Maybe it is blasphemy in the land of many chicken rice lovers, but I am not a fan of it. I can take it or leave it. I have never crave for it or dream about it. To me, chicken rice is like fast food. It is something which is easy to order as take-away. No soup, no mess. Just sliced chicken over a mound of rice and maybe some cucumber slices with a small packet of chili sauce. My colleague who lives in Yishun told me there is nothing much in Yishun and recommended two food stalls to try when he found out I will be heading this way. This is one of them. It does seem strange to refer to Yishun as if it is in a far away place when it is probably about a 30 minutes drive away(but if you take public transportation of bus/train, it can get to 1 – 2 hours, depending on where you come from). I found this place, which is actually very near the bus terminal. It occupies a corner stall in the coffee shop and is very well managed. There is a queue system. Order at the cash register, get your receipt on which your queue number is printed. Wait for your queue number to be called. Collect your food when called. It has many recommendations on its signboard by various TV shows. Now I am a bit skeptical about such claims after the Tiong Bahru market experience. But this place does serve pretty good chicken rice. I ordered the $ 3.50 portion to go. Since it is Hainanese chicken rice, only«white» chicken is available, no roasted version. The packet of chicken rice was very hot, piping hot. It was the first time or since a very long time I had such a packet where the food was actually hot. It was still warm when I got to it like 3 – 4 hours later. The chicken was not silky smooth or succulent as I would like, I put it down as maybe I left it for too long, but it was not totally dried out or tough. It was still soft but with more bite to the meat. The rice was amazing. Oh my goodness, they drizzled sauce over the chicken and rice and after the 3 – 4 hours, the rice just soaked up the flavor. I could literally just eat the chicken rice as is, without the chili or dark soya sauce at all. It was that delicious. It also came with a few slices of pickled cucumbers or something, adding a bit of crunch to it. I would order this again when I am in the Yishun area.

I’m surprised there hasn’t been a review for this place yet. Isn’t this supposed to be one of several popular chicken rice spots in Singapore(the amount of chicken spines hanging there is pretty freaky; perfect horror movie scene for fowls)? I was introduced to this spot by family ages ago while I was but a pup and re-introduced by a close friend when I first got back to Singapore. It was instant reunification like long lost friends that led me to visit at least once a week to get my chicken rice fix in the northern part of Singapore. But what makes this particular stall stand out among the endless chicken rice stalls available in Singapore? The chicken; definitely the chicken — sauced right, cooked right, tender… and not-so-oily. Since I usually order extra chicken or the half chicken, it always comes out on a plate that looks like chicken resting within a swimming pool of sauces. Oh, they even garnish it with a slice of tomato(lol), peeled cucumbers(as usual), and *pickled* cucumbers. Yet, it is only taste that really matters and that is something they definitely succeeded in. As for the rest? The rice, chili, and soup… are just slightly better than the typical chicken rice stall. Nothing spectacular… like the usual composition of a star’s entourage. /recommended-ONLY-if-you’re-in-the-area Unilocal 100: 38⁄100
