can someone teach these people the meaning of ‘CONSISTENCY’ ordering from this place is like playing lotto, you hope to win but only if it’s your lucky day. you can order the same dish 3 times a day and you will get 3 diffrent versions. sorry no more ordering from here.

As an Indian, I can say this is not worth the money. The dishes advertised as tandoori are really not from tandoor or at least didn’t feel the taste of it. The paneer was rather grilled. Also, the masalas and spices are there but not mixed in right proportion to get that wow affect. There a lot of better authentic Indian places for the same price.

It’s about time I wrote a review about my favorite Indian restaurant and favorite Seamless selection! If I took time to do the math, I’m sure I’ve spent hundreds ordering Amla’s Chicken Tikka Masala take-out special. It’s become almost a weekly thing for me. I had a friend visit and I ordered two of them. We had enough food for two days! And she said it was the best Indian good she’s ever had. Fluffy, basmati rice, flavorful curries, amazing naan and vegetable samosas — everything is on point! I love their sauces, too. And their prompt delivery service. I can always count on Amla to put care into their cuisine.

I never write reviews for Unilocal, but i had to for Amla! This place should be packed day and night because the food is so delicious and the service is great! The buffet is truly fantastic! We’ve been going for the past three weeks after being deprived of indian food since moving to morningside heights, and we decided to make it a weekend thing! The buffet offerings for the veggie curries and the appetizers change and they’re all really good. The tandoori is perfectly marinated and cooked. The nan is always freshly made and served per table, rather than left on the buffet table. The price is really unbeatable but I would definitely pay more because it is worth it. There seem to be several indian restaurants in the area, and we tried delivery a couple times but compared to those places, the food at alma is so flavorful without being overbearing and the staff is so kind. the décor is also very nicely done. highly recommended if you live in the area! this place deserves more customers!

I came here in a party of five people around 9 pm on a Thursday evening. We were the only people there at the late hour, and the staff were very attentive. When we sat down, they poured us water and served us poppadom. I think it’s just how it tastes, but it was too salty for me. The poppadom also came with three chutneys, all of which were good. As a party, we ordered five dishes including the chicken biryani, palak paneer, achari mushrooms, and achari gosth. There was also a paneer dish whose name I forget; it was like two little sandwiches made of cheese filled with something very gingery topped with a sauce and served with a tiny salad on the side. We ate the curries with rice, which was served with crunchy, fried strands of something on top. The food overall was okay. We hadn’t specified, and they made everything faintly spicy – I was fine with it. The lamb was very tender; everything was cooked well. However, the three curries weren’t distinctly flavorful(taking into account that two of them were very similar). I didn’t try the chicken biryani. My favorite dish was probably the other paneer one; I liked the strong ginger flavor. However, I wasn’t very impressed with the food overall. Also, the portions were on the smaller side.

I live in Brooklyn but I still make it a point to come out here once or twice a month. I recommend having the Coorgi Chicken Curry and Vindaloo. The Garlic Naan and Butter Chicken is solid too. I love how authentic the flavor is. I haven’t had a good Indian meal in a long time and a constant pet peeve of mine is when they make the mint chutney too sweet and watery but not at Amla! The papad is free flowing and the mint chutney is made with dahi as it should be. You should never regret a meal here. The waiters are darlings and the food is wonderful. 5 stars for them.

The only reason I am giving them 1 star is so that I can be allowed to write a review. We ordered a dosa to start with but the dosa was soggy and was not fresh ATALL! I was very disappointed, especially at $ 13 for a single dosa. For our entrée we ordered a Tarka daal and paneer tikka masala. The paneer tikka masala was absolutely disgusting. It was so sweet that it tasted more like a dessert and the flavors were terrible for a dish that’s apparently«a customer favorite». They clearly used a tomato paste rather than fresh ground tomatoes, which is outrageous again considering the price. I made the waiter aware. He took the dish back and came back minutes later with the same dish with just red chilli added to the dish and the sweetness still overpowering everything. He ignored every other attempt that I made to explain that the dish was way too sweet. I do not recommend this restaurant.

After our first two choices of the night were bogged down by hour long waits, we wandered into Amla with no wait at 7:30PM on a Saturday night. Food: 4⁄5. Oh man, the chutneys served with the papadum were awesome. They served a green, minty one, a red, hot pepper one, and a sweet pomegranate one. I highly recommend mixing the pomegranite and pepper — the sweet and spicy combo was great. We got an appetizer order of Anar Onion Bhajia; these crispy little appetizers were wonderful, and they paired very nicely with the chutneys. We also had an order of the vegetable biryani; the dish was flavorful and aromatic, although I question how much side of yogurt actually improved the dish if at all. The palak paneer had sufficient spinach, but the paneer itself I felt was a bit lacking. That said, piling the dish onto our order of garlic naan, there really wasn’t much to complain about! Service: 4⁄5. I lost count of how many times they refilled my water! It was never empty. They waiters were quick and quiet, so don’t expect too much conversation.

