This place is definitely recommended if your on the river walk. Drinks, food and atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for after a long day. The lamb lettuce wraps are delicious!

This is one of our favorite places to bring family and friends that are visiting SA. The vibe is awesome and I love the history of the place!!! It can get loud(if a band is playing) and quite warm in summer… welcome to SA heat and humidity, but that is to be expected. The drinks are strong and superb and the food is surprisingly AWESOME! get the pork belly rillettes(you will thank me later) and a side of grits!!! the rest is pretty amazing and you can’t go wrong.

We came on a busy Saturday night but still managed to snag a table without a reservation. The service was awesome! Very attentive, great suggestions & friendly. We started with the pickles. I had the Chili Rellano & hubby ordered a burger with pineapple & jalapeños. Everything was great! The Chili Rellano was delicious. It kinda reminded me of eggplant parm with the crispy fried batter and fresh tomato sauce. Yum! Very cool atmosphere.

A welcome escape from the madness of the Riverwalk. Everything about this restaurant compels a return visit. From the outstanding burgers to the space it occupies, this place is a winner. Enter at street level or climb the fire ladder from the Riverwalk. Once entered, the room-length bar, cozy booths and dim lit space is perfect for taking a load off your feet. The burgers are great, the cocktails are craft, the beer is cold, and I will be back.

Were from the service industry visiting san antonio for a couple days and its really hard to make us unhappy. We can easily figure out whats going on around us in terms of how busy a place is and watching service staff, but this was bad. Place was packed for lunch on a Thursday. We had to sit at the bar. Initial greet was quick and nice. It was all down hill from there. The bartender didn’t pay attention to us at all. We ordered an appetizer and had to ask twice for it, the first time having myself politely point out its been 45minutes. He didn’t care. I had to ask again, which he still didn’t care. He eventually figured it out and asked a manager. At this point we ordered our food(at least a solid 35 minutes after our appetizer) which we had to flag him down to order in the first place. Each round of drinks we had to ask for. What kind of a bartender lets empty glasses sit on his or her bar knowing people are drinking? Wierd. We of course got our food. Manager brought our appetizer after we got our lunch and my girlfriend denied the appetizer. Manager made a face and took the appetizer back and didn’t even come back and apologize for the negative experience. The bartender didn’t apologize. This was the worst service i have experienced in a long time. The people on staff this afternoon simply did not care. Place was packed and highly recommended but this review had to happen. Awful service. Awful bartender. Awful manager. Awful experience. Highly NOT recommended. Lots of other places on the riverwalk. I recommend trying the Yard House a couple blocks down or the Irish pubs along the way. Much better atmosphere and attitudes.

Delicious food! I can’t comment on the drinks because I generally don’t drink. But the empanada here is absolutely delicious! It has a nice kick to it. I’m just sad there is only one. If it’s not because of the appetizers we ordered, I probably have to order two. The fried pickle and plantains are must-tries! Apparently the pickles and pastries here are all home made. Other people in my party enjoyed their food too. The restaurant(at least the booth seats) is super dark. We had to use the flash on our phone to read the menu. Be sure to reserve seats if you don’t want to wait for a table. Even though when we reserved on opentable the day before we went had a lot of time slots still available, the place was packed and estimating wait times of an hour when we got there.

After 3 days of some seriously mediocre-at-best dining in San Antonio, this was such a welcome deviation to the Riverwalk norm. Having been in town for a conference and doing the required corporate functions at crappy venues, I couldn’t wait to sink into that booth under dim lights and read through at all the pickled things at my belly’s disposal. No one harassing you to come inside and look at the menu, no overpriced poor quality fare, no BS Maragita-ever-which-way menu. Just a dark speakeasy with delicious cocktails and fabulous comfort food. Coming up the back stairwell straight from the Riverwalk was a really cool way to enter into the ambiance here. The patio was pretty crowded on a Monday night at 9pm, always a good sign. While your eyes definitely need a brief adjustment period to the low lighting inside, the décor and layout of the space is really cool. I felt like I could burrow into that booth and drink ALL night, and I’m sure our super awesome waitress would have been fine with it! I didn’t get to try as much of the menu as I would have liked, but I basically ate an entire order of fried pickled beets myself. The deviled eggs were awesome, those pink peppercorns are a great touch. To wash down said solo beet eating adventure, I went with the Wanderlust King. Mmmmmmmm, would I like another? Yes, yes I would. Should I ever find myself back in the area, I won’t hesitate to turn down suggestions to eat at any other«classics» of SAT. I will be back here and cover more territory on the menu!

