Like any true New Yorker I know my pizza. We all have our favorite place to go for a quick slice and Frank’s is definitely up there on my A-list. Being a big thrifter, I often frequent the Goodwill and Salvation Army stores on ‘Thrift Row’, the area on East 23rd Street between 2nd&3rd Avenues. Before my hunt I always start with a few fresh slices at Frank’s. Voted in 1991 the ‘best pizza slice above 14th street’ by NY Press, it may still be as I haven’t found a slice to match it anywhere in my neighborhood(Hell’s Kitchen) or nearby Times Square. They’ve been around since 1949 so you know they’re good. The secret to the deliciousness is in their sauce. Dubbed«Carmelo’s zesty Sicilian», it’s tangy and sweet and takes their $ 2 slice to a different level. The place isn’t much for décor and there aren’t tables to sit at but there’s plenty of counter space to park you butt and chow down at. They’re also right next to the historic Gramercy Theatre, a music venue that opened in 1937. Concertgoers have been eating at Frank’s for years. The only bad thing I have to say is that Frank’s doesn’t have Parmesan cheese to sprinkle on your slice. How in this day and age a pizza shop doesn’t have Parmesan on the table for it’s customers is beyond me, but hey, their pizza is so damn good it doesn’t really need it.

This might be a good enough slice for cash-strapped students, stoners, and tourists, but this is strictly $ 1-pizza quality that costs two bucks. Spongy, tasteless crust and a weirdly sweet sauce served warm. Halfway in when I decided that it wasn’t worth the calories to finish.

The pizza definitely didn’t look good, but it was pretty good for $ 2. Good crust, decent sauce, skimpy on the cheese. They heated it up and it came out like warm. Part of that is my fault for not telling them to heat it back up. so, not my favorite place but at $ 2 if I was craving pizza and walking by, I’d go again.

Not the Greatest Slice. But overall a Great NYC Pizza Joint.

Was looking for something quick. Had the sausage calzone. Was average. The sauce was bland and didn’t have much sausage and no cheese. Looked better before they put in the oven to warm.

As a former Baruch student, I frequented this place going back to the late 1980’s. For the longest time, this was the place to go for a student with no $$. I went back today and was just flat out disappointed. It was bland and bland. It just wasn’t a Frank’s pizza. The sauce had no taste and the cheese was just ok. What happened ? Hope things get better

Is this place really closed? I have not been in the area for a couple of months. When I was a poor graduate student at Baruch, this was my go to hole in the wall pizza joint. Great tasting and fast service

Terrible, terrible pizza. In a city known for pizza, this place is amongst the worst. Stay away.

This is my favorite $ 2 pizza. Hits the spot every time. I love the sauce, cheese and crust.

Like others have mentioned, I went to this joint back when I went to SVA years ago. This place was awesome & fed me throughout my college years & within my student budget. The pizza was great when Frank & his crew were around. Pizza was always fresh & tasty due to the high traffic. It was always packed. You couldn’t go wrong with either a slice or a square. Since there’s new management, I don’t think the pizza is as great as what it was but not horrible as some have mentioned. IMO, The pizzas still have the same zesty sauce, thick cheese & crunchy crust overall. I’d still drop over for a slice or 2 when I’m in the area. Frank’s pizza is still great whether you’re on a budget or not. And I think they’re better than any other pizzerias around the area for that price. I would’ve giving this review 5 stars if Frank was still around.

I used to eat here all the time when I took night classes at Baruch. I haven’t been back for several years but I was in the area last night so I stopped by for a couple of slices. The pizza is still as incredible as I remember from my Baruch days. The cheese is never oily, the sauce is sweet and the crust is yummy. At $ 2 a slice it’s one of the best deals in NYC. The place is tiny and nondescript but don’t let this fool you. Frank’s is one of the best pizzerias in NYC.

Absolutely disgusting! I ordered a cheese pizza and it was so bad. The dough was incredibly soft, not the good soft either, soft as in not cooked all the way and the type of dough you buy from the grocery store to make your own pizza at home. The mozzarella cheese was tasteless, greasy, poor quality and FAR from fresh. The sauce tasted like pure tomato paste mixed with loads of sugar. The oddest thing. I called Frank’s Pizza to return it and the guy was an incompetent jerk. He acted as if he knew nothing about my order. He fought with me by saying he watched the chef make the pizza himself fresh in the kitchen. If a customer is unhappy, the last thing you do is fight with them and say the pizza is in returnable. I asked for his name and he asked me «What?» I kid you not, three times! He was asking me «what?» to stall and come up with a fake name, because he knew he was wrong and knew I wanted to talk to his boss about him! He say’s his name was Travis. Frank’s Pizza not only has disgusting pizza, but disgusting employees. Do yourself a favor and NEVER order from Frank’s Pizza. Ughhhh, so gross!

For my money, this is the best $ 2 slice around. The sauce has nice flavoring and it’s not a traditional New York style slice. Crust is just a bit thicker. Maybe you like that, as I do. Maybe you do not. Well, you should give it a shot and see what you think. Not that I am telling you what to do or anything, but hey, just making a suggestion. Just a suggestion, my friend. Do whatever you want!(eat at frank’s) Fin.

My husband is an SVA alum and always reminisced fondly about this spot: his go-to pizza spot. Now that I work around the corner in Flatiron, I had to try this legendary slice for myself. Definitely impressed enough to make another visit — though the slices are $ 2 each, I thought it was worth it — sauce is slightly sweet and tangy, cheese creamy, and perfect crispy crust. Great spot, especially when I’m not feeling the exorbitant Chelsea /Flatiron prices.

Been around for years. Always OK! But recently they changed they way they make pizza. Not as good anymore. Tasty but just OK. Better than the $ 1. places around.

I used to go to this tiny pizza place all the time when I was a student at Baruch College. The price has gone up slightly over the years, but is is still a reasonable $ 2 for a regular or a sicilian slice. What makes the slices good is the crispy crust and the rich, sweet tomato sauce.

All around Baruch there is a sign for $ 1 pizza. While that’s great for my pockets there is something about an authentic looking pizza shop that makes you want to spend the extra cash… for a real new York slice, am I right? I mad the decision to grab a corner Sicilian slice and garlic knots before class one night. I asked for an extra hot slice so that the time I got to my classroom, my slice would be a little more than warm. I couldn’t wait for gooey cheese either. Boy was I disappointed. I’m sorry but my slice was just warm when I got to class and it seemed like my slice was old. My pizza wasn’t even hot enough for the cheese to move or dangle from my bite. I was not happy but hungry so I ate it anyway. I moved on to the garlic knots and while soft and light they had too much garlic on it for me. It was drenched in garlic and oil that when I squeezed it, oil poured out. I ended up throwing them out which hurt my heart because I love bread! This was not what I expected, but maybe I caught them on an off day. Atleast that’s what I’m hoping. Because I’m a sucker for corner Sicilian slices I will make one more attempt before the semester ends. Hopefully my update it positive!

Decent slice of cheap pizza. On a whim before catching my flight out of NYC, I decided to grab a piece of NYC pizza. Their signs proudly proclaim«since 1949» so I figured it would be okay. Quick service and friendly staff. Definitely not a memorable slice but does the job of you need a quick, cheap bite. I got the pizza slice with mushrooms, onions, sausage, pepperoni and cheese. I feel the sauce could have been more flavorful. Cheese was used very sparingly. I did like the crust.
