Great savory empanadas(particularly the Chilean). The fruit ones fall a little flat for me. Wish they were open later, but if you’ve been to the older locations in Downtown DC it’s the same thing.

It’s not very often that the proprietor of a food business in DC waits on you, but Julia herself served me yesterday. I was impressed that she washed her hands thoroughly before she took anyone’s order. That is leadership if I have ever seen it. I noticed immediately that Latinos were standing in line to purchase her goods – great sign. Let me state this: I am not an expert on empanadas. I might eat them once or twice a year. The ones I purchased to take home were very well done in terms of the quality of ingredients, size and freshness. There is a window counter space where you can eat on-site, should you prefer to do that. Gosh, for DC, the prices are actually fantastic. I did a double-take to make sure that I was reading them correctly – it’s $ 4.18 for one of the large empanadas(savory) and $ 2.50 for one of the fruit empanadas(dessert). Muy bueno, Julia.

I like empanadas, and I like the fact that DC has Julia’s Empanadas where you can get your fix. I’ve tried their Chilean Style Beef(contains ground beef, raisins, hard-boiled eggs, onions, and ripened olives), the Chorizo(has chorizo, rice, and black beans), the Spinach(contains spinach, mozzerella and ricotta cheeses), and their Jamaican Style(which has ground and chopped beef, onion, potato, curry, and spices). My favorite is the Jamaican Style as it is flavorful, a little salty, and had good flavors with the spices. While parking is a little tight, it’s a good little treat if you’re in the area. +Jamaican Style
