This place was a nightmare on July 4. Music was okay. Used to be Glas Kat.

So Glas Kat changed its name to Tabu !!! I finally figured the puzzle. The doors are more fancy, but that’s IT! It’s practically the same! Dark wooden floors and the bare minimum as far as decorations go. The crowd got more ghetto. But it’s all good if you like the bump and grind scene. LOLLL

I came here TWICE. The first time was awful, the line was 3 blocks long. It was an 18+ event from Bayhype. Omg can you say ghetto? If it wasn;‘t for this one guy who thought us girls were cute, we wouldn’t have gotten in! He moved us to the front of the line, how nice of him! The one security was a BITCH! He acted like he owned the damn place! And he kept telling hella people to go to the back of the line and checking people’s drink, I mean it is his job, but he was doing a little TOO much. Even the owner came out and said just let the girl in, since he claimed that she had cut the line. Crazy! This event was SUPER ghetto, racket, grimey, and crowded. There was another entrance for like older people I believe, it was the fobs i think! They spoke Canto or Thai i don’t know, but I know what the other people are talking about! I only wanted to go since I had a presale. This is NOT the place to be! Gross, there was no way that I could of dance when I can’t even MOVE! And the way people were dancing grossed the shit outta me! Like girls literally on the floor dry humping the men! Hella old men too! The bar sucks ass since it’s limited in a small space! DONOT recommend coming here! Super nastyyyy!

Promoter/Date: Beyond Entertainment, 11⁄14 Saturday Crowd: Full of Asians, wait I meant FOB Asians.(I have nothing against fobs, just letting you know, if you like them, go here!) Canto and Mando mostly. I hear there’s a chance of gang affiliation here too(the fob gangs, but they’re mostly harmless… though I was told the security is so great because lots of fights break out here). Lots of drunk situations, you know, the ones where you can’t help but stare at until they’re being escorted out. Price: $ 20 a person, plus a greaaatttt pat down for girls and guys Parking: You can find it if you look hard enough. if you park under the bridge, I think you risk getting a ticket on the«safe» side if you’re at the first few spots, if you park on the«scary» side, there’s hobos and it smells like pee there. Just go down the streets in all directions of the club and you’ll find a spot soon enough. Music: Not so great, not my taste. Random remixes. Dance Floor: I HAD A GREATTIMEPLAYINGSARDINES! No, really, I did! It was so fun being pushed around knowing you’d bump into someone instead of falling to the ground; it was so fun watching people run around and dance really bad… it’s hard to dance on the dance floor, point blank. Plus, the cage was taken down(it was fun when I went on that 18+ night a few years ago haha) and you get some wannabe strippers dancing on the pole near the DJ. Bathrooms: Apparently the guys bathroom had an attendant who had more things you would find in your OWN bathroom! Pee all over the floor I hear, too. The girls’ bathroom isn’t too bad, a couch in the mini room before it too. Copious amounts of soap, toilet seat covers, but TP ran out in one stall before the night was over. Security: Fantastic, I loved them. Not too pushy either, kind of friendly. SMOKING: HAHAHA smoking ROOM, which has a capacity limit and enough air flow for them to get the permit for that room. It’s quite nasty, don’t go in there unless you really need to smoke a drunken cig. I call it a coffin for smokers. The fobs seem okay with it, but us american kids? Not so much. My boyfriend said if he stood there for an hour, he would probably quit. Bar: not too crowded, nobody gave attitude but need $ 20 minimum for credit charge. Everyone only took shots so I don’t know about the mix drinks, but shots were good I guess. If I missed my fob side, I wouldn’t mind going back haha

I just read the reviews for this place and started agreeing with many of the comments. 98% Asian in this place. $ 20 cover. I never been to a club where it was so well lit. It’s a miracle how a little bit of lighting works. I prefer to keep it movie theatre status, as dark as possible. Nevertheless, I was with great company. We basically did our own thing and made the best of it. Besides that, this place kinda blew. There was no dry spot on the bathroom floor. I couldn’t decifer if it was toilet water or piss that I was standing in. Probably not coming back whenever I’m up in the bay area. Sorry, just wasn’t feeling anything here.

