Couldn’t help but notice that some reviews here are dated AFTER the ‘lockout’. Has Mongolian Wok re-opened? If anyone knows anything about the status of this place an update would be greatly appreciated. Great place for lunchtime solo sushi assortment.

They’ve been great everytime!!! We have Celiac’s in our family so it’s rare that we get to eat out. They always remember what we can’t have and take appropriate steps to ensure we don’t get sick. They even remember my kids’ names and their food preferences! The only place I’d feel comfortable letting the waitress walk around with my young children(they love to feed the fish). The all you can eat Mongolian is delicious, without fail. The Chinese selection is limited(it doesn’t bother me because I can’t eat it) but that doesn’t matter because it’s a Mongolian place, and that selection is very much worth it!!!

I know I already reviewed this place, but who knows. That being said, the floors were so sticky that it kept pulling my flip flops off. That was instantly a turn off. The best thing here is the create your own stir fry. It was actually really good! If you want that, and all you can eat of it, go here. If you want an extensive buffet, go somewhere else!

I seriously don’t know why this place has such a high rating. My husband and I were excited to try it based on everyone raving but we were more than disappointed. We were confused on exactly how the place worked. We originally wanted to try the sushi but were never handed a menu and the lady that sat us never told us about anything else besides the buffet. So we ate from the buffet which wasn’t bad. Not the best selection I’ve ever seen. Not much customer service and the dessert bar was a joke. It wasn’t until my husband hunted down a menu that we realized there’s a huge menu full of items you can order, including sushi. We won’t be back.

They are definitely ahead of any and all of their competition. We can for our first time and this definitely won’t be our last visit. All across the board, this was a wonderful experience. I strongly suggest giving this place a try! Not too mention, the sushi is fresh as well… You won’t be disappointed.

Ate here my very first day in town. Came in during lunch time and the place was pretty dead. The food that was cooked to order was fantastic. The food on the buffet was pretty disappointing. That said, we definitely have plans to go back, but we will be sticking to the grill.

Used a groupon deal at this restaurant. It was very good. We went during lunch time. The waitress sat us down quickly and explained how the Mongolian part worked. I loved the food and the sushi was the . they were freshly rolled every fifteen mins or so and it was so good. We had no complaints. We will definitely come back on our next vacation to San Antonio.

When I went it was completely empty and I was the only customer in there. The restaurant is nice and clean and the staff is extremely friendly. I ordered the shrimp in curry sauce and it was DELICIOUS. There may have been a little too much onions(in my opinion). The price was $ 8.25, but with tax it came up to $ 10.00(I ate in the restaurant). Good price. Great food. Nice staff. Pretty neat restaurant.

So I’ve been here several times and each has been pretty good. It’s a Mongolian BBQ/Chinese buffet. They’re friendly but always seem offended whenever I tell them I would like to mix my own sauces in my bowl. They also don’t keep their meats or veggies on ice so they just sit out in the open air. The meat isn’t frozen either like it would be at hu hot. Just doesn’t seem that safe.

What a great find. We were running late after doing touristy things around San Antonio. My son wanted Chinese food, and This place had good reviews. It was a cold night, and they were looking to close early. We showed up as they were starting to clean up. They had closed the buffet but offered us Mongolian stir fry. Instead of being put out by late customers, they made us feel like family. They loaded us down with appetizers, sushi and even dessert in addition to the stir fry. Then when the bill came, it was much less than expected. If we lived here, we’d eat here all the time. As it is, we’ll make it a point to stop back whenever we’re in town.

They made my stir fried rice dish out of white sauce instead of soy sauce to make it wheat gluten free and they made my sushi roll with shrimp, avocado and cream cheese all without any soy sauce on it either just for me and brought it to my table. It was a pleasant dining experience. They were very nice to us. We will dine here again in the future!

a friend recommended this restaurant/buffet and i have been there 4 times. if you like mongolian barbecue this is the place to go. their ingredients are fresh. you have a choice of seafood or beef, chicken and pork. i also like their options of fresh vegetables and noodles. they also have a small selection of traditional Chinese dishes, sushi rolls, salad bar and soups. you can also order a la carte(the menus are by the register when you come in.) the staff is very efficient. if you are a newcomer they will give you a tour of what they have to offer they will also help you to CREATE your own combination of sauces for your mongolian barbecue. the deserts are standard for an asian restaurant. may be i will try them the next time if i am not too full … give them a try. they have plenty of choices for everyone…

