This place used to be great.. in the past!!! Now, unfortunately it is just cheap food wih horrible service. I used to be a server so I try to be extra nice and understanding, but these guys here are just bad. After three consecutive bad visits I feel like I can say it and ask myself why I went back. We made a quick stop and asked for«1» roll, guy comes out with two of the exact thing… I had clearly told him we would share one roll. Guy takes off mad and never comes back with sauces or drink refills. I had to wave him down for our ticket as we needed water or something but no luck. Finally we get our ticket and he sends receipt with another server when he is just standing leaning on the bar doing nothing. Food was bland, service was horrible and no refills even for water.

I asked a colleague while at a conference in San Antonio for some solid sushi joints while here in her home town. She quickly responds«Goro’s»…unfortunately the first thing that came to mind was my college days of playing endless amounts of «Mortal Kombat» and wasting all my foos ball winnings on that quarter suck… Needless to say, the old adage applies«what’s in a name?!» What’s in a name indeed… I decided to go check out the place, not in the best part of town, but, that kinda of stuff doesn’t really bother me, but, be forewarned if that kinda stuff bothers you. Anyway, if you dig the proverbial sushi joint adjacent to a karaōke place… then, killer score. When you walk in to this unassuming place, its got some retro style architecture and only four seats at the sushi bar but comfy booths. I chose to sit in the back so I could check out the patrons and explore the local SA culture of sushi diners. All types man… but the wait staff was nice, menu is rather large and filled with roll upon roll of options and fillers and toppings, oh my! I opted for just the middle sashimi plate, which comes with 34 pieces of freshness. Further, I ask my regular Q/A for sushi — «do you have escolar». The waiter looked at me and leaned in… that is an off the menu choice grade option, but we have it. I often find it interesting when sushi joints leave off arguably the best cut of fish one might experience. It’s like being«in the know» for a small population of a sushi club of sorts. Veteran foodie tip — Always ask for escolar. That not withstanding, he provided me four big chunks of the meaty yet creamy goodness of the«super white tuna» along with wonderfully flavored salmon, ahi, white fish, octopus and halibut. I asked to keep the mackerel off the plate as it’s the only fish I don’t dig. I also got an eel roll… to which, I forget the name, but I love anything with eel in it. Plus, the meal came with the standard Japanese salad with ginger dressing and miso soup… score! As far as the other rolls I saw flying out of the sushi prep… there is one massive roll called the«O roll» comically enormous and multi layered topped with an obscene amount of crab«salad» and stuffed with other, well, stuff. I saw these peeps just ordering these up sometimes in triplicate. Me, I prefer straight up sashimi, but peeps seemed to dig this thing to the nth degree. Check out the place and I saw they have some good daily lunch specials too… Only reason it’s not a five star is location, but fish quality is there.

Goros used to be my favorite sushi restaurant. I moved away from San Antonio and was really looking forward to eating here since I’m back on a business trip. I was very disappointed. The menus were disgusting. It will make a huge difference if they just wiped them down with disinfectant wipes. I was actually grossed out and washed my hands after I placed my order. My boss received flat soda and the service was subpar. Now let’s get to the sushi– yuck! It was a GIANTROLLOFGREASYRICE! I have been going to this restaurant for years and I did recognize some of the workers, but I am not sure if they switched the chef of not! The Oral Design Roll was my favorite, it used to have the look that it was FLASHFRIED. The Oral Design Roll I received last night looked deep fried, even the rice was greasy. I had to use a knife and fork because it was so big(& I can use chopsticks)… I feel like they are assimilating to this«Texas Culture» big and greasy, when really this is a Japanese restaurant… keep the food fresh and light. If I wanted greasy and heavy I would have gone to ChaChos. Needless to say, I will not be back. Definitely disappointed in the direction this restaurant is going. Two thumbs down.

This is a great place and the sushi rolls are huge! My oder came with a salad and soup. Very tasty all around! I give it four stars because the rolls are so big that it takes two bites per piece and the rolls falls apart. For some this might be a good problem to have, but a new timer may not have a good experience.

