I’ve been here plenty and they’re always solid! Reasonable prices, good quality food, good portions. It doesn’t wow me, but they’re really reliable and consistent. Also you never have to deal with the downtown San Mateo traffic and hassle!

Food was edible was not the best. Service was friendly, but kinda slow comming out of the kitchen. I guess the price was okay too… they deserve the 4 stars!

Ate here on a Saturday night & there were only a few tables occupied. My family & I were seated right away; after reading the reviews I was expecting this place to be pretty good. We ordered a bunch of things on the menu: agedashi tofu, dynamite roll, unagi nigiri, poke salad, sashimi combination, dragon roll, spicy tuna roll, & the spider roll. Everything was pretty mediocre — the only dish that stood out to me was the sashimi combination, which I thought was good considering the price. Service was very friendly & attentive but I don’t think I’ll be coming back here if I ever need that sushi fix.

I’ve eaten here a few times and have enjoyed every meal. Very gracious and professional staff. The beef teriyaki is substantial and flavorful, with a delicious sauce. The tempura is crispy and delicious. Truly a neighborhood favorite!

Very mediocre. I came here on a Thursday night with my bf because we both wanted bento boxes. The restaurant was half empty(should’ve took that as a sign lol). We were sat immediately and the waiter we got was pretty friendly. With so many sushi places around the San Mateo area, I expected this restaurant to be as competitive as the ones surrounding. So I decided to try the dragon roll to see if its sushi is good. The fish had an old taste to it and I could tell it was not fresh. I also got the beef teriyaki and mixed tempura for my bento box. The beef teriyaki was quite sad to be honest. It was sliced very thinly with so little portion. It was drenched with teriyaki sauce and the meat taste was just gone. The mixed tempura came with 2 shrimps, some pieces of carrots and cucumbers. I’ve never been to a Japanese restaurant where the mixed tempura did not consisted of potatoes… That was a disappointment too. Would I come back? Maybe… I hope their bento boxes will come in a slightly bigger portion in the future.

My bf and I pass by San Mateo every day because of our work commute and traffic was horrific this day so we decided to stop by somewhere to eat. We stumbled upon this place, thanks to Unilocal,as the street its on is very busy with numerous competitors just less than 10 steps away! They close for lunch and open back up again at 5pm which was perfect since we got there on the dot! However, they didn’t open their doors right away so I even called after 5 minutes asking if they were open. Maybe a minute or 2 later they opened their doors, I’m not sure if this happens often but it is important to be punctual but hey, it happens! Friendly staff, spacious restaurant, and the sushi was delish with decent princes. I don’t recommend the chicken karaage as it was very dry, no tatse, and stale? I definitely would come here again if we wanted to take a break from traffic.

Simple but very pleasant little place on 25th Ave. Plenty of lunch options for under $ 10, which was a good value for what you get. I can’t comment on the sushi, but the chicken teriyaki bento box I had was pretty good. Very friendly service as well. One oddity is the credit card minimum for American Express is $ 70! For other cards the minimum is $ 10.

There are so many different sushi places in this area, so it’s hard to choose. The rolls were pretty good, just not filling enough for two people . We order 3 rolls: spider, dragon and the roll that is the same name as the restaurant. We shared these snd were still pretty hungry after. They did taste good, and they prices weren’t bad. The staff are very friendly and it seems to get busy, which is a good sign that the food is good.

I went with Ellen & we enjoyed it. Staff was attentive, professional and friendly. Menu has dinner options for families or a la carte. Bento boxes looked generous but we go for the rolls & nigiri. I was happy with the rice to fish ratio of the nigiri & rice in the rolls. The rice was very tasty which I found unusual since IME it’s not. The place has about 10 tables and 4 seats at the sushi bar. We sat at the bar & bantered with the Chef. I am not a big fan of spice in my baked mussels but the sauce was yummy. Tuna nigiri was one of my favorites. I’d go back for the pickled ginger too! Very good experience for a 1st visit. I’d recommend going here anytime but if you want snappy fast service during prime time you’re not going to get it. Relax, enjoy the meal.

