The Long Bar

I brought some friends over to try the Singapore Sling where it was created and it is indeed the best I have tasted. It’s also the most expensive at $ 31. I think I was the only Singaporean there when I visited.
The ambience is perfect for tourists, bringing to mind old style colonial Singapore. Peanuts are free flow and it’s one of the rare places where you can flick the peanut shells on the floor without repercussions. There’s a live band that plays at night on the upper floor.
There may be a queue in the early evenings on weekends so be prepared. No reservations are accepted.

Please leave this off you’re to do list while in Singapore. There is no magic to a Singapore sling, unless you want to buy two, just so you can get the 60 dollar glass. It’s a cluster f@@k of tourists. Better to enjoy the local places just outside the hotel, the people here are awesome– go say hello –and get to know them.

Atmosphere is cool — feels like an old, historic pub. Prices — not cool. 10% service charge and 7% tax on top of a $ 39 burger or $ 28 Singapore sling. And, as others have said, you’re hanging with old tourists. Service was a little slow but very nice.

two stars for the ‘meh’ experience, but… it’s such an icon, that it gets a gift of one star. It’s definitely one of those must-​do things on a first visit to SG, but have one Singapore Sling (original recipe, duh) drink in the history, and get out. there will be buckets of peanuts on the table, feel free to throw the shells on the floor, it’s expected.

The Long Bar is famous for creating the Singapore Sling. I have tried the Singapore sling in other places such as Singapore Airlines, but I gotta say nowhere does it as good as the Long Bar.
Its not cheap, I think it was $ 32 buts they do a really good job. There are also other variations such as the summer sling, winter sling etc.
For such a steep price, you also get to eat peanuts and you can throw the shells on the ground. The Long Room feels like an old British bar which is pretty cool.

I went to The Long Bar in Singapore on 4÷5÷2013. It is located in the historic Raffles Hotel. It was my 1^st time there. I went there to have a Singapore Sling (doesn’t everybody). I’m not going to complain about the price — after all I came halfway across the world to have it. I was not disappointed. This is where the Singapore Sling was invented. Plus, I took photos.

Like other Unilocalers, I felt very compelled to come and have a Singapore Sling at the home of the drink at the hotel! It was very, very crowded but we were able to snag a couch area in the middle of the bar where we happily sank into comfy couches to relax our feet and indulge in a classic drink. The bar looks like it could be from an older movie set and with the peanut shells everywhere it does have a certain appeal and air of an older time.
Yes it’s expensive but the reality is that all of the cocktail bars we went to in Singapore were expensive, so, it’s probably on average about $ 5-​$ 10 more than the other cocktails I had on my trip. I got the classic SIngapore Sling which was fruity, topped off with a generous pineapple chunk and frothy from shaking. It wasn’t very strong, sadly, but maybe it’s one of those drinks that sneaks up on you over time.
I’d say come here once for a drink and the novelty if you’re in the area! Enjoy the atmosphere, eat a lot of peanuts and leisurely sip your drink.

So I’m told that one must visit the Long Bar for a Singapore Sling when in Singapore. As an obedient tourist following the crowds, I joined my fellow travelers and sipped on a deliciously overpriced drink ($ 20+USD) while munching on bland peanuts. It was fun to visit and learn about this famous drink, but otherwise nothing that would make me want to return.

Hmm. How to describe this place? Cruise ship bar. Dave and busters. Retirement home for old western folk. More tacky than charming. I suppose for some people they like the feeling of dropping stuff on the ground. Drinks are just ok. The drink list is quite small and you can’t even order all of the drinks (my fourth choice is what I went with). I’m only here because an out of town guest was curious.

Tacky over priced expensive drinks. Theyre riding the Singapore sling drink to death. $ 36 for a cocktail in a cheesy tiki ish bar, tried it because it was famous but it was pretty lame, don’t say you haven’t been warned.

