Overpriced and not very nice food. We visited this place for lunch, I have to admit the place looked ok from outside. However the food did not match our expectations. The roast meat was very dry, the Yorkshire puddings were dry and tasteless, and the veg appeared to be the worst frozen veg that had been heated up.

Well it looks good but whilst the food was fine i felt it a little expensive and the service poor.

I used to love visiting Russells while in York. However, on visiting for a special birthday, on a trip from Newcastle, I was surprised to find that Russells isn’t the same as it used to be. The vegetables were not kept topped up, some of the dishes were empty for long periods of time, and some were no longer available. I asked for a childs’ meal because I cannot eat very much, and was allowed that, but was charged the full price when paying for the meal. I had to query the bill in front of other customers, which I found unacceptable. The attitude of the manager was not good either when I queried my bill. I am disabled and did not appreciate discussing payment in front of the other diners. Soft drinks are really overpriced, my daughter had two glasses of milk — charged at £1.75 each! I wrote to express my upset at the visit and did not receive a reply. Russells has went right down in my estimation. I used to really look forward to a lovely roast dinner, but will now have to seek one elsewhere as Russells have lost a loyal customer.

Russells is one of the places we go if we’re feeling very flush and fancy a treat. The choice of food is your standard carvery fare, but it is very good quality. Other options are available if you don’t want a choice of perfectly cooked meat with the trimmings. The wine list is more than adequate although the staff are not particularly knowledgeable. The desserts on offer are generally your favourite quintessentially British puddings and again very nice. Unless you’re a pensioner and going extra early, try to be seated for dinner between 5 and 7 to make the most of early bird specials, otherwise, be prepared to pay as it’s not the cheapest place in York to eat.
