We didn’t have to wait for a table. In fact, we were the only party in the restaurant. It bode in our favor, because our meal came out tout de suite. We started off with the wood fired bread. All of my dining companions were raving about it. Frankly, I thought that if they would have served it warm; it would have been more worth the raves. I did love the honey Apple salad. It was my most favorite dish of the night. The dressing, and toasted almonds worked so well together. That salad, by itself, is worthy of five stars. When it came to the entrees, I have to say that I was disappointed to find a significantly pared-down menu. There wasn’t even a whisper of short ribs on any of the listed dishes! And that was what drew me to the restaurant in the first place! The BBQ chicken pizza I ordered was fine. But nothing to write home(or Unilocal) about. That was the general consensus among all four of us, in regard to our main dishes. Two of us has donuts for dessert. Another person had the bread pudding, and the final individual had a muffin. The muffin received the most votes for being the best dessert. Am I the only one that thinks that is a bit weird? Oh well, it’s the truth. In the future, I’d go back to From Scratch. But only if the wait at the Copper Onion is too long.

Bingo!!! Okay, this place was average the last few times we went in, but this last visit hit the spot. The pizza was yummy(we asked for it to be cooked a little less than normal so it wasn’t as charred as normal & it hit the spot), the burger was one of the best I’ve ever had(and that’s huge coming from me)… cooked a perfect medium with blue cheese and bacon and the best fries I’ve had in quite a while. The bread pudding was so so… Not my cup of tea, but others may enjoy it. Great service, cool atmosphere and a fun time. You have redeemed yourself and we will be back.(Hopefully you will have donuts for dessert on our next visit).

Not you average pizza place! This restaurant reminds me of Osteria Marco in Denver. It has a very trendy but the quality of food lives up to the hype. I suggest the mushroom pizza. I love that stone oven is also visible from the counter area as well. What I like most about the pizza was the super thin crust, thinly sliced mushrooms, and the balsamic glaze to just bring it all together. Their Charcuterie and Risotto cake was also really tasty as well. The service could be better though. We walked in and it took about 10 – 15 minutes for staff to realize we needed service(there more than just a couple walking around). Otherwise, I will be going back!

The food is ok, but overpriced. My burger and fries came to $ 15.10 plus tip I was at $ 18 and no drink. The service wasn’t great. The whole experience lasted an hour. The atmosphere was very unpleasant. This place attracts the kind of Millennials that nightmares are made of: east coast, entitled frat boys using the F-word every sentence. I won’t be returning.

I’m not sure I’ve had a better gourmet burger. Definitely go here for dinner(I feel like the Chefs at lunch are hit or miss). I’m pretty obsessed with the Scratch Burger, Honey Apple Salad, & margherita pizza. My go to meal is: The Scratch Burger w/a side salad instead of fries and a side of their housemade bbq sauce. The burger has an amazing sauce already on it and it tastes like it has a hint of cinnamon. YUM. I’m a sauce person for sure. What I love is, they truly care about what’s in their food. They use Creminelli meats and other local farms to provide the best meats and cheese available making it one of the few restaurants in SLC that I’ll eat meat or dairy at. They also use organic hard spring wheat berries to produce flour for their pizzas. If you get a chance to try a vanilla bourbon donut, do it! Absolutely love this place, but bring a jacket… it gets cold.

Our first time in SLC, we went to this restaurant. I recommend this to anyone for a unique selection of beers and delicious food. We shared the Mushroom Pizza in my party, and I had The Egg Burger. Both were very well seasoned and felt so fresh eating them. Loved the addition of arugula on the pizza. Also, the salt portions on each dish were perfect. Our waiter was very helpful after seeing we weren’t from here. Even talked to us about where were from. The food came out fairly fast, even on a crowded night. This place deserves 5 stars for food and service.

