Ballast

Are you a Richard Serra fan? If you happen to be in the neighborhood, you might enjoy stopping by and admiring the art.
Are you NOT a Richard Serra fan? You can at least appreciate that the art provides a bit of shade in this otherwise un-​shady location. However… you’ll need to act early during the lunch hour to get a spot behind it.
NB Local children have taken to using it as a place to exhibit their chalk drawings.

Light in their heaviness. Huge in their thinness.
I fleetingly suspected their function as a sundial till I realized their elegance surpasses that to fill and divide the plaza in changing ways depending on their positioning versus the viewer. This is either what you hate or what you love about works by Richard Serra.
Had I been in SF too long for having instinctively visualized their being dotted with hand and footholds and having belay ropes thrown over them? Perhaps, for were I instead an Oaklandite, I’d have pictured trapezes up top with a rope or tissue and everything aflame.
