A few weeks ago, I went down 4th Street, and looked for Glas Kat, and couldn’t find it. Now I know why. I’d been to a few of their salsa nights several years ago. Was an intermediate-advanced crowd with an attitude. I read that they had bachata on the upper level. Both Cocomo and Roccapulco are better for salseros. Glas Kat won’t be missed.

Venue: Dark, basic, and simple. Age range: 20’s. SIGHHHH my first 18+ club. How could I NOT Unilocal this ! I give it 5 stars back then and about 2 stars now. I LOVED this joint! They had this box that my friend and I would try to dance on top of. It was really hot back then. I even wore my vans. I have no idea how they let me in. I went back here a year ago. and it was dead in the beginning. And as we left, some people started trickling in. It was totally not an asian invasion but more like a diversity party. hahahahah ANYWAYS — my friends got scared and so we bounced to BOSS –__–

I was recently here for a party on a Saturday night. I asked the bartender(an old white guy, think his name was Steve) for 2 shots. He took a few minutes. While we were waiting the person next to us ordered 2 shots from a different bartender. Then, our guy came back and said, «Sorry, we’re out of that.» No big deal, right? I ordered 2 drinks instead. He told me it was $ 14, which I handed him. He asked, «What? You don’t have a dollar for me?‘ I said, «No, I ordered my shot way before the guy next to me. Nothing personal, but it should have been mine.» THEBARTENDER said, «Fine!» and YANKEDMYDRINKOUTOFMYHAND, SPILLINGITALLOVERME. THEBARTENDER then THREWMYMONEYATME, ACROSSTHEBARANDONTOTHEFLOORINFRONTOFMYFRIENDS. Management did nothing, except order me a drink to replace it. They said he was at the front bar as a favor and that they had had problems with him before, yet there he stayed. I will not return to this establishment.

Good to see the hemorrhaging has finally come to an end and watch this SOB of a place go belly up. There was a time during my freshman year in college when Glas Kat was packed, the music was good, drink prices were reasonable, and the people were cool. I hooked up with my first«club/bar girl» who won my heart as well as completely destroyed it 6 months later. Ahh. it was a good learning experience that made me feel human… sorry getting side tracked. I didnt have a Unilocal account back then.. I do however have one now so here it goes. I met some friends here last year for a birthday party which sucked major a$$. Nothing was organized, people in our party had a hard time getting in. It wasn’t worth my time reviewing. I received an email invite stating that this Saturday April 2nd would be their last day and that they had 9 tables available. Really? That’s kind of pathetic if its your last day and you still have anything available. Needless to say I will not be joining in on your last hur rah! BUT Its all good Glas Kat. Just like its states in your email«after 12 years…» well 12 years is the average life expectancy for«kats» and you had a good run.

THISREVIEWRELATESTOTHETUESDAYNIGHTSALSALESSONS Having been to a few different clubs now for salsa lessons, I have to say that Tuesday nights here are probably the best. The instructors are entertaining, engaged, and cover musicality as well as footwork. I’ve been several times now and will continue to go. My only complaint is that the dance floor is a bit small, and that the intermediate class tends to get a little complicated because there is not enough room to execute the moves.

#$%& Watahell. That was my reaction when on my fourth visit I realized that this makes it twice that the floor was going to remain this empty well into closing. I’ve never been to a well located SF Night Club that had blaring music and(aside from the wallflowers and the sausage fests staring towards the exit hoping a group of semi-hot chicks to pounce on would walk in) a completely empty dance floor ON A SATURDAYNIGHT. The second visit, and it was empty on a Friday Night. The first visit was decent but take into consideration it was actually crowded, I had ample friends and it was one of those nights you ran into everyone you know, those are major factors for a venues success also, I probably thoroughly enjoyed the first visit because I was loaded on ecstacy and I was 17. Just kidding. But, no, seriously, don’t expect to go here for a good time unless you are 15 years old with an 18 year olds I. D but even then it sucks because you’d need alcohol to fully paint this place as a fun one. If you’re a swinger, the upstairs and the love seats are so comfortable to get lost in and on, not that I know from experience, I’m just saying it’s secluded and they“re fully furnished with plush red sofas, it almost screams THISISTHEUPSTAIRSHOTEL. That is probably the only advantage(sike?) since the smoking room is long gone, oh and there’s a cage and a pole.

I came here for a friend’s birthday on a Saturday night — the same night the club was hosting a Lunar New Year-themed event. I’d signed up on the guest list and was in the line by 10.30. I thought the club was pretty packed, judging by how slowly the line was moving. By the time we got to the front, it was past 11 and the guest list was closed. So we each had to pony up $ 20. OK. Then we get inside the club. WTF. First of all, $ 20? For a cover? For a club of that calibre? Are you freaking kidding me? I was sorely tempted not to pay it but it was past 11, I was meeting friends there and didn’t want to bail. And then the second lovely surprise. The club is empty. The sign at the entrance said, «Occupancy: 500», but I seriously doubt that there were more than 100 people. Upstairs and downstairs combined. The music was mediocre at best(weird techno remixes of songs that are catchy, but not really dance-worthy) and NOONE was dancing. And, best of all, there is a $ 20 minimum to use your credit card at the bar(although, to be fair, the bartenders let it go if you hit $ 15). The other slight plus in all this was that the LNY-themed stuff was mildly(I stress, mildly) entertaining. But none of us could get over the fact that the club was deliberately scamming us out of $ 20 and wasn’t even worth the time and wait. I’m usually one to stick around a club until last call but I was more than happy to leave well before then.

