Dittmar’s apples are as fresh as they get and absolutely delicious. This little stand is located under a massive Valley Oak with easy parking alongside and the apple groves behind. The apple varieties offered change over the season as they become ripe. When out of season, the stand is closed. When the stand is open, an apple flag flies along Alamo Pintadato so you can see it as you drive along. Mr. Dittmar was not there last Friday, but thankfully the apples were. We picked up two large bags each of Pink Ladies and Granny Smiths. The large bags are $ 10, small bags $ 5. The barrel of seconds was empty. When Mr. Dittmar is not there, you pay by the honor system, dropping cash into a can. Many of the old farm stands and pick your own crops in the SYV are long gone. We are so grateful that Dittmar’s hangs in there. The apples are so crisp and tasty, we usually eat one on the way home and so fresh that they last weeks in our refrigerator.

Even though we’re having a rare rain, I’m wanting to drive up to Santa Ynez to buy Mr. Dittmar’s fujis before they are all gone. I hope the horse barrel is full this time. A few bruises and worms don’t bother me. If a worm has eaten it, that tells me it hasn’t been sprayed within an inch of its life. If we’re lucky Mr. Dittmar will be there. His hearing aids don’t do the whole job, so you have to raise your voice when talking it him, but he almost always has a story. In August it was of a puma that he saw in a nearby tree. We have a schedule of which apple is sold in which month. I think I copied it from a sign he has at the stand. At any rate, Dittmar’s apple stand is so good, we make the drive from SB to SY just for that.

My wife and I stop by for apples every time we are in the Santa Ynez Valley. Sometimes we’ve stopped by and the owner wasn’t in the stand. We just put out money in a coffee can and take a bag. The apple are so delicious it’s a refreshing break from wine tasting. You have to stop by and try them out.
