My third time in. The food was amazing, and the service was out standing. First time here we had CODA alla VACCINARA and GNOCCHI al’AMATRICIANA. OMG-ox tail was the best. Lunch BRESAOLA and PORCHETTA. Drinks are great and the staff was an event. Jacopo, Rika, Gianni, Massi, Francesca, Jamie, Chief Mattia, and all where great. If your not sure what to order, ask. You will not regret.

I brought my wife here for our anniversary. The ambiance is cool(we ate downstairs) but I felt cramped and we were seated next to the restroom which definitely did not make our experience better. I specifically said this was for our anniversary when I made the reservation but I still felt like we were herded. The bruschetta was the best part of the meal but nothing to die for. Unless there are no reservations left in the city or you’re just having a quick meal passing through I say skip this place especially if it’s for a specifically occasion.

This restaurant was very nice. Food was very good, I enjoyed the gnocchi. Wine list was extensive. It was crowded in the middle of the week and the staff was very accommodating to the short wait. We were moved to the bar to start us out with drinks and then quickly had a table ready for the three of us.

I feel like this place might be a little touristy trapped. The ambiance is nice and the food is good, but the menu is sparse(no risotto), and the restaurant as a whole is a little disheveled. The tables are so short, I’m 5’8, was wearing flats and could not sit comfortably under the table. I ate my meal a foot away from the table. They told me they’re all like that(most of them are). Upstairs tables and the bigger tables are taller. Ask for one of those tables. We ordered our food at around 8:45 and ate dinner at 10pm. Dang. They did not have it together, unless you have 3 hours to kill or are with a large group that is not immediately hungry.

I will start off by saying that this place sucks! And that will be the best this review gets. It started off bad when the bus boy brought glasses of water with no ice. When we asked for ice we got a dirty look. Then we ordered some cheese ball appetizer. They tasted like toaster pizza. Blah at best. Next we ordered our meal. There were four of us. We each ordered a white pasta dish. I got the carbonara. Literally at the same time we all took a bite and then said«this is salty!» And it was dry and flavorless. Who gives this place 4 or 5 stars? Hipster tech geeks? Just because some place is pretentious and the wait staff think they are all that doesn’t mean it actually is. If you want good Italian this ISNOT the place to go to!!!

If you’re looking for a good Italian lunch spot in SOMA, this is a pretty good stop. You’re immediately pulled in by the outside seating(on a nice day) and the bustle of people in the surrounding ding area. Granted, mint plaza isn’t the«nicest» of areas but the fact that neighboring blue bottle coffee draws a big crowd, you have nothing to worry about :) One of the reasons I like this place is the assorted bread basket that shows up right when you sit down. Breadsticks, rustic bread, and many others are a great start. :) Anyway, on to the trout. It was a pleasant dish, and really hit the spot. Nicely cooked, and the capers played well with the red sauce. Naturally. It was a bit pricey($ 24) as that’s generally a bit too steep for most lunch menus. All in all, a solid order though. Overall, I’d say this is a great spot for a business lunch. If you’re wanting to be able to get into a place without a reservation it seems like they can always accommodate.

Friend took me here for my bday. She knows the cook so we were taken care of very well. The Lyft driver got a little lost getting here because it was in an alley but just know it’s next door to Mezzanine. We had reservations and were seated quickly. It was a cute seating area but the chair was high and the table was low so I couldn’t cross my legs so I was a bit uncomfortable during dinner and had to sit awkwardly with my chair turned slightly sideways for leg room. It was weird but that is my only gripe. It looked like they had some really nice outside seating as well. The wine the chef recommended was wonderful. It was an $ 80 bottle. I forgot the names of the dishes we ordered but it was all amazing. My friend is super picky about her food and if she recommended it I know it had to be good. The chef sent out two complimentary drinks which was tequila shots lol we could barely take a baby sip of that. He came out and cheers with us and our shots. By the time we left, everyone was gone. The staff offered to take pics and then invited us to Mezzanine next door. We didn’t go but they were very sweet for inviting us. I would highly recommend and definitely come back!

