The loveliest detour you’ll ever take! Cheesecake wine(literally smells like cheesecake), the hostess and regulars are the most lively, genuine and charismatic people you’ll ever want to meet, a featured winery in the movie Sideways — very cool, and the Maximus Merlot is the perfect ending to the perfect wine tasting experience. We came in feeling like strangers and left feeling like family. Some of the best wine, conversation and people you’ll find off the 101 fwy. Highly recommend this place.

Great service and wine. The two girls that served us really knew and appreciated the wine. The Syrah and Pinot were excellent! Great deal for the wine tasting as well!

Completely empty. We were the only ones in there. The whole time. It’s super Bowl Sunday but still. no one. Not a good sign since other wineries we had just been to were hopping. No wines blew me away. Extremely stark feel. Even the Sideways memorabilia. …Like, didn’t draw me in to want to look at it. A too serious feel about it. Pourer was very nice, but also serious. And the worst part– No dogs allowed. Even outside. So who’s leaving their dog in a hot car? Because so many wineries are dog friendly, I bring my 6 pounder. Everyone enjoys the shit out of her. A strict rule of No Dogs *even outside* is for the birds. Boo. Hiss. And so, Tallulah hung out in her bag, on a purse hook under the bar. Shshsh ;-) I don’t recommend… Wines were just okay for me. And I wasn’t a fan of the atmosphere for the simple fact that it lacked warmth and a welcoming vibe.

Intimate atmosphere that loves to remind its customers that a scene from the movie«Sideways» was shot there. We get it. Let’s talk about the wine. Most wines grown on site. Knowledgeable servers. Probably the best deal in the area. We tried 12 – 15 bottles for $ 12.

While I was a fan of their wine while tasting, what they send you is NOTHING like what you taste. I don’t recommend joining the wine club you will get ripped off and they won’t cancel your membership, even after dozens of calls to dispute.

Blackjack Ranch is a must stop! I immediately felt right at home upon entering the tasting room. Make sure you take the time to slow down and take everything in. Whether it’s old bowling lanes turned into a counter for the bar, the showcasing of the original seats from Wrigley Field, stills featuring this Winery from the movie Sideways, or even the cork trees out front, do not blow past Blackjack Ranch. You can tell that there’s something a little extra and special about the wine. I’m a Merlot fan, and the Billy Goat is among the best, if not the best I have ever had… trust me. Not to mention both Asta and Allison working in the tasting room were amazing and an absolute hoot! This place was too much fun, and a breath of fresh air from some of the other stuffy wineries around(you know which ones I’m speaking of). Blackjack Ranch absolutely needs to be one of your stops, no doubt about it.

The women that worked there were great! However after the wine tasting I was offered a taste of last years Chardonnay. Tasted good. I bought a case of it at discount of course. When I got home… every single bottle from case was bad! Obviously not the same thing I had tried there. Each bottle smelled of vinegar horribly :(

We stopped here on a wine tour. It was alright– probably my least favorite experience but not my least favorite wine. The lady doing our pours had a sour puss expression on her face the entire time. She didn’t offer any tasting notes and didn’t bother explaining anything to me or my friends. The Maximus was our favorite wine though.

The wine staff was adequate. The wine was subpar. This place has a lot of «deals» on wine, by the case and by the bottle. To me this usually means the wine doesn’t sell that well. By the way most wines here have a rating on the menu. Most wines are rated in the 90’s. The owner is the one rating the wine.

We stopped on a wine tour. The most pours for the price, the charming Blackjack(from Sideways) is perfect for average people trying to have a good time and a bang for their buck. It’s not perfect if, like the other reviewers here, you are a little too particular with your wine choices, you’re expect your ass to get kissed by 5 star waiters, or you’re trying to take your 18 yr old wine tasting. Let’s wine, not whine.

Enjoyed our tasting, as usual, at this boutique winery. The«A» Team of Asta and Allison were terrific and know their wines and great customer service. Don’t skip this tasting rom to go to a bigger name — the wines here are spectacular!

