihana’s, but this place seems a little less crowded and just as good. Not to mention I’m almost positive it’s slightly less expensive. Actually came here on Valentine’s Day of this year and was hapily surprised with the great service and other friendly couples around our«grill» table. We started the night off with a Sushi appetizer… it seemed to be taking longer than it should to come out, but was overall pleased with the freshness and taste. We had the Rainbow roll and it was quite good $ 8.95 wasn’t a horrible price either. I then ordred the light dinner with the Calimari Steak… the chef cooking it called it «Spongebob» as it jiggled around on the grill. I like Calimari in general but the steak cut was a bit odd. Good, but odd. Do not take home leftovers of it however. If you re-heat it, it dies and has an awful texture and taste. Even ordering the«light» dinner I had more than enough rice, veggies, and protien in front of me. Plus it was only around $ 14! My date had the Salmon which I tried and was quite good as well. I would certainly suggest coming here!

It’s like a better quality Benihana. The cook who does the lemon and butter noodles with salmon is off the hook. I love that dish so much that I make my husband take me here every time we’re in Portland. The way he looks at me when I ask to go here would make you think I’d asked him to take me to Taco Bell. But he always ends up eating everything and making MMM sounds so I don’t know what is wrong with him. It is expensive(–1 star,) but not as expensive as Benihana. I like it very much and so does the baby, which is always a plus. The service is slow so don’t go here if you’re in a rush.

Not Beni Hanna’s! Have you been to a flee market and found a Rolex for ten bucks? A knock off right. This place is not all that good nor does it provide good service. The food was just normal food that can be gotten just about anywhere. The kids loved it because of the floor show. Don’t waste your time or money here. Go to Beni Hanna’s.

Mother-in-laws B-day and she likes Benihana. So I call up trying to get a reservation. Sorry they tell me all booked unless you would like to come in around 9:45pm. Forget that so I go to Unilocal and look up teppanyaki and Fuji’s comes up. Check out reviews and call and no problem all set. Five of us meet and have a great time. Prices are lower than the B place and the show was just as good. The waitress was giving me a hard time in a fun way the minute we walked in which I kept giving back to her and the food was very good. Maybe could use a bit more seasoning but for the price I had nothing to bitch about. I agree with one of the others the yakisoba noodles were nothing special but the fried rice that we ordered was great and worth the extra just for the show the cook will do. Fun atmosphere, only four tables, sushi was good and the most important part the mother-in-law had a great time. Got to keep the old bag happy…

Wow, I was surprised this place wasn’t on here. This is one of three of the Fuji’s chains, and that latest one I’ve tried. The other two are in Sherwood and Vancouver, respectively. So, I think this may actually be their newest one! Anyway, I went there on Saturday night — myself for sushi and the grill for my boy. I recognized the waitress from the other location and she’s nice, prompt and doesn’t let a entitled mother of a customer stir her one bit. We were seated promtly and had drinks in hand within minutes. They are one of two places that serves RC still(WHY!!!), but oh well. Anyway, they cook the food right in front of you(and you can’t miss the awesomeness of the towring onion ring of FLAMES while you’re at it) and the chef was quite entertaining. The noodles weren’t anything special — just cooked in soy sauce and served. The fried rice looked DELISH but alas, we hadn’t ordered it so we just watched it get made. I didn’t try any of the other things my boyfriend ordered(steak, shrimp) but he said they were good(but noted not as good as Benihana). That’s OK because I LOVE Fuji’s for the sushi(which Mon-Thurs is 25% most rolls). I get their Philly roll as I’ve never had another place make it better and their special roll — it’s called the Godzilla roll — unagi, cream cheese, sweet sauce DEEPFRIED) — heaven. I’ve tried their various other items and it’s all good ‘n’ tasty. It’s in an odd location which is why I guess there may be no reviews but this place is hecka good. Yes, I said hecka.
