Melo’s

This was our only repeat visit to any restaurant on our entire 15 day trip to Spain. It’s very hot, it’s very crowded, it’s very loud and it’s absolutely amazing. This was one of our first stops for dinner on our trip and we compared every croquetta we had at every restaurant to the ones we were served at Melos, none were in the same ballpark and they always left us wanting more — not more of their croquettas but more of Melos’. Oh, and the croquettas aren’t even the best part! This zapatilla sandwich, I don’t know how these are made… like I do but really it’s a toasted ham and cheese sandwich. No one I’ve ever met has ever had a game changing or groundbreaking ham and cheese sandwich. This is it though, it exists: the Zapatilla — a game changing; ground breaking; incredibly large; ham and cheese sandwich. Quick ordering guide; youre a very hungry NFL linebacker? Get a half Zapatilla — its probably enough and it will leave room for finishing up with croquettas. Even if you think you can eat a whole zapatilla, they won’t sell it to you. My wife and I tried to order a zapatilla and a racion of croquettas — nope. We were served a zapatilla and I wasn’t allowed croquettas until we finished that much.
Anyway! If you find yourself in madrid for any reason, do not leave without first visiting Melos bar!

Asked for 2 zapatillas for my friend and I and he said something in spanish, like «no, one zapatilla» and then i was confused because i wanted two, and then the lady next to us translated and said that he doesnt like it when people dont finish their food, and that one zapatilla is more than enough. in hindsight, i was starving and could probably finish an entire zapatilla, but boy, was it amazing. ¹⁰⁄₁₀ will be coming back again

Croquetas. Croquetas. Croquetas. Ah! Y si, zapatillas! Tapas gallegas en uno de los bares que todavía conservan el mismo encanto de siempre y con precios más que razonables :)

Esta reseña se puede resumir en la palabra CROQUETAS, gigantes, deliciosas, crujientes por fuera y liquidas por dentro, con tropezones… Que más se puede pedir, una maravilla para el paladar. Pero no se queda ahí prueba las tostas de lacón con queso de tetilla. Todo en grandes cantidades con precios populares

Mi principal recomendación es que vayáis pronto, abren a las 20.00 y se llena enseguida, el local es pequeño, tiene una primera zona con una barra y al fondo mesas, pero pocas, hay que ir a pedir a la barra. Sus míticas zapatillas de lacón con queso son tal y como te la han descrito, enormes y ricas, pedidla para compartir porque, en serio, son enormes. Las croquetas de jamón también son muy grandes, sin embargo tenían sabor a pimiento, creo que las fríen en el mismo aceite que la tapa de pimientos, eso no me gustó.

Vivo como a 100 metros de este bar y todavía no había logrado encontrar un hueco para entrar. Hueco físico, hablo, porque siempre està lleno. Por fin ayer entrè con dos amigos gallegos que estaban de visita. Madre mía las croquetas y madre míà la empanadilla de bonito!!! La zapatilla no la probamos, era el tercer lugar de tapas y no nos atrevimos con eso tan descomunal. El lugar es pequeño y ruidoso, la comida que probamos, fantàstica. Una pega: con nosotros fueron bastante secos y no muy amables. Hicimos algunas preguntas y las respuestas fueron monosilàbicas y retirando la cara… No les pedíamos el nùmero de cuenta, sino info sobre la comida. En fin, esa sensación ya conocida en Madrid de que te estàn sirviendo comida por favor y no por que vayas a pagarles. Por eso no les doy la quinta estrella. La comida y el precio sí que la merecen.

