I go in. Pick up a tallboy. It’s a liquor store, just like any other. You know, with beer and snacks and other questionable forms of sustenance. Looks good to me. The old lady behind the counter is a fiesty, take-no-riff raff kind of lady and probably deals with a lot of the DB’s that have as of late infiltrated what was once a decent Venice neighborhood, so I make sure to be especially impeccable with my manners. Looks at my ID. Checks it three times. Yes, I look like someone’s scrappy underage kid sister, but I really am 24. She chuckles at me anyway, like in my face, but rings me up. I give her a twenty. She gives me seven dollars back so I call her on it while her employee is handling another customer. She reimburses me, and I ask her for a bag since I’m riding my bike. I don’t know if she felt rushed or was feeling the pressure of having another person waiting in line, but she snaps at me, fumbling with all kinds of bags, hissing and whatnot. She tells me she doesn’t know what she wants from me and makes this huge fuss, scaring everyone. I’m not looking for a pat on the back and I’m not a rocket scientist, but, meh, I don’t know… maybe correct change and a paper bag? I thought to give her 5 stars because she obviously gives zero shits and that’s cool, but then I was like, «Nah, you can’t count money and you yelled at me,» but then I was like, «YES! You make me miss my grandma!»
