Big City Diner – Kailua

Really good service, friendly staff. Local kind diner food and beer on tap. Simple diner but much better then Denny’s or any thing like that! Also they have some organic produce and vegetarian and gluten free options! Awesome! Try the bred pudding pretty Ono! I am stuffed leaving the restaurant, with such big portions you may have left overs! Lots of options on the menu. I would eat here again. The only thing I would complain about is the crooked, sticky tables outside on their patio, but I can for sure look past that! My boyfriend had the loco moco over friend rice he said it was Ono!

Very average. 2 eggs over easy, small block of hash browns and a few slivers of lousy Portuguese sausage. Coffee very anemic.
Wife had our first taste of Loco Moco.
Was pretty good. They coax you into getting it over fried rice and then charge you without telling you.

Yuck. Had the meat loaf one bite was all I could stand. No flavor, and brown gravy is for the high school cafeteria mystery meat. Never had white rice vice the mashed potatoes.

The food was okay, nothing special. I had the Big Burger.
Service was super slow at first. Took our waiter at least 15 minutes to come and take our order. I give him a pass this time because he was working outside and inside.

Can’t review the food yet, but I’m about 10 minutes in and can say without a doubt that the young «men» (that’s really a stretch; they’re definitely not men, but rather rude assholes) have no respect for the customers. Right after we placed our order they immediately began criticizing it — «they don’t like making ramen». Then take it off the menu or lack of menu. They close at midnight yet nothing is available. Not sure I understand the motivation behind this supposedly popular place. I won’t be back and I’m here for another 9 days. I’ll take my money elsewhere.

Don’t place a catering order during the holiday, they lost our catering order on Christmas Day and refuse to make our order. They sent us to Kaneohe location to place a order. Terrible customer service on Christmas Day. Our family party was at 6:30 in Kailua, by the time we drove to Kaneohe and back it was 7:45pm, our super seniors and seniors were hungry! No apology from either location or explanation or compensation, etc.

Jack of all dishes, master of none, and certainly not worth the money. We guessed it wouldn’t be great while looking at the menu since they have far too many different dishes. We got the patty-​melt with Cajun fries and a burger with normal fries. The patty-​melt was supposed to be cooked medium-​rare and came out medium (even after I signed the ridiculous Hawaii waiver). The ‘Texas toast’ that the patty-​melt was served on was barely toasted and soggy. And the ‘Cajun’ fries, which cost extra, were nothing more than normal fries with some bland seasoning lazily sprinkled on top of the pile. The meat on both the burger and patty-​melt was bland as well. Add to that a server who was standoffish and not very friendly. We definitely will not be going back.

First time at this location… must say I’m happy of the consistency of awesome service island wide. The food was excellent and enjoyed my wings with fried rice… Husband had the steak and eggs and it was made to perfection. Will definitely be back.

When in Hawaii, I always find time to come here for a meal or two or three. Yes their food is good.
Heck if President Obama comes here, you’ve gotta try it. I have ordered Obama fried rice more than a couple times.
My absolute favorite here is the boneless short ribs, Great flavor, over white rice for this rice head.
Saimen is tastey too.
This place is great for breskfast too. Come here if the line at Boots n Kimo is too long.

I have never understood why people say such good things about this place. My service is always good, but the food is just not. They have a large variety on their menu so I though maybe I was just got the wrong thing so I continued to come and try different things. Everything is just Meh, nothing has any real flavor.

What a delightful experience. Open air seating at bar with excellent service. Thank you Jessica. The chili taco salad was delicious and filling, the drinks were well crafted and generous. Truly excellent people watching too!

Im only rating two stars because usually I like this place but last night my boyfriend and I had the shittiest service ever.
All we ordered was 3 burgers 2 garlic fries and one regular fries our bill was $ 40.
The hostess said our order would take 10 minutes but we waited outside one the benches for OVER HALF AN HOUR!
Braaaaaahhh and the workers kept giving us stink eye through da window like we was fucking criminals the entire time. At one point this Asian kid with the Harry Potter glasses came to the door and I shit you not this fucka gave us da stinkest side eye ever.
Anyway after waiting so long my boyfriend got fed up and went inside to check on the food and it turns out a waitress was told to bring it out to us but she just set it down on some random chair like «oh here’s a bag of food I guess no one wants it» Great, perfect, fucking phenomenal! We get home the burgers are all cold our fried are stale and my boyfriends 11 $ poniolo Burger was missing the poniolo sauce that was supposed to be on the side instead he got ketchup. I understand they’re working they’re busy but come on it’s a simple take out order all we wanted was some tasty quick hot food but instead we got stale cold disappointment and a $ 40 more broke.

