Lunch hour is always crowded. But food is always affordable. I think I have tried every variety here and all of them were good. Not super-good, but good. The quantity of every meal is always of the right amount. Workers work like elves here. But the whichever staff working at the cashier always tend to look cranky.

One of the better options in SGH! A very popular spot for people working in the hospital, between 10 – 12 you can see lots of teams of doctors coming here for a quick drink. My breakfast favourites: milo dino, otah toast, kaya toast, half-boiled eggs. The milo dino comes with a generous topping of milo powder(if not, you can always ask for more — they usually readily comply) and is really quite worth it for $ 1.90(considering that it usually goes for $ 3 and upwards at other places). The otah here is flavorful and complements the nice, freshly-toasted soft buns very well. Same for the kaya in the toast — bread is usually quite crisp, though the Bengawan Solo at block 7 does a better version(but also takes much longer). Half boiled eggs are done just right, if you want it harder, simply let the service staff know and they’ll pass you the eggs in hot water in a metal cup. Service here is really fast and efficient so don’t be put off by the long queues! The uncle at the cashier is really quite entertaining with his daily chants as he repeats your orders(you’ll have to see him in action to know what I mean).

I created this review just so that I can warn the general public. Despite being located at a hospital, I found Kaffe & Toast to be unhygienic. I found a curly strand of nose hair at the bottom of my cup of milk tea. Curly hair with a black follicle bulb like that can come from only armpit, pubic or nose. Frankly nose hair is the least disgusting one that I can think of. The staff just smiled and waved me off. They have no training on how to deal with mistakes like this. I feel so disgusted.

This place is good if you are ravenously hungry. It’s cheap, and the portions for take away meals are enormous. While the curry chicken is good, some of the other dishes don’t have the best flavor in my opinion, but they’re alright. I recommend the peanut butter and honey toast for an afternoon snack. Show your Singapore General Hospital or Duke-NUS Medical School staff ID for a discount. Also, don’t be put off by the long-line – it moves quickly, although they could stand to benefit by having a second cash register.

Kaffe & Toast gets incredibly crowded during the busy lunch hour at SGH. The queue snakes outside, and it’s common to see nurses, doctors and patients ordering food to go as the place simply does not have enough seating room. The go to picks are chicken curry and laksa — heady, fragrant and lemak. The chicken rendang is to rave about too, with the gravy generously drizzled over hot steamed rice. This is a good alternative to boring old Kopitiam or the more expensive O’Briens though to get a seat, you’ll have to go at a fairly odd hour.