What can I say about Tabu? I’m a fan and not for the people that come to the parties. I’m a fan cause it is a cool little spot in the city to kick it with friends. The music’s good and I can usually find a place to dance. There’s a smoking room indoors for smokers. Overall it’s a decent venue, a little small but still fun cause of my friends. If you want to meet a guy or girl this is NOT the club for you for obvious non English speaking people reasons but if you go with friends like I do… you will have fun :)

Can’t say I’d recommend this place. It’s pretty asian here. I mean, if you like a more asian crowd at a club, this is major asian. When you hear more Mandarin than you do English, that’s the level of asian we’re talking about. Let’s not talk about how badly people dance. The venue itself is quite nice. VIP entrance to the bar upstairs with a small dance floor overlooking the larger dance floor below. There’s a cage, which is a little bit 90’s clubbish, and stripper poles set up just above the main dance floor. There are multiple staircases up and down, and a total of 4 bars. Nice. For the smokers, there is a smoke room near the front entrance. I gave it 2 stars for my first review. 3 is way too much for this place, and 1 is reserved for places that totally blow. This venue has potential. I’ll come back if I see a better review one day. For now, this spot would be for you if you’re into the heavily asian crowd. I mean heavy.

1÷18÷09. I last went here when it was Glaskat and this is the first time I went here since they remodeled. Didn’t like it then, and I don’t like it now. First thing, I unknowingly went to a 18+ party(my friends didn’t know neither) and the cover for me was $ 20. Now, most places it is cheaper if you are 21 since you’ll be buying drinks. Nope, not here. After waiting in line until about 11p(the doors were supposed to open at 10p) the first thing I went to was the bathroom. Both toilets in the men’s restroom were DESTROYED and covered with garbage bags. Now, good thing I only needed to take a piss, but how come this wasn’t fixed before they opened the club? There weren’t even signs that say«out of order» or anything like that. I went to buy some drinks at the bar then proceeded to go to the dance floor. The bouncer stops me. Apparently, because it is a 18+ night drinkers must stay around an enclosed area around the bar until they finish their drink. WTF? I never seen anything like this! After finishing a bunch of drinks my friends and I ordered, we went to the dance floor. I know a lot of minors sneak into 18+ clubs with fake IDs(just as a lot of college students sneak into 21+ clubs with fake IDs), but what I saw was ridiculous. There are a lot of girls who look like they’re like 11 or 12 years old year… I could’ve sworn I saw some LEDs light up from a lot of shoes. I can now see why alcohol is restricted to that tiny area near the bar; this place can get into some REAL trouble if they get caught serving drinks to 12 year olds. Smart for the promoters to plan ahead! Bottom line is, this is the same thing as Glaskat; new look, same aweful taste! One extra star because the bartender made really strong Adioses and Long Island drinks. Recommended for ages 10 – 17 and maybe pedophiles!

i’m torn between giving tabu 2 or 3 stars, but i’m feeling nice today and i think i’m just biased against clubs in general. so 3 it is. i wrote a review for glaskat a while back, in a nutshell i wanted to kill myself while i was there. my friend decided to have her birthday bash here and i agreed before checking out the spot, and upon finding out it was formerly glaskat i cried a little [just kidding. angie never cries]. it was too late to back out, so i sucked it up and went. maybe it’s because there are no more young ass boppers using fake ID’s because they’re really like 16 or 17 years old, but the place looked much better this time around. we got the VIP whatever, so we had a little section where we could sit with bottle service. the waiters did a decent job, not excellent but whatever. still though, they must have kept the same whack ass DJ who played the same shit 2837629762726 times in one night. my adiós cost $ 10 and wasn’t that great =/ anywhos, previously mentioned BARFday girl ended up yacking her brains outside, but the bouncers were cool about leting me in and out to get her napkins and find the rest of my crowd, hence the 3 stars. i dunno if i’d make a point to come back though, but at least i resisted the urge to stab myself in the neck while i was here.

***THISISALSOKNOWNASGLASKAT*** This is one of my top SF club bc of the size. I do not like one level clubs bc there’s never enough room to have fun. Tabu is two levels. With THREE bars! I adore that. This place also has long bench upstairs, and a few seating areas on the bottom level for those girls in pain b. c their shoes are killing them, but don’t have a VIP table. GOTTALOVETHAT! When I come here, I usually go when there’s an asian promotion party throwing it, but almost always theres a little bit of a mixed crowd, but still mostly asian. I like the music they play upstairs and downstairs. Whenever something I don’t particularly like comes on I just go to the other level to dance. Music is what keeps the party moving… literally… so that needs to be good. This place has a INSIDE smoking area and some people hate that bc it lacks ventilation, but I like that I won’t be cold. & Yes, there is coat check here for a few bucks. One caution, which is not the club’s fault, but I’ve known several people who have gotten their cars broken into the area… SO remember the clubbing rules for getting out of your cars… put all your belongings in the trust BEFORE you get to the club, take all things you don’t want stolen with you, park in lit areas, and of course lock your doors. Trust me when I say, once you’ve had something stolen the cops will make you wait for them to get a report down and they won’t do anything about finding it bc they know the chances are low, so they won’t even try. TRUSTMEONTHAT!!!