If you pass this place over thinking it’s just like every other lame buffet in SA, you’re really missing out. But if you love sushi or Mongolian food, and appreciate a convenient and pretty location with great service and awesome pricing, this is a place you’ll fall in love with. BF and I went here with a Groupon this past weekend– the unobtrusive exterior in the corner of a strip mall didn’t exactly get our hopes up, but as we entered, we were seated by a cheerful and polite hostess right next to an indoor koi pond and an aquarium. We were immediately asked for our drink order, provided with directions, and sent on our way to the food. Sushi is provided in both rolls and nigiri-style, and rumor has it that you can place an order for a specific roll and they’ll make it for you. I didn’t have to try that, since there was plenty ready and I just picked from what was already on display. Tasty, fresh, and little or no use of cream cheese, which is a plus for the health-conscious who may already feel like they’re making a bad decision by being in a buffet. Also, honorable mention of the seaweed salad– it’s a great accompaniment to the sushi and I practically consumed half the dish all by myself: it’s fresh, crunchy, and healthy. There’s a small area of traditional Chinese-buffet-style options: lemon chicken, beef and broccoli, general Tsos, eggrolls, crab Rangoon, etc. and they’re about average quality. But the highlight here is clearly the Mongolian. BF was the brave one to use this area, and it’s set up just like other Mongolian places: select your meats(any combination and amount of fish filet, calamari, squid, shrimp, scallops, chicken, beef, pork, etc– literally any meat you care for) and veggies(not gonna list them all, anything you can stir fry) — and then there are a variety of sauces. There’s a sign of suggested combos for those who want to make their own tasty sauce, but the staff are super helpful at mixing something up for you. Our helpful server combined who knows what and made something savory and garlicky with just a hint of a kick, and it was perfect! Walk the bowl over to the grill area, and they’ll cook it up and bring it out to you in mere minutes. The single thing we noticed was missing was soup– we didn’t see any soup area or options available. And for those who bring their kids to buffets just to eat pizza and hamburgers, there wasn’t any of that either– but that’s a good thing, IMO. All around, food was tasty and the correct temperature, and there was plenty of variety for both sushi and Mongolian lovers alike. Service continued to be stellar throughout our entire visit, and we will definitely be returning to this gem, with or without a groupon!

from the handful of purely wonderful Unilocal reviews about this place, i was excited to try it out, especially after coming across a livingsocial deal of theirs. the reviews made mongolian wok & sushi bar sound like completely different from the typical asian buffet with their mediocre, usually mislabeled selections that sit under heat lamps for hours and their always-terrible desserts. san antonio has a quite a few of these and although they usually have a huge selection, the food is okay at best. mongolian wok & sushi bar sounded much more promising though, with their all-you-can-eat mongolian stir-fry AND sushi, and their website also seemed to boast the typical chinese food selections you’d find at any other asian buffet. given that their website was advertising a grand opening, i figured it might be nicer and newer than the typical chinese buffet. nope. upon walking in, there was no one at the front to seat us. despite it being a bright and sunny day out, the dim fluorescent lighting made the whole place look like it was closing down. as we were finally seated, we walked past a fish tank where the water looked brown and the fish were barely swimming. we decided to start off with the mongolian stir-fry and found the ingredients interspersed among the cooked food in the buffet lineup. i felt like it woud have been more intuitive for all the raw ingredients and sauces to be in one place, but that’s not how they had it set up. rather than the large bowls that most mongolian bbq places provide for ingredients, all they had available were the regular smallish buffet plates and some small bowls for sauce. if you want to make a decent-sized stir fry, it’ll be difficult to get all the ingredients to fit on the plate. i managed to balance a final selection of veggies on top and proceeded to the sauce section to decide what i wanted to conjure up. two seconds later, an employee ran up to me and asked me what kind of sauce i liked. i had just glanced up at the recipe cards(where they tell you how many ladles of each sauce to mix together to create the listed sauce recipe) and hadn’t even looked down at the sauces they had available. «uhmm. i was just looking to see what…» «WHATSAUCEYOUWANT?!» she interrupted, as if she didn’t think i heard her question the first time. «uhh, something not spicy?» «YOUSAYSPICY??» «not spicy, please» «OKAY, NOODLESAUCEFORYOU,» she declared, placing a couple ladles of a mystery sauce labeled ‘noodle sauce’ into my bowl. she then added oil, garlic, and some other stuff — all at the speed of light. i’m not sure what else she put in there… she then hurried me to the stir-fry station. there was no one else in the buffet line area and so i wasn’t holding anyone up, but felt super rushed. a minute later, my husband went up to the sauce station with his creation, and another employee ran over. repeat previous scenario. neither of our stir-fry dishes turned out that great. they were oversauced, overly greasy, and bland. i wanted to go make another dish with my own sauce, but i was kinda afraid of the crazy sauce ladies. i ventured over to the sushi bar and picked out a good variety. the chinese food section was tiny and disappointing, with only 6 or so options, all of which were the same golden brown color, either doused in sauce or deep-fried. i did grab some seaweed salad, which although too wet and vinegar-soaked, was still decent. my first couple bites of sushi were okay, but it just kept getting worse. their fish quality was no bueno. disappointing mainly because they tacked on sushi to their name and i guess it gave me higher expectations. both of us kinda picked at our food(the chinese food wasn’t good either), and didn’t even feel like trying any of the fruits or desserts(they only had 2 – 3 options anyway and they all looked like they were attacked by a swarm of children). during our entire meal, a toddler at the table adjacent to ours played with a crank-up doll that played fur elise really high-pitched at 3x the speed it should be. as soon as the music stopped, the dad would crank it up again. this went on non-stop. a waitress came by and asked if we were ready for the check. as she came to collect our credit card, she pointed at my plate and asked me if my food tasted bad(i had half the plate of stir-fry leftover mainly because i was really full. but it also wasn’t the greatest food. i hate wasting food though, so if i could, i would have eaten it). awkward… i told her that it was just too much food. i don’t think she understood what i was saying though. or maybe she did, but either way, she looked super angry and annoyed and walked away. sorry, lady! to top off the terrible restaurant experience, both of us felt sick after eating here. judging from the number of people at the restaurant(on a weekend/holiday — mother’s day lunch), i’m guessing their food on the buffet line doesn’t get replaced often, especially their raw stuff. disappointed…