54 Mint is a cozy Italian restaurant with a vibrant, casual ambiance, modern, rustic interiors with gray monotones and ambient lighting. It’s another hip, big city restaurant with a unique atmosphere, excellent food and great service. Spaces are narrow to get around. The service is warm, attentive and friendly. They have some very unique cocktails that are worth trying. I enjoyed a couple Pinocchio’s mixed with house made hibiscus cordial and mezcal. It’s a refreshing, foam topped libation free of all that sugar. The menu is very enticing. Although, I didn’t get the bruscetta with sea urchin as an ingredient, it was tempting. My cousin and I decided to share everything. We ordered the grilled octopus(Polipo) with purple potatoes and chickpeas. What an interesting and most delectable concoction! The octopus was tender enough to cut with my fork and absent of any rubbery textures. We ordered the Misticanza salad which was simply served up with a red wine shallot vinaigrette — much like the plain red wine vinegar dressing our grandma used to drizzle on her salads. –loved it! All the entrees were best defined as seduction for the appetite. In the name of portion control, we decided to split the amazing oxtail(Coda alla Vaccinara). Five tender, braised oxtails arrived in a tomato, pancetta sauce. As expected, the meat fell off the bone from my prodding fork. If I weren’t in a public domain, I would have been suckling on the bone too. What a fulfilling meal! Unfortunately, there was no room for dessert. I definitely relished my experience here. Excellent food, service, friendly faces and a comfortable atmosphere is as good as it gets! You get what you pay for here. I’d do it again.

We came in at the very tail of the lunch hour. Staff was great and didn’t rush us. Party of 10 and served prefectly with various courses coming in nice succession. Simple pasta Bolgnese was a hit – great flavor and lovely pasta. Salads were yummy and well dressed. Carbonara was meh(which is why I stole hubbys Bolgnese). He liked it though. Very good but a little pricey. More like $$$ than $$.

We went here to eat before going to see Wicked. Service was friendly, but slow. Waited close to 10 minutes after our drinks were empty to finally have to ask another server to get us another round of drinks. The antipasti bruschetta was horrible. It has raw sea urchin on the top that was disgusting. That was $ 16 wasted. So I just took that off the tip I was going to give. The Carbonara was good, as was the Tonnarelli however it was just a dish with white noodles. No veggies, nothing else, just that for $ 18.00. They didn’t even offer us bread to go with our dish. That would have made the dish better. At this time I wouldn’t recommend this place and I’m Italian of that says anything. I can appreciate and love good Italian food.

The name«54 Mint» doesn’t exactly remind me of any restaurant names in Italy. So I was a bit concerned that this was some sort of crazy interpretation of Italian food in SF. Rest assured, it’s not. The place — as others have said — has a cool décor about it. I was warmly greeted. I chose to sit at the bar. Wine list by the glass is all Italian. Pours are average. Bread was awesome. The Misticanza was well made and properly dressed. Which is to mean you don’t find any dressing dripping at the bottom of your plate. It was a nice size — but again it better be for $ 12. The gnocchi. The gnocchi itself was clearly fresh and very well made. The pork and beef ragu however was underwhelming. Honestly it took over the plate which to me was disappointing. Service started off prompt and attentive but started to slack as the restaurant became busier. The bartender became overwhelmed dealing with drinks and trying to serve people at the bar(which was NOT full). He totally forgot to ask me if I wanted more wine or if I wanted dessert. So this is a mixed review deserving of 3 stars. This is a popular place(even on a random Monday night) so be sure you make a reservation. If you’re staying in the Union Square/Moscone area this is a decent place. Other dishes may be better than what I chose — but unfortunately, tonight I was underwhelmed.

Celebrated with my team here for lunch on a Friday. Reservations can be easily made on OpenTable. I really enjoyed the lunch here. We split a ton of their appetizers across the table and each got a pasta entrée. Everything was delicious. I especially liked the tripe(try one even if it sounds bizarre to you! They do it really really well.) Other notable appetizers: The octopus, the cheese ball, the anchovies! Just thinking about the food makes me hungry again: P Their pastas are also great and on par with ones I’ve had at good Italian restaurants around the city. I do recommend making a reservation here as space is limited. If you do decide to come by I think you won’t be disappointed. :)

Fantastic Italian restaurant hidden in the alleyways of Mint Plaza. It’s cozy, intimate but yet feels upscale. The staff come across as warm, friendly Italian characters — one went as far as to hug me on the way out unsolicitedly. All the food was amazing. POLiPO(grilled octopus, chickpeas, purple potatoes, celery) to start was amazingly tender and flavorful. CACIO e PEPE here was also filling and tasting(basically pecorino cheese on top of pepper and pasta). They did a special on fresh fettuccine and lamb pasta which was fantastic too. The mushroom RiSOTTO was probably the best risotto I’ve ever had! I’d come back here in a heart beat.