I love this place! for some reason I always get butt ass drunk everytime i come here… One time i got so drunk that i fell down and hit my head on the curb and my brains splattered out~!!! j/k but I did get a big lump on my head the next day… «my friends are horrible!» while puking and having my mom hold up my head

I don’t quite remember, but I thought it looked a lot nicer when it was Glaskat back in the days. Now this place looks old and weary with paint coming off everywhere. Plastic mini cups for drinks… come on, can you be any more stingy? One extra star for hosting Supreme Soul, thanks for being well ventilated near the front of the stage and not being too crowded to the point where I was actually able to be all up in the front of the stage to go gaga over the cool dance moves that Supreme Soul displayed on MTV and pinch myself to remind myself that I was really there. P. S. The ladies room was gross, plugged and door locks were busted!

I had no idea when I came, that this was the old Glas Kat. Hated Glas Kat, hate Tabu. Come ooon… if you’re going to change the name of the club at least change some of the décor, or at least the damn«Kat» doors. Maybe it’s because my friends and I haven’t been in the club scene for a while, but we were definitely not feeling it: Girl’s were suited up… in slut gear, trying to dance and kiss each other for attention, the place was filled with D-bags left and right, «I’m a UC Berkeley senior… Have you guys heard of UC Berkeley?» NO! Never… idiot. In addition we had mom and dad tearin’ up the dance floor, «Who let the old guy with shorts and flip flops in?» Never coming back.

7.19.08: I could have fun anywhere and seriously I can. The place was alright. People say its ghetto, but I like the upstairs and downstairs thing they have going on but it was a bit confusing though. Can’t really find the restrooms and just to enter the downstairs room is a bit of a maze. Well not really but in a sense yea it was. I felt as if everyone either just turned 21 or had fake IDs. There was two half stripper pole things on the stage. I think anyone and I mean anyone actually just went up there and did their two-stepping. It was slutty horrible and very very fugly! The night ended with a lot of pushing and shoving. Luckily I knew people and my girls and I did our own thing up on the stage. Away from the crowd and away from the wannabes. Everyone was either a gangster or a slut that night. Well of course not including me and my girls. duh! There was a stabbing or something crazy that happened. Ambulance came and cops everywhere. While my girls and I walked to the car some crazy 16 year old pulled down her tube top twice to flash her people. My girl pointed at her and said«Hey that’s the girl who looked like she was fucking her man on the dance floor!» We all looked, we nodded and took off in our car. Never again tabu, never again!

I went here back in the spring when my friend and I met up to go bar/club hopping one night and she wanted to swing by here because her friend was celebrating his bday. The last time I went here, it was still the Glas Kat. That was in 2003. No scratch that, I actually remember going here with another friend and her friends back in 2005. I think the only time I really enjoyed myself here was when I was newly 21 and clubbing(legally) was so so fun and exciting. The venue itself is craptastic even if it does have an upstairs area overlooking the main dance floor. The crowd(mainly Asian) has changed a bit from the last time I was here. It had a lot of bridge and tunnel(of the bay area) folk. I even recognized some guys that went to my high school(in Vallejo). The music was so-so but I still made the most out of it, because that’s how I do. I’ll bust a move anytime, anywhere… you only live once!

Came here for someone’s birthday a while back… Not sure whether it is always like this, but it was a strictly Asian crowd. The gogo dancers, the people, the venue… it all made me want to blow chunks. Places like this deeply trouble me and give me nightmares for months. Your quintessential Asian club. If you want to know why I left the«urban asian» scene years ago, look no further than the Tabu Lounge.

Tabu Lounge and Suede are now the new Asian destination on Saturday night. Make no mistake, lines will be long, fights will happn frequently, and bathroom will go to hell. I wanted to look past all these flaws that generally clouded the Asian promotions, but I couldn’t stand how Tabu refused to turn on A.C. at all. Everyone was sweating everywhere,(we all know what happens when the club is too heated, ppl get angry and pushy) then some b! tch stepped on my girl, making her bleed everywhere. If it’s not for my girl I would never be here, unfortunately I will be probably going back again soon. Horrible.