I went back to this place a second time to male sure the first visit wasn’t a fluke. The second visit was just as good as the first. The sushi rolls are HUGE!!! And very fresh. The staff is very attentive, friendly and fast and there is a large selection on the menu as well as daily specials. You should see the sushi/rolls menu!!! OMG, i think i found my sushi heaven…

Sushi is something you eat in one bite. Godzilla couldn’t fit a piece of Goro’s sushi in his mouth. Even if he could, he wouldn’t want to. All you taste is rice. The rice to fish ratio is, conservatively, 10 to 1. When I removed a piece of tuna from the pound of rice it was strong and off-putting. In addition, the gyoza was oily and flavorless. And to cap it off you get a fortune cookie. At a Japanese restaurant.

Well I’m going to just right into. I took my friend from Tokyo here for a belated birthday lunch and let me just say I wasn’t impressed by the outside of the building not the inside décor. My first impressions of Goros Sushi was this is and old building for sure in an ok area of town. The inside of the restaurant had very dark lighting and older décor as well. It also has a sign which states seat yourself which is fine however I would think to the employees it might be infusing not knowing who just came in and who didn’t. My friend and I choose to sit in one of their booths which I have to say was comfortable however again it was dark and the single light in the booth was super bright and right in your face/eyes. Once we sat down it took about 5 minutes for someone to come over and offer us a menu and take our drink order which was a little long seeing as a group of employees were standing to thrift of us talking in a circle. Our drink order was then taken after waiting for the waiter and my friend and I both ordered hot green tea which I have to say was pretty good not and bitter I rather enjoyed Goros just for the tea. Next after taking a moment to look over the menu which has many items and is descriptive I ordered the rainbow roll and the kappa maki rolls. My friend ordered the tekka maki and the sushi regular. When waiting for the order you get a small salad that has a nice and light Asian dressing and miso soup which you can’t go wrong with. Next the rolls came out and I can say I wasn’t impressed at all. Yes the rolls are huge but it’s because there is about a double layer of rice compared to any other sushi restaurant I’ve been to in town and most of the ginger that came with the sushi was dried out as well. The fish did taste fresh and the portion size of the slicing were good as well. My friend said both her rolls were good but she could tell it wasn’t a very authentic Japanese sushi. Overall it wasn’t a terrible experience and ok to try but next time I would go to a different sushi restaurant.

Really good and the prices were reasonable. I had the charshi bowl one of the biggest best priced I’ve had. My wife had O role, it was huge and really tasty. The parking lot was small. The staff was nice and it was clean. I would go again.

So I’ve been to Goro’s many times when I lived in San Antonio. Often my siblings want to go there when we get together. I like the oral design and Las Vegas roll. You can’t beat happy hour sushi rolls. Very good and in my opinion cheap eats for what you get. Go here, you won’t be disappointed.

So bad. Can I give it 0 stars? Service for 3 took more than hour at lunch. We finally had to tell the manager we had to leave. He SCREAMED at us in front of ENTIRE restaurant, «FINELEAVEANDNEVERCOMEBACK!» Wow. We were stunned. Other people actually left after that. ok, done, never going back. Chef told us on way out, «the manager is an a**hole, that’s why waiters and cooks will not work here.» Clearly.

I have heard so many good things about this restaurant and had really high hopes for the sushi. I have attempted to come two previous times but they were so busy the wait was almost an hour long. I see that as a good sign, which only built the hype up in my mind. This time I went on an off peak night and was able to get seating right away. The wait staff was fast, attentive and polite. The sushi menu seemef to have a good selection, other then them not having albacore which in my mind is a staple at any sushi restaurant. Me and my wife ordered three rolls and when they came they where massive, easily two to three times bigger then the average sushi roll. The presentation was good. They were dripping in toppings galore(on a side note next time you go ask for the spicy panzu sauce it was delicious). As I started to digg into the massive rolls it quickly became apparent that the majority of the bulk was rice, enough rice in fact to carry a small asian village through winter. The rice wall was almost an inch thick on all rolls. That in my mind is a huge NONO. Good flavors were present but the ridiculous amount of rice made the rolls as a whole bland and the flavors muted. I am hoping that this was an off night because I really want to like this place. I will return again and hopefully next time I will not be met by a white avalanche of rice.