Mea culpa por no haber ido antes a este sitio emblemático de Madrid, pero ayer por fin le puse remedio, y a las 8.30 de un martes estábamos allí preparadas para hacer los honores.
Comprobamos con regocijo que todavía había una mesa libre que ocupamos rápidamente.
Nuestra elección de la noche fueron croquetas y media zapatilla, como no podía ser de otra manera, pero me quedé con ganas de probar las empanadillas, que vi cómo las hacían y se me hizo la boca agua.
Las croquetas me decepcionaron un pelín, y mira que lo siento, pero no sé, es cierto que el interior es muy líquido y tienen bien de jamón, pero no entrarían en mi top croquetil.
La zapatilla es tremenda, eso sí.
El ambiente muy ruidoso, tanto que no era capaz de escuchar bien a mi amiga estando sentadas a 30 centimetros y muy internacional.

Las mejores croquetas de bar de Madrid. Y del mundo. Grandes, buenas. También recomendables las empanadillas y los pimientos de padrón. Lo único malo es que está siempre muy lleno de gente (por algo será).

Me and my lady for the first time in Madrid. After arriving from the airport, I asked «Are you hungry» «A lot» «Let’s look on Unilocal something open around here, it’s a bit late» «OMG Look at the size of the Sandwich!!!»
So. what’s Melo? Probably the best welcome in Madrid you can ever imagine. It’s fat, it’s loud, it’s oversized. And it’s bloody delicious.
The size of the sandwich you see in the picture is the actual size of the sandwich, and it’s stuffed (yes stuffed is the best term I could use!) with tons of cheese and ham. We took half of it and share it, and it was well enough for both of us. Our liver was already starting to plot a coup d’etat in order to save our body from ourselves. Failed. And then we went for croquetas.
Oh damn croquetas. Just just just try them. Seriously, there are no explanation for them. Unbelievably good.
Melo’s, my body is just happy you live at more than 2 hours of flight from me. Or there would be nowhere to hide.

Hungover? Then set your controls for Melo’s. The legendary «Zapitilla» is the ultimate hangover cure: roasted pork with cheese on thick toast. The HALF zapatilla is plenty for two people, so you’ve been warned. The croquetas are also among the best in Madrid, but they are also huge in size, so again, you’ve been warned. Grab a table with crumbs from the last group, then roll up to the counter to order and wait for them to yell out your order. You may not like yourself after eating at Melo’s, but you won’t be disappointed either. If you’re heading here late, you’ll get the added ‘bonus’ of going through the sketch-​central plaza of Lavapies.

I am NOT a huge fan of when people write reviews without eating at an establishment, but even so, I think it’s important to put my two cents in.
I am very disappointed that I never got to try their food, as I was refused service here twice in the past few days. I am a huge fan of cheap eats, greasy food, and anything with loads of cheese. While on vacation in Madrid, I saw this place right around the corner from where my wife and I were staying. My wife has several back conditions that occasionally render her more or less immobile. We have to travel with a wheelchair for such occasions. After long days of sightseeing, sometimes she just needs to crash at our home base while I bring home dinner. «Not a problem,» thought I, «There’s an awesome sandwich and croqueta joint just a stone’s throw away!»
I walk in, and order the Zapatillo and 5 croquetas. The owner (I presume), nods as he takes my order, but things turn sour when I utter the forbidden words: To go. Suddenly, his expression turns as if I’ve spit in his face. He more or less ushers me out the door.
Bummer. I guess they don’t have take-​out boxes.
A few nights later, I still really want to try this place. My wife is tired after a day trip in Seville in 102 degree weather, but we both arrive at Melo’s with eagerness and excitement… Only to find the entire place packed like a sardine can full of drunken diners. Not an inch of counter space available, nor a table to be seen. My wife needs to sit before her legs fall off, so I usher her back home.
I return to Melo’s alone, determined to give them my money in exchange for delicious morsels. This time, I come armed with a plate and plastic bag, to take my order to go.
I elbow my way through the drunken crowd, dodging beer puddles, slowly working my way to the counter. I end up having to literally lean over a woman at the bar in order to be seen by the owner. After intently staring him down for several minutes, he finally approaches me to take my order. I order, and he shouts my order to the kitchen. Then, I try to hand him my money, and something clicks in his brain. I suppose he made the connection that I wasn’t going to eat there and pay after, and he mentions they don’t do take away. I eagerly produce my own bag and plate to show that I came prepared, and that we could make this work. He shakes his head in disdain and waves me off.
Now, people. I can stand terrible service if it means great food. I can stand hole-​in-​the-​wall joints, grumpy waiters, slow service, less than hot food, and less than cold drinks if the food is good and I’m getting a good deal. What I cannot stand for is being treated poorly on top of being refused service. I still want to eat their food, but I cannot in good conscience offer them either my patronage or money.