One of the most touristy things to do in Singapore is go to the Long Bar in the historic Raffles Hotel and have a Singapore Sling. I had slight reservations about forking over $ 30 for a cocktail, but it sounded like something we needed to do on our first and most likely last trip to Singapore.
As we sat at the bar, we learned that this year the Singapore Sling turns 100! The famous cocktail was created in 1915 by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon. The story goes that at the time women were prohibited to drink alcohol. Boon got around this by creating a cocktail that resembled fruit juice which made it acceptable to drink.
There are many varieties of the Singapore Sling. Being light weights we chose one that was champagne based. We enjoyed eating the free peanuts and tossing some of the shells on the floor. FYI, this is the only place in Singapore where «littering» is permitted. :D
We had a great time here and having a Singapore Sling was one of the most fun memories of the trip.

I’ve been to the Long Bar twice. When we have people that visit Singapore for the first time, we make sure to take them here to have a Singapore Sling. It is fun to walk around the grounds of the Raffles hotel and wander into the Long Bar. It is usually pretty packed, but seats open up frequently because most people stop in for 1 – 2 drinks. The Singapore Slings are pricey, but the bar has fun people watching. Service is hit or miss because they get so busy. It is worth it to check this place out at least once.

Yes, I did have an original Singapore Sling! Could you really fault me for that though?
The bar was beautiful and dressed in, how shall I say, relaxed tropical luxury? Very well then — it was relaxed tropical luxury, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Lots of white paint and clean well-​scrubbed furnishings, beautiful people and weather. But oddly, a lot of crows hanging around, who couldn’t be rid of.
Oh, and a great tropical drink too.

Father in law us in town so I took him to Raffles for the obligatory Singapore Sling. The first thing I noticed upon entering is the overwhelming stink coming through the own doors. The bar smells as if it hasn’t been cleaned in weeks.
The drink was good, the price exorbitant, but I knew what to expect from past experiences

So its a bit of a tourist trap but how many people will come to Singapore without doing drinks at Raffles?
Singapore isn’t cheap for booze to start with and of course you are paying $sing 27 for a sling so that bar bill can rack up quickly.
It is however the experience you go for, its Raffles and wandering through the hotel grounds enroute to the Long Bar is nice.
Service is patchy in the bar — been 3 times now so sometimes good, other times waiting ages to get served. You also get the sack of peanuts and of course you should be dumping the shells on the floor.
Cute colonial décor, great ceiling fans and some nights there is live music and the bands playing are great.
Food was ok — had a decent burger post flight last time and it was great but then had one before and it was a bit dry.
So ok for me, needs to be more consistent, but the tourists will still go anyway cause it is Raffles.

This is supposed to be the home of the original Singapore sling, and they have designed the bar to feel as such; but it says right on the menu that it was remodeled and relocated in 1991. This is truly built as a tourist trap, playing on their history. In an effort to bring in more suckers they have even recreated the bar twice on two levels, giving everyone that wonderful «authentic» feel.
I suppose the peanuts concept is supposed to be how British officers relaxed decades ago; or, perhaps they are provided in all their salty glory, to make you thirstier and drink more and as an appetizer to order more food. But, don’t worry, if you get thirsty from those peanuts, they will happily sell you overpriced still or sparkling bottled water. They will not serve you tap water, they will not take a glass and open the tap to quench your thirst. The ice filled cocktails are most certainly not made with bottled water as Singapore has some of the cleanest tap water in the world.
The iconic Singapore Sling has been partnered with 4 – 5 alternate slings to cater to most tastes and the drinks are good, overly sweet, but what one would expect. It is most likely mass produced in a jug and just poured over ice, but this is not an artisanal bar. And honestly S$ 27 per drink is about right, even reasonable for a drink in Singapore, especially at a «Popular» bar.
The refusal to serve tap water angered me, the straw to break the camels back was the scam artist style promotions. They advertise on some menus, seriously not all had this, that every second order of a Singapore sling will get you a complimentary Singapore Sling Shaker. They also advertise that any food orders will get you a complimentary shaker as well. First, when we ordered a dessert a shaker should have been brought out, no ifs ands or buts. But instead when we were later presented with our bill and then our credit cards to sign we had to ask for the shaker. The food based shaker was willingly offered, the two sling based shaker was not offered. They interpret every second order to be per person, over two rounds; the words per person or rounds are not listed anywhere. The waiter was kind enough to relent and give us the $ 0.50 valued plastic shakers after much argument, but the irritant is as I stated «Scam artist operations» banking on people to forget their shakers and vaguely wording their menu, all to encourage upsells.
I will likely be back, under protest, with the next family in town; but my advice is to avoid the peanuts, hydrate before you enter and bring your lawyer if any promotions catch your eye!

