I had the mango French toast which was quite good. The restaurant is made from an old house and there is only 1 bathroom but it’s nice enough. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this place but I didn’t regret going there either; that’s why it gets 3 stars.

Had brunch here with the BF on a Monday in June and the waitress told us we could sit anywhere we’d like. We’ve been here before during Mardi Gras season but I’m finally just writing my review. Their Banana Foster French Toast is really good. Of course not the best I’ve ever had but it certainly is delicious. Comes with 4 pieces of French bread stuffed with banana sauce in the middle and it is laid on top of their Banana Foster’s sauce. I asked for extra sauce but didn’t get extra sauce. Oh well, less calories for me. BF got the Banana pancakes. It was huge! As big as the whole plate, if not bigger. Not bad. It had crispy sides but it wasn’t fluffy. It was literally a flat banana pancake. I wouldn’t order this. The French toast was worth ordering though. So between the pancake and the French toast, by all means… don’t waste your time and get the French toast. BF washed it down with a lemonade and a shot of strawberry but Omg was it super sour! He had to put extra extra sugar! Gave me a sour face! Lol Cute little restaurant! They have art sculptures of New Orleans houses on their walls for sale which is interesting to look at. This place gets pretty busy on the weekends during peak times. The service was mediocre, not the greatest. Lots of Hipsters here. I like this place, BF does not. But that’s okay, there’s always so much to choose from in New Orleans!

5 stars because everything was good! From the service to the food, it was a great dining experience. Nice little brunch spot uptown on Magazine St after church, but watch out for the line that keeps forming because the food is just that great! They do fresh juicing where you can just pick from the small list of fruits and mix and match however you like. During the seasons they like to change it up, so be aware of that bc what they have now won’t always be there another time. They don’t offer a juicing list where they make their own fruit concoctions(which would’ve helped me make a decision better) so I had to make up my own. Thankfully the waitress was nice enough to help with that and helped me make the choice of doing the Kale, Watermelon, Carrot, and Beet juice. It came out great! Perfect and satisfying to my liking. Anyways, we ordered: Shrimp & Grits Crab & Salmon Avocado Omelette Bananas Foster Overall, they were all good! The shrimp and grits was my absolute favorite! Bananas Foster was def a great ending to our meal. It was a lot, so good thing we shared everything.

If I could eat their Banana Fosters French Toast or Shrimp & Grits every day without lowering my life expectancy, I WOULD. Banana Fosters French Toast– Made with French bread. Inside is this cream cheese filling that is slightly sweetened, oozing out of the toast once you cut into it. Not to mention, the rum flavored syrup on the plate perfectly complemented the creamy filling. It was probably one of the best things I have eaten during my New Orleans visit. The outside had a crunch to it while the inside maintained its moisture. I could talk about this all day if I could. haha Shrimp & Grits– Not as outstanding as the french toast, but definitely REALLY good. It was jam packed with flavor and shrimps were cooked nicely. They also offered juices here which were a tad pricey($ 6), which we ended up getting to «balance» our meal. But they had a lot of variety of fruits, and only a little extra(50 cents) for additional veggies like kale, beets, to be added to the juice. Overall, one of the best breakfast/brunches we had during our stay in NOLA!

Five stars, from food to service to ambiance. We went for a late breakfast, the wait time was about 20 minutes — not bad! We brought our own gin for cocktails — they serve juice but no booze. The décor is charming! We got the shrimp and grits, and bananas foster french toast. Best french toast of my life. The shrimp and grits are like our Creole grandmother used to make. Amazing all around!

I came here for breakfast during my trip to New Orleans with a friend. She’s a local and recommended this place, as she’s been coming to Surrey’s for years. We came on a weekday morning and were seated right away. My friend said that’s definitely not the case during the weekends and I believe it. It’s a pretty small space that I can imagine gets pretty cramped when there are a lot of people. I ordered the banana pancake and added peanut butter– best decision. It’s only one pancake per order but it’s HUGE; I couldn’t finish it. I also ordered carrot and orange juice. They make their juices to order and it was also delicious. My friend went with a TexMex inspired dish and enjoyed it as well. The service was fast and attentive. My coffee and water were constantly refilled. Surrey’s is one of the cheaper restaurants I went to in New Orleans, for breakfast or otherwise. I would highly recommend it if you’re staying during the week. I can’t say this is a good option on the weekends because it’s probably packed, but there’s a reason why. The vibe that I got was calm and casual(the décor is pretty cool), but can imagine it gets hectic when all the tables are filled The place used to be cash only but now accepts cards. There’s still an ATM in the back which is pretty convenient regardless.