I have been trying to come here for months and I was excited to give them a try. My husband and I were both disappointed. First off the service was poor. Our waiter had greasy hair that he kept pushing out of his face. He came to take our order and to give us the bill and that was it. Someone else brought our food, no one asked if everything was okay and I had to flag someone else down to get a refill on drinks for the whole table. I had the salami pizza. The description said it came with speck, which is a delicious Italian cured meat. It was definitely more like a regular ham and it was soooo salty. The crust of the pizza is large and was brushed in oil then covered in tons of salt. The crust is usually my favorite part, but after two bites I wanted to gag. I spent 15 bucks on a pizza that I didn’t want to eat more than a few bites of and no one else wanted it either. My husband got the bacon blue cheese burger and the meat and bun were good, but again the bacon and sauce were ridiculously salty. The fries and housemade ketchup were good, but that was about it. This place is definitely not worth the hype or the price, I won’t be back. There are much better burgers and Italian pizzas out there, which is basically all you can get at from scratch.

Really great menu and service. We had a pizza and a salad and it was delicious. Fresh, clean, and modern design. We had a party of 8 and they made space for us quickly. Would Definitely recommend for a «farm to table» feel.

This is a hidden gem here in Salt Lake City. A nice little restaurant that’s tucked into a alley way with little traffic around. The décor here is very simple but yet welcoming. If you come here on the weekday during lunch time you’ll notice many people sitting here in work attire. For how busy this place is the food gets served pretty fast. Their menu is very simple, but they are all made«from scratch». Their scratch burger is super yummy. The patty is super juicy, bun is flavorful and even their fries seem to be freshly cut(not like those store bought ones). My friend told me that their pizza is super delicious. There was a few things that didn’t really click me on my visit to give it a 5 star rating. Like the length it took the waitress to take our order But I would totally come back again for the food.

Service was meh. They took a long time to take our orders. Not sure how service is allocated but three servers checked on the same table on the other side of the room but none came to our table even when we made eye contact. We just had to wait. and wait. and wait. Unlike what another Unilocal review said, they actually don’t validate parking. Now, the food: Scratch burger — this is a solid burger. I’d recommend. It looks quite large but it’s actually not bad once you take a bite into it. Simple ingredients. Spicy calabrese pizza– the cheese and the red sauce were phenomenal, but the actual calabrese was not quite there. Would probably have enjoyed it more if they used bunches of spicy Italian sausages instead.

If the length is daunting, check out«TL;DR» below! From Scratch is one of those places that I had heard about from other foodies for years… but surprisingly, I had never made the move to stop in. This was decidedly rectified on blustery Friday night, a night where I didn’t personally want to cook, but was very much in the mood for something home-cooked. I had heard great things about From Scratch’s home made pasta, I honestly, having it was one of the main reasons we were going to stop in. It was a let down when we was told that they no longer had it on the menu. I wonder why this decision was made… as it seems pasta is always a clear winner, especially when it’s home made. I came in with the vision of myself eating the Pesto Alfredo, so my hopes were a little dashed when I had to settle for pizza and salad. But by the end of my meal, the disappointment had completely vanished. Their pizza was amazing. It takes a bit longer to get out to your table, but it’s well worth the wait. We each decided to start with our own separate salad [trying the Roasted Beet and Honey Apple ones: both of them were so flavorful and excellent. They are very much at the top of my list for salads], and to share a pizza between the three of us. The Mushroom pizza was decided upon. I will admit that I was hesitant at first for this one… I had a great debate in my mind … if we got the Mushroom pizza, I’d have to deal with Mushrooms, but, on the plus side, I’d also get to enjoy caramelized onions. Caramelized onions touch my soul in a certain way, so in the end, the they solidified my decision to accept Mushrooms into my night. With a bunch of arugula on top of the pizza, the presentation was absolutely scrumptious. I would put From Scratch’s pizza near the very top of my «Best SLC Pizza» list. This was also a case in which I didn’t even mind that I was consuming a ton of mushrooms. I am not a fan of mushrooms… at all, but there wasn’t a single one left on my plate. Throughout munching on pizza, I internally regretted the decision for all of us to share… it was something I could have easily consumed well into the night! I will very certainly be back for another round. I’d say the prices here are fairly higher than other places you can find in Salt Lake, but also, it’s a different level of food. I never mind paying a little more for amazing and healthy foods, ESPECIALLY when everything is made completely in house. So with that being considered, I’m totally fine with the prices at From Scratch. I do have to say that this is the coldest restaurant I’ve ever been in. This is not hyperbole. There was a little bit of relief with that moment of first walking in from the icy wintery blasts, but as soon as we were seated, it became apparent that we may have been able to get warmer walking around for a while outside. I’m usually a pretty poor judge of if something is cold or not — I’m cold for most of the time — but both my eating companions were also freezing. I had to keep my big, puffy winter jacket on the entire time we ate, which I was not a great fan of. I noticed that surrounding guests even tried to move their tables around in a chance to find a warmer area to sit. Maybe it was just a one off, but if you’re coming during the Winter season, I suggest you leave on your heavy jacket. Maybe bring a hat. A pair of gloves or two TL;DR: Though the selection of pastas is lacking on the menu, the flavor and perfection of From Scratch’s pizza and salads sure isn’t! Mushroom lovers: Try the Mushroom Pizza! Non-Mushroom Lovers: Be a little adventurous and try the Mushroom Pizza! [However, I do understand if you don’t… there are other great selections too]. Prices are high, but worth the quality of food you’re getting. Overall, both the Salads and Pizzas here stacked up to being on my list of «Top Favs» for SLC. Returning is a necessity, but so is full winter attire while sitting inside.

