Steak ‘n Shake

Was seated at 10:30 am with no breakfast menu, asked the waitress if it was still breakfast time, she said yeas and went to get our drinks but never brought the breakfast menu, had to get up and get it ourselves… out of 4 waitresses there, only 1 seemed to be waiting any tables

If I could I wouldn’t give them any stars whatsoever you staying there for like 5 minutes and no one says anything and then the manager takes somebody at the register who just walked in behind you so I had to leave and say goodbye to everyone these people are so rude so unprofessional but that’s even worse word right now I’m so hungry I don’t even want to think about any of this if it’s spelled correctly I’m sorry that’s how I feel today but everyone have a great day don’t go here

This was the moment. Does Steak ‘n Shake deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with Bern’s or the venerable but threatened Charley’s Steakhouse? I decided to find out! I picked the lowest rated Steak ‘n Shake I could find in the area to ensure nobody thought I was stacking the deck or bringing in a ringer!
I drove up looking for valet parking but only saw a drive through and a partially shaded parking lot. Plus one star! No mandatory valet parking!
As I walked in and saw a guy wearing ratty yet distinctively stained shorts leaving, it was my first clue the dress code was not mandatory jacket or dressy. Plus another star!
There was a bit of a crowd at the doorway since a few were ordering to go but I was still pleasantly greeted in mere seconds. I was directed to a nearby table that was remarkably clean!
Shanel, my server, smiled, introduced herself and offered me water while I perused the menu. When I started with a shake, she smiled again and said — «they are good!» It’s always great to get enthusiastic validation on the ordering selections at a fine restaurant. She really did a great job with service!
When I ordered the original double steak meal, I was disappointed Shanel didn’t ask how I wanted it prepared. Perhaps, I thought, everyone gets it medium rare? Soon, I discovered the meal came with bread, potatoes, steak, salad, and garnish all combined. How convenient!
The construction of this steak sandwich was truly an amazing feat. On top, sour pickles, the bite of onion, sweet ketchup, tart and zesty mustard, sandwiching two medium well «steaks» with «cheese». Below, was a complete salad including the crunch of green leaf lettuce, a slice of tomato and a bit of mayo. All together, this layered masterpiece was a taste sensation! I almost forgot it was medium well, probably for my culinary safety. Thank you for looking out for my health!
The fried potato’s on the other hand were a bit disappointing. They were apparently of the shoestring variety and well salted and crunchy but quickly losing their snap after sitting on the plate for only a few minutes. Eating the rest became a chore.
The shake was both a beautiful and delicious concoction. Half chocolate, half banana, split down the middle, with whipped cream and a perfect Maraschino cherry on top. As I slurped it, I realized I could switch between banana and chocolate at will, or get both in the same slurp. #ElFreakinYummo!
I was inspired to take a moment to reflect on the merits of the Maraschino cherry…
Did you know, the name originates from maraschino liqueur made with pickled Marasca cherries in Croatia? Whole cherries preserved in this delectable liqueur are the famous «maraschino cherries». They became so popular and the supply so sought after during the 19^th century, they were a delicacy only for royalty! And, I’m enjoying one at Steak ‘n Shake! I felt like royalty!
The clientele were a wonderful, diverse cross section of America. Older couples out on the town, teenagers spending their parents’ money, and working people looking for a proper meal.
I also discovered they have twice daily happy hour! Every day from 2−5pm and every night from 2−5am, all the drinks are half price! This includes the awesome shakes which are less than $ 2! Don’t miss out!
My overall verdict? 4 stars! The food service was on point, the food quite tasty, and except for the rapidly wilting fries, everything was awesome!

One look at the filthy floors in the grill area literally with food, and we left. Near the college but felt more like a thug vibe:(

I have very mixed feelings about this particular location. 2 different nights.
1^st night — 1 am service, fantastic waitress who was extremely funny and nice and made sure we were attended to
2^nd night — midnight service, waitress was extremely slow and often forgot little things we asked for such as napkins or straws
Steak and Shake’s food is always good, but service wise, this location is hit or miss.

Couldn’t resist sharing this Steak ‘n Shake best kept secret. The footlong chili cheese dog w/​fries is on the $ 4 menu! Surprisingly, they make an awesome dog, split & charred, as it should be. $ 3.99 gets you what you see in the pic. If you’re in the mood for some tasty & cheap, guilty-​pleasure grub, this is it. Unfortunately, the locations vary greatly in cleanliness & service but if you find one that is managed well & kept clean (USF location not so much, hence the 3 stars), as you may well know, they make a darn good grease burger too!

Steak and Shake happens to be one of my mom’s favorite restaurants, thus I have been a patron for years.
I think they have a very good chili, cheese dog. There chili has always been good, now add a good hot dog, some cheese & diced raw onions and you have another winning combination.
We all know about there burgers, sliders, fries, chili, baked beans, malts, hot fudge sundaes. … all pretty top notch for the niche they fill in the restaurant world.
Breakfast, lunch or dinner, Steak and Shake will give you a good meal for a fair price.
They all look pretty identical, but each has a personality of it’s own. A great place to meet to catch up with a friend or even to dine alone. I have found pretty consistent food over the years. Now, service is a different story, that can vary from the time you enter to the time you leave. On my last visit service was very good. The entire experience was a winning combination.
What’s a girl to do? Keep winning combinations coming your way!

My boyfriend and I came to this location and let me tell you… it was the worst experience ever! The food came out before our milkshakes, I asked for water and didn’t get it until the food came, and we waited 8 minutes before we got seated. Worst experience ever. I don’t know if I even want to ever go back to this location. Fix these problems please.