What a nice space with the high ceiling and 1930s charm. I tried 3 whisky based crafty cocktails and they were all outstanding. This ambiance and price points for this quality of cocktails is definitely not something I can easily find at home in NYC. I think the food needs to be a bit more elevated however to match the level of cocktails… I enjoyed the kale salad but everything else was deep fried and burger was overly dressed with mayo.

«The Esquire Tavern opened in 1933 to celebrate the end of Prohibition and has been a beloved San Antonio watering hole ever since.» We had to make a stop in the oldest bar on the riverwalk and contribute to the 1100+ reviews here! Accessible from the street or stairs from the riverwalk — the patio that overlooks the riverwalk is small but the inside is where it’s at! It was like Latino meets Nola and had Taxidermy babies?! Damnit, I don’t remember our bartenders name but he was impressively knowledgeable and totally fit in with the vibes. They have a huge tequila selection but also serve a variety of craft and local beers. It’s like a dark pub feel, but then there’s old world fabric wallpaper and random taxidermy everywhere. I dig it. I would only come back to the riverwalk to come here. They also offer a late night menu at 11pm.

Our overall goal was to avoid the touristy eating traps that are in San Antonio. By the time we got here I was completely wasting away from starvation. I ordered the steak salad(medium) and an order of their fries. The salad was great! The steak was cooked perfectly. The fries.meeh. I’ve had better. Their ketchup is not good at all. Would have been 4 stars had the fries been better.

Many a bad decision had been made at Esquire. The food is good, the drinks are good and so is the company. Word to the wise. They DONOT like to be asked to make pickle juice shots. I’m not sure what it says about me that I have written that in more than one Unilocal review. #stayclassy

This is the place to go if you want dinner on the Riverwalk– Skip the commercially chain type places and go here for a excellent drink and amazing food. While in San Antonio, I visited this place twice in 3 days. Wish I had skipped a few other restaurants and ate and drank here the entire time! These guys are mix masters and super knowledgeable! I was able to tell them what I felt like drinking and they were able to recommend the most perfect cocktail. For food, Apps: the fried pickles were delicious– crunchy and not too batter-y. Not overpowering like sometimes fried pickles can be. Dinner: I really wanted the Hudspeth River Ranch Lamb Lettuce Wraps(sweet & spicy pickle, tzatziki, feta, cilantro) but they were sold out so I settled for the Chicken-fried Ribeye(texas wagyu ribeye, mashed potato, southern gravy). It was delicious, but not as tasty as the Chille Relleno(pulled pork, ancho chile-refried beans, ranchero sauce, white cheddar, avocado) — which I had a bite or two of. I had ordering envy, I wish I had ordered the Relleno instead– sooo tasty. The other reviews about the atmosphere are spot on– very speakeasy vibe– dark booths, great place for a date. This was an overall excellent experience and I would recommend the Esquire Tavern highly.

Ventured into Esquire Tavern after a visit to the San Antonio Car Show sometime last year. This place advertises it’s old school and it doesn’t disappoint in that aspect. Think keep the lights so dim you’ll never notice that they haven’t dusted the place since the 70’s. Intriguing menu, beer selection, and crafted cocktails sums up the vibe. Near every place in Texas has fried pickles now; think it even might be a topping at Baskin Robbins. Normally, that offering comes straight out of the freezer ala Sysco delivery truck. Esquire advertising on the menu«house made» fried pickles. I was torn between that and some kitchy mini chalupa number. Waitress sways me towards the tex-mex option only to deliver a basket of the pickles. Immediately realizing here error she swipes the fried goodness from the table and returned to the kitchen. I’m calling a bit of a foul here; you serve it even by mistake… if it hits the table it’s mine. Minor Redemption quickly followed as she brought back a single pickle along with the correct dish. I liked both dishes. The addition of some salsa verde made the chalupas a hit; the cool ranch along with the crunchy breaded pickes made me wish I’d fought to keep the entire basket. I love shrimp toast; at least I thought I did. Near every variation I’ve ever had was assembled and cooked in a salamander. This fried option while tasty with the peppered jelly wasn’t what I expected.