Went here last night to meet an old friend who was in the city for the Super Bowl weekend. I was impressed with this little restaurant. Their Moscow Mules were bomb(had 2) and started dinner with 2 apps: Butternut squash and the grilled octopus which were both a 10⁄10. Had the fish special which was lightly seared and had a delicious buttery finish. This is a great place for a date, or getting together with friends for a special occasion. Our waiter was really passionate about the food which is always entertaining to watch. Our bill was $ 180 for 3 people and that included 2 apps, 3 entrees and 2 drinks each — which I think is very reasonable. I happened to bump into Vince Vaughn(who was having dinner in the private area/room downstairs) — it was a little surreal but a nice bonus to a great dinner. The place is really nice without being pretentious. I would definitely recommend 54 Mint.

54 Mint is a small yet charming Italian restaurant tucked in an alley of 5th and Mission near the Westfield shopping mall. I never knew this place even existed until I dined here for a team lunch. It was raining hard that day so we took the muni to Powell street Bart station and walked to the restaurant. There are also parking garages nearby — check 5th and Mission. I ordered fettuccine al ragu and had their soup of the day. It was tasty, decent but not entirely memorable. What stood out to me here was the atmosphere. Upon arrival, I was immediately captivated by its cool, sort of European countryside ambiance. The medium sized glass windows and framed mirrors that reflected natural light made the place appear so much brighter and more spacious. The white painted cement walls and interior added a rustic but elegant feel, and overall just exudes warmth and character. Even though I wasn’t very satisfied with the dishes(as nothing stood out to me), I think this is a wonderful setting for a lunch date with friends or a significant other.

I’ve eaten at restaurants all around the world and I can genuinely say that our experience at 54 Mint was by far in the top five. The food was incredible(especially the grilled octopus and croquettes), but what truly made this experience unforgettable was the service from our waiter Salvadore. He was entertaining, passionate, and constantly went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. I will never forget this dinner out with my mom. Five stars all the way! Small Italian place you wouldn’t even find if you didn’t Unilocal it or heard it recommended by a friend. It’s in the Mint Plaza, between Market and Mission Streets. Parking is hard to find nearby, so best bet is the garage on Mission(between 4th and 5th). Upstairs and downstairs are pretty small, and if there’s a big group nearby, the acoustics of the place makes it hard to hear. I recommend getting a reservation in, no matter how small your party.(They do have a bar area, though, if you don’t mind that.) Appetizers were great. I wish I could remember the Italian names for them, though. We ordered three apps — all delicious, so you can’t go wrong! Breaded lamb chops with garlic sauteed spinach($ 30) was amazing. I recommend it!

This is a very authentic Italian restaurant(just as La Ciccia which specialized in Sardinian food), with mostly(but not exclusively) Italian staff. As an European who is married to an Italian guy, I really appreciate this place, for us it feels like being home. The food is the best quality, especially the daily fish(also cacio e pepe couldn‘t get more Roman than this! the chef is from Rome, so this is one of their signature dishes). It is always very hard to decide what to eat, because we love everything on the menu. The restaurant is pretty small(someone mentioned in a comment not to bring your laptop — I don‘t understand why would you?! this is not Starbucks, it is a restaurant and as part of the European but most importantly the Italian culture, we get together to eat and socialize… meet friends or make new friends). One of the cons is that downstairs it may get very noisy during peak hours, but that is basically the only con I can tell. Fortunately there is the patio as well when the weather allows. Although we never had any problem with same-day reservations either — we either had dinner at the bar(which we enjoy the most) or they were able to fix us a table. Be ready to eat not Americanized Italian food, but real Italian dishes the way they would be cooked in Italy, where the quality is super important(although the portions are pretty big as well!). No added flavors or so, so be ready to explore real slow food. This might be a disappointment for those who are too used to food flavor enhancers. The staff is amazing, although sometimes they may run a bit tight. Overall very attentive, bringing real hospitality manners from Italy! They love to have fun and are super hospitable. The menu is carefully curated and not too long(fresh ingredients!) and there are daily specials as well. Overall one of the best Italian restaurant you can find in San Francisco(as well as La Ciccia & Montesacro).