A must try in you’re in New Orleans. My cousin happened to see this place on triple D and wanted to give it a shot during our visit to NO. It’s in a random place in the middle of a neighborhood but then again it seems like everywhere that we went in NO was like this. Place is real small but busy. My mission on this trip was to eat the best of the best and I am so glad that Surrey’s served one of the best things I ate during my trip. The shrimp and grits were SO. DAMN. GOOD. We ordered two plates of it since we didn’t think one plate was enough. It has the perfect amount of richness and flavors. The bacon really goes well with it all and the shrimps are perfectly cooked and seasoned. I am drooling just thinking about it and wish that I could find a place back home that makes this dish just as well. The other plates that I tried were the shrimp omelette and biscuits and gravy. Those were decent but nothing compared to the shrimp and grits. The servers were super nice also. I wish there was a place like this in San Diego!

Back again second day in a row! I love banana foster French toast so much! I’m ordering it again! Although I do have a reason coming back right before I have to leave on my flight back to Texas. Yesterday at surreys uptown, my banana foster plate was embarrassingly small. Last time, I ate two pieces and was full. This time I ate all 4 pieces and was not satisfied. The portion was half the size from my first visit.

For those who are like me and are swayed by the 4.5 star reviews here and think this is a must-visit — make no mistake, it’s a worthy visit, but certainly not a «must» if you are pressed for time in this city. Came here on a Friday around 10am and was seated right away. Ordered the shrimp and grits and the bananas fosters French toast. To no fault of Surrey at ALL, we were a tad let down due to our very high expectations from Unilocal reviews. The shrimp and grits, while still very good, was certainly not the best in town. Atchafalaya and Luke hold down the fort on that front, and by an insanely large margin. However, for $ 13, how can I complain? It would be unfair of me to compare given the price value differentials. Great value and still a pretty darn good dish. The bananas foster French toast was a satisfying complement to the shrimp and grits, but we thought it was more bready and less custardy than we would’ve liked. I definitely agree with all the reviewers here who say that the bananas cream cheese filling was the best part of the dish. It was just delicious and NOT overly sweet at all! However, it was not sufficient and more of it would’ve made this dish more enjoyable. I would say only 60% of our bites had any filling at all. In short, not enough cream cheese filling, which makes it too bready, and way too much rum/butter/syrup. We basically had to sweep the toasts to the side of the plate that had the least syrup(too sweet for our taste, I know I know, it’s a dessert inspired dish… so no fault of surrey here either, just personal preference). Our meal was an amazing value. The price points, compared to almost every other brunch spot in town, were among the lowest(for shrimp and grits no less). This made for a very enjoyable experience overall and our stomachs and wallets both left very happy.

This café is one of my favorite breakfast/brunch spots anywhere. The Banana Foster’s French Toast is unbelievable. I loved everything about it. The toast is very soft and sweet. The banana cream inside and the Banana Foster sauce on top are incredible. They are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. I devoured the entire dish quickly. I rank the dish as one of three French Toast dishes that are above all others. I do not even want to rank them 1, 2, 3. Instead, I will rank them 1, 1a, 1b: Top 3 French Toasts: 1. Blue Moon Café in Baltimore(1621 Aliceanna St, Baltimore, MD21231): The Cap’N Crunch French Toast tops my list. Grinding cereal and using it to create a crunchy crust is genius. I also enjoy the fresh fruit on top. 2. Blu Jam Café(7371 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA90046): The Crunchy French Toast features a cornflake crust. It also has berries on top. I slightly like the Cap’N Crunch French Toast better because I enjoy the Cap’N Crunch crust a little more. 3. Surrey Café and Juice Bar: The Banana Foster’s French Toast is on par with both. I give the other two the thinnest of margins because I love the cereal crust. Nevertheless, the banana cream and Banana Foster sauce is an equalizer. I also ordered a side of home fries. The potatoes had excellent seasoning and a nice crunchy skin. In addition, Surrey is a juice bar. I had a fresh squeezed orange juice. Is a large, 16 ounce juice really worth $ 6.50? Personally, I would not normally pay for it. However, I wanted to try a fresh juice since I saw great reviews for them. It was very good. Nevertheless, it is a lot more than I would want to pay for juice. I got to Surrey at 8AM when it opens. The place is great so the seating will fill up quickly. On a Sunday, it was almost full by the time I left at 9AM. If you are visiting New Orleans and looking for recommendations, please see