¿Madrid en verano es un rollo? Si eres fan de las aglomeraciones, claro. El sábado salimos a dar una vuelta y decidimos acercarnos al Melo’s pensando que iba a estar a reventar como siempre, pero no. Primer puntazo de la noche. Teníamos hambre y pedimos dos croquetas y media zapatilla, su gran clásico. Ya había probado las croquetas, pero volver a recordar ese sabor es una de las cosas que hay que hacer varias veces en la vida, una bechamel impecable y sin escatimaciones en el jamón.
Luego llegó LA ZAPATILLA (en nuestro caso media), una maravilla de pan de pueblo que por dentro está rellena de un lacón exquisito y queso de tetilla con capas, capas y capas. Ni salsas empalagosas, ni nada, solo estas tres cosas, en principio simples, a la plancha. Un imprescindible de Madrid.

I have been living in Madrid for a couple of years now, and stumbled upon this little gem by accident after an evening out.
Melo’s is PACKED on weekends, so try a week night if you want to get a spot at the counter.
BEST CROQUETAS in Madrid (i’m not a huge croquetas fan, but these have to be eaten — they are huge, and melt in your mouth).
Menu is Simple, and portions are Large. Zapatilla (Gigantic toasted sandwich with slices of Galician bread, melted cheese, and ham), Pimientos de Padron, Morcilla (blood sausage), Galician Cheese, Huge Empanadas filled with Tuna… all simple things done to perfection. Chilled White wine served in a ceramic cup, or a chilled beer.
Eat Here if you want an authentic experience!

Exceeded my expectations. I was lucky enough to find this place on Unilocal and avoid a typical tourist restaurant. It was definitely a favorite among locals, with people waiting for the doors to open before 8pm.
The portions were huge — less than 20 euros for two people. The sandwich is a must try!
Go early to snag a table in the back and enjoy!

After being closed for months, it has finally reopened! I came for one thing only, the Madrid legend, la zapatilla. It was definitely worth the wait. Packed with meat and Galician cheese, make sure you order this sandwich to share. A single person cannot finish this beast.
I also tried the croquetas and the wine. Both were delicious and unique. I´d never seen croquetas of this size or wine served in what appeared to be salsa bowls. Get here early to beat the inevitable crowd, and remember, Share La Zapatilla! ¡Aproveche!

Podría resumir mi opinión en dos palabras: me encanta! Todo es muy sabroso y muy rico, no puedo elegir mi plato favorito… Que croquetas! Que zapatilla! Que empanadas! Ya puedo sentir que estoy engordando :)
Uno de mejores sitios en Madrid. Y punto.