I can see why people really like this place. I mean one roll is enough for one person which is awesome and they definitely have a wow factor. However, you better really like rice because that’s majority of the roll. It’s 80% rice. I mean I like sushi rice but not that much… I could make a whole second roll out of the left over rice. I got the O roll. It’s a lot of imitation crab as well. If I come back I’m asking easy EASY rice. Other than that, there was quick service and they were nice to split our check. I’ll have to try sushi next time to see the quality of fish cus I barely had any in my roll.

My friend recommended this place because they are known for their huge sushi rolls! They weren’t kidding either. One order comes in about 8 pieces but don’t worry these pieces are huge and topped with various toppings(my fav is the spicy crab salad). Each roll comes with miso soup and a small garden salad with a tangy peanut dressing. The place is a pretty decent size and can get busy. I didn’t really see big tables for big group parties but I’m sure they can accommodate and put tables together. Karaōke bar next door for those who want to have fun after dinner. Parking lot is a bit small and can get packed during dinner hours. Service is good and staff is nice. Remember, don’t have eyes bigger than your stomach! Rolls are on steroids here.

I’d never heard about this place until a friend of a friend of a coworker recommended it after falling into a Sushi Zushi rut. The place was lowkey, food was fresh, portions huge, and wait staff were great. We ate like kings with a pauper’s budget.

Make sure you have a big appetite when you come here because these rolls are HUGE! The bang for the buck is on point, too. Make sure to try out the O-Roll, Letty Roll, Three Amigos Roll, UT Roll, and their sashimi bowl. Amazing! Complimentary soup and salad prior to the meal and fortune cookie after are always welcome. ^.^

Love their happy hour menu not for their drinks but for their sushi! Great deal! Their sashimi and nigiri are always fresh, service is impeccable and happy hour sushi? Can’t beat that. I’ve been here quite a bit, recently I ordered the Ikura(salmon roe) and it didn’t taste right. Think they marinated it too long in the sake. Ikura is my go to sushi but last time I didn’t finish it because I didn’t like the flavor. The fried oyster appetizer is consistently good. Miso soup is usally luke warm which isn’t desirable and their rice sometimes can be a little undercooked. I’m a sushi snob, you would know this if you’ve read my previous sushi reviews. So, I’ll give this spot 4 out of 5 stars. I really do enjoy going here for their sushi happy hour and good service.

Bring a long time Goro’s fan, it hurts to give them a 3 star review. We have been here many a times with friends and bday parties and alway have been satisfied. Today was a different story. Came for my gf’s bday dinner. Ordered one Hot tea and one sake bomb. Hot charged for 2 teas and got 2 sake bombs. Although did receive them both. Ordered my favorite texas roll and alamo roll. Both of them were good. However Our Server let them sit for atleast 5 minutes before making it to our table. Miso soup was ok. Don’t like the new peanut salad dressing either. Overall eh experience this time around.

Went here for a late lunch. There weren’t many people in the restaurant, so we didn’t have to wait to be seated. Decent sushi and decent service. Can’t say I was very impressed, but I didn’t hate it either. Probably wouldn’t go here again if I had the choice, because I have had better sushi elsewhere.

Goro’s Sushi assures that you’ll leave full. We popped in on a Friday evening and the entire lot was full. Goro’s is located right next to Dad’s Karaōke, know that parking can be atrocious by weeks end. We walked in and just waited, there wasn’t a host or a sign-in, you had to look for a table on your own. Finally, we found a booth and were gifted with a wonderful waiter, he was attentive and quite the comedian. We ordered appetizers and three rolls, know that you are served complimentary miso soup and salad with each order. The chicken yakimeshi was perfection, we really went to town with this rice. The gyoza looked good but was on the soggy side and the filling was bland. The rolls are intimidating and come with loads of crab, our waiter told us that they only use imitation crab because fresh crab would be too expensive, bummer. I didn’t care for any of the rolls, my Philly had hardly any salmon and I could only bear one piece of each of the O-roll and Oral Design roll. I left feeling underwhelmed but will continue to return for their nicely priced happy hour! I would recommend going to Goro’s during happy hour to sample what they have to offer.