The food is MEH… super over priced and everything tasted so sour to me for some reason. It’s a super pricey but it’s a cute little place for a date. My date took me here on a Sat night. The place was empty at first(around 630pm) but it filled up quickly. The place itself is pretty small so I would not recommend bringing your work laptop backpacks here. You would have no room to put it. The staff are quite friendly and are always glad to explain the entire menu to me. Maybe it’s just me, but i feel like their tomatoes sauce was too thick and sour to me. The whole time there, I probably only took a couple of bites out of everything we ordered. Definitely WOULDNOT recommend this place… unless you like wine. They have a large wine collection here!

The table reservation was really efficient and when we called just an hour ago to add a guest they were really gracious about it. Also the staff was super friendly and extremely attentive and eager to please. Loved that about them. The food was just ok(for the husband and me anyway: we are vegetarian). As we shared initial dishes in a party of 4. One was the spinach salad. And while I love Olive oil, the spinach was swimming in it. Then came a squash ‘Pâté ’ like dish in what seemed like a crème fraîche sauce. Delectable but it gave me a sore throat for the next couple days.

I picked this place for my Supper club based on a recommendation. I came with 4 other people and we brought a bottle of wine to drink. Atmosphere: The restaurant is very cute and looks like a good date night spot. Food: We started with the suppli which were really good and HUGE. I would give those a 4.5÷5. All the pastas that I tried were very mediocre. Nothing special or flavorful about any of them. I ordered the cacio e pepe which was made with home-made pasta, so I thought it would be amazing. It was fine, but not amazing. 3⁄5. I also tried the gnocchi(3⁄5). Amanatriata(2/5)-which literally tasted like spaghetti and tomato sauce from a can, which is still good, but not for $ 20 at a restaurant. The carbonara was the best, 3.5÷5, but still not anything amazing. Dessert– We got the panna cotta which was a lot better than I expected(4⁄5) and the chocolate torta(3⁄5) — basically a brick of chocolate. Overall– I was disappointed by how mediocre the pasta was. Nothing was bad, but nothing was amazing either. For the price, I wouldn’t go back.

I have no idea how this place received such high reviews. Must be friends and family members posting them. There is no way that they deserve more than 2 stars and that’s being generous! Horrible food, awful presentation, everything we ate tasted bland and pretty much the same as the previous dish, as if they all came out of Chef Boyardee cans,. horrible service, horrible ambiance and expensive! We went to 54 Mint for my wife’s birthday and realized I had a work lunch there before. It definitely transforms well from day to night. Service was attentive and polite, Francesca and what I’m assuming it’s her husband handle the dining room gracefully. The food quality was high and the preparation authentic(Francesca is from Rome and that’s reflected in some local specialties on the menu). I found the octopus particularly well done. The Supplí reminded me of home. The décor is curated but not pretentious. We sat in the downstairs dining room. There the lighting could use some improvement(a little harsh and impersonal) but it seemed warmer upstairs. An interesting note is that the restaurant seems to be frequented by an older clientele. Lots of couples in their 50s, make what you wish of that. Overall, Mint 54 definitely places strongly amongst the other worthy Italian restaurants in the city(Farina, La Ciccia) offering a broader menu, without lacking regional character.

We were re-directed here from an overbooked Montesacro Pinseria(54 Mint’s sister restaurant) on a Friday night, where we showed up without reservations(whoops). 54 Mint was great about accommodating us despite the short notice(15 – 20 minute wait) even though the restaurant was clearly busy. Enjoyed my overall experience thoroughly. Italian isn’t always my go-to cuisine because I generally find the food to be quite heavy, hard to finish, and taste the same. My Amatriciana(bucatini, tomato, onions, pancetta, pecorino) was delicious and portion size was perfect. I actually finished it. Our vanilla panna cotta with aged balsamic vinegar was also top notch. Why don’t more restaurants use balsamic vinegar for desserts? The tart-sweetness goes with the vanilla sweetness so well. Food — Solid A, but a bit overpriced(hence the 4 stars). Interior — Awesome. Homely but also trendy. Best part? Everyone working here was conversing in Italian! Maybe I’m just a susceptible American consumer but restaurants automatically seem x2 more legitimate to me when the people working there speak the language.

