Good food and actually good oysters! Bought a dozen of blue point and they were great. Will come here again even tho service was slow which is why I took off a star

Such a sad meal was had here for a very steep price. I have been here many times and you can’t beat the ambience and lore of the place, but the food was so bad it ruined everything. I didn’t get what I ordered, everyone’s fish was over cooked, chowders where overly thickened, and the food was just boringly prepared. The service was slow on top of it all. The short of it is: order the raw bar or the fried seafood. Can’t mess that up. This place needs a menu redo, keep some classics and bring in some fresh new seafood recipes. It’s disrespectful to the fish to cook them this poorly.

The bloom is off the Rose. I have been eating in the Saloon at the Oyster Bar for more than 40 years and I will not be going back. While I am no longer the regular that I once was, Last night’s dinner was a total disappointment The service was a disgrace. It can only be described as non-existent and this can’t be blamed on the crowd as it was less than half full and there were literally two patrons at the bar in the saloon and more than enough staff to cover It took 15+ minutes to order cocktails and a comparable amount of time to receive them. One of our guests ordered 2 beers they were out of and when he ordered a 2nd beer when dinner was served, it arrived as we were finishing our entrees We ordered oysters to start only to learn most of those we selected were sold out(7:15 pm). The waiter advised us that they are closed Sunday and don’t want to be stuck so they bring in less and sell out The raw oysters took so long to receive that I thought they were sending out to another restaurant for pick up. The fried oysters lacked creaminess, were dry and overcooked. When we ordered dinner, a number of the daily specials were out. Dinner was eventually served with some potatoes undercooked and the vegetables over cooked My advice to the Oyster Bar is if you are not going to do it right on Saturday then don’t open I have so many great memories from this room that I will not risk them being tarnished further and have taken the oyster bar off my list The saving grace of the night was that we had dinner with our oldest daughter and her boyfriend and learned that they have gotten engaged. We are very happy!

This place is a massive tourist trap. Only giving two stars because the service was ok and the ambiance was great. Loved the ceilings and the bar looked nice. Food was terrible, every single person at our table said it was the worst meal they’ve had in a long time. I paid like $ 40 for black cod and it looked like microwaved mush. It came with a side of soggy(pre frozen) veggies which were super salty. Recommend that you take a look inside, the oysters were good at least but don’t waste your money here.

Good food, interesting location… drinks at the bar are also worth exploring. Try the seafood, some of the freshest and most well handled I’ve had in NYC. Head to the back bar for a little more privacy and access to the very knowledgeable bar staff.

Friends, do not take this 5-star review too seriously. I am only reviewing the Dutch Herring Festival, which happens 2 weeks every June, and I am only reviewing one dish, the Dutch herring filet($ 7). Apart from that, I stopped coming to this restaurant years ago. The food was hit or miss, but the prices were always sky high. The service was dismissive and sometimes non-existent. Once I sat down and waited to order but a waiter never came over. I left and never returned. That was years ago. Maybe it’s better now – read some reviews. The Guastavino interior is still impressive, but you can’t eat tiles. Then every June comes the Dutch herring festival, which is quite another matter. The Oyster Bar flies in the new herring every day from Holland. This is street food available from carts on every corner in Holland. They even have a cart in the center of the Oyster Bar, as well as a couple of dishes made with the herring on the menu. The filets are delicious, somewhere between raw and briny, tasting fresh and of the ocean from which they came. I would avoid the herring salads and just eat the filets. They garnish them with egg, onion and chives. They do not offer a sandwich with the filets on a soft roll with pickles and onions, like they do in Holland, which is a mistake, but you can buy the herring to go and make your own. Considering the cost of airfare to Amsterdam, the Oyster Bar is a viable alternative, but only in mid-June, when the new herring is served. Get some!

This place is awesome. It’s located right behind the echo chamber next to, but not within, the dining court. You’ll see stained glass on the outside that spell out«Oyster.» When you walk in, you will see sit down dining to your left and bar and diner-style dining to your right. We opted for the diner style dining which was more than adequate. Marvel at the coolness of the subway station ceilings and lights that have a nautical motif. I missed happy hour unfortunately so paid full price for the oysters. They run about $ 3 – 4 per oyster but they are incredibly fresh and good. I got a mix but they have a lot of variety. Next I tried the New England clam chowder. It was good but not amazing. The potatoes were a bit too soft and the clams weren’t chewy enough. It’s reasonably priced for the portion you get. They have many other seafood options here but those will run you about $ 40+ so just depends on what you’re looking for.

