We came here on this past Saturday and enjoyed the tasting they had going on. Only $ 3.00 per person and you got to try 5 different samples. The sangria they had was a nice mix of a few different varieties and it was excellent. We had a great time and we look forward to enjoying it again this summer when we are back in the area! I was at our local wine shop and they had some of their«detention» wine. Looking forward to sipping on it! However it will sit on my wine shelf for a bit before I crack it open! This is good enough to save for an enchanting evening!

Such a fun cool place to visit! I would recommend this winery to anyone wanting to check out wines on the Old Mission peninsula. The building is an old school house and is decorated in such a fun way. They have a lot of sweeter wines and I’m more of a dry wine fan, but their riesling was fantastic, I went back the next day to purchase a bottle. Also — if you’re there and they have their warm spiced wine available for tasting and they ask you if you want a sip, there should only be one answer: yes.

Being a tourist in the middle of winter in a winter wonderland can be «iffy», but my day started on a happy note when I happened upon the little schoolhouse. It was earlier than their open hours, but the proprietor was so gracious when he saw me drive into the parking lot, and let me in with a positive, laid back energy. Now to the wine… wonderful. I’m really not much of a drinker, and actually never know what to order, but I know what I like when I taste it and taste I did. Fun and relaxing.

My girlfriend and I visited four wineries on our trip up Old Mission Peninsula: Peninsula Cellars, Château Grand Traverse, Brys Estate and Two Lads. Peninsula Cellars was the most laid back. Château Grand Traverse had the best variety of wines. Brys Estate was our favorite tasting room and Two Lads had the best view. When we showed up to Peninsula Cellars in December, 2015, we only saw two other couples pop in during our visit. The employees were very friendly and helpful. They weren’t pushy. One of the wines was served hot, which I liked.(At Château Grand Traverse, they served me a room temperature wine that was supposed to be served hot.) Peninsula Cellars also offers a tasty non-alcoholic root beer. As you work your way up the peninsula, you’ll find fancier tasting rooms, but I liked how Peninsula Cellars wasn’t pretentious. It kinda felt more like a bar than a winery. We walked away with two bottles: The 2014 Chardonnay and the Hot Rod Cherry Wine. My girlfriend doesn’t normally like chardonnay, but we both agreed it was good. I didn’t really care for any of the reds here. Indeed, finding a good red in Michigan is hard.

First stop on our wine tour. The tasting room is made out of an old school house. Still has the chalkboards and everything! Wine is great and has some amazing views. Wines are cleverly named after some common school words such as detention and exchange student. Although detention was never fun the wine detention is opposite of the negative connotation.

This place is wonderful! It’s laid back but has a really cute theme. They have a ‘school house’ theme and some of the wine names reflect that. I had a great tasting and the gent that served me was lovely. Great experience! The late harvest Riesling is the best I’ve ever had– make sure you get more bottles than you planned!

Great wines and great hospitality and great atmosphere! Couldn’t ask for more! The wines were reasonably priced and first class. The surroundings were picturesque and they welcomed our tour. Would totally recommend. They had a house made root beer that has me dreaming of root beer floats!

You have to try the 2013 Chardonnay. Sweet and not too dry, very smooth. Mom got 6 bottles. The little crackers are also addicting snacks in between tastings!

We are not«trendy hipsters» but they made us feel comfortable coming in for a wine tasting. It was only $ 3 for 5 tastes! They had fruit wines, whites and some sweeter Reds and we even found one that we had to take home with us! They all have cute names based off school since it is in an old school house. We like«Homework» best! I would really recommend stoping by this place if you like the sweeter wines.

They have a great wine list with lots of choices for any persons likes. The only issue is that the guy pouring the wine did not describe or tell us about the wine at all just poured it and went back to talking about other stuff. He was nice however I would have liked more info on the wine. The location is great inside an old school house. We got a red wine that was full of black pepper flavors and smoke. The prices are great as well.

This place was such a pleasant surprise. You walk up to a small schoolhouse building and are greeted warmly upon arrival. Friendly staff generously offers you five tastings for $ 3 of splendid wines. The dark chocolate

This is one of my favorite tasting rooms to visit in the Traverse area. The people are always very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. They never really seem to get overwhelmed with the number of patrons. The wine is good and reasonably priced. The schoolhouse theme is neat. Definitely worth a stop every time.

Quaint and lovely wine tasting room. The staff was attentive and knowledgable and the wine was pretty good. The detention and semi dry reisling was great.

Wonderful use of a historic building. I loved the cute, gimicky names for some of the wines since it is in a old schoolhouse — made them stand out a little. The late harvest riesling, detention, and hot rod cherry were the best in my opinion but I didn’t try anything I didn’t like!

This is one of my favorites on the peninsula. Since it’s an old school house they play into the theme with cute wine names like Homework & Detention, and it tastes great. It is more of a tasting room and not somewhere to chill and spend time.

Our favorite winery on the peninsula. Cute open schoolhouse, many of the items inside are from the original space. We had an excellent conversation on a lazy Sunday with the bartender, who gave us some helpful local insight on the area… and the wine! We enjoyed it all, but ended up buying a bottle of the Pinot Blanc. Definitely stop here on your tour.

The wine selection there is fantastic. Detention, Homework, Late Harvest Riesling… it is all phenomenal. And if you want a real treat, try out the Hot Rod Cherry! Set away in a little school house that was converted over into a wine tasting room, its just a unique experience from the beginning to end. I cannot say enough about this place. A lot of people might give it crap, but it is a very special place to me. I asked my wife to marry me in their vineyards… so it will away hold a special place in my heart. :)

On Vacation in Michigan, we were just out for a drive up the peninsula when we spotted this place. We were drawn in because it’s in one of the many one room school houses that still exist in Michigan and we wanted to see inside. The staff was extremely nice — not only about the wine tasting but also helping us plan our vacation in the area. The wine was amazing. We bought some Old School White and Detention(which was stored in the corner — appropriate :-). We honestly wish we had bought more — hope they ship to Georgia.

REVIEWINGTHEWINETASTINGONLY: To my personal preference Peninsula Cellars was the top of the list of tasting, within the Traverse City wine region. The service was attentive and although the tasting portion of the day was rapidly coming to an end, we were poured a 2007 Manigold Gewürztraminer, which just so happened to be on special. Buy one get one free is quite a deal in this area and with whites from other wineries being shallow to the nose and the palate, the Gewürztraminer was a true treat. The Old School Red and Detention(both $ 14.99/bottle) were close to the best reds of the day at a great price, so I bagged a few of those bottles. Sweet berry, but far from immature and young, both wines versitile enough to pair with most any dish-just no fresh water fish in my opinion and is splendid with pizza-Seriously! We were served a Kroupa Orchards Apple wine at the very end and I think it summed up the wonderful options at Peninsula Cellars: Inventive, bold, daring and well balanced!
