I am very sad to hear that this diner has closed. I now have to find a new place to visit when I go to the car show. R.I.P Market Diner

This was one of my favorite diners. I really liked their burger deluxe and their breakfast dishes. It was great to find a place that was open 24hrs when working oncall at all hours of the night. I’m really very unhappy that bit by bit the old New York is being destroyed in order to make room for high rise condos. This place was iconic, had good food at reasonable prices(this is midtown) and on the way to/from the Lincoln. I’ll miss the food and the memories.

We wanted to go for breakfast and read reviews that the eggs benedict at the Market Diner are really good but unfortunately that was not the case and they were actually the worst we have ever eaten. The cappuccino was made twice but remained undrinkable. Sorry guys but this place missed the mark.

I’m sad it’s disappearing in the name of progress, I mean expensive real estate. But I must confess tonight’s visit was only my second. The chopped steak was better than the fries. Robert Sietsema had an interesting picture of salisbury steak which I didn’t see on the menu. The workers remained friendly amid the barrage of drunk club kids who wanted to use the bathroom but not buy anything.

I live down the street and I am livid that there are only a few months left for me to enjoy Market Diner. This is a historic spot where apparently Frank Sinatra used to come. The thing is, it REALLY depends on who waits on you. I’ve had great service and the worst service. My parents take me here every other Sunday when they come to the city. It is our spot. We have our favorite waitress and we request to sit in her section. I’m ambivalent to tell you but her name is Kathy(I don’t know if it is with a C or a K, actually) and she is this latin fireball. She is so sassy and sweet and I just adore her SOOO much! She remembers our orders and brings us biscuits and muffins. Everytime we eat here, the food is on point. I am really going to miss this place. However, if we don’t get Kathy, it is not a good time. We had a waiter who was clearly too busy to wait on us and we had to ask the hostess to bring us our coffee and to bring us the bread basket. It is not her job! We haven’t obviously had every waiter here but Kathy seems to be the best of the best and I will follow wherever she goes next!

I can’t comment on the food because I was only here for drinks. It was certainly okay for a brief couple rounds. Roomy, good views of the street. I would come here again, I reckon – the environment was clean –although the bathrooms were not;(but alright I will let that pass because of the West Side highway location; they must see a lot of riff-raff clintele). Anyway the sole observation I want to make is that it is indeed a ‘classic diner’ environment; just as some others have pointed out. Usually that is a VERY good thing in my book. Because typically I am all about classic; I am all about tradition; I am all about keeping good things in-place and escaping unnecessary upgrades. But there was something a little odd about the ‘classic’ environment here at Market Diner. It was so ‘classic’ it was a little bit creepy and off-putting. Not sure if I can explain this; especially because it’s not as if the management is really at fault or as if they’ve done anything wrong. The food may be spectacular, I wouldn’t know. What I’m saying is just that it doesn’t appear as if anything in this diner was ever purchased recently. The glassware, the napkin-holders, the seats, the flatware, the salt&pepper shakers; everything looked just. completely out-of-date. Mind, it was all clean – but just ‘antique’ –and not in a good way. I mean, let’s say you had cool, original, 1945 salt-&-pepper shakers in your diner. Okay, do your best to keep them around. But if you have lame, shoddy plastic 1970s salt-&-pepper shakers… no need to keep them in place, eh? There’s many dive bars I drink in around this city, where they’ve never upgraded the style or décor but the look of this diner was off, even for me, a die-hard traditionalist. I think what tipped me off was that I got one of those little red plastic pirate-cutlass skewers in the lime in my drink. Errmmm… eh?

The Market Diner is a classic old NY diner with a menu that seemingly goes on forever. The Market Diner is also the land of «yes» as in yes you can have coleslaw instead of fries, yes you can have a BLT, made with turkey bacon. The food is great, the coffee excellent. Sadly, it is being torn down to be replaced with some soulless building to be filled with people«all made of ticky tacky and {who will} all look just the same.”(Malvina Reynolds). Try to get there before it closes. Try not to cry.

We landed here after a very rough night. We were so grateful to just park our car and get something to eat. It is a simple diner and it does the job. Not expensive.

Great value if you want a quick, tasty and unpretentious bite. The service is always fast and upbeat and the menu is varied enough that you’ll find something on it, whether you’re looking for comfort food, a hearty breakfast, something to quiet your hunger pangs, or a bite to nurse a hangover. The staff is always open to your request and you won’t feel like they’re doing you a favor when you ask to personalize an item on the menu. Of they’ve got the ingredients, they’ll make it. Open 24⁄7 and always a noteworthy short wait, if any, means that this remarkable little diner is a go-to place any time of the year. I highly recommend it.

I wish this place could be open forever! One of the cleanest diners I’ve been to. It’s relatively small, but we only had to wait ~5 minutes. I had delicious french toast. Other members of my party had sandwiches and omelets. Everyone was pleased. There is a bar area and booths all around. The restrooms are located downstairs and seemed clean but a little aged. The menu is reasonably priced, and the service is very nice.