As other restaurants in midtown have become more expensive, this relic/classic becomes more competitive. Sitting under the Gustavino arches is always nice, a bit loud for a date or formal business lunch, but great otherwise. For this lunch I started with a Warsteiner Pils, cold and tasty, but a little flat. Bread arrived in the form of two small rolls(one was sourdough) and a stack of four seeded crackers. When I asked for butter, I was told the restaurant was out, the supplier failed to deliver. Guess GCOB were hoarding their beurre for the kitchen, but really, how does a seafood restaurant run out of butter — In Manhattan? The waiter brought olive oil, but it wasn’t the greatest. I shared an appetizer of fried clams with bellies with a colleague and they were the best I have had in Manhattan. Had they spent fewer seconds in the fryer, they would have been competitive with Cape Cod. My colleague moved onto the plate of four small seafood salads — he spared a shrimp, firm, cold perfectly cooked. My whole flounder was a nice portion, fresh, sweet fish, done just right. The side of broccoli rabe and other vegetables were well cooked, but needed… butter, or maybe olive oil. An espresso was surprisingly good for this kind of joint. The bill was a lot smaller than a steakhouse lunch.

Walking in I felt like I was transported 60 years, reminded me of that Mad Men scene where Don and Roger keep knocking back Oyster Platters, there was a great sense of American nostalgia, it’s a cool feeling that can’t be emulated anymore but it’s evoked here I sat at the bar and started with a creamy New England Clam Chowder($ 7). Little overpriced but very delicious, after you sprinkle the oyster crackers it’s pure textural indulgence with the creamy/crunch combo. I liked that this chowder had beans in there too(coulda had a V8) I know absolutely NOTHING about oysters, so the bartender kindly gave me a quick geography lesson and how different regions correlates to brininess. That guy was awesome!(5÷24÷16) He kindly selected 3 oysters that represented 3 unique styles; when it came out, he went into detail about each one. I really enjoyed that he informed me about ‘regional’ differences as opposed to ‘specific’ oyster species because obviously the oysters here rotate(change) everyday. 1. Beavertail(RI) — As he informed me, «local oysters are not as briny.» He was right. Of the first three, this semi-local oyster was not as briny and I enjoyed a simple, clean oyster flavor without a heavy aftertaste. 2. Kumamoto(OR) — Oregon packs a punch! This was a very small but meaty oyster. TONOFFLAVOR. But there was a slight funk on the back end. 3. Wellfleet(MA) — Did not like this one. Extremely briny and really gunky aftertaste. But I’m very glad I got to taste the extreme end of the spectrum. His choices really educated me on the different styles. After I slurped those, I felt brave to order on my own. 4. Peconic Gold(Long Island, NY) — Very tiny oyster. Not as briny, but I was looking for a bit more punch and wow 5. Yaquina(OR) — WHOA, this one was HUGEEEE(see the picture). This one was meaty, juicy, flavorful, and not too briny. The lemon juice and cocktail sauce seemed to really elevate this specific variety! I think I prefer Oregon oysters as of now but I gotta come back and make sure ;) Price-wise on the oysters depends on region and supply vs. demand(I think?) — on this day the cheapest oyster was $ 2.50, the most expensive $ 3.95 Note: This spot seems very touristy; as I tried to get in, I had to fight through small patches of people looking at the menu by the entrance, peering inside, taking group photos, and then a few groups with cameras around their necks cautiously walking in… Even at 11:45am, this place was already half-packed! I would recommend getting there early if you have a big group I really enjoyed my visit here. will definitely come back soon :)