This review is for the SALSA options ONLY — on Tuesday nights. Friendliness: 2⁄5(crowdedness leads to dancer rage) Skill level: 4⁄5 Ah, Glas Kat. The place that almost caused me to quit salsa 4 – 5 months into it. Sure, I was such a newbie then(humble and upfront about it, but new regardless), but the people who I asked to dance were universally rude to me and my friends. After a year of social dancing under my belt, my experience became much better. The skill level is high but more social than troupe-y in the way the connection feels and the people handle, so that is a big plus for them. The one big negative once you get past the learning curve is the crowdedness of the place, which I feel fuels all the other negative vibes of the place. You need to control your slot well and make sure others don’t careen into you, and you need to exercise restraint when dancing so you don’t hit others. Essentially it’s hella crowded but since most everyone there is good about their slot(or maneuvering in and out of unused slot space) it becomes more tolerable. Oh yeah, re: lessons — Ricardo and Tiane(of Rica Salsa fame) are awesome teachers, and you can really see their passion for the dance. :-)

Glas Kat, what can i say?! Came here in September 2009 for my sister birthday; yes it’s taken me over a year to finish my review, says a lot. @10:00PM. $ 20.00 cover, I put us on the g list; that was pointless. First dance floor: overly crowded hip-hop room Second dance floor(large downstairs):huge dance floor; would be nice if they had more seating, or booths in this room. Third dance floor: where we spend most of our time, has a little indoor smoking room, small bar, the night we went they were playing mixture of music with some Spanish rock; only reason i stayed in this room Drinks:over priced Made the best of it! had great company.

Maybe I went on the wrong night, but it was not fun ATALL. Frat parties were better. That’s right. FRATPARTIES. While the venue itself is pretty nice, it’s way too small/crowded. The pictures make it look a LOT better than it really is. I went with my girlfriends and we had to keep on navigating around for a place to really enjoy ourselves and dance. This brings me to my second point– way too many creepers. These guys just don’t know that«no means no», and the same people just kept coming back to us after we keep on rejecting them. The music didn’t help much either. In the beginning, the DJ played decent songs, but towards the middle, they got extremely crappy, until the end when everyone was starting to leave anyway(WTF?!). Again, these observations/biases are really dependent on the night and on the group hosting the event.(I went for a BayHype event) I might come back another night and give this another chance, but as of now… not worth my money.

The first time I’ve been to Glas Kat was during Salsa Night. They have dining upstairs serving Asian fusion food. We ordered appetizers of spicy sausages, and i remembered enjoying it. You can view downstairs from the dining area. Both floors have full bars, drinks were okay. The main floor offers a big spaced dance floor, complete with a stage. A lot of people are a fan of Salsa night and this club was crowded. The night we came, there were some sort of contest/performance. It was so much fun. They offer different themed nights throughout the week. I like the variety and you’ll definitely find a night you will like.

This place is getting 3 stars because the people I came with made it so much fun. The pictures look much better than the actually place. CONS: I wish there was much more seating. The security was doing a little to much, like being rude. I do understand they have a job to do but dang the rudeness needed to stop as well as taking ids and not giving them back. PROS: BIG dance floor!!! I did enjoy the pole to an extent because it was getting SUPER wild and then I got scared. Another plus was the bathroom, which was not too messed up compared to other SF spots. The smoker room was kool for my smoker friends. Oh and they serve food, which tasted ok.

The sound system here was terrible! It was like nails on a chalkboard. If the place wasn’t filled with underage kiddies, then maybe this place would be okay. The venue has two floors, but it’s pretty tiny. I went up to the second floor and ¾ of it was blocked off for a private party. Although, I’m not sure there was really a private party going on. The security guy seemed pretty anal and could’ve been messing with us. Even if there was a private party, I won’t hold it against the venue that their security guy was far from pleasant. Anyways, the bottom floor is where all the action is at. For 18+ events, they block off this tiny area near the bar for the 21+ to drink. I don’t think beverages of the alcoholic kind are allowed passed these ropes, bummer! What fun is a club if you can’t freely mingle with others and introduce your cocktail to the dance floor? This venue is kind of out of the way, which can be a good thing, but also has some negatives. It can be good because parking is sometimes in your favor. I was last here on Thursday and was able to find parking one block from the venue. The downside of being somewhat set apart from other places is that you can’t really hop to another place so easily when you get bored. Yes, I said«when,» because you will get bored here. Sorry, Glas Kitty, but I’ll return only if I have to.