Overall, big thumbs up all around! Décor was very thoughtful and lovely. It really actually added to my experience. Quick, flawless turnover during a busy lunch hour, but didn’t feel rushed at all. Service was incredibly friendly. I went with a group that included a chef and so we got to order almost everything on the menu — perk! The bread with apple butter was probably my favorite thing, but the mushroom pizza was outstanding. I didn’t taste the wedge salad, but we had two other salads that were both equally fantastic, Really nice butternut soup. The risotto cake was interesting, not usually my thing, but I enjoyed it.

My first visit here was during the Unilocal Bakery Tour, where David, the owner, and Christie, a pasty chef, demonstrated how they make their square donuts. Upon entering, you are greeting with a slight smell of wood burning(which I love) mixed with baked goods. The atmosphere is warm and inviting but modern and very clean. The lighting, plants, décor and layout are spot on. David started with some background about the place and I love that they are the only place in SLC to make their own wood fired bread. Yum! 3 pines coffee owners stopped in to tell us about their opening in the space adjacent to the restaurant, which is where you can pick up From Scratch baked goods. Sounds like you’ll be able to order and enjoy coffee beverages in the restaurant which is great. Oh, but no decaf and whole milk only. Sorry you decaf-soy milk-sugar free-latte people. :) I love cooking and especially baking because it’s a wonderful blend of art and science. David and co. had quite a bit of testing to get the perfect square donut. From adjusting for elevation to the best shortening and frying oil to use, nothing is assumed. Flavors of donuts include(not all): Apple spice(made with fresh apple), Fresh orange w chocolate ganache, vanilla bourbon, Coconut w chocolate, and Coffee. Glaze is made fresh daily and one full vanilla bean is used in each batch of glaze for vanilla bourbon donuts. Yes please. Unfortunately I didn’t get to try a donut(oh the humanity) but they graciously gave me a plate of white chocolate cranberry scones and blueberry muffin, both were good. I definitely want to return to try other items on the menu soon! Thanks From Scratch and Jeffrey for organizing.

I came here for lunch on a cold, rainy/overcast kind of day. My first impression of the place was very positive as soon as I walked in. I was immediately greeted and shown to my table, quickly followed with being brought a glass of water. I ended up ordering the risotto cake and butternut squash soup. I was impressed with both and definitely recommend them! The soup is a little on the sweet side so just be aware of that. I will definitely be back to try out this place for dinner!