So i have to say that i’ve been a little disappointed with Asian food since i moved to San Antonio, but Mongolian Wok and Sushi Bar just hits the spot for me. We found his place on a whim and for $ 10.99(dinner), it’s really kind of a steal. That atmosphere of the restaurant is quite nice; large with plenty of seating, and a nice fountain with fish in the front. There were people there that were clearly regulars, and I must say that we’ll probably be regulars as well too! They have a mongolian wok where you get to pick out all your ingredients and sauces and they’ll cook it for you on the gigantic wok(just like at Genghis Khan). They had a huge array of ingredients to chose from: shrimp, beef, fish, chicken mussels, squid, all types of vegetables, several different kinds of noodles, and an entire array of sauces. My husband and I didn’t really know what we were doing when it came to the sauces, but the waitress was so helpful and so gracious. She really is the star of the show over there. She noticed us lurking in the sauce department, so she came over, asked what we liked, and ladled up a perfect portion of each sauce to create a personalized combination for our individual tastes and for the ingredients that we chose for each of our plates. I think i had something in the range of terikayi, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and cooking wine. She came back to our table afterward to ask if we liked our sauce choices and she clearly indicated that she’d try to remember our specific combinations for our return! Impressive. The allure of this place is that it’s a mongolian wok AND a sushi place AND a Chinese buffet place. The sushi, shockingly, wasn’t half bad. The waitress even said that they’d specially make any roll that you wanted as well(with the ingredients they had on hand). I didn’t do that since i was perfectly fine with my selection of dragon roll, crunchy roll, and the tuna. Way better than China Harbor for sure. The Chinese food seemed to be a tad lacking… but honestly after all the sushi and mongolian wok, i was too stuffed to try much anyway. My husband had a few samplings and he said they weren’t half-bad, but nothing overly special. They had all the generic Chinese food that you’d want as well as a small array of deserts and side pastas. The Mongolian Wok and the sushi were my big faves and i would hit up those spots several times in our short evening. Oh! It should be noted that there were also big kettles of hot soup and we loved all of them! Egg drop soup, sweet/sour soup, seafood soup. My husband especially loved the sweet/sour soup. So honestly, for $ 10.99 for a buffet with real sushi and a real mongolian wok and a exceptionally lovely waitress, you really can’t lose by giving this place a try.

This best hidden secret at 281 and Bitters(actually Heimer and Bitters tucked in the back of the shopping center by Clicks). Excellent oriental cusuine for the price. $ 8.99 buffett. Make your own Mongolian Plate with their fresh ingredients! All the kids really enjoyed it. The sushi was good and came with the buffett. We will go back.

It’s kind of a hodge podge Asian buffet, but it works. There is the Mongolian Wok buffet, where you pick out your ingredients and sauce and they cook it up for you. I would say, to perfection. The ingredients were very fresh and I was very pleased with the selection. Then when I got my plate brought out to our table, I was very impressed with the fact that the calamari was soft and not chewy. My wife thought I was playing with my food, but I was checking the flexibility of the calamari and the it wiggled nicely on my chop sticks. If this was the only thing they had here we would come back just for this.(Try the garlic sauce.) Then there was also the Chinese buffet, although it may not be a wide assortment of choices, they have their bases covered. I liked how the Crab Rangoon was stuffed, I mean stuffed. There was some kind of shrimp cavichi that was very good, and there was a calamari salad that was quite impressive too. The Sushi Bar has selections of individual pieces to provide an assortment on your plate. I kind of like it this way rather than having to get a whole roll. Or if you want they will make a roll for you of your choice. The selection may have been rather generic, but they were all very good. Oh and lastly there is the price. Are you ready for this? $ 10.99 per person. Can’t beat it.(Update, I think it’s 12 bucks now, that was a grand opening price.) So all in all, we will definitely go back here. (As of the post date they just opened and took over the location from a failed Mexican joint, which I posted about last year, so I hope they can beat the previous tenants track record, I would like to see this place stay open.)