Some of the burgers are really good, like the Garlic Double burger, and the Jalapeño Crunch burger! Service is usually ok… not lightning fast or anything, but if you are patient, it works! If you are impatient… I would not recommend dining here.
Fries are good if you get them right out of the fryer… if they have been sitting a while, not so good.
The milkshakes are very good… I usually get just plain old boring vanilla, and love them!

Ordered four hot chocolates got four cups of hot water. Waited ten minutes to place an order. Service was dismal. I would recommend that my friends or family avoid this place at all costs.

I Love steak’n Shake but this is the WORST in the area. I’ve eaten at this location more than once to give it a chance but it’s filthy so I’m never returning. My last visit, there was a huge roach crawling on the window by our table and the waiter did nothing, asked to see a manager, was ignored. Finally spoke to a «Manager» and he casually told me the roaches come out when they exterminate and shrugged me off. There are plenty of restaurants on fowler, save yourself the hassle and eat somewhere else.

Wish I could give a lower score. Went through the drive through, they told me it would be ten minutes for my order of a spicy chicken sandwich, grilled cheese, and fries. I was fine with that, but thirty minutes passed with no one coming outside. Went inside and sat at the bar where the guy at the register repeatedly made eye contact but never said hello or made any attempt to greet me. He had repeated conversations with his manager in front of me trying to figure out his tips, but would not give me the ten seconds to greet me so I could tell him I was a customer from the drive through. Close to an hour has passed by the time I figure to yell for the person I have recognized as the manager and ask for a refund, and he leaves and I have to yell for his attention a second time to even get the refund. Over an hour spent with worse service than McDonalds and no food. Do not go here.

Ugh… Consistently confused and poor service. What a shame. One of those places where you wonder how awesome it could be if it was run correctly. Food was fine, but service and attitude was really sad. Indifferent staff, a store full of frustrated customers… Doesn’t the company care? Guess not.

Horrible service! Waited at drive thru for over ten minutes no one responded, then drove up to window and nobody came, parked and walked in, there was one table seated and a line of people waiting to order (which had probably done the dame thing I did). after observing the lack of enthusiasm of the staff and the fact that no one customer had been helped in the 20 mins I had been waiting and all the employees were walking around like zombies. I decided to leave… This is not the first time this has happened, the first time was several months ago when I swore off visiting this location the last time (but that time I was dumb enough to keep waiting and finally got food bit it was horrible)…but I did give it another try tonight because I know there are bad days… but this is way more then a bad day… this is poor management and if you continue to ignore these facts it is negligent on your part… you could be doing alot better… I usually prefer steak and shake over any other fast food joint… but lately it’s been hard to say that… this Fowler location has went down hill! I worked in Hospitality for over 6 years prior to my current job in Media Journalism. This location has to be losing money… there is no way that sales can be maintaining when you have employees that simply don’t care… I’m sure there are people in our community that would appreciate the job more then the clowns working in the now… With the reputation that steak and shake has yooou would think they would stay on top of this!
Very disappointed, longtime customer who’s not visiting Fowler store again for awhile.
Your forcing me to officially switch to Five Guys!

Avoid the place like a case of herpes. My wife and I waited over 20 minutes of a waitress to even acknowledge we were even sitting in a booth. And when we finally was able to wave her over she skips our table to go hug a friend of hers. My wife and I both said fuck it and walked out. They will never get another penny from me.

Was appalled at the poor service. Took 10 minutes for one of the two servers to wipe down a table so we could be seated. 32 minutes later our food arrived. Our shakes arrived after the meal was finished. Then 15 minutes in line to pay while we watched another table give up on paying and just walk out the door. Never seen somewhere so poorly staffed or managed. Food was good, experience was horrible. Stay away from this location.

I will keep this review short and too the point…
Long ago, my wife and I use to come here at least twice a month. Since then, all of our favorite servers have quit. The servers they have now SUCK BIG TIME!
Our order was taken by a «manager». After a while, I noticed what looked like our order in the window. I looked around for the «manager» and she was outside talking with someone. THEN… she went to her car and left. I asked a waitress walking by if she could check if the food in the window was ours and sure enough… it was our order.
Then, I noticed some red things in my fries. I called a waitress over and she said she wasn’t sure what it was. At that moment, another manager was walking by (Coco). I asked her what this was in my fries. She seriously had a deer in the headlight look. No «I’m sorry». No «Let me get you a new order». No «this isn’t suppose to be like this» NOTHING! Sorry to say but she totally looked like a dumbass starring at me.
I told my wife, we will NEVER be back at this place again.
By the way… the waitress we did have said she was leaving as well. Go figure!

This is a chain… I know, but I live in California, and so this is the first time I’d ever eaten at one of these, and I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a western burger, and a guacamole hot dog. The burger was pretty decent. Bun toasted on the grill perfectly, burger was juicy, sauce was okay, and the only thing I didn’t like all too much was the crunchy fried onion in it… no replacement for an onion ring! The guacamole hot dog though, perfect! Hit the spot, and I’m usually not crazy about hot dogs. I put some of the pepper sauce/​juice on it, and it added perfectly to the guac.
They did however fail on service, being very, VERY slow to serve the food. And actually screaming throughout the restaurant that they were out of cups, and so they couldn’t serve shakes or drinks… and this seemed to start a pretty amusing uproar in the restaurant. Very funny actually how much the people in the restaurant started freaking out about not getting their shakes promptly.
It wouldn’t be my first choice for a meal, but in the future I could easily see myself coming here again.