Mixed emotions on this place. Went with coworkers and ordered some items to share. First the highlights: HONEYAPPLESALAD $ 7: The spicy bite of the arugula, crunch of the almonds and apples, creaminess of the ricotta, and sweetness of the honey vinaigrette were a sublime combination. I declare this salad the winner of lunch. SCRATCHBURGER $ 13: The burger was very good. Quality handmade beef patty cooked perfectly medium rare and so juicy. Delicious Bun, shoestring onions, smoked cheddar and a little touch of some white mayo-like sauce.(Better not be that special Unilocaler sauce.) Served with awesome fries that were tasty, even though they were not hot when they arrived at the table. It takes a damn good fry to taste good cold. WHITEOUTPIZZA $ 12: Lets start out by saying the semolina dusted thin crust cooked in the wood fired pizza oven was perfect. I am not a hug fan of white pizzas but they did a decent job with balancing the Alfredo, Ricotta, Parmesan Reggiano, and Mozzarella. It was not too heavy or rich. There were plentiful amounts of roasted garlic cloves sprinkled on the pizza for good measure. Now the lowlights: QUICHESPECIAL $ 12: Who serves their quiche cold? Yuck. Oddly enough this cold quiche(and the adjacent table as well) received this dish about 10 minutes later then all the other dishes. Why would cold quiche take 10 minutes longer to plate up then the other cooked items? I may never know. We sent the quiche back to be warmed up but it was still cold inside. And to top it off… the quiche was not that good. Meh… I declare this dish the loser of lunch. My first impression upon walking in here was tainted by this off-putting musty mildew like smell. Not really what you are looking for when dining. Additionally, This place is too hard to get to and makes coming back unlikely. Parking is a nightmare. They do not validate at any nearby garages. Settebello and Copper Onion have better pizza and burgers nearby and are much easier to get to.

This is a great location … The restaurant has a good vibe and I love that little alley behind Gallivan Plaza with the twinkle lights. It’s a fun spot to hang out and enjoy dinner. Our service was pretty slow but our waiter was really friendly. The food was amazing. We tried a variety of things. The warm house made bread and jam is a MUST. The burger with the egg on top is one of the best I’ve ever had. So flavorful and so juicy and just so, so delicious. We also tried the white pizza which was very good. The crust is the perfect amount of crispy. We had chocolate mousse for dessert, rich and delicious. Overall it was a great experience and we loved our meal.

I didn’t technically dine inside of the restaurant during my most recent visit, but From Scratch was offering a limited menu at the Gallivan Center this past Tuesday for Big Band Night. I was hoping that the prices would be comparable to some of the food trucks, but it wasn’t. $ 16 for a slightly bland burger didn’t really float my boat, but I enjoyed the mushroom pizza I had(also $ 16). It was a tasty, generous portion that could easily fill 2 people.

This is a great place for lunch. For a second there it looked like a scene out of Walking Dead because it was 2PM on a Thursday and Gallivan Plaza was deserted. We shared the restaurant with only one other couple. Once we were sure that the zombie threat was almost nil we settled into the mismatched chairs and reclaimed wood tables that complemented the Edison bulb light fixtures that have become a staple of any hipster restaurant. All jokes aside I must say the interior was truly impressive and neatly distributed in a nostalgic way. Our party of three started off with the Wood Fired Bread and Honey Apple Salad. The bread came with their homemade crème fraîche and peach seasonal jam. The bread had a thick crust and soft chewy middle just like your mom’s would if she made artisanal bread in her free time. This was a great app and could easily satisfy 4 – 5 people. The salad was also a winner with a sweet honey vinaigrette dressing, ricotta and some fantastic candied almond slices. The salad was weighed down a little by the combination of the amount of dressing and the ricotta and might have been better served with some feta instead. We followed up the apps with the award winning Scratch Burger and Fennel Sausage Pizza. This was a big juicy burger with great flavor and a unique bun. The thin crust wood fired pizza was the star of the show. The sausage wasn’t greasy and the crust was almost as good as the pie itself. The fennel served to cleanse your palate and complemented the sausage so nicely. The service was good and I truly appreciated the thought and time that went into designing the restaurant as well as the menu. Really a work of art.

Beautiful interior with a gorgeous wood burning fireplace as the centerpiece for the whole restaurant. Very Creative Italian menu with the distinction of being made entirely«from scratch» meaning they know the origin and contents of all ingredients. The food is superb! I ordered the Roasted Beets which are prepared with candied pecans and goat cheese. This was followed by a mushroom pizza which was out if this world! I highly recommend this place. It’s different in a wonderful way!
