Excellent place and awesome staff! This was is our first time in Japan, but as a food lovers we were looking for something special and Japanese. However, the language sometimes is a barrier! However this place is very English friendly! We went for lunch and had the beef cutlet accompanied with a good sake that the owner recommended us. The beef itself was very good, tender, juicy and perfectly cooked. However, I prefer it without that much sauce because can overpower the flavors of the beef, but that is a personal option. The service was very professional and welcoming! I will Totally recommend this place if interested in a good quality beef and an outstanding service!

We stumbled upon this place by accident and were immediately impressed by the friendliness of the staff as well as their excellent language skills. Stunning meal, fantastic beef and great sake! This really made our last night in Kyoto perfect!

I would recommend this restaurant to both tourists and my Japanese friends. I really liked that this restaurant was trying to highlight beef from other parts of Japan besides Kobe. While Kobe beef is indeed delicious, it is overpriced and catered towards the tourist market. My boyfriend and I got the chance to speak to the manager and he was proud to explain everything from where he sourced the meat from, how the cows were raised, and how to properly serve each cut. As for the food, it was beautifully displayed and, despite the fact that it was obviously a meat-heavy meal, very well balanced with Japanese pickles, miso soup, and a delicious salad on the side. The miso soup was so good — great quality miso with small Japanese mushrooms that become gelatinous when cooked. My boyfriend and I ordered different sets, and the meat was tender and flavorful regardless of how it was prepared. There was a great hot sauce made out of yuzu and chilis. It was a creative combination but a little too astringent. There was also a small cup of grated daikon and yuzu soup. Again, an awesome combination of ingredients, but a little too salty. We were excited by the bamboo steamer filled seasoned rice, slices of beef, and a generous portion of scallions. It was fun and satisfying to eat, but generally a little sweeter than we expected. However, we’ve found that Japanese food tends to err towards a subtle sweetness as opposed to the very savory Taiwanese or American cuisine that we are used to. There is a great ambiance in the restaurant. There are traditional Japanese elements, but it is modern and relaxed. Unlike many restaurants we’ve found in Japan, it is perfect for both an intimate dinner or for a group of friends. Thanks for everything, Hiroto!

You are in Kyoto and you still want to have Kobe beef? Nonsense !! Why don’t you try Kyoto Gyu(京都牛) while you are in Kyoto? Shishikin is a place you can find Kyoto local beef in central Kyoto. It is only 5min away from Shijo Kawaramachi station. I love location and atmosphere of the restaurant. This is a steak restaurant offer you one of the best ‘beef’ values for money in Kyoto, I guess. A big plus for you is Hiroto, a manager of Shishikin can speak fluent English and they have a Norwegian waiter who speak both Japanese and English. I’ve been there twice for lunch. This place is not inexpensive but it is definitely worth what you’re paid for. This place is a good for a volume lunch and luxurious dinner with a nice bottle of wine. It will be perfect for me if food taste less salty because I don’t drink Sake or Wine much, so it won’t be trouble if you are a wine lover.