While the food was okay, I was generally less than impressed with my experience here. Upon arriving, I advised the host of my 5:30pm reservation made through OpenTable. Somehow, two reservations had been set aside(I only made one), and the host ended up canceling my reservation through OpenTable. Not a huge deal, but I’d like those dining points. We were seated, but it took a bit of time before the waiter came over to take our order. Also, we were only able to place drink orders once — along with our main appetizer and entrée orders. Never did our waiter ask over the rest of the night if we’d like anything else to drink(though our water glasses were refilled consistently — by a different server). When our soups were brought to the table(I ordered a Manhattan Clam Chowder, my mother ordered a New England Clam Chowder), they weren’t very hot. After we had finished our soups(and the table was cleared off quickly), it took what seemed like for-ev-er before our main dishes were brought to the table. For my oyster order, almost all the ice that had been in the dish with the oysters had melted… so yeah, this should have been out to the table MUCH more quickly. The oysters were good, but nothing to write home about. Perhaps I would have been happier sitting in the oyster bar/counter area itself, as opposed to the main dining room… but the service here was underwhelming. The ambiance is nice enough, but the acoustics aren’t really forgiving either… at least if you’re sitting in the main dining area. Not the most enjoyable dinner out I’ve ever had, admittedly… which is sad, because I love a good oyster bar outing. TL;DR Underwhelming service. Acoustics in the main dining area aren’t really conducive to being able to have conversation without amping up your volume. Food is generally fine, but I’d never make a special point to return here.

Stopped in for a beer and a quick bite while waling around Midtown. We sat at the larger bar and received very good service from the counter person. I went with a Alagash draft and my friend opted for the blood orange cosmo which our server kindly provided and extra side cup of cocktail since ‘it was Friday’. We split a dozen east coast oysters which were all very good, the issue being that there were shell fragments in many of them which marred the experience. I particularly liked the Wellfleet’s which were briny and quite tasty. We also split fried oyster and oysters Rockefeller. The fried oysters had a crunchy coating and a moist interior and came with what seemed to be premade sauce. The Rockefeller was a bit sloppily plated but had a nice flavor. Not the best I have had but certainly not the worst. The décor is obviously amazing with the vaulted ceilings and tiled walls. The food was not as great as the ambiance and for the price could have been better.

Debate between a 3 and 4 star review and deiced to leave 4 star. I came here for the famous Oyster Pan Roast … the signature dish of the restaurant. It has been written about in numerous food blogs, articles, etc. and was listed as one of America’s iconic restaurant dishes. To me … it tasted like Campbell’s tomato soup with some oysters in it. If I didn’t actually see the dude physically make it using steam pots in front of me, you couldn’t tell me that it wasn’t canned tomato soup! So now I can say I tried it, anyways. I had some oysters and shrimp cocktail and those were great. They have a big board with all the Oyster choices and as they run out of a certain Oyster, they remove it from the board. I sat at the bar and watched the oysters opened, etc. rather than sit in the dining room. This LOOKS like a classic old school joint with its polished subway tile domed ceilings. It feels very industrial … kind of like the 1950s(wood paneling, brass clocks, etc.) meets the 1920s. Very old school, very retro, very untouched by time … right down to the red and white checkered tablecloths. The menu is very extensive. If there is a fish dish they don’t have, I can’t imagine it. Not sure why all the logos look like they are in 1970s block font … that puzzles me. But the menu has literally dozens of combinations, etc. If you don’t find something you like here, you must be the world’s pickiest eater. Everything tasted pretty fresh to me(despite being a Saturday night) and the shrimp cocktail was expensive but worth it because they had huge shrimp and not the tiny ones. The only part that put me off was the make your own cocktail sauce … there were big cups of horseradish on the bar and you are given a cup of ketchup with the cocktail. You have to mix it yourself but the horseradish just sits there and anyone can do anything to it. Pass. The waiter was great … right on the ball. Anytime I needed a refill on my soda, I didn’t even have to ask. I’d probably come here again if I was in town … it’s certainly an old school classic joint. The prices are actually not that bad for NYC either. I was expecting much higher prices for fresh seafood in mid-town.