Came here with a group of 7 for Sunday brunch. We waited about 45 minutes. Once we got called, our group couldn’t sit together :(we split to 2 and 5. I was with my husband in the group of 2. We ordered the shrimp and grits and the crab meat omelette. Price wise, it was about $ 12 each, which is a pretty good deal. Our food came really fast, and the omelette, I ordered with toast. The server didn’t give us any butter or jam till I was halfway done with the toast. Taste wise, the shrimp and grits was AMAZING! So much flavor and not what I would expect for grits. The omelette was good too, but the shrimp and grits was better. Portion wise, both were way smaller than I expected. I wasn’t fill after my dish.

Such a good breakfast spot! On magazine with parking nearby we waited for a good thirty mins but it was worth it. Mrs got the shrimp and grits and I got the banana fosters French toast and we were both drooling for more. The place is small and decorated with what I can guess is local artisans, this is def the best breakfast I’ve had here in NOLA. Don’t miss out !

There’s nothing better than coming to this place on a sunny or rainy day! There’s great out-door seating, and everyone working there is extremely nice and attentive to the customer’s needs! With that being said, lets get started with what we ordered! Shrimp & Grits Rating: 5⁄5 This has to be the best plate of shrimp and grits I’ve had in New Orleans. The portion they give you is extremely filling and the consistency of the plating is absolutely perfect because it looked just like the one’s in the photos on Unilocal! Not just that, but the first bite was filled with plenty of creole seasoning and a happy helping of shrimp! I was extremely surprised considering the fact that some places seem to skimp on shrimp, but no, not Surrey’s! The creaminess of the grits was absolutely PERFECT, and I can’t say that for every breakfast place. On top of that they give you three pieces of bread which are delicately placed on the side of the grits, and do an amazing job soaking up the seasoning from the grits. Don’t get me started with how crispy the bread was! Banana’s Foster French Toast Rating: 5⁄5 Quite possibly one of the best desserts I’ve had in New Orleans as well! Two for two, excellent job Surrey’s! At first look, I was confused, «where’s the banana?», I asked myself. I then decided to take a bite out of one of the pieces of french toast to find a hole under the french toast that was filled with banana-cream cheese! Hidden, it was all hidden underneath the four pieces of french toast. Sneaky, very sneaky. Not only was the french toast extremely fluffy, but it was also not overly sweet! The syrup beneath it gave the french toast a softer texture, and honestly, everything about the dish was perfect. In conclusion, this place is the ideal location for breakfast. There’s plenty of seats inside, and they even offer you coffee, tea, or water depending on what you enjoy! The servers are extremely nice, and the food is just as spectacular! Thanks for the unforgettable experience Surrey’s, I’ll definitely be back for more!

A highly recommended brunch destination by many and featured on several shows, my friend and I had a great time making the walk down to the charming Garden District where Surrey’s is nestled. Inside, the place is on the smaller side yet with no shortage of colorful decorations and eclectic charm. Thankfully, we came on a weekday and avoided the long lines I’d read about. To begin, the juices are damn tasty and highly recommended — loved my grapefruit. Wanting to keep things on the lighter side, we opted to split the shrimp creole omelette — very well made and absolutely brimming with bold, spicy flavor and cheesy goodness inside. Regarding service, it was friendly though a little lacking in attentiveness. While it wasn’t the easiest being seated at one of the tables right by the back of the café, the staff should’ve paid closer attention as we had to work quite a bit to get flag them down. Overall, a delicious spot and definitely worth visiting.