Uno de esos sitios míticos, mitiquísimos de Madrid, y especialmente de Lavapiés. Una noche que estábamos de cerveceo por Lavapiés, después de pensar un rato dónde hacer la siguiente parada, alguien mencionó el Melo’s. Casi de inmediato lo descartamos, porque suele estar hasta arriba y veníamos de un sitio prácticamente abarrotado, pero al final hicimos un poder: «pasamos por la puerta, y si vemos que tampoco está tan llenos, nos metemos».
Pues tuvimos una suerte bárbara, vaya que sí, porque había un espacio enorme para nosotros solos.
Nos hicimos fuertes en la barra de la entrada, justo a la derecha. Y pedimos su buen Ribeiro, servido en los tradicionales cuencos. Para rellenar la andorga, hicimos rápidamente un pedido de croquetas y dos zapatillas (éramos seis).
Las croquetas estaban espectaculares. Sigo pensando que es increíble y que no entiendo cómo son capaces de que les queden tan líquidas y ligeras por dentro sin que se desparramen o se estropeen. Necesito ese secreto, porque es tremendo. Son de un tamaño descomunal, y la verdad es que están buenísimas.
Aunque para tamaño descomunal, ahí está nuestra amiga la zapatilla. Un suculento bocadillo de dos panes gigantes, relleno con lacón y con queso de tetilla derretido. Creo que era más grande que el espacio que hay entre mis hombros y SPOILER ALERT: no vas a ser capaz de terminártela tú solo (esta frase la dice alguien que se comió la hamburguesa triple de la Taberna de Manolo, así que sé de lo que me hablo).
Sin embargo, no puedes dejar de comerte esta cosa tan deliciosa, compartirla con amigos y volver a admirar cómo algo tan sencillo puede estar tan rico. Y cuando llegue la carta, flipar con los precios, porque a pesar de su éxito el Melo’s sigue siendo uno de los locales más económicos de toda la ciudad.

¡Qué croquetas! Pero si ahí dentro podría vivir alimentándome solo de su bechamel. ¡Y qué zapatillas! Podría viajar con ellas hasta la China y no naufragaría jamás xD
Un secreto, pero no lo vayáis contando por ahí… Fuimos el miércoles pasado, como a eso de las 22h moreorlesss ¡y no estaba lleno! Teníamos tanto sitio que nos pareció hasta raro y lo disfrutamos muy mucho, aunque la verdad, este sitio no es lo mismo si no hay alguien pegado a ti pasándote su zapatilla por el cogote ;P

Estuve el sábado pasado cenando, guiado por las buenas referencias, y quedé muy, muy contento por la visita.
Es un local muy limpio, pequeño y estrecho. Al fondo hay un mini comedor para el que tenga suerte de pillar mesa.
Imprescindible probar la zapatilla y las croquetas sencillamente geniales. No pudimos probar las empanadillas por falta de hueco en el estómago.
Solo sirven unas ocho cosas. El local lo llevan tres personas. El dueño, sin nervios ni pestañeos, toma los pedidos, cobra y sirve en la barra. Dos chicas: una a la plancha y otra a la freidora y pim pam pum toma lacasitos…
Tanto las empanadillas como las croquetas se pueden pedir por unidades.
La zapatilla puede ser entera o media. Con media pueden catarla cuatro y concluir la cena con una empanadilla y croqueta por cabeza. El ribeiro de la casa 8 euritos y genial servido en taza. Se come de pie y codo con codo
Volveré!!!

Poco se puede añadir al mito de este lugar salvo lo referido a experiencias y emociones que este inefable bar transmite.
Siempre me impresionaron sus gerentes, una pareja madura con los gestos totalmente automatizados por la preparación de las croquetas, las empanadillas y el lacón. Ya ni se miraban entre ellos salvo para hablarse en código zapatilla, alguna leyenda urbana me llegó sobre su separación; de hecho la última vez que estuve sólo le vi a él y a la plantilla de chicas de la que está rodeado. Él, en todos estos años de local hasta los topes, ha desarrollado una especie de sexto sentido espacio-​matemático en el que consigue detectar los pedidos por hacer, sabe gestionar a la perfección y en el orden adecuado para quien van dirigidas las raciones y puede calcular de forma dinámica la cuenta pendiente de todas las personas agolpadas en el interior. Un fuera de serie que si no hubiera tenido un bar igual podía haber sido campeón del mundo de ajedrez.
Luego, como no, está la pitanza. Aquí descansan algunos memorables recuerdos de cebamiento unidos a alguna kurda de Ribeiro bien entrada la noche.