I was in for a quick bite before catching my show, and I had eaten a late lunch; so I got clam chowder, two kumamoto oysters and an iced coffee. I was expecting rather large oysters but there was no problem with the food and I enjoyed it regardless. In fact I would like to try all of the oysters at some point. I do have qualms about the service, however. Im a server myself, so I understand that waiting on one person tables isn’t very rewarding, especially when they order so little. I even understand that waiting on minorities a lot of the time(not ALL the time) stinks too, because we(for whatever reason) sometimes(not ALL the time) tend to tip less than 15%. But that doesn’t excuse bad service. The one who took my order asked, «are you ready?» without even a small smile, and with barely concealed displeasure. I ordered and he asked«that’s it?» and when I said«yes» he said nothing more and walked away. He then proceeded to the POS podium and didn’t even try to hide the fact that he was speaking of me to the other servers(a mere 10 feet away) about my order and that I was sure to leave just $ 3. I was irritated but let it go because it’s not an uncommon train of thought(however at my work, we are NOT allowed to speak of the customer badly or about the tip– at least do it where I can’t hear you). I drink a lot of water so with the small glasses, the bus boy filled it 3 times before my food came, but the first server NEVER came back to my table. I was halfway through the chowder when he went to the table next to mine to fill their waters(two women who ordered meals and wine), check on them, etc. and then walked away without looking at my empty glass. I finished and the other servers for the section came and went with my plates and brought me the check. I was going to give my tip to the bus boy just because he did more work than my server did, so I asked one of the others about how they do tips. They said they work together, thus I assume pooling the table tips for one section and giving a percent to the busboy. I was disappointed at that, because one server shouldn’t ruin the others’ gain. My bill was $ 20 and I left $ 5. Right when I was checked out, the first server asked the other what I tipped. I heard a hushed«5» and the first server said(in relation to him thinking I would tip $ 3) «oh, nevermind. better than I thought.» I’m honestly really irritated at the entire ordeal. I’d like to go back, but not if I’m going to be treated like that again.

I had the most fantastic time here!!! When you walk in, the place is huge and there are tons of seating options: in the main dining area, off to the right there is another seating area and in between there are various oyster bar areas to sit, as well. Since I wanted to be as close to the action and take as much in as possible, I choose the oyster bar area that’s just to the right. The oyster-pro employee behind the counter didn’t have the best or happiest personality but I didn’t let his attitude ruin my fun :) Since I don’t know oysters by name, I asked him, the expert, to choose for me. Great decision! They were ALL so good! He paired them in two’s for each of his choices. Then, I went in for another half dozen. It was glorious!!! Next time I’m in NY I’d be up for this place again. Such a foodie happy time I had.

I’ve heard so much about Grand Central Oyster Bar. This NYC landmark has been around for 60 years. I’m glad that I actually visited the place! I went with a really good friend. First off, I love that GCOB is a separate restaurant under Grand Central. They have their own closed off restaurant. Less noise and more secluded. Secondly, I love the dark wooden bar and stools. Made me feel like I was in Cheers. But not. Thirdly, I love the raw bar selection. So many wonderful varieties of bivalves! So excited to try more! The menu has a vast selection of raw oysters and wines. So much so, that my friend found it overwhelming. I gladly found a dry white wine(Alsace) and told the waiter that my friend preferred Malpeques(from PEI) and I wanted Belon Wild(Maine). Our waiter told us he doesn’t like Malpeques and they were out of Belon Wild. So we let him pick. He got us 2 Cape May Salts(NJ), 2 Island Creeks(Mass), and 2 GigaCup select(Washington). I loved the clean plump sweetness of the Cape May Salts(surprise! It’s from Jersey!) and the mild brininess and huge size of the Gigacups. The Island Creek tasted like dirty water and sand. Not a fan. I needed some of that Alsace to wash out the flavor. My major problem was with how the oysters were not cleaned well. The dirt and oyster shell pieces on the meat of the oyster made it hard for us to completely enjoy the oysters. I saw my friend spitting up dirt and sand 3 – 4 times for 3 oysters. I also found sand and oyster shell in the oyster juice. But I hope to come back another day to taste a clean delicious oyster.

