Quiet little jewel. «Tavern» in the truest sense of the words. Bartender/owner is super chill and a great conversationalist to boot. What little food that is offered on the menu is surprisingly good and super-inexpensive, as are the beer prices. If you want old school, one football game on one TV, and some company and conversation, I strongly suggest you pay a visit to «the Dutch»

This is a good place to relax, read the paper and get away from the nonsense of bank street in New London. The place has a very rustic feel which tells me they have been around a fairly long time(probably 30 years +). Most of the regulars who come in here are a bit older 45+ and the staff is very nice. I don’t like the fact that they don’t accept credit cards, but that can be over looked due to the fact that they don’t have young kids coming in there getting wasted on Fridays and Saturdays. Overall a good place to go if you want to enjoy a beer with little to no noise.

It’s people like Eric that we wanna keep away from a classic spot. If your that guy, please go somewhere else. Otherwise sit down, order a beer maybe a piece of beef jerky and enjoy. Lunch is great if your in the area.

This is the one time that Unilocal let me down. This place is awful. It’s only a cash bar, which doesn’t make much sense this day in age. The bartender refused to serve our group around 930 and we were all stone cold sober. He turned away good business and has lost it forever as a result. I would highly recommend staying as far away as possible from this bar, unless you want to spend your night in a cramped, musty bar with a creepy bartender and no music. Stay away!

It’s a great bar to drink alone. The place is a dive in a good way and the beer is cheep.

As a native of New London, it’s easy to be biased but simply put the Dutchy is everything a watering hole should be. If you can find a more unpretentious place to have a beer, go there instead — but you won’t. Owner Peter Detmold is also lead singer of New London’s finest band The Reducers. Fond memories of sweaty dancing at the El N’ Gee to The Reducers followed by more beers at the Dutchy. Amen.

This place is a complete dive! I love that! sometimes there will be poets performing or a lone guitar player. Sometimes it is just people hunched over papers. Sometimes it is a gaggle of college kids airing it out away from campus. You never really know what to expect but it is definitely an experience. The place is pretty comfortable for a small bar and I love to grab a bite and several beers and just lose a few hours in the quiet darkness. This is absolutely one of those don’t miss type of places.

Great pub, friendly bartenders and generally good vibe in this place. Perfect for the after-work drink.

If I owned a small bar, ideally… this is exactly what it would be like.

Living seven years in New London I spent a good deal of time here. To say it was my favorite bar is an understatement. Oh, and I owned a bar myself :-). Peter and Martha are two of the most amazing people. Lunch(served till 3pm) was always amazing. Peter makes the best chili(just add a bit of hot sauce). If it’s busy, be patient. It’s worth the wait!

The Dutch Tavern is one hell of a watering hole. I’m far from a regular but I try to make it there when I’m in New London. It always seems like there’s a lot of people there but it never seems crowded. Plus you can’t go wrong with the $ 1.50 Schaefer cans! My only regret is that I haven’t made it there to try the lunch yet!

How can you go wrong with cans of Schaefer for $ 1.50 apiece, while drinking with an elderly Dave Chappelle? Enough said.

A local hangout and a favorite haunt of writer Eugene O’Neill, it is said to be one of the oldest continuously operated taverns in all of New England. While we did not have an opportunity to partake of the hamburgers($ 3!), which are rumored to be the best in town, we were able to spend time enjoying some local beer. The atmosphere is rich with history and the owners give great service.

Stop reading this review and just go there. Seriously. This institution represents everything that’s right with New London. Just bring cash on you and don’t piss off Peter, the owner.

The Dutch is the place to see Classic Characters from New London. They have a variety of beers and also serve wine. It is a historic landmark off of State Street… rumor has it Eugene O’Neill used to drink here. ??? Can anyone corroborate? Note to visitors– it gets hot in here when its crowded… dress in layers.