This place gets so crowded you basically have to eat outside, where there’s no dining tables by the way. It was difficult ordering because the people there couldn’t speak English. I really liked the empanadas tapa I got it had fish in it. My two friends split the roast beef sandwich which I think is the best value for your money if you were to go to this place. They give you SO much meat my friends ended up just eating the bread and throwing away a lot of the meat.

Not much can be said about Melos that hasn’t already been posted in other reviews, so I’ll keep this short and sweet: one of the best bars in Madrid, both for authentic pub atmosphere and exquisite Galician quisine. The menu is extremely simple, offering 6 – 8 different plates (lacón a la gallega, croquetas de jamón, pimientos de padrón, morcilla, empanadillas, queso gallego, queso con membrillo & the infamous zapatilla, a sandwich made of lacón on thick slices of galician bread with melted cheese oozing out the sides). EVERYTHING they do is done to perfection, and while you may have to wait on most any night (at least if you get there after 9 like most Spaniards do), it is well worth it. I was first taken here about 8 years ago by a Galician friend who has lived in Madrid for most of his adult life and who comes here whenever he needs some home cooking from his region of origin. Since then, I’ve returned with groups both large and small and even though we may have had to fight for a table and elbow are way to the bar where the bartenders (usually just one principal, an elderly Galician man, and his one or two assistants who mostly just chef up the delicious food) might have overlooked us to first serve a regular from the neighborhood, we’ve always gotten our food in relatively quick time and thoroughly enjoyed shoveling it into our watering mouths. It is an amazingly authentic experience to go there with friends and negotiate who gets to eat that last croqueta, and how to even attempt to cut up the zapatilla!

Si nunca has ido al Melo’s deja todo lo que estés haciendo ahora mismo, llama a dos amigos y preparaos a disfrutar.
El Melo’s es un bar emblemático en Lavapies donde alejarte de la comida hindú que reina en la zona e hincharte a comer croquetas y empanadillas.
Quizás puedas pensar que eso no tiene nada de especial, pero os aseguro que pocas veces habréis comido unas croquetas y empanadillas tan deliciosas como las que se preparan en este sitio, por no mencionar su increíble tamaño!
Además lo asombroso después de lo que os acabo de contar es que el rey de este bar no es otro que un sándwich-​bocadillo llamado la Zapatilla con pan tostado, queso y lacón, que hará que os muráis del gusto.
Finalmente es necesario que a todo esta comida la reguéis con una buena cerveza, pero mi recomendación sin duda es que os pidáis una botella de vino blanco gallego que cuesta 8 € y se bebe en bol.
A comer y beber se ha dicho! :)

Parece mentira pero si, después de muchísimos años oyendo hablar del Melo’s por fin lo he conocido este fin de semana.
No creo que pueda ampliar mucho lo que han dicho otros. Claudia R. lo describe mejor nadie y no puedo añadir ni una coma a su comentario.
Sin duda si no lo conoces tienes que ir.

Man, if there was ever an inverse correlation between atmosphere and food, this is the place. Fortunately, it works in favor of the food.
The zapatilla is huge and good — like a rustic ham and cheese sandwich, grilled, with really good cheese.
I wouldn’t get the empanadas again, but they were fine.
Padron peppers — great. Maybe ask for them to not be as salty as the norm.
And the croquetas were really good. Probably the best of the trip.

Cuando pienso en Lavapiés, además de la multitud de restaurantes hindús, se me viene a la cabeza el Melo’s.
Conocido por muchos como «La Zapatilla» esta taberna de barrio se ha convertido en una institución por sus croquetas de bechamel gigantescas y cremosas y por su gran tosta/​sandwich de lacón y queso llamada zapatilla por el tamaño espectacular que tiene.
Suele estar hasta la bandera y tiene un pequeño salón al fondo para sentarse pero al que acceder puede ser muy muy MUY difícil, por lo que lo propio es estar en la barra.
Además, lo normal es que esté atendido por sólo dos personas que, por muy eficientes que sean, no dejan de ser dos para un local lleno hasta arriba.
De clara inspiración gallega, los pimientos de padrón regados de un buen vino gallego servido en las copas típicas son también un imprescindible cuando se frecuenta este mítico de Lavapiés.