This is an awesome place for breakfast/brunch! My first visit was with a friend and her son who is a year and a half. The wait staff was perfect all visits, and made sure we were comfortable the first visit, and that beverages were refilled quickly on all visits. I have been early on all of my visits and have not had issues with a wait time. Some days are busy, some are not. This section of Magazine in one way, west bound, and parking is generally easy here, even on a weekend. The interior is rustic diner, the artwork on the walls is nice, and all for sale, these cute little local New Orleans art of houses. The coffee is hot and good. The dining area is very clean and neat. My favorite meal so far has been the mango stuffed french toast. The corned beef hash and eggs was good, as was the basic breakfast. The prices were just perfect in my opinion. I look forward to many visits here in the future.

Mmmm the Migas egg plate is so delicious! It’s scrambled eggs with onions, tomatoes, poblano peppers, cheddar cheese, pico de gallo and corn tortilla chips, and it’s so flavorful and cheesy and so crunchy with the chips! I also had a perfect flaky biscuit and heavenly grits. My boyfriend had the breakfast sandwich with sausage on a biscuit, but the wide and flat eggs didn’t quite line up right with the round sausage and squat biscuit, so it felt more like three separate things than an integrated sandwich. That said, all the elements were tasty, and we were also happy to purchase some local art(which adorns the walls) while we were there.

Amazing spot in the Lower Garden District! It definitely was one of our highlight meals during our visit. Surrey’s has a pretty vast breakfast and lunch menu, including several gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan dishes. There will undoubtedly be something for everyone here. After much debate between savory vs. sweet, we decided to have the best of both worlds and ordered the crawfish omelette and the banana foster french toast. [Louisiana crawfish omelette] This was amazing — an avocado and brie omelette topped with a crawfish cajun creole sauce. It was a very rich dish but so delicious and flavorful with every bite. The sauce is out-of-this-world yummy. The warm, fluffy biscuit was a great side to have with the hearty entrée. [Banana foster french toast] Banana french toast done right! The banana cream cheese was heavenly and not too sweet while the banana foster sauce was decadent and rich. It was the perfect balance of rum, brown sugar, and butter. Even with all the sauce drizzled on top, the french toast had a slight crisp on the outside, which is exactly how I like my french toasts. My only complaint is that there wasn’t enough of the banana cream cheese in between the french toasts. I’m so glad we made a stop here during our short visit. It will definitely be on our list of recommended places to go to when in New Orleans. Can’t wait to give this place another go if we’re back in town!

I stayed at an airbnb right next to this place and couldn’t not visit after seeing all the raving reviews on Unilocal.I saw coming here an opportunity to try non-French Quarter places since that’s where I am always at. I went with the Corned Beef Hash which was amazing. The chunks were huge and that tasty beefy flavor for the morning was apparent in every bite. My friend had the breakfast burrito which looked amazing. The meal will definitely fill you up. Service was excellent as was the classic NOLA atmosphere. Be prepared for at least a short wait especially on the weekends. This spot is definitely a gem in New Orleans and I recommend it if you want some great breakfast.

I had high hopes for Surrey — it seemed like the perfect little neighborhood spot — but I was really disappointed. Came here with a group of 6 on a Friday morning. It was pretty crowded so we had to wait about 45 minutes before being seats(and they had to split us up because they don’t have large tables). Food choices were interesting but everything was underwhelming(although the portions were huge). I’d say it wasn’t much better than a typical diner. Nonetheless, service was friendly and fast — but definitely not the place for large groups or for a ‘quick’ bite because it seems like the wait time is pretty standard unless you luck out.

My friend said this was a must-have stop on my recent trip to NOLA, and he was correct. This was definitely my favorite restaurant of the New Orleans tour! I got my first go-around at Shrimp and Grits and it was amazinggggg. That sauce! We all wanted to take it home and just lather it on everything. So freaking good. I don’t even like shrimp that much, and the only time I’ve had grits, they were plain and I hated the texture(yeah, why did I order this again??) BUTOMG sooo glad I did, because it was sooo freaking good. Friends got a crab omelette(pretty good), tofu breakfast platter(honestly, lacked a little flavor), and an egg’s benedict on special(really good, but had hogshead meat which isn’t my jam!). We got fresh orange and grapefruit juice as well. There is definitely a wait, but luckily it was a nice day, so we just walked around and grabbed some coffee down the street and it went by in no time.