Uh-oh. Asian Invasion. not the good kind either. Super ghetto – and what one Unilocaler below described as «hoochie». And what’s with the 20 dollar cover? I can buy like, 8 happy meals from McDonalds with that kinda money. Crowd not appealing, horrible music, couldn’t have fun. And I always have fun… but this place was a little disturbing. But the only reason why I came here was because my friend begged me to come with her to check it out. Hm. should’ve trusted my instinct. I’m sticking with house/dance/electro clubs. What kinda name is Tabu Lounge anyway? More like Pupu Lounge.

Formerly Glas Kat, I think. I knew because we were looking for Glas Kat and found this place instead. And they kept the cat logos. $ 20 cover. WTF? That’s a bit too expensive for an okay club like this one. Too hot and crowded. Not enough ventilation. There is a cage and a pole for whoever’s interested to strut their stuff(thanks Paulina for reminding me :)). Bar was really messy and slow. There’s a puddle on the counter and the bartenders were taking their sweet time. Also, they don’t even use real glasses, all the drinks were served on cheap plastic glasses. I mean, come on man, we’re supposed to use as much sustainable products as possible, aren’t we?(my prof is a tree hugger and it’s rubbing off on me). … I may not remember writing this review in the morning… so please excuse the bad writing… At least I was sober enough to check for typos! No, really, I actually realized that I was making a whole bunch of typos while typing this review, and I accidentally hit the caps lock at least once. If I didn’t edit myself the review would probably lopk lkike THioS.

For Halloween this year, we had been scouring around for the best parties, and ended up choosing this place known as Tabu Lounge. My favorite Unilocaler and I had spent the greater part of the last few weeks picking out our costumes, and we were more than anxious to show off all the time and effort we put into them. However, not everything went according to plan. If I only knew ahead of time that Tabu was actually a rebadging of one of the worst clubs I’ve ever patronized — Glas Kat aka Ass Krap — I would have looked elsewhere. To quote a popular Unilocaler, «I hate this place. It’s making me angry typing this.» I don’t even want to get into the details, but maybe this will tell the story… Management — The line was out the door, and around the block, but not because there was an exorbitant amount of patrons. The promoters PURPOSELY held back the queue to ensure that no one could get in before the guest list cut off time. SHAY-DAY. Dance floor — I’m sure many of you have experienced the displeasure of having to wait several eons and a half to get into a club, anticipating to be blown away, only to be left thinking, «Is this it???» It only took me a minute or two to realize that it was déjà vu, and I was lured back to the same old Ass Krap that I vowed never to be caught in again. The dance floors are TINY, and I don’t even want to offend the fine sardines of the world by telling you how packed it was, even with the miniscule amount of patrons in attendance. Crowd — Chinese, Chinese, and more Chinese. It was a mix of HK’ers and your stereotypical SuburbanizAsians thinking they are hard. All the knockoff Kimora Lees provide maybe a good five minutes worth of eye candy… until they start opening their mouths. As for the guys, these bone skinny little runts strut around like they are hot *ish,* but in reality would probably be given a great challenge in a showdown with a wet newspaper. There was this one fool who gave a hard bump to my favorite Unilocaler, and out of reflex, I just gave him a quick shove with one hand. Had the floor not been more crowded than a cargo container full of Mainlanders, he would have gone flying across the room. Come to think of it, I could be mistaken about the ethnicities though. Perhaps there were more dark skinned partyers in the house. It’s just that everyone was turning pale from not being able to breathe! Bar — One bar is CASHONLY. The other is $ 20 minimum for credit cards. Yeah, as if there was any cash remaining in our pockets after getting butt raped at the admissions line. Reee-diculous. DJ — This is the only saving grace. The hip hop section plays your same, typical Top 40 mainstream rap as club #2343 and #345367 down the street, but the 80’s area, complete with a middle aged, chubby Asian DJ sportin’ a tank top, steals the show. From Rick Astley to Taylor Dayne to New Edition and INXS, all that your heart desires is covered. Security — Other than outside the front door, I witnessed a grand total of ZERO bouncers all night. I know it’s a mostly Chinese club, and chances of fights and girls getting harassed are quite low, but it’s always nice to have some sense of safety. Shoot, I could have wrecked house in there, and no one would have known a thing. Cover Charge — $ 25. That about says it all. Oh well, I guess since so few people had the opportunity to witness our splendid outfits, we can always save them for next year…