Todo un clásico de Lavapiés. Aquí hay que venir tempranito para coger mesa y disfrutar de las raciones abundantes.
Hay que pedir zapatillas, no preguntéis qué es, solamente vais y lo pedís. Las croquetas están tremendas, las empanadas están tremendas y en general las pocas cosas que tienen están tremendas.
Para regar una comida tocha y espesa dejaros de historias, os pedís unas cuantas botellas de ribeiro y zumbando. Te vas a casa tan contento.

¿Qué decir del Melo s que no se haya dicho ya? Pues poco, las zapatillas y las croquetas, están increibles. Y bastante económicas. Las empanadillas, me recuerdan a unas que tomaba de crío, así que poco más que decir. Los pimientos de Padron… que pimientos!!!
Lo malo, que cierra los domingos y que la gente lo llena cuando yo quiero ir. Pero bueno.

One of the best local Tapas bar in Madrid. This spot was recommended to me by a native of Madrid while I rented out his lovely loft apartment through Air B&B. Great Site!
Really convenient as it is close to the «Lavapies» train station.
Recommendation: Get the Zapatillas & Croquetas. They are the best thing on the menus in my opinion. Spaniards do not believe in «doggy bags» so get the half-​order of Zapatilla or bring another stomach.
I’d suggest you go early if you want a table or spot at the bar. (Early is 10pm as Spaniards usually have dinner around 11pm) People are always coming and going in this hot spot so if you are social, you’ll love making conversation with the locals who frequent the place. Plus everyone is very friendly so if you have questions or want suggestions just ask someone! (They’re open late too, but the patrons keep coming).
Crowded, but highly recommended for the good food! The bar is so unassuming but has great character with even bigger taste.

This place is crackin (this means that it gets very busy)!
The food is all great and reasonably priced. We enjoyed the fried Pimientos (we ordered a Coke because they were spicy), empanadas, zapatillas, and croquetas.
I’d suggest you go very early if you want a table or spot at the bar. Otherwise you’ll be elbow to elbow with everyone around you at prime time (they’re open late too, but the patrons keep coming).

Esto lo voy a contar rápidamente: estuve en el Melo’s hace ya muchos años, antes de vivir en el barrio, y la verdad es que no tenía un recuerdo especial de él. Anoche, decidido a reencontrarme con él y toda la leyenda que lo rodea, fui con un par de amigos a cenar siendo ya un poco tarde, a ver si con eso podíamos estar sin tener que apretarnos con otras personas.
Esto último sí lo conseguimos, pero el resto de cosas prometidas… A ver, la zapatilla me parece bien, son 5 plantas de lacón y queso de tetilla calientes entre un par de trozos de pan deliciosos; sin embargo, las croquetas, siendo su segundo plato estrella en opinión de mucha gente, no me parecieron gran cosa. Es más, estando tan líquidas por dentro, lo más fácil es que la mayor parte del contenido acabe en el suelo, y no siendo precisamente baratas, pues menuda puñeta.
Por otro lado (y esto no es cuestión del local per se), coincidimos en una noche en la que el público era particularmente ruidoso (hasta el nivel del grito) y temo que eso terminó por echarnos. Una pena, creo que tendré que volver para enderezar mi opinión sobre el sitio porque, a pesar de que la zapatilla me gustó, la masificación no resultó especialmente de mi agrado.

This spot was recommended to me by a native of Madrid and it delivered small time local character with big taste. Consensus of multiple conversations has the Zappathia being the most buzz-​worthy order here. I can confirm. It’s the item you want to go with if this is your first visit. Since you are unable to take leftovers to go, the half-​order is suggested.