AWFUL! The WORST customer service in the valley! We are locals & industry who were interested in their winery because we wanted to try something new, but we couldn’t have been treated worse! Aren’t we the crowd you should most impress? Extremely rude right off the bat and made us feel very unwelcome. Do not let Sideways pitch fool you! We should’ve known. Stick to the yummy wines, personable, knowledgeable, welcoming & friendly staff and all things good about our wine country! Pass on Blackjack.

Came here spontaneously, had my ID scanned and then investigated further along with asking when my birthday was. The staff was alright, one older lady was a bit standoff-ish and treated me a bit condescending. The wine did not excite me nor did the atmosphere. Will not be back.

Wine was ok. But the service was pretty horrible. They were rude and dismissive the entire time we were there. If it doesn’t bother u then go for a cheap tasting. But don’t go for the experience or the service

I Walked in with a party of 5. I couldn’t wait to introduce my friends who Live up here to Blackjack Winery. We were 2 couples with an 18 yr. To our dismay we were told that no one under 21 was allowed inside. Really? We were up here for 3 days and saw kids a lot younger in every place we went to as well as us. On the door it said no minors. Is an 18 yr. old a minor? And is that the Law? Not only did they lose a customer they lost a potential new customer who actually lives up here! There response was something about the residents who Live nearby which my friends are. Too many wineries that want our money to waste on them! Dr.Turek

This was our LEAST favorite winery in the area. They’re definitely riding off the Sideways movie and not off the quality of their wines. There wasn’t one wine that we enjoyed and the price points are absolutely ridiculous. The owner of the place rates his own wines in the 90s, really??? Unless you’re a fan of super oaky chardonnay or boozy fruit bomb, you’ll want to pass on this one.

The wines were drinkable. The final syrah on the tasting menu really jumped out as a winner. I enjoyed it and might have bought some. The overall attitude though was a bit off-putting. When we walked in at 4:30, we were told that we would only be able to taste a few wines because they close at 5. I understand there are rules to follow. It was the way it was said that was a bit rude. Then they handed us these mini wine glasses like something from a children’s play set. They charge $ 12 for tasting but can’t afford real wine glasses? I like the Sideways connection and that was fun to see. The décor in general needs a remodel. The tasting room employee had just started working there, so understandably did not know a lot about the wines. A manager was able to help her out. But the staff was definitely rushing us in an uncomfortable way. That’s my two cents.

Is there a no star option? I give this winery 2 thumbs down. I was not at all impressed by this winery. First, we were greeted by a very rude staff member. The wines may have been good but I couldn’t tell since they poured them into tiny port glasses. They were big Bordeaux style wines and didnt have any opportunity to open up to taste the full potential. When I made a comment about the glass size to the staff member she walked away and left the other staff member to serve me. Oops. This winery was also a total sell-out cashing in on Sideways and all the media hype. LAME! They were way too pretentious for my taste without the goods to back it up.

Okay, you were in Sideways… we get it… maybe get off that train now? I was not impressed by this place, our friends are members and they said that before the movie it was a really cool winery with a laid back vibe. Not anymore… Didn’t really like their wines and didn’t appreciate being treated like a teenager trying to get drunk(which is how I think they treat everyone). PASS

Tried this place on my 2nd trip to Solvang and really enjoyed it, did not encounter any problems as other Unilocalers have, pourer was very kind and explained to us the various wines we were tasting. I notice they are riding the Sideways Movie, but come on, what do you expect? What other movie can they ride on? Give them some credit, they are doing what other places in america have done for years. Bought a few wine bottles and was on my way to another wine tasting room. If you come across this place check them out, they are small compaired to many along this area, but worth the try. Enjoy your taste and just be happy. If you want to buy or not want to buy no problem, you just waisted $ 12 or $ 10 bucks, you get less entertainment in a 2 hour movie for the same price. Drink!