First, my family loves sushi. We wanted to expand our sushi ‘horizon’ and based on the reviews gave Fugaro a shot for dinner. Overall, this is a solid sushi place. Friendly, clean and attentive. The grade of sushi is decent but nothing to rage about. We ordered a selection of nigiri, hand rolls and cut rolls along with some udon noodles.(um, yeah– we were hungry). Out of everything, the udon noodles rated the lowest.(We actually sent it back and they happily took off the bill.) They are very kid friendly as we brought along our 3 year old and saw at least 4 other kids while we were there. Like I said, decent sushi and good service. Probably better spot for lunch.

My sushi’s on a boat! I got the Sushi Boat A and it was more than enough food for myself. Funny how they call it a sushi boat though considering there was maybe about half a roll of California Roll –_– The sushi boat came with a bunch of stuff — tempura vegetable and shrimp, teriyaki chicken, rice, and the California Roll. For the most part, everything was pretty good. The tempura shrimp was really good and the vegetables weren’t old. The chicken was good(taste like any other) and the rice was good. I like the sticky Japanese kind. And the sushi was surprisingly good considering it was just a California Roll. Overall, it was a pretty good meal. You definitely get a lot for what you pay for. I wish there was more sushi on the boat though, but I knew when I picked it that there was only going to be a few pieces.

This is a good fusion restaurant. If you don’t expect authentic Japanese food, it’s a good place to enjoy meals. Presentation-good Staff-friendly Tempura-good Miso soup-good Karaage– disappointing Price-reasonable

Aside from the steep nigiri pricing, the food here is very tasty. What’s best is their service. The waiters and waitresses are so nice and attentive. Even the sushi chef himself came out to bring us our sushi and explain to us which one we ordered was which. Overall pleasant experience.

This place is pretty chill: not super fancy, but they serve decent sushi. The ambiance is pretty typical for a random sushi place: one of those divider walls at the door, visible sushi counter, pictures on the wall, and baseball playing in the background. My friend noticed that we were the only asian people there, but that’s random. Also, they serve their water in those huge, vintage Coca-Cola cups that are shaped funny. They’re pretty good about refiling water and the food came in a timely fashion. My friend and I had the dragon roll, summer roll, and a california roll. Of course, we also had edamame. Edamame is the bomb! Total came out to $ 32 before tip, so the price is right. The edamame was pretty standard and the rolls tasted pretty good, but they were cut pretty unevenly. It doesn’t really change the taste, but it’s strange when one bite is like a nibble and the next makes your cheeks bulge. Oh well. Overall, it’s a decent sushi place with moderate pricing and unevenly cut pieces. I might be back if I’m in the area.

I picked up my take out dinner and the only thing I wish I had done differently would have been to dine in because the service and atmosphere were so inviting. I ordered the Furagu roll and the 49ers roll. Both were delicious and very filling. I also had the Calamari Katsu. I adore calamari but I think this might be one of my least favorite preparations. There were some questionable chewy parts and the sauce just didn’t work. I wouldn’t go out of my way to dine here, but it’s a great spot to grab sushi if you’re in the area.

For 2 people at lunch we got a teriyaki chicken bento, a lion king roll, a summer roll and a poki salad. This was definitely a lot of food and came out to about $ 45 but I suppose that is decently priced. The 2 wait staff were a pretty good combo for the 4 tables seated. I hope they have more staff during peak meal times though since we went after 1pm. The tea was filled constantly and service was friendly. The rolls were very good but the bento box and salad I would say are just average. I’d highly recommend the lion king for a new experience since it’s an entire sushi roll baked making it warm yet still good. Summer roll is just a bunch of fish I like and avocado so can’t really go wrong there!