You come here for the Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel. Honestly, I think it is a tourist trap because you pay an arm and a leg for a drink you could easily get anywhere else, but you need to get the Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel.
I believe it came out to about $ 20 US dollars for one glass (souvenir glass NOT even included). But if you’re a sucker like me and need to do the tourist thing, then you have to try the Singapore Sling at the Raffles Hotel at least once.

This review is for the long bar only. The colonial style white as snow Raffles hotel is certainly a sight you must see, wander around the lush gardens, but save yourself the $ 28 for a silly cocktail that none of the locals drink. I followed Anthony Bourdain’s advice and skipped the Singapore Sling. The bar tender was nice enough not to pressure me and made me a fresh lime juice for $ 14. Yes, you are reading this correctly, it is not a typo.
The bar with it’s slow moving ceiling fans and dark wood could set you back in time, if it weren’t for obnoxious groups of tourists in sweaty tank tops that got dropped off in bus loads. Top it off with whiny rugrats for total buzz kill.

Long Bar is a place that you visit just because.
Well, because there is so much history attached to it. It’s where the Singapore Sling was originally created. Yes, that’s right. The Singapore Sling cocktail IS actually created in Singapore. Unlike the ubiquitous so-​called «Singapore Fried Noodles/​Rice» found in Americanized Chinese restaurants in the US that have no roots whatsoever in Singapore.
Long Bar is located on the 2^nd flr of the Raffles Hotel. This historic colonial hotel is beautiful especially in the evening, with its façade lit up.
The most visible character of Long Bar is the concept of in-​shell peanuts served to guests. You crack open the shell, pop the peanut into your mouth, and throw the shells on the ground. There is also a live Filipino band that performs though the night we were there, it was more of a golden oldie type of band rather than a band who plays their rendition of current hits. I’m not sure if this the usual since I’ve only been once. Most guests are non-​locals and I can understand why. Long Bar feels a little lackluster for those looking for a trendy place. For those with a colonial nostalgia, Long Bar is where you can spend a couple hours at in the evening. The Singapore Sling cocktail is S$ 27. That’s a bit steep but hey, it’s the Long Bar. Not gonna lie, I prefer an Old Fashioned cocktail anytime.

The long bar has my thumbs up for character and originality. U can eat peanuts And throw the shells on the floor, u can dance crazily to live bands and nobody cares!
It’s an iconic destination in singapore with so much history and of course the original cocktail — the ‘singapore sling’.
Unlike many other bars in Singapore, the sling here is made with real juice and bits and bobs… Rather than pre mixed mixers.
It’s refreshing and is well worth the $ 27 sing dollar plus taxes.
Very touristy and a must visit when you’re in singas. No reservations required.

der Stadt. Ich habe beim Raffles vorher immer an einen palastgleichen
Bau gedacht, der die Vorrechte der königlichen Briten auf die ganze Welt
betont. Doch beides stimmt nicht, das Raffles ist ein eher normaler
Hotelbau des 19. Jahrhunderts und das einstige Empire der Briten erkennt man nur noch an den Nationen, die Cricket spielen.
Im ersten Stock befindet sich die Long
Bar und die ist so kolonial distinguiert, dass man sich kaum wundern
würde, wenn gleich Rudyard Kipling mit Mogli im Schlepptau einträte. An
der Decke findet man den tropischen Ventilator, in Reihe geschaltete
Fächer, die die warme Luft etwas mischen sollen. Ganz unsingapurianisch
ist der Boden mit Erdnussschalen überfüllt, ansonsten in dieser klinisch
sauberen Stadt undenkbar. Ein Singapore Sling muss es denn sein, seines
Zeichens 26, S$ teuer (etwa 18, EUR, aber eben klassisch) und leider
nach meinem Geschmack etwas zu sehr mit Eiswürfeln gefüllt. Das macht
den Geschmack wässrig und die Rendite der Bar besser, sei es drum. Dazu
schnappe ich einen kleinen Salat mit Spargel und Limettendressing, der
in Größe unerheblich, im Preis jedoch bedeutsam war. Am Ende war es
teuer, aber einfach unvergesslich; been there done that.

