Skip Cochon and come here for lunch! We came here based on Unilocal reviews, and were not disappointed. Their ingredients are extremely fresh — bread is crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside, and their homemade special of the day — shrimp remoulade — got our fingers a licking! Best of all, the guys who run the place really showed us what«southern hospitality» means. Ten thumbs up!

This is a great little place for lunch. The hours on the door says it is open from 10am — 3pm. There is not much of a grocery here now … you can buy some candy bars, sodas, gum, ice cream bars and chips. As far as the food, it is great. I had the New Orleans Ferdi 6 in. po boy — comes with Ham, Roast Beef(w/gravy), and melted swiss cheese. Dressed adds lettuce, tomato and pickle.($ 8.75) My husband got the Traditional Roast Beef 6 in. po boy. Included gravy, and is dressed however you like it.($ 6.99) We also tried the gumbo($ 3.99) — it had plenty of shrimp in it and was very good, came with a few slices of bread. Many folks were walking by this restaurant to get to the Butcher for lunch, we tried the Butcher on Monday… The food is decent, the lines are long, the wait is long and you are lucky if you get a seat. Give this place a try… it is decently priced, friendly folks that work there and really good food!

Never ate here but when I showed up in the middle of a power outage, Mark, the guy who runs it, drove me across town to somewhere equally awesome. Rare to find such stand-up people. Thanks Mark!

Good, inexpensive casual food, including a variety of po’boys. No line at lunchtime, within walking distance and timeframe when you’re at the conference center.

Great little find near the New Orleans Convention Center. Had breakfast here twice last week. The egg, cheese, bacon(or ham) poboys were awesome. Give it a try instead of that bland convention food.

I really thought it was great. Turducken po’boy was really delicious. Don’t judge this book by its cover. Go in and enjoy a tasty meal presented by a friendly and helpful staff

I am from New York and my wife is from New Orleans so we head down probably 4 times a year and we have been eating here for years I feel like, since it opened sometime after Katrina, I don’t know probably a year. I remember it way back when it was just a garage door swung open, some soda racks, chips, and cigarettes. A plastic picnic table but we got some Po’ Boys. Talked to the owner/chef while we ate and I gotta say the Po’ Boys were out of this world. They rival Domilese’s uptown. There, I said it. When we go back I am very happy to see how successful it has become for the owner. He has come a long way since we had our original lunch. I make sure to come by everytime we go back.

This place is the poster-child for hole in the wall dining. I walked by this place many times without a second glance until a few co-workers recommended the poboys. I had the shrimp(regular comes spicy!), dressed, and a side of their delicious fries! I was impressed with the portions, taste, and customer service. With Cochon Butcher right next door I can see this place getting overlooked a lot but I say why wait at Butcher when you have classic New Orleans right next door? Moral of the Story: I’ll be back, and next time I’m trying the tots!

I can’t stop thinking about the perfect spicy breading on my soft shell crabs from here! Some of the locals told me I had to go here when I asked where I could find the best fried oysters. I almost walked right by because it doesn’t exactly look like a place to eat, as it has various products you might find in a Seven Eleven, but they do and it’s worth stopping, waiting, and raving about! I did have to wait, as there was a lunch time rush from the locals and tourists alike, but it was worth it. I got two soft shell crab poboys– hold the bread and fixins– for $ 16– what a steal! Special Note: There are lots of tables where you can sit and wait for your name to be called by the nicest lady with an authentic accent and true grit! My kinda place!

Not a bad option for a quick lunch if you’re in the Convention Center district. Nice selection of Po Boys, some unique, but in the end, it’s really just a sandwich. Decent prices. Small with limited seating.

4.5 What I ate: Fried shrimp poboy. The shrimp were delicious. The crust was crispy and flaky without being too greasy; the shrimp were not overcooked. Bottled water was a little pricey but still cheaper than anything you would find in the French Quarter(~$ 2). The staff is friendly, but I feel like most of the locals in NOLA are. Overall a good, cheap meal and a nice alternative to the Butcher, which is next door.

Hole in the wall joint, but since we found it on Unilocal,we ventured to it. The décor was very undesirable, and it reminded me of old liquor stores I used to visit as a kid. The food smelled good, but not sure if it was from this place or the Cochon butcher joint next door, which was jumpin’. We ordered the plate meals(shrimp fried and grilled). The one thing I have to say was that it was a very large portion for what we paid. However the clerk/cook/cashier guy was a little out of it(not sure if he had a long night or what) but he made a mistake in charging us, which he later rectified after we asked. Not sure if I would visit again, but def would try the place next door.

Nah. The clerk/cook took forever to acknowledge us. Whatever, I guess that can be considered«character» by some. I got a soft shell crab po-boy and there was nothing special about it. I wish I would have went to cochon butcher next door…

Close to the convention center and we Unilocaled it on the map after subway was crazy long lines. Lets be honest though, I was in NOLA and no way should I have even been thinking about eating at subway and missing out on the Cities Must have food experiences. This place could be easily missed and I almost did and walked into the place next door. When you first enter it looks like a small grocer, but then you smell whats cooking and wipe the drool off your face and order. I asked for a recommendation. Surf and turf Po Boy. Comes with Cajun fried Shrimp(big ones), Roast and the fixins. I ordered a side O’ fries and it was a match made in Po Boy Heaven. Perfectly seasoned shrimp batter, tender and juicy roast debris?(not sure on that one) I ate the entire thing and almost all of the crispy thick fries too. It was huge and it satisfied my NOLA Po boy cravings. Best one I have tried in the city yet. Best Po Boy!!!