I returned to the Esquire tonight with my mother for a casual, late Sunday night dinner after not having been here for 2+ years. The first time I came it was just for drinks with friends and I remember really liking the atmosphere and the cocktails. Tonight we came around 9 and there was no one near the front entrance greeting people so we figured we’d snag a server on our way to one of the open tables. We came across a server with red hair who wearing a skirt and asked her if we could sit at one of the tables outside. She let us know that she didn’t think there would be a server outside and it certainly didn’t seem like she was interested in serving us out there. I asked if it would be easier for her if we sat inside and she replied: «well… If you want a server, than yea…» with an attitude that I’m not used to getting in Texas. New York city maybe, but where’s the southern hospitality? My mom and I were somewhat put off by this, but the food that was coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled good so we gave up on Ms. Grouchy and sat ourselves at the bar. Our male server at the bar was much friendlier and even sat through my mom’s signature indecisiveness and a million questions about the menu(drives me crazy!!). He took it like a champ and gave some great recommendations. After eating nothing but meat for the past couple of days, I needed something a little greener so I chose the seared ahi tuna salad which hit the spot just right. My mom had the garden salad and added grilled chicken and enjoyed hers very much as well. We had already had a couple of drinks so no cocktails or dessert for us but for sure will be returning to indulge. As for Ms. Grouchy, hopefully she’ll be in a better mood. Wouldn’t want to inconvenience her again! Food was 4 stars, ambiance was 4 stars(loved the music), but the female server knocked this review down to a 3(would give 3.5 if I could).

Friday nights are busy, was a little hectic getting a table to have some drinks with friends. We were redirected three times finally being seated near the back window looking out on the river walk. Mixology is on point here. If you want a handcrafted adult beverage this place does not disappoint. Love the soldier ice cubes and don’t be alarmed when your glass comes half full, because that half a glass is stronger than any full glass you’d likely order elsewhere. I would like to try their marguerite and ginger beer mixed drinks next time. The ginger beer is made in house. Overall good experience, minus the hectic seating situation and being asked how long were staying for drinks due to high demand for tables. It was a good time at a nice place with good drinks.

Fancy pants cocktails and tired but tasty new american food? Yes please. We wanted somewhere to hang out and eat on the river walk that wasn’t too crowded or too cheesy. I like that this place is sitting above it all. We were able to snag a table on the patio and smoke, which I thought was forbidden everywhere, but not here. Yay. We shared– Heirloom tomato salad with a onion and fennel burratta mixture sitting on top. So good and I wished we had bread to soak up the dressing. Deviled eggs — the peppercorns added a nice flavor and I liked the arugula in the middle. The pork pâté — Not my favorite– the pork mixture was way too salty and I couldn’t enjoy it. Fried bologna sandwich with a side of chili salt fries — this was so good! I loved the pickle on the sandwich and the fries were delicious. I don’t know that I could have eaten a whole one, so I’m glad this was shared. Chocolate mousse — topped with candied orange zest and raspberries. It’s pretty dense for a mousse. I like the fruit and it was a sweet ending to a good meal. I’d try something else next time. We had a few different craft cocktails and my favorite was the peach one– it wasn’t too sweet and it was a bit dry. Everything was truely lovely until the end of a spurs game– then a whole crowd of people poured on to the VERY small patio to smoke and bro out before they went inside. We had people surrounding us and it went from a nice patio dinner to a college frat meetup real quick. We tabbed out ASAP and I could see the frustration of the staff trying to maneuver around and through these people. I was literally pressed body to body with people when I stood up to leave. It was either that or sit with everyone’s asses surrounding our table. I’d love to come back when it’s not brah city!

Phenomenal! Everything exceeded expectations from the moment we stepped foot into the restaurant famous for featuring the longest wooden bar in Texas. All five senses were fully satisfied after a house salad topped with grilled chicken paired perfectly with a light hefeweizen beer was suggested for me. I want to go back to the riverwalk soon, and if I do, this place will be at the top of my must revisit places!

Great food, culturally insensitive wait staff. We are loud middle-aged local ladies of various colors who often like to meet downtown for lunch and laughs. Eat well and tip well, we like to say! It quickly became too much stress to drag the waitstaff from the large tables of wealthy tourists. So we just helped ourselves. We took turns waiting on each other. We walked up to the bar to order our drinks and snagged cutlery from neighboring tables and condiments from the hostess podium. Lo and behold, the manager appeared when the check came. LOL! We all tipped as usual, but the crankiest of us(the celtic woman) grabbed the tips back off the table on her way out. Did I mention great food?

This is my favorite restaurant to visit whenever I come to San Antonio! Their food is fresh, delicious, and creative, their cocktails are out of this world, and the atmosphere is awesome. Decent drinks, but every time I come here they are out of dishes I’d like to order. It’s almost they have no sense of a kitchen and should probably shut it down every night at 10pm. This night they were out of deviled eggs, sweet potato croquette, and bodin. Very disappointed. If you must come here, get a reservation.