My friend and I ordered the Beville platter(4 oysters and 4 clams) and the fried calamari. The fried calamari was good, nothing out of the ordinary. The raw clams are my favorite! So meaty, juicy and fresh. I personally like them more than the oysters. I’ll like to go back for the clam chowder… BUT…the one thing my friend and I did not like was the service. It was fine at the beginning but towards the end, my friend noticed our server and another lady looking at our table a lot. Mind you, there were a lot of tables still open and there were people who were still seated who were seated before us. So I don’t know what the issue was. But things didn’t get any better. Once we finished each plate, they quickly came to take it away. One by one. We felt rushed and they weren’t trying to hide it. We definitely didn’t want to stay for more drinks(even though we were thinking of having another). And while we were signing our checks, my friend pointed out that our server was just watching our table and waiting. Soon as we put our pens down, he quickly came over and took it away. And we got up and left. It just sucks when the poor service over powers your whole experience.

I had good memories with this restaurant. Me & my friend decided to try this place because we love oyster and this location is easy to meet up with someone because its inside grand central terminal. Came here on a saturday night. Place is huge and its divided into rooms. We sat on the bar type corner. We start ordering oyster & wine. The red wine that we got is perfect! Its very smooth. They have lots of types of oyster & I’m not a good in picking which one is the best so we randomly picked whichever sounds good. We ask the server advice & told us that we picked the good one. We ordered a lot! Its just us 2 for that big oysters but we have no idea how it looks until our order came and surprisingly its huge chunk of oysters. Its not those regular oyster that every bar has. I think I picked the wrong one. Haha! Its not my type of oyster. After 3 oysters I’m done. The good thing is since we sat on the bar theirs this random guys that sat next to us. I offered them the oysters that we didn’t finished. I don’t wanna waste it. They accept it and the good thing about it is they offer us a free desserts. Yup! They order 2 desserts for us & we started chit chatting. How nice is that! We just went their for oyster & we made new friends! We ordered some soup too. The soup is pretty good. Its very creamy and with some mussels in it. Yummy! Overall this place is great but next time I need to change my orders. Workers are great! They’re very talkative & funny.

Living in New York all my life, its my first time coming to Grand central. Being that this place has been my bookmarked place for a while, I finally came to try their oysters. As I walked into the restaurant, I was puzzled since it seemed like they were all separate restaurants within. It was a very rustic environment where they had different sections. I sat at the round long tables where the waiter was in the middle. The waiter was kind and quickly served me a plate of biscuit and sesame cracker with butter and a cup of cold water. The biscuit and crackers were so good I wanted to as for another plate. Being that I had other restaurants to visit this day, I decided to only order from the raw bar. I ordered the Medley Shellfish platter to share with my girlfriend. The platter consisted of 10 oysters(5 west coast and 5 east coast), 2 clams, 2 shrimp cocktail, and 3 mussels. This cost about $ 37.25 which is not bad since the oysters here about $ 2.75-$ 3.25 a piece. They were all very fresh and was served quick. I would probably come back to try all the other oyster selections but I wasn’t all too pleased with their entrees and price. Even though price wise I don’t reccomend this place, it’s still worth the experience. Fresh seafood and so much to explore outside in Grand Central itself, why not stop by?

I met a friend for lunch here a few weeks ago. I made reservations but then decided to sit in the bar area since they don’t seat you until your full party is present. We ended up deciding to eat in the bar area. We shared an order of a dozen oysters which were divine and our own entrees. I thought I would give the tuna burger a try and I wish I didn’t. It was dry and really tough. I had to order a side of fries which became my entrée. I would stay away from the lunch«sandwiches.»

We were in the area after friend’s bday karaōke celebrations(to my shame, they made me sing!), and since we both never been to this place before, we decided to check it out. It’s OK. Décor and menu a bit stuffy and tired, but oysters were fresh and meaty. Drinks selections is not the best, so we just ordered Jack & Coke to keep it simple. I guess it’s good to visit once, or for tourist crowd, but I doubt it will be on my list of places to revisit. The atmosphere simple not there.

I’ve been here a couple times long before I started working across the street from Grand Central. It’s a landmark and a convenient pit stop for some seafood and drinks. Their bar area could be enlarged a bit, as it was already packed by the time the clock hit 5pm on a weeknight. I hadn’t thought of a good place for a meet up, so I thought this would be a good last minute resort — all subways/trains to take off from once we’re done. I wasn’t wrong but I also was close to doing an eye roll looking around and seeing 9⁄10 tables were tourists. If you want good oysters and good deals, go to Crave. This place is on the pricey side for mediocre food and drinks. it’s also in dire need of a good facelift.