The manager Nicole contacted me personally about my experience and took the time to send a letter of apology and a $ 15 gift certificate. I recently tried BCD, again, in Pearlridge and it made me realize that some of the food here is worth dining in. Thank you for the amazing service and Your concerns, Nicole! I’ll be back.

The food is not that great. Typical diner menu. One of our dishee came out with a hair on the very top. We had them make us a new one. We heard grumbling from them because we refused to give back the plate until the new one was made. (We have all had enough experience with same food coming back out that you asked to remake.) The waitress swept up large particles here and there but one of the guys started sweeping around the table. Commos sense, you do not vigorously sweep in front of people that are eating. Your stirring up all kinds of dust and particles. We also witnessed the guy who had gloves on touching all the surfaces. Guess what, he was wiping his face and cleaning the bathroom. Disgusting
We didnt finish our food. We paid and left. You need to teach your employees the basics of food safety and customer service. No we don’t care if you gossip, just dont let your customers hear it.

The manger Nicole sent me a response to my comment. What a Great Lady! She did apologize for what happened and invited me back. I will be back to try again just because she was genuinely interested in what I had to say.

We have been in the area before and occasionally indulge in greasy diner foods. On a Sunday weekend mid day it was pretty empty so that was a good thing. Our server Mike was a really good server and had a great personality. So why the low review? For greasy food, it was just a tad TOO greasy for me. I ordered the big burger with garlic fries and my husband ordered the loco moco. When I picked up my burger, I could already tell the bottom bun was soggy. I hate soggy bread attached to ANY type of sandwich. So when my first bite is mixed with soggy bun… I am not really that happy. Part of me was tempted to ask him to just bring me a full toasted bun that I could remake the sandwich. BUT I didn’t. And the garlic fries which I had to pay extra for… well… they TOO were soggy. Come on guys, soggy, greasy fries? Was the fryer oil not hot enough? Or were you just being LAZY when you cooked it? I dunno, but not my job to check. So I essentially left behind a full plate of fries because to me the amount of greasiness in the fries ruined it.
Husband said the loco moco was ok. But when we left he said it wasn’t so good he’d seek this place out to eat here. Yes, its diner food, but its sub par diner food. We were curious so we checked it out. But having experienced it once, we will pass the next time or just go through the drive through at McDonalds…

Not sure what others were thinking with their reviews. This place is a diner, per the name. So the food is basic and not terribly healthy; that’s a given. [Addendum: Apparently, there are healthy substitution options of which I wasn’t aware: egg whites, brown rice, etc].
But for diner food, our experience here has been excellent. Great burgers, loco moco, chili fries, and brownie dessert. On occasion, we’ve even had the pork chops, the poke, or a salad. We love coming here for a diner fix.
Service has been good; food has come out in a reasonable amount of time. Haven’t had anything alcoholic here, but why would I – it’s a diner! Ask about the specials.

So very disappointed in this BCD. The service was bad, the place looked okay but hey waitresses if you don’t want to work then stay home!
When the waitress came to take our order, it was like she was in a rush. Ahhh did I smell bad? Nope cause I showered before picking up my aunty for lunch. Did I look homeless? Hmmm maybe cause I did have a t-​shirt dress and rubber slippers (oh wait, some of the homeless dress better than me). Am i too dark skinned for BCD? Nope. There’s a local family here. Did I speak in a foreign language? Maybe I must have been talking in a weird language. But duh, can you at least try to be friendly. Or ask us if we wanted something to drink other than water.
But i must say, she did come around to fill up my glass with water quite a bit. But no offer to enter their sweepstakes. I had to ask another waitress (whom seem upset that I had the nerve to ask her) about how to enter. Damn… I’m sticking to the Waipio BCD. At least they are friendly and don’t give any attitude!

So deep around and saw this place. The food was really good. The staff and nice and friendly.
They got some funny names for dishes that we never heard before. (Moco Loco) is one of them. It like hamburger with eggs and rice. I like that one a lot. Also we had baby ribs and some fried rice. The price is okay.

My Bf and I stayed in Kailua with our friend during our trip to Oahu.
Came here on our last day prior to heading to the airport and was greatly satisfied with our simple breakfast.
BCD has great, hearty, local breakfast options from basic eggs/​meat/​potato combos (ie. two eggs with Portuguese sausage, and home fries), to loco moco, and stacked pancakes. Everything ranges from $ 6 – 15 bucks and portions are quite hefty. Coffee was a bit bleh and on the watered down side, but oh wells. Nothing smancy fancy here.
The service was pretty attentive and everyone was nice. We had our coffees and waters refilled consistently without asking.
I wouldn’t come here for «healthy» options, but if you’re in the mood for a hearty breakfast to get your day started, then this is a nice place to do it :)