I come here every time I come to San Antonio and typically sit at the bar. The bartenders are extremely attentive and knowledgeable about all of their offerings — from cocktails to bourbons to crafts veers. Not once have I had to wait when I get to the bottom of my glass. As for the food, I haven’t had anything I didn’t like on the menu. The fried pickles and the deviled egg appetizers are terrific with subtle touches that make them unique, like the sweetness on top of the deviled eggs combined with the Nestor f peppery arugula. My favorite is the bacon cheeseburger, but I trade out the aioli for jalapeño chutney, add fresh jalapeños, and get white cheddar instead of the smoked Gouda. Hands down one of the best burgers I’ve had in the country.

Came here for my birthday with friends on a Friday night. We made a reservation and everything was set up for us. I had high hopes for this place but they crashed shortly after sitting. We ordered drinks and I got the Moscow mule while my boyfriend had a beer and friends got one of their whiskey drinks. The beer was warm and the mule seemed to have very little alcohol in it. Weak but covered with plenty of lime juice. We ordered the chips and onion dip and fried pickles to start. We did wait for our other friends to arrive so it would explain the late start but we ordered food at the same time. It took almost 30 – 40 mins to receive our appetizers and the same amount of time for our first round of drinks to arrive. It didn’t seem very busy so we weren’t sure why everything was taking so long. The onion dip was bad. A lot of spice with no other flavors. It just tasted like plain dip with nothing but jalapeño seeds. We ordered another round of drinks and our meal. My boyfriend and I shared the bacon cheeseburger and the others had the steak salad and sliders I think. The burger was decent nothing special but the little side of cauliflower and sliced carrots with jalapeños, looked exactly like you’d find in those cans lol. Keep in mind everything took 30 – 40 mins to get out. We arrived around 815 and didn’t leave til closer to 11. We only got 2 drinks and meh service here. I’ve been wanting to go to this spot for years and I should have kept it that way. I definitely wouldn’t go back here again. We were downtown, we wanted to drink not sit and wait for the drinks.

So I came here because it was highly recommended and because it has happy hour. It was packed at 6; standing room only at the bar and no tables for a half hour. So I found a standing spot at the bar and was immediately greeted by a bar back who gave me water and let me know that the bartender would be right with me. I ordered a Moscow Mule. The bartender then told me that he would keep an eye out for a seat if it opened up!!! It was awesome! A seat soon became available and he, in the middle of a slammed bar, brought the chair over to me! It was the nicest thing ever! I ordered fried pickles and«shrimp toast.» Now, I have no idea what the hell shrimp toast was, but when I tell you that I will crave it and seek it out for the rest of my life, believe it! It was sooooo good! The fried pickles are great too! I can’t recommend this place enough! Make a reservation though, it’s really busy.

Let me warn any PAX Southeast attendees — especially those that may choose to cosplay — that you are *not* welcome at the Esquire. This came from one member of the staff — a man that I assume is the manager — who told my girlfriend(while she was alone, mind you) to «don’t come back»(addressing our group). I didn’t have a Unilocal account until today. While I regularly use Unilocal to find out about all the great hot spots, night life, etc. whenever I am in a new city, terrible service and overpriced food aside, I signed up for Unilocal just to post this review. Mainly because I am *furious* that this staff member had the audacity to get in my girlfriend’s face WHILESHEWASBYHERSELF and say such a thing. We’re not even sure what prompted this, as we were not loud, we stuck to our section(that we made a reservation for) and did not hassle any other patrons. All of that aside, the service was absolutely terrible. From what I gathered, the cocktails were bland at best and rather weak. Luckily, I ordered a Texas brewed Oatmeal IPA. Seems like I made a good decision, as the bottled beer didn’t allow the Esquire’s inept bartenders to ruin my beverage. Beverage — singular — because our server only made 3 – 4 appearances at our table during our entire ~2 hour visit. Now, I know several that have worked in the industry — my girlfriend included — so I can completely sympathize with how difficult it is to serve two full tables of patrons. If you’re going to struggle with serving that many people, I can forgive that as long as it is clear that you are trying to make things right. This«waiter» never once apologized for the slow service. In fact, he seemed to carry an air of snobbery; as if we should be lucky to be allowed to dine in such a fine tourist trap.er.piece of San Antonio history. I wasn’t hungry and so I did not order food, but from what I gathered by the rest of the group, the food was mediocre and overpriced. Hmm… –Mediocre –Terrible(service) –Overpriced –Unwelcoming Are we seeing a trend here? Read the other negative reviews to see for yourself. I would say I’ll never be setting foot in this establishment again from the service and quality of the product, but the guy cornering my girlfriend and telling us to never come back makes it that much easier to avoid the place. PAX attendees, you’ve been warned.