Went here on Saturday, 2⁄6. The promoters for this event should be fired because it was SOOO dead!!! And it wasn’t a diverse crowd either. I think I went on an off night. It was totally dead. It was pretty nice inside, except there was this metallic banner thingy by the dj booth that reminds me of a high school dance? The DJ played some good stuff as well. Overall I’d give this place 2 stars based on the fact that it was dead and isn’t as pretty as other clubs in the area(went to CIRCA afterwards, BEAUTIFUL inside, but too many preppy people). However, the reason I am giving 4 stars is for one reason, and one reason only. The AWESOME bartender. Asian dude, wearing a «The City» hat, with tattoo sleeves on each arm. He was nice, and hooked me and my friend up with shots of «One Night Stands.» Delicious. And THEN, he shared his starbursts with me and my friends too! That is by far the nicest bartender I have ever come across in the 9 years I’ve been going to clubs. And the people that I was with said the same exact thing about him. Trust me, we go to clubs in SFALL the time. I don’t look for freebies, and I know owners don’t like to give away free stuff. They’re there to make money, right? But I hope they see this bartender as an asset to their club. He was really cool. Most bartenders that work at clubs think they are rockstars and I HATE that. A bartender that goes out of his way to treat his customers great makes me wanna spend my money. So owner of the Glaskat, I hope I don’t get this bartender in trouble by saying he hooked it up. And no, I personally don’t know this bartender hoping to get him a raise. I just hope you know you have a good employee that knows how to impress customers in an otherwise non-happening club on this particular night. I will definitely go back to the Glaskat based on this bartender and his awesome service.

This is a review for SATURDAYSONLY. I absolutely did not expect to like this place as much as I did. And I will continue to go back on Saturdays. But without question, you come here to dance. Period. Phenomenal music both upstairs and down, they take requests to heart, and you will never EVER have to worry about hearing Miley’s «Party in the USA»… EVER. A few things to keep in mind tho: (1) the drinks are hit or miss, I’ve had strong and weak, so get a shot if you must drink(but honestly, people weren’t there to get trashed, see above re: dancing). (2) there is a bomb taco truck around the corner. (3) No AmEx.

We went here for my friend’s birthday dinner. I’ve been here for the nightlife, but this was the first time I’ve been there for the food(located on the 2nd floor). We were the only table in the whole place, so the table was set nicely in the middle. The service was okay. However, the food was very poor. The prices were average… The mango chicken was $ 12 and the portion was small. It included some mango chicken and a small portion of rice. This would’ve been okay if the food was tasty… however the mango was cut in huge pieces, not small chunks. The chicken pieces were dry. The sauce was tasted like it came from a bottle. The short ribs were $ 9, which was rather cheap. It was pretty salty though and had a strong soy sauce flavor. We also had ordered different appetizers. Nothing surprising here. Fried chicken wings, corn fritters, sliders, and fried calamari. Calamari lacked a dipping sauce. Corn fritters, were served with a sweet and sour sauce, and was probably the best out of them all. They were also out of the roti… not to mention the rib eye entrée. Overall, if you’re not a picky eater, then the food here is okay. I personally don’t think it was worth it, even though it was on the cheaper side. The food just didn’t have any kick or anything special about it, pretty bland stuff, didn’t seem very fresh… On top of that, the clubbing part of the place starts at around 10, so they try to finish you up by 930 – 10. Not that great, having a «rushed» dinner. Then everyone migrated to the private room after dinner. The music system was not smooth at all, and they had to adjust it numerous times. The party going on at the venue itself was pretty bad. By 11 pm, it still looked pretty dead… On top of that, it’s basically just the bottom, which is a dance floor. Poorly ventilated area, not very classy. Pretty dirty bathrooms. Yikess, this just wasn’t my kinda place! ;P

I don’t know what it’s like to be at an 18+ club anymore. even if it is 21+ on saturdays… doesn’t work for me. I will always remember it as 18+ glaskat thursday nights indeed. I hear remodelings. but still. it doesn’t attract me to go here again ever since my last visit there as a under 21+ kid… sorry glaskat/tabu :(. i hope you don’t miss me too much

This is the first club I ever went to, and my experience was probably largely influenced by the awkward.(Really, who the hell goes clubbing with the ex and a bunch of other friends? Smartest idea in the world.) Awkwardddd. I think the event was called Summerfest. If you were female and wore a swimsuit, you’d get in for free before 10:30. By the time I got through the line, it was past that, so I just paid $ 5 and went in. It was mostly filled with Asians. I prefer Asians, I guess, but I dislike freaking with strange dudes(why was I even in a club? once again, what the hell was I thinking?). Anyway, it was so-so. Awkward. I always thought guys just asked for your number as an ego thing, that they didn’t actually ever call, so I made the mistake of humoring one of them. So I guess I was mistaken. :| Good job, me.
