I’m not sure why no one has flagged this place as closed but they’ve been gone for more than a year. This was my favorite Indian restaurant in the city. I’ve been a regular since 1995. I wish I knew if they opened a place somewhere else as I’ve not been able to find a place that I like nearly as much. I saw a new Indian restaurant recently took its place. The menu did not look encouraging. The décor and atmosphere are aimed at a completely different clientele. I’ll pass…

People working there seem nice, and the food wasn’t disgusting or anything, so I wouldn’t want to knock it for kicks. But there is some kind of issue with their food preparation that they absolutely have got to work out before I ever recommend this place to anyone. Not worth the low prices… honestly, pretty sketch.

Assorted Appetizers Thali: samosa, vegetable fritters, vegetable pekora, banana pekora, papadam. ‘Twas the meal consumed betwixt my roomie and myself. Acceptable. I probably could have consumed a dozen banana pekoras and been a happy camper. Otherwise, I’m not a big fan of puri stuffed with American cheese that stuck like glue to both my plate AND the roof of my mouth, nor am I a fan of garlic naan encrusted with burnt garlic salt. Friendly enough service, but pass. Peace.

I have never eaten at Calcutta Café, but I have ordered delivery several times(about once a week for the last two years in fact). I’m not going to say that this is the best indian food I’ve had in NYC(I prefer south-Indian to northern), but this is HANDS-DOWNTHEBESTDELIVERY service in the Harlem/Morningside Heights area. This is not to say the food is bad, it is in fact quite good. In particular, their chicken Vindaloo is great(stay away from the samosas though). What keeps us ordering though is A) they’ve never messed up an order, B) the food never takes longer than 30 – 35 minutes(even in rain and on a busy night) to get to us(and we live a good 10 minute walk away), C) they are reasonably priced, and D) they are super nice. If every business conducted themselves like this, they’d have an easier time keeping customers. In a city where delivery rules like no other place, it is shocking how bad most delivery service is. Not Calcutta Café… they are the model for customer service.

This is the best Indian food in the neighborhood and is exceptionally reasonable too. Everything is good here but I like the chicken tikka masala and the paratha best. The service is great with the same few friendly waiters who get to know you. I’ve tried many other Indian restaurants in the neighborhood and this is by far the best.

My girlfriend and I thought the food was delicious until we found a cockroach in my vegetable soup.

I went for the Sunday dinner special, which is $ 11.95 and gets you a drink and all you can eat buffet. It’s a great deal, nice atmosphere, the staff is very friendly. This place also has specials throughout the week, or brunch on the weekends. They had a good selection for the buffet. Some of the food was a bit bland, but not all; most were very good. This is a good place to go if you are trying Indian food for the first time because with the buffet you get a nice array to choose from and it’s not overwhelming. You definitely get a great deal here, and it’s also very clean. Overall it’s a nice place which I would go to again.

Calcutta Café is my favorite Indian restaurant in the area. I particularly like their Sunday dinner buffet($ 11, includes a glass of wine or can of soda). The food tastes fresh and the restaurant is very cozy. The staff is very friendly and greets you like you’ve been coming there for the past 10 years. Most of the other patrons are families with kids and young couples, adding to the neighborhood feel of the place. The buffet always has one or two meat choices and one or two vegetarian choices, plus naan, rice, banana pakora(my favorite!), and rice pudding. I am generally wary of buffets but this one is very clean. The food is tasty and not too spicy. The only thing I don’t like is the naan — it’s a bit too salty for me. I’ve never actually ordered off the menu, but the Sunday buffet is a great deal and I definitely recommend it.

It was hard deciding between a 2 or 3, but this place has pretty bland Indian food. The waiter was really nice and friendly, but the food needed some more Indian zest and freshness. It was inexpensive, and cleanly decorated, but the place just gave me a dingy feeling.

i’ve never eaten at this restaurant, but the lunch specials and the home delivery are excellent. The food always manages to arrive in under twenty minutes and best of all, it is always warm and the perfect temperature. Aftering living in India for some time, I would say the food is comparable!
