As a black lesbian in NYC, there are times when I just want to be around other members of the glbt community of color. The lesbian scene doesn’t really offer an ethnic women of color venue at this time. So, Chi Chiz fills my demand. To me, this little bar takes my imagination to a world similar to that of the Harlem Renaissance, only it happens to be gay. A small venue, good drinks, tasty food, a pool table that is always being utilized by great players, spades games and very friendly gay men.

Stopped into Chi Chiz Saturday night for a few drinks which were very strong! This Black gay bar has a mostly older crowd of queens, down low brothers, and a few lesbians sprinkled here and there. Everyone was really really nice. I don’t know if it was because we came in as a gang of femme chicks and made a little bit of an entrance or what. I did smell food in the air, but I didn’t see where it was coming from. I know next time to scope that out when I first get in there. The music was really good. Mostly hip-hop and R&B, but every song that came on was a banger. There was a pool table and DJ in the back and very few places to sit in this very small bar. Definitely a good spot to start out your night.

Two pasty white boys show up to sing karaōke. One makes the fatal mistake of singing a Beyonce song. Mayhem ensues. Strong 2-for-1 drinks, and a richly talented, interesting, and hilarious crowd. Much love.

Chi-Chiz scares the hell out of me. I mean it. The drinks are cheap, the music is fine(the sound system is abysmal, however) and the place generally has enough room that you aren’t squished up against the front window(well, unless you so desire, I guess.) The staff is pleasant, courteous and efficient. The clientèle… Well, let’s just put it this way: There is some fine man-candy in the building, but if you are a slight and unassuming white boy, be prepared to have your share of thieves and hustlers hurl themselves in your direction. The establishment is nice enough, but don’t get so sauced that you can’t handle yourself. It can be a dangerous place if you don’t know how to spot(and call out) bullshit.

NYC too tame??? Where are all the raunchy 70’s gay bars you dreamed about when you were a kid in OshKosh? Well, brother, it’s all right here and wow, are you going to be disappointed. Scary, nasty, violent, aggressive and skank. If you’re a skinny white boy with prison rape fantasy’s, then this is your place. Or, if you’re a chill local wannabe thug on the DL, then welcome! Put your big olé Tim’s up on a chair and suck back a cheap beer. That rarefied, sophisticated NYC sleaze is long gone, but if you still want it down low and nasty, ChiChiz is serving.