Great food! I’ve only ordered delivery here, but have been very pleased. Great daily special — appetizer and entrée plus rice and naan for $ 15 and the servings are generous. I’ve had the vegetable korma, onion fritters, ginger gobhi, all delicious. And the staff are delightful and helpful to make recommendations. A great takeout option — can also order online and they have a pretty large delivery radius.

My wife and I ordered delivery for Valentines Day and it was excellent! We both ordered chicken vindaloo and the meat was high quality and the sauce was savory, nicely spiced and vinegary as it should be. The mulligatawny soup was very good and the onion bhajia, crisp fritters, were excellent. we ordered the delivery special for $ 15. So it was a great value, too! Delivery was right on schedule. if you order on line they send you approximate time of delivery. My favorite of the Indian restaurants above 96th. A repeat of this order has me lowering my rating. Still good but not 5 star.

My favorite Indian restaurant on the UWS. I almost always get takeout but have eaten in a few times. It’s a bit more than I personally like to spend on a meal(I’m frugal.), but the food is worth it. I often get the chicken tika masala. The takeout special($ 15) is available all day and comes with naan, an appetizer, and rice. The staff is very friendly. The ambiance is nice and quiet in the restaurant – it is almost never full, so always easy to get a table without a reservation, even on a weekend night.

We really like this restaurant and order delivery a couple times a month. Very tasty, good quantities and they always manage to get the spice level right for my husband(spicy) and me(very mild). He likes Chicken Chettinad and Saag. My favs are Lamb Korma and Chicken Tikki Masala and the Saffron. Delivery is fast and hot.

Stopped by on a Tuesday night while in between work and a meeting with friends. The place was empty, at 6 pm, which was a bit bizarre. The service was fantastic, the food came out hot, which I really really appreciate. It seems like too often in NYC food comes out warm. I got the vegetable curry with garlic naan. The garlic naan was delicious! The vegetable curry was also very good. They have a delicious and very unique rye cracker served with pickled radish and mint. The place is a little bit pricey, but the ambiance and food are great! I’ll be back.

I had a chance to visit this restaurant last night for a dinner with my girlfriend. This place is amazing. The atmosphere, staff, food quality, cleanliness everything was way above expectations. I will come back and recommend Amla for anybody wants to try Indian food in an authentic and lovely environment. One more thing: when you visit, ask for Mr. Nayan. This guy is a genius. He took care of our table and we loved it.

Honestly not that good. Maybe being from li and having queens with more authentic tasting indian restaurants near by left my expectations too high. Decided to go americanized and had the chicken tikka masala. It was ight, and for the reviewer who said try the fennel tomato soup… Dont. Not good at all. Watered down tomato soup. Blech. Service was alright

Went here for a weekend buffet on a cold December day. One star for the ambiance — while not the Four Seasons, Amla was a pleasant experience. It was quiet, perfect for a reflective afternoon lunch either alone or with friends. One star for the cleanliness and service — clean, neat, intuitive. Good furniture, nice touch with the steel /copper drinking glasses. One star for the value — While it was an all-you-can-eat-buffet, as a vegetarian I had several vegetable dishes, channa masala, standard jeera rice, some lackluster, cold desserts, I paid $ 17 including tip — not the most affordable quick meal, but for freshly-made roti, good saag, and a decent, yet fresh salad, some bhel, and friend-but-not-all-gross aloo tikki, this place was worth it. The saag had a clean, simple taste, allowing me to get me enough vitamin A for a few days. On the other hand, I was practically scared to dip into the greasy-looking vegetable and paneer dishes, and even dabble into the dessert, so I didn’t go there as I did not want to risk it during finals. I can’t give it a full star for the actual product, the food. I don’t think the food was up there, although the freshly made roti to accommodate my no-egg request was a really a kind gesture. However, they could have certainly done better. Indian food is supposed to be hearty and delicious — use the oil and ghee to your advantage, not to overkill! It’s kind of hard to mess up staple dishes, good thing they didn’t mess up the saag. I certainly can’t give Amla the coveted fifth star for excellence(my version of a Michelin rating). Keep in mind my own biases: I am vegetarian /vegan, Indian, spent the past year living in India getting fabulous fresh meals daily, and I am a New Yorker /San Franciscan(think an innate knowing for infallible world cuisine meets ayurvedic eating habits and Alice Waters), and this was my first buffet place in New York in almost a decade. All in all, A-OK.

The lunch buffet exceeded my expectations. A bit pricey for lunch but well worth it for quality indian food and excellent dining atmosphere. The lamb vindaloo was delicious and I could have eaten just that dish and been a happy customer. I will be back!

Best Indian in the neighborhood. The Chicken Tikka Masala was amazing and the sauces were great to dip with some garlic naan. On point. I did not enjoy the Chicken Samosa. I was expecting a flatter pastry stuffed with meat. What I got was a pastry stuffed 3 inches high in a dry crumbled chicken. It didn’t taste too bad but it was a mess to eat and very greasy. Very easy to order online, very fast delivery.

Have tried every Indian restaurant between 96 St and 116 St and this is the best! A very varied menu. Dishes are true to the description. Food is well prepared-you can taste the distinct spices! A true feast of the senses. Tip-for some reason the delivered food is not as good so eat at the restaurant!