I had dinner at 54 Mint on a Wednesday evening with a friend visiting from out of town. We were looking for high-quality but down-to-earth Italian, and were relieved to find it close to Market but tucked away. Looking to change things up, we sat at the bar and ordered dazzling rose raspberry mojitos. To keep it simple, we shared plates of gnocchi with pork and beef ragù and tortelloni filled with leek and ricotta. We ordered probably three baskets of bread; it felt impossible not to clean our plates. Our server, the bartender, had just started but was really personable, timely, and composed. Along with the rest of the servers, whose fast-paced Italian and attentive service gave the small space an authentic, exciting energy, he really made us want to return.

Agradable restaurante italiano.

Good authentic Italian restaurant. The entrance & patio area are super cute and start reminding you of Europe already, before entering inside. We had dinner on a Saturday night and started off by having drinks — there are many many wine options! They are all Italian, too. We split an appetizer of tomatoes, cucumbers, capers and basil. It was a very colorful and fresh plate. Then, we had the gnocchi. I asked to have mine with tomato & basil sauce. They are pretty flexible on substitution which is cool! The sauce was very flavorful and not oily at all which I loved. I added salt, the dish needed a little of it. I think it’s great that they let you choose how salty your dish is. The gnocchi themselves were served hot, just made, fresh and soft. They were yummy. The portion was not oversized. It was great to not feel TOO stuffed after dinner. We felt… healthy — with all these natural and fresh ingredients in our bellies. The décor and ambiance are great and as the staff is Italian you definitely feel like you’re traveling a bit! The menu is not very long but I definitely recommend this place if you’re craving fresh healthy pasta!

Italian restaurants make me feel conflicted. On the one hand there’s something for everyone on the menu; even the most annoyingly picky eaters can find something to please their child-like palate. But on the other hand, I often feel like, «I could make that at home and they want $ 23?» But this place isn’t your standard Il Fornaio(no offense IF fans); this place is about so much more than just the food. We arrived early for dinner and the hostess(who was great) suggested we sit at the bar for their happy hour. The bartender(also great) made me the best Negroni I’ve ever had. Really. They even have some certification posted over the bar from some Negroni Governing Council. I couldn’t read it, but I didn’t need to; it was good. They also gave us complimentary almonds and chips, which were both homemade and delicious. Dinner was great. My wife got the gnocchi and I got one of the specials(clam spaghetti). We shared both dishes and were very happy with both of them. After my Negroni I wasn’t feeling motivated enough to look at the wine list, so the waiter(also great) suggested a white that paired perfectly with the spaghetti. Unfortunately we weren’t hungry enough for an appetizer or a dessert, but hope to try those in the future. Like I said, the food was great but this place was about more than just that; it feels like a small, friendly restaurant in Florence or Rome. There was a nice mix of locals and tourists, and the staff made everyone feel welcome. Everyone was warm and friendly, and the space itself is casual in a very traditional and European way. If we had a place like this closer to home we’d be there at least once a month.

Absolutely fell in love with this place. Such cute décor and SUCHGOODFOOD. We tried their special — the chicken liver pâté — and we loved it. Super tasty. I got the Amantriciana pasta and my goodness was it good. I don’t normally like thick noodles, but their handcrafted noodles were to die for. So flavorful and rich. The sauce and smoked pancetta just rounded out my dish. I’m craving it again :( This place stays true to its italian name — all italian alcohols and dishes — so don’t come here expecting some americanized italian food. this place serves some RICH food, just a warning. Service was impeccable — really helpful and attentive waiters. It helped that it wasn’t busy when we went. This place is in a weird area and can be a little sketchy at night. No heaters for the outside seating so if it’s cold, sit inside. Just a warning! We saw security have to wave away homeless people when we sat inside. But no biggie! Please try this if you’re looking for italian food! Plus they have happy hour everyday from 4 – 6, bar only!

I believe I came here since I had a $ 25 off certificate. Towards the end of 2012, they were having a sale on $ 25 certificates for $ 1 each, so I bought a few and decided to give some new restaurants a whirl. January 2013 *Bread *Selection of 3 salumi and 2 formaggi($ 18) *Gnocchi al ragu($ 17) *Polipo alla griglia($ 16) *Bistecca($ 28) *Tiramisu($ 8) It was nice finding 54 Mint through . I probably would have never checked them out otherwise. I loved the salumi and octopus. There was a nice selection with the salumi and the octopus was tender but still retained a nice chew. Overall, I’d say 3.5 stars. Rounded up to 4 stars since I had $ 24 off and our server was super helpful and sweet.