Bring friends or kids! It’s a fun place to have a casual round of sushi without the please and thank you’s. Definitely enjoyed all four rolls we ordered that night. We also ordered mochi was was DELICIOUS. I’m all about that green tea ice cream. The location is not exactly a «happening» scene like downtown San Mateo, but at least parking is not a 1 hour struggle. i have to give a shout out to the kind staff– they were cool about us staying a little over closing time(we were having such a good time, didn’t even notice).

3.5 stars. My boyfriend and I came here around 7 pm on a Thursday night, and there were about two other tables. It was cold so I was craving sukiyaki and Fugaru definitely fulfilled that craving. The beef was tender and the soup well seasoned. They also included a good amount of white cabbage and glass noodles. However, at the other end of the spectrum were their rice plates. They don’t give you much for the price, and the chicken teriyaki was dry and flavor was an afterthought drizzled in bulk on top. The sashimi while fresh was really small. Overall a very split experience. I would suggest sticking to dishes other than the plates.

Slow service, okay-prices, but high quality food. It’s off the beaten path in San Mateo, so parking is easy. Slow service: We waited 30 – 40 minutes after ordering before our food arrived. I guess it was near the end of the dinner rush, but usually food doesn’t take that long. We didn’t even order anything particularly different or complicated. I’m quite a patient person, but when you’ve finished every last bit of your appetizer salad and miso soup, and it’s bordering 8:30pm(ordered at 7:45 — 7:50), and you have been waiting long enough to think, «oh hmm I wonder what’s taking so long,» slow service might be a problem. I’m not sure if this is typical, but just passing on our experience. High quality food: Fortunately the food was quite good. I ordered the dinner bento box #4($ 18.95). The California roll was velvety smooth, the combination of fresh avocado and good imitation crab. You get a good amount of sashimi plus variety as well. In my box there were two pieces of dark tuna, two pieces of salmon, and one piece of white tuna). The cutlet is crispy and the katsu sauce is sweet and tangy. Even the beef teriyaki, usually a stir-fried mess, was firm and well-flavoured. At $ 18.95, you often get worse quality food(hello Japanese food in the Bay Area), so the fact that the food here was good is a plus. Overall, I expect the food to keep people coming back here. If they were a bit cheaper, or their service were faster, I would probably easily have bumped them up to 4 stars. But, as it stands, no dice. Fortunately they have a good product to start with. Looking forward to seeing how this place develops!

LOVELOVELOVELOVETHISPLACE! Oh, did I mention that I love this place? Because I love this place. The sushi rolls are presented and priced well. Everything tastes fresh. Their baked rolls are superior compared to the abundant amount of sushi restaurants in San Mateo. Lets review my typical menu Bento boxes are hard to screw up, for lunch they range from 8 – 11 dollars for 3 items that comes with rice, salad, and miso soup. Unbeatable. For dinner they range from 12 – 15 dollars. Affordable/expected. Appetizers; I’ve only tried their spicy mayo baked mussels. This place does it JUSTRIGHT. Just how I like it. Similar to my favorite RENO joint; Sushi pier. 6 pieces for 6.95. Rolls; BAKEDANYTHING, TRUSTME. Their cream cheese rolls are delicious as well. So what is the best roll for me? Their golden roll! Baked roll with avocado, imitation crab, and cream cheese topped with house sauce and a creamy spicy sauce. Absolutely heavenly. I never had their chirashi or raw fish in general, but my boyfriend swears by their spicy tuna hand roll, and my friends fell in love with first taste or their chirashi. Tempura udon; SOGOOD and only 10 dollars. The tempura and noodles are separated, some places do not separate them, EW. And the tempura sauce is perfect, not too salty. Coke is fountain coke(MUCHBETTERTHANCAN). Service is phenomenal, they come up to us about every 10 – 15 minutes to check if we need refills and to check if everything is okay. Great place to dine in or take out for the right price. A staple in my meals.