This is a great little spot nestled in a residential area. You’d almost miss it if it weren’t for the long line of people standing out front waiting patiently(at times for 40 minutes plus!) to get in… but so worth it if you’re not in a rush and have someone fun to chill with. There is limited space inside this narrow house turned restaurant; maybe 20 tables and three sets at the counter. Tight squeeze if you have a stroller or wheel chair but they will accommodate. The décor is colorful and very NOLA themed w artwork from local artists adorning the walls. Please note there is only one restroom so if ya gotta go, don’t put it off as lines do form. Patrons are super friendly every time we’ve been and are not shy about striking up a conversation while waiting for food. People don’t seem to linger too much after eating so the flow of patrons is pretty constant. There is no outdoor seating so be prepared to stand, but if the wait is long you can walk around to check out the really cool looking homes and shops in the immediate area. The hostess will step outside to yell your name but don’t go too far. Service is always outstanding and quick once you get in and place your order. They usually offer two fresh juice options, OJ and a combination like Orange/pineapple/mango. Portions are large but the prices are aren’t(Google for menu and pricing). Our favorite breakfast dishes are Shrimp n grits, bananas foster French toast, croissant breakfast sandwich w sausage-all so EXCELLENT that every time we finish we consider coming back the next day to do it again, lol. If you love off the beaten path restaurants this is sure to be a new fave each time you visit NOLA.

Yumm-o! Surrey’s Café was a good place to hit up for breakfast on our most recent trip to New Orleans. We ended up going twice, just to try other items on the menu. I used this as an opportunity to try breakfast items that were more familiar to me(as I was already at my limit with rich foods for lunch and dinner). My husband took this as an opportunity to try the house favorites on the menu; namely, the crab omelette and bananas foster french toast. When we arrived, there were a few couples waiting outside. Thankfully, one of them told us to get our name on the list(inside) for a table. Duh! We hadn’t thought about that. Anywho, the wait wasn’t too long, maybe 25 minutes or so. We had a nice conversation with some people outside so it wasn’t that bad. Once inside, we were immediately served with cups of water. My husband ordered a coffee, which came out right away and was refilled throughout our entire breakfast visit. He said he liked to coffee better at Surrey’s than where we went to brunch the day before. As for the food, we didn’t wait long for our food to arrive once we ordered it. I ordered the Costa Rican breakfast, which was simple and just what I wanted. Two eggs cooked over easy, over brown rice… black beans added to the mix… pico de gallo and sliced avocado on top… with cheese, of course. Delicious! My husband’s crab omelette was fantastic. I tend to shy away from crab because I can usually taste a certain fishiness to it, especially if its not fresh. However, this omelette was not fishy by any means. Paired with the brie, it actually made for a fantastic combo. I would not mind ordering one of these for myself, if we happen to be in NOLA again. For breakfast round two(day two), I ordered the yogurt with fruit and granola(again, at my tipping point for rich foods) and my husband ordered the bananas foster french toast. Lots of yogurt, lots of granola, a decent amount of fruit. The bananas foster was too sweet for my liking but my husband really enjoyed it. He’s got a major sweet tooth. The service was fast and friendly on both occasions. The venue itself is quirky but cute. All in all, a great spot! Would probably come here again, even if it means not trying something new in NOLA(for a future visit).

This is one of my favorite breakfast places if I want to venture out of my Mid-City neighborhood! One of my favorites is their shrimp and grits! One of my besties loves the omelette with crab meat and I agree it’s divine! I’ve also tried the banana French toast and it’s amazing! Pretty much anything you get here is going to taste good! Keep in mind this is one of two locations and it’s closer to the CBD and French Quarter in case you’re looking for that proximity. This is the smaller of the two locations and is basically a converted house. All of the servers have been pretty friendly and efficient. Just keep in mind you write your name down for a table and it may take a while, especially for Sunday brunch time bc it’s a popular joint! So just be patient, checkout the menu, and enjoy breakfast food! Happy eating!
