Chew Kee is undoubtedly my favourite place for soy braised chicken!!! I practically grew up with it. Back in the older days when I was little, I recalled the shophouse being packed to the brim on Sun though it wasn’t exactly in the most hygienic conditions. Though it expanded to the next unit, somehow the atmosphere is never the same. Fortunately, the taste of the chicken never fails to inevitably evoke that sense of nostalgia. Probably at least once a month or more often, I’ll swing by after church service to order 1 whole chicken for takeaway so that the family can indulge in it at our own pace. It is an unusually ‘quiet’ lunch as everyone is just getting on with the chicken and savouring every bite. I’m glad both the girls love it as much as I do! JJ is never really into chicken skin but for Chew Kee, she will never let go of any tiny pieces!!! MM is all about the skin too… she’s said it’s soooo smooth and yummy! Had to have a tiny piece with what little rice she had left!!! Too funny!!!

I know not how I grew up unaware of the deliciousity that is Chew Kee. But fear not, it’s always a case of better late than never with these sorts of things. Chew Kee’s a lovely old timey joint alongside one of the major arteries of Chinatown, and if you’re seated at the main shop itself, choose to take a table outside where it’s cooler. You’ll be asked«rice or noodles», and my preference is the springy yellow noodles with nice bite. The star of the show is undoubtedly the braised chicken — moist, plump, and generous portion. You know how at most food joints, where you have to portion your meat and vegetables accordingly to your carbs? Well, not this place, given the generosity of the aunties who capably ply the storefront. I like to accompany the dish with pickled green chili, though there are those who swear by the chili concoction in a sqeezy bottle on all tables. Either way, still yummy. Wash everything down with a cup of ice cold lime juice, and ahh. your life satisfaction index increases about 10 notches.

A joint that everyone who works around China Town would know and frequent, the Soya Sauce Chicken at Chew Kee is long known for its flavour and tender chickens. Well marinated and braised, the consistency in the taste and standard has been the same for the past 4 years I’ve been patronising them. The horfun is also well cooked making the texture slightly qq and firm. Personally, I feel that horfun dips their wonderful soya sauce better than the yellow noodles and horfun helps the flavour of the sauce stand out more.