Ja, es ist die super Touri-​Falle schlecht hin! Aber, you get what you expect: ein Singapore Sling (S$ 28!!) am Ort seiner Entstehung. Die Bar ist im wunderschönen Raffles Hotel und ist so kolonial eingerichtet wie es nur sein kann. Man sollte sich auf jeden Fall auch die Zeit nehmen das Hotel zu erkunden! Absolut spitze!

Das Raffles fällt auf. Zwischen all den modernen Wolkenkratzern versteckt sich ein niedriges Gebäude im Kolonialstil. Hübsch ist es. Nobel ist es. Teuer ist es. Deshalb haben wir dort auch nicht übernachtet.
Das Hotel steht in jedem Reiseführer, nicht zuletzt wegen des berühmten Cocktails Singapore Sling. Der ist wohl hier erfunden worden und natürlich will jeder Tourist genau hier einen solchen trinken. Wollten wir auch.
Wir wussten nicht wirklich wohin und schauten uns erstmal das Gebäude an. Schick und ein toller Garten! Hier ein Brunnen, da ein tolle Terrasse mit Sesseln, dort ein kleiner Shop mit Nettigkeiten, da eine hübsche Bar unter Palmen. Hm Wir irrten weiter, man fühlte sich ein bisschen wie ein Eindringling Kein Mensch zu sehen, alles ziemlich düster Aha, Schilder weisten nun endlich den Weg zur Long Bar.
Treppen hoch, eine Werbeschild für den Singapore Sling wir mussten also richtig sein. Ein Blick hinein verriet eine nette Atmosphäre, jedoch war an diesem Montagabend nicht viel los. Wie in den Reiseführern beschrieben, lagen hier und da auch Erdnussschalen auf dem Boden — unfassbar für Singapur! ;-)
Allerdings hielt uns die Preistafel am Eingang dann doch davon ab, hier den berühmten Cocktail zu bestellen: 18 Euro??? Ähm Nein, danke! Der schmeckt woanders bestimmt auch…

Hier geht man eigentlich nur hin, weil in jedem Reiseführer steht, dass das ein muss ist. Hier wäre die Geburtsstätte des Singapore-​Slings und nur hier bekommt man ihn in Original gähn
Bei unserem zweiten Besuch in Singapur sind wir dann auch mal zu dieser Touristen-​Atraktion. Mehr ist es nämlich nicht mehr. In die Long-​Bar kommt man rein, egal wie man gekleidet ist (in irgendeinem Reiseführer stand nämlich was vonmit kurzen Hosen käme man nicht rein.). Es ist eine Bar, erstmal nichts spektakuläres. Im gegensatz zu dem sonst sehr sauberen Singapur kann man hier Erdnüsse essen und die Schalen auf den Boden werfen, das hat echt einen gewissen Spaßfaktor muss ich sagen. Die Erdnüsse stehen auf den Tischen zum Verzehr und kosten nichts extra. Der Singapore Sling kostetfesthalten30 Sing. Dollar pro Cocktail! Der Geschmack war ok, hab schon bessere getrunken. Nachdem wir 60 SingaporeDollar für 2 Cocktails ausgegeben haben, sind wir auch gegangen. Das wars. Wieder eine Touristen-​Atraktion, die man auf seiner Liste abhaken kann. Hmm.
Ganz ehrlich? Wir können es nicht empfehlen und würden auch nicht mehr hingehen. Lieber eine andere schöné Bar suchen ohne berühmten Namen und einfach dort einen Singapore-​Sling trinken und den Abend genießen.

Ein Singapur Sling in der LongBar trinken ist ein muß. Super Ambiente aber gepfefferte Preise, aber wie gesagtwer in Singapur unterwegs ist muss in der LongBar einen Stop einlegen.

die Long Bar ist leider nicht mehr das was sie mal war. Das liegt aber einzig und alleine darand, dass das alte Raffles weggeschoben wurde und neu aufgebaut wurde. Der Flair, die Stimmung und der alte Platz sind dabei unwiederbringlich verloren gegangen. Dafuer sind aber der Sling, die Erdnuessen … so wie frueher. Leider iste der Palmcourt nur noch fuer Hotelgaeste zugaenglich.