What a cool place! Super trendy and the staff was very friendly. We sat in a booth and enjoyed lunch. The music was good and altogether the vibe was on point. We started off with a few local beers and the boiled peanuts. Coming from Florida, the boiled peanut capital if you ask me, these were pretty terrible. First off, they’re not boiled all the way, so the peanuts still have a slight crunch. They’re also served warm and dry, which doesn’t make them any better. Luckily, the entrees saved the day! I enjoyed the green goddess grilled cheese, which unfortunately was their only vegetarian meal, but very delicious. The fries were added on for $ 3. They came with two dips: ketchup and a homemade curry type sauce that was to die for! My boyfriend had the big red empanada, that he really enjoyed. And my friend had the jalapeño bean burger and ate the entire thing! Overall, it was a great place to stop in for lunch. We were visiting, otherwise I’d like to check it out for dinner too!

I have visited Esquire Tavern several times during my visits to San Antonio. It’s one of my favorite spots. Esquire boasts being the oldest bar on the river walk, with the longest wooden bar in Texas. It opened in 1933 to celebrate the end of the prohibition. If only the walls could speak, they would have amazing stories to tell. The place is dark, cool, and historically classy. It can get crowded, so be sure to make reservations in advance. The only thing that is inconsistent here is the service, which makes me waver between 4 and 5 stars. Sometimes the service is great, and other times it could definitely be better. With all the bustling people around, it can get a bit loud here. This place is great to grab a bite or a great handcrafted cocktail. They offer a unique experimental cocktail menu that highlights drinks I haven’t seen anywhere else. They are good at making drink recommendations based on what you typically like. During the cold weather months they have Wassail, which I love to grab after walking around looking at the great Christmas lights on the river walk. The food is typical comfort tavern faire, but made with fresh and local ingredients. The meat is hormone free, and made from happy well treated animals. The burger is great, the fries DELICIOUS. The must have food item here is the house made fried pickles. They are THEBEST fried pickles I have had yet in my life. Others I bring here agree with me. Tip: They do have a late night food menu, but they don’t offer deserts after the kitchen closes.

Walking a good portion of the river walk, my friends and I were drawn to this place because of the small balcony overlooking the river. It was a great atmosphere, looking at the river taxis travel and the people walking around. We ordered, and I chose the«shrimp toast» because I had never heard of a dish quit like it. Literally one of the strangest meals I’ve had in a while, but very tasty and enjoyable. The«toast» was made of blended up shrimp, deep fried into a toast shape, topped with goat cheese and pepper jelly sauce. My friend had the bison burger and it was crazy good, I know because I ate about a quarter of it. Good service, affordable pricing, perfect portion size and a great view: made for a great meal along the river.

Happy Hour is Monday — Friday from 3pm — 7pm. $ 1 off Texas Draft Beers and $ 3 off menu cocktails and wine. There are 5 items for munching for $ 3. Best spot for drinks on the Riverwalk! Esquire Tavern is perfect if you want to get away from the tourtisy side of the Riverwalk and are tired of the margaritas. Being the oldest bar on the Riverwalk, it has character, pzazz, and funk. The inside is dark with textured rococo wallpaper and dark-leather booths that evoke a 1930’s ambiance. Magnifying glasses are also strategically placed in front of light bulbs with exposed filaments. Artsy. It can get packed on busy nights but if you can grab a seat, try one of their swanky cocktails. I can’t comment on their food but I can confidently say that Warpaint(aquavit, beet-tarragon shrub, cocchi americano, lemon, herbsaint) will be one of the best cocktails you’ll ever have.

Wow– What a great place to eat! This is a hip, cool little place that is very dark. You might think they only offer drinks– but do yourself a favor and eat here!!! We went here twice on our 5 day stay. The servers where very nice and helpful both times. They seemed genuinely happy to be there too– big plus :) There were so many good looking and interesting things on their menu– don’t be afraid to try something new! It’s all tex-mex, so everything we ordered seemed to pack a certain degree of heat. I don’t normally like spicy heat, but the food was good enough where I didn’t care. I had a moscow mule, which came in a cute, super cold copper cup. Very tasty! Both times I ordered the potato tacos. They have cilantro and onions and some spicy mix on them– so good! The hubs had the wildcat burger– it had a thick juicy piece of pineapple on it– he’s sold on that– I think we will have to put a slice of pineapple on burgers from now on~ :) We had some fried pickles which they made themselves!- yes, homemade pickles! yum. We had a few other things that I forget, but were good. There is seating on the 2nd floor overlooking the river– make sure you get reservations to sit there as it is awesome!
