Had an intense craving for a Philly Cheese Steak and remembered seeing Pappy’s mentioned. Liked that they had hush puppies, but they were a little burnt, over cooked and had a strange taste dough wise. Thankfully J had fries with his which were pretty good. Philly cheese was very filling and pretty good, just wasn’t thrilled. I like my meat in slices and big chunks of peppers, onions. Everyone prepares theirs differently. This was my first sandwich where everything was super diced not a huge deal, just an observation. Italian beef and au jus w peppers looked really good. The few bites I had tasted great. Gal taking our order was nice and came over to clean our table before we sat. It was a tad dirty. Nice change of pace from the norm of quick bites on the go.

1 Chicken Gyro and an order of Hush Puppies please! Pappy’s has the best chicken gyro I’ve tasted! I’ve tried them a other places and the reason I like Pappy’s is the sauce is on the side. I can use as much or as little as I please. I LOVE the hush puppies too! They are hot and not at all greasy. They are cooked to perfection. My dining companion had the dipped hot beef and said it was great. I tried his onion rings and they were okay — see above — hush puppies are better. The food is hot and fast, you can eat there or take it to go. What I also enjoy is it’s a bottle or can of pop, not some watered down fountain that tastes like the water it was made with. I’ve eaten there on a couple of occasions and gotten food to go also — no matter the time, if it’s busy, the service is quick, the portions large(maybe too large), and the food delish. If you’re in the Midway looking for a quick and tasty alternative to fast food chains, try it. I think it offers something for everyone!

I LOVE Pappy’s. The hot Italian beef(dipped) is huge and out of this world.(Have lots of napkins handy). I always order hush puppies instead of fries because it is so difficult to find them in Minnesota. I have fallen so completely in love with this particular sandwich that I have yet to order anything else. I have one friend who swears by the fish and chips and another that likes the Chicago style dogs. I have only been to the University shop, never to the original on Maryland. In my experience, the place is pretty clean. The seating is minimal, so you may not be able to eat-in if you go at a busy time. Give Pappy’s a try — if you like authentic, Chicago style eateries, I think you will like it.

Chicago-style eatery, check out Pappys on Maryland and White Bear instead. The dining room was dirty, even though it smelled strongly of cleaning products when we entered. The floor was so slippery it was like they mopped it with grease. There were crusty condiment bottles that poured in our laps and the lemonade slushie tasted like cleaning products. When we brought it to their attention, they said it tasted better than it usually does! Yuck!