A decent sandwich at a decent price, but not outstanding. I had a hot roast beef po’ boy. Plenty of roll, but not so much meat. And the meat was chopped and not sliced.

OMG. Not only was this place an absolute godsend after the Running of the Bulls, but they also have AMAZING breakfast poboys. They’re *omelette* breakfast po-boys. Absolutely freaking delicious. So here’s what happened. I thought I was soooo clever, deciding to go to Pi for food after running of the bulls, since it was nearby but out of the fray of the parade. We were starving, because I forgot to eat my breakfast — neither the Coconut M&Ms nor the beer made it into my tummy — and I figured it’d be faster to walk over to Pi for food than to try to get something at, say, Ernst Café or Grand Isle. However, much to the chagrin of the Tummy Gods(who demand breakfast, sometimes twice), we discovered that Pi was closed. WTF? It’s Saturday. Okay, moving on… Turns out NOTHING is open in the Warehouse District at NINE. In the MORNING. Uh huh. It was early. Of course nothing was open. Mystery solved. Tummy Gods are pissed. It took us a while to figure out what was going on, and by that time we’d walked all the way to Cochon Butcher hoping that something, anything, would be open. I thought about sitting down on the sidewalk and waiting for them to open(that is, assuming my whining and pleading and pouting didn’t convince them to feed me), which wouldn’t be for another 30 minutes or more. Fortunately, it didn’t come to that, because one of the Butcher employees we spoke to out on the sidewalk mentioned that the place next door was open and serving breakfast. Whoever you are, Butcher employee, you will forever be my hero. Even if I’d walked in the right direction, I probably wouldn’t even have noticed this place, so I owe that dude for helping me discover the BESTBREAKFASTPOBOYSINTHECITY. That’s about it. Long story, short, I neeeeeded food, NOLA Grocery provided it. They went a step further, though, and made us an amazing, amazing breakfast, with super friendly service, and now that this place is firmly on my radar I cannot wait to go back. Wonder if they deliver…

I’ve been here a few times to grab a red bull or to get an egg, cheese and tomato on wheat toast made and they were super fast, friendly and fairly inexpensive! As Andrea B. stated, they’re not fancy, and they’re not a restaurant. Its perfect to pop in grab a quick sandwich and/or some snacks, sodas, cigarettes, whatev. They do deliver(I’ve never utilized this) and they have a pretty extensive sandwich menu. They’re not pet friendly inside, but they have a water bowl and two metal tables outside to eat with your pup. Duncan approves! Also, they’re open pretty late which is convenient, I think 10pm, please dont quote me on it!

I used to live down the street from this place and was here quite often. I would pick up a soda, grab some fresh veggies and whatever I had forgotten from the grocery store. I never had a problem asking the kitchen to sell me one of their veggies if there wasn’t one on the shelf. The food was always excellent and made to order. They didn’t blink an eye when I ordered a vegetable sandwich with mustard one day(I get weird cravings)! I just popped in yesterday to say hello to the owner and check out the newly expanded space. It was still being organized– but they already had a lot of regular grocery items available. It’s not fancy, and it’s not a restaurant. It’s a sandwich shop/convenience store. However, the tables provided are clean and the staff are very friendly. That cannot be said about many of the establishments in the surrounding area. It’s a great example of New Orleans food for regular folks like me– cheap, tasty, fast with funny signs(there is a note saying that the food is spicy but you can order it 2 other ways– yankee or super spicy(not their words, can’t remember what it said), which is indicitave of any local place. If you are at the WWII museum and hungry, check out this place instead of blowing a bunch of money at butcher next door. Drop in, grab your kitty litter, can of soup, po boy and your pack of smokes all in one stop!

I was here for a convention and a local recommended this place for a good poboy! This was a block away from the convention center, was my last meal in new Orleans and my first poboy I have ever had in my life,. I ordered a 12 inch fried oysters and fried shrimp poboys with jalepeno! I drenched my sandwich in Louisiana hot sauce and it was amazing! I even bought a bottle of hot sauce and brought it back with me to San Francisco! Staff was extremely friendly and helpful! The closest bank of america was 30miles away and was in desperate need of cash for the taxi ride to the airport! They were nice enough to provide me with cash back so I can get home safe! Thank you so much NOLA grocery for your hospitality! Will be back when I am back in town!

The friendliest people and amazing food. I’m being selfish to secure the«First to Review» stamp for this one, but let me just say we went to Cochon later that night and though I absolutely loved it, later that night we were hankering to stop by NOLA grocery one more time for a po’ boy. The po’boys we tried at Mother’s and in the French Quarter paled in comparison to the delicious sandwiches served up by the guys at NOLA grocery. Fried oysters, smothered in hot sauce. Perfectly toasted bread. Mindblowing gravy. Yum! This place honestly is just a deli to serve folks who work in the warehouse district. It’s set up in an open garage, and you can buy your 25 cent bags of chips and 99 cent Arizona iced teas. Perfect place.
