If you’re a tourist, get there early or beware they’ll try to push the roast chicken rather than the Singapore Hainanese chicken rice. I got there at 8:30 pm, and the outfit I was wearing that particular day made me look like a tourist.(Had gone for a long walk, so was wearing a backpack and was dressed down. Most Singaporean women dress up.) I asked for the Hainanese chicken rice and they said only roast chicken was left. So I got up and checked the 5 other chicken stalls that are within walking distance. They were sold out or closed, and so I went back to Zheng Swee Kee ready to order roast chicken rice. And the same waitress now said that they had Hainanese chicken rice.(The chickens are all prepared in the morning and just cut up when someone orders it. This means they had it all along, they just didn’t want to give it to me.) Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they had my order. But I saw a couple of tourists(I’ll assume based on their ethnicity), and they were eating roast chicken. It makes me sad that if you’re a tourist that’s flown all this way to Singapore, and you’re going to try the classic chicken rice, they’re going to push the roast chicken at you to get rid of their inventory. So if you’re a tourist — get their early(7 pm?) and be ready to walk out the door if they don’t have what you want. There’s plenty of chicken rice stalls in the area.

Old school Singapore Hainanese chicken rice in a coffee shop. Simple and great food. We after chicken rice and had tried Yet Con but it was closed over the Chinese Year week, ended up at Swee Kee since it was open. Your loss Yet Con. They have 2 styles of chicken: Fried or steamed(the more traditional Hainanese style) and have portions for 2 or more to share. We ordered the steamed chicken for 2 along with the chicken rice and stir fried green beans. Chicken was moist with a good chickeny flavor. Make it better by downing it with the chilli and ginger dipping sauces. Stir fried green beans were fresh, crunchy and had a nice garlicky taste with the bits of ground pork for more flavor.

It’s chicken rice in the street of chicken rice! I wish I knew the story behind the two Swee Kees on Seah St. It’s serviceable chicken rice(white is supposed to be Kampong chicken), with standard Hainanese zi char items. Is it wrong for me to say that I like coming in the morning for their fried noodle breakfast? I prefer chicken rice from elsewhere, but this place is convenient, and the iced coffee from the drinks stall is good.

Opposite Raffles Hotel is this simple chicken rice place. It has a very simple old-school setting and while there are a good number of patrons, it’s never crowded /I never have to queue. I’m quite a fan of it — the chicken is flavourful and the rice is fragrant and fluffy. I usually order the 2 person set meal which includes kailan in oyster sauce, the chicken(of course) and fried tofu(which is also very nice!), plus a teh-o-peng, it comes up to about $ 10 per person. I think it’s cheaper than Boon Tong Kee, and of the same quality and standard of Boon Tong Kee /that chicken rice store on the 5th floor of Far East Plaza. The standard of the fried tofu is actually better than that of Boon Tong Kee!