Classic diner with huge portions and great service. Close to the Javits Center, this place is my go to breakfast place when I’m working in NYC!

If you’re looking for a quick meal at a decent price, this is the place to go. but i mean QUICK They are looking for high-turnover to continue the rush for the food and they do a good job at doing so If you still want to enjoy their food without the rush, order delivery or pick up, just as fast but now you can enjoy the food as slow or as fast you wish in the comfort of home

My mom and I stopped for breakfast and were very happy with this diner. The place is clean and bright, the wait-staff was great, our waiter was really friendly. My mom ordered a fruit bowl that was a cereal bowl full of all different kind of fruid(apples, grapes, blueberries, oranges, bananas, catelope, honeydew melon, strawberries). Our eggs, bacon and toast were cooked exactly as requested. We’ll go back if we’re in the area again.

Market Diner is my go-to breakfast spot in the neighborhood. It’s a little bit pricey for standard diner fare, but the portions are so large, you could make two meals out of them. Waitstaff always aims to please, and have yet to have bad service.

I have been going to the Market Diner for the past 10 years and it’s hands down the best in the area. On the weekends they offer you homemade biscuits and muffins. The french onion soup is the best also the asian crispy chicken salad(dressing on the side, extra dressing). Spinach and artichoke dip is another fav and for dinner, definitely go with the turkey and dressing. Delivery is quick and anytime you go in and sit, you feel like your part of the family. Prices are a bit higher than other diners however it’s completely worth it in terms of food quality and quantity. I love the market diner.

So here’s the scene… We’ve been out dancing. it is 5 am and my companions want to eat. We had established earlier in the day that they wanted to try this place(I didn’t realize it was tonight)…sounded like a good idea, but I wasn’t in any state of caring where we were to go… I just followed along(we walked there). we were promptly seated… the space was open and appeared clean… very brightly lit(or at least compared to the nightclub we had just left). I had been eating all day(i had committed to order food wherever we went all day)…so i didn’t order anything here… oh i ordered water. I went to the bathroom… down a flight of stairs into the basement. there was a girl by the sink. I asked her if she was waiting to use the restroom and she said she was waiting for her friend… ok i entered the stall. As I sat down 2 girls started arguing and one said«I’m going to shoot you in the head» …oh great… a shootout??? ugh. i thought about getting out of there… but i didn’t want to step in the middle on accident… so i went potty. and the aggressor girl had left by then. i went back up the girl who supposedly had the gun was sitting and smiling with her guy… the other two girls who were in the bathroom left the restaurant… I told my friends what happened. OMG! I guess i’m in new york! food came soon after(so quick) i tasted their food… hmm…glad i didn’t order anything. went home. packed and slept for a couple hours before getting up to fly home. it was an interesting experience… i’m grateful that I didn’t get killed in the crossfire(that didn’t happen)

Stopped by for a pre-show dinner and left pretty satisfied. [+] The booths were clean [+] The layout was nice and spacious [+] Friendly and attentive staff [+] Super fast service [+] Not crowded(good luck trying to get a table at Junior’s before showtime) [+] Quiet — imagine being able to talk at normal decibels to your dinner partner! [+] Large(and typical) diner menu with decent diner-quality food: complimentary pasta salad, good chicken noodle soup to warm you on a cold day, average spaghetti and meatballs, soft and fluffy challah French toast — nothing to write home about, but solid and satisfying My roommate orders online from here at least once a week, and delivery is always lightning quick. I’ve never heard her complain about the food. Once, they got her order wrong, and when she called, they immediately sent over the corrected order. Overall: A pretty solid diner, and a safe bet if you’re hungry and don’t feel like thinking/being adventurous.

We happened on this diner walking around NYC. It was a cold beacon in a hot city. The AC felt great! They had no problem splitting checks for our group of 4– much appreciated. Huge menu, serve breakfast late(all day maybe?). I ordered the fruit salad and sweet potato fries. The fruit salad was huge with a ton of fresh fruit: melon, blueberries, strawberries, oranges, apples, banana and more. The sweet potato fries were yummy too and a big portion. My friends all liked their food. It was quick and they kept our drinks filled. I would recommend!

I always get the sampler here. The price is just about right for onion rings, chicken wings and chicken tenders and mozzarella sticks. I like to change the onion rings for more chicken fingers or the chicken wings. it’s about $ 13 for the full package. The ranch sauce is my perfect companion to this plate. if I feel extra crazy(around 3am) I also order the disco fries! Yummy! Again, this is not the place I come to eat though very clean and prices are on point for a diner, I only visit is after partying and am hungry for something fried. they carry so many different desserts and their menu is pretty big. Another thing to keep in mind is they carry a liquor license and have most of the different alcohol drinks to serve. ;) This is a no date type place. C’mon people, this is a diner, not a restaurant!