Diese Bar gehört wohl zum obligatorischen Singapur-​Touri-​Besuch. Das Ambiente und der Service und leider auch die Getränke kommen aber über ein: Es war nett, nicht hinnaus. Schade

Die Long Bar im Raffles Hotel wird immer unterschiedlich gewertet werden — es sind halt die Augen und die Erwartungshaltung für diesen historischen Platz, die letztendlich zum Urteil führen.
Ich bin im Rahmen meiner vielen Reisen in die Region des öfteren dort gewesen. Auch wenn die Bar historisch zu nennen ist, ist sie es genau genommen nicht, denn nahezu alles am Raffles Hotel ist neu, renoviert, restauriert. Und trotzdem weht hier der Hauch der Kolonialzeit!
Mir ist es dort immer zu laut, irgendwie können die — für mich — die Musik nicht richtig regeln. Gesprächsführung ist nahezu unmöglich, umso mehr ist Körpersprache gefordert. Den Sling habe ich hier noch nie getrunken, anderswo allerdings auch kaum — er schmeckt mir eigentlich nirgends! Ein Bier vom Fass zu den obligaten Erdnüssen passt schlichtweg besser. Es sind — glaube ich — auch ausnahmslos die Touristen, die zum ersten Mal in Sinagapore sind, die den Sling bestellen.
Voll ist es jeden Abend der Woche. Das führt dazu, dass man häufig zunächst an der Bar stehen muss, bevor man einen Sitzplatz ergattern kann. Andererseits hat man vom Bartresen den besten Überblick auf die tägliche Inzenierung, die hier vonstatten geht.
Der Weg zum Klo ist übrigens weit, etwas lästig, wenn das Bier drückt.
Im Anschluss an den Barbesuch lohnt ein Bummel durch das Raffles Hotel und seine Anlagen. In viele Bereiche kann man als Besucher ungehindert gehen.
Fazit: Ein netter, wenn auch nicht spektaulärer, nostalgischer Platz für einen Absacker in netter Runde. Da zentral gelegen, auch meist nicht weit weg zu den vielen Hotels, die in fußläufiger Entfernung liegen.

Hier sind die besten Zeiten definitiv vorbei und die Long-​Bar lebt nur noch von ihrem Ruf. Der Singapore-​Sling schmeckte wie ein besserer Sirup und die Bedienung war recht gelangweilt. Im Vergleich zu unserem letzten Besuch von vor 3 Jahren ein himmelweiter Unterschied.
Wer einmal einen Singapore Sling in der Post-​Bar des Fairmont-​Hotels genossen hat, weiss wovon ich rede.

Der Singapore Sling ist selbstverständlich auch mit Singapur verwurzelt und man muss, wenn man einmal Singapur besucht, diesen Cocktail genau dort trinken!
Er ist jetzt nichts besonderesauch die Bar ist nichts besonderesaber irgendwie dann doch!
Der Flair der kolonialstil Bar ist schon sehr beeindruckend. Vor allem die Bambusfächer die von der Decke den vielen Touristen die ihren Cocktail schlürfen ein wenig Luft zufächert.
Und auch ganz wichtig: Die Schalen der Erdnüsse müssen auf den Boden geworfen werdenSonst outet man sich letztendlich noch als Tourist :-)

Irgendwann, so heißt es, trifft man in der Raffles Long Bar jeden westlichen Reisenden in Südostasien. Der Platz ist eine Legende. Die Einrichtung auf zwei Etagen ist im Kolonialstil erhalten geblieben, nur die mechanischen Palmfächer an der Decke werden mittlerweile von einer Klimaanlage unterstützt. Die Bedienung ist stilgerecht gekleidet, was einem ein zunächst eher unangenehm herrisches Gefühl gibt. Verschämt legen die Besucher anfangs die Erdnussschalen auf den Tisch — doch spätestens wenn der Kellner sie selber von dort mit einer raschen Handbewegung auf den Boden fegt, der Sling serviert ist und die Liveband zu spielen beginnt, entsteht eine gelassene Zufriedenheit. The only place in Singapore, where littering is allowed wirbt die Long Bar mit ironischem Unterton, denn seinen Müll auf die Straße zu werfen wird in der Stadt mit einem Bußgeld geahndet.
